2006 Saab 9-7x problems
The Saab 9-7X is a mid-size luxury SUV that was built by General Motors for the American market and sold under the Saab marque. The 9-7X was first revealed at the 2004 New York International Auto Show, and was available starting in the model year of 2005, as a replacement for the Oldsmobile Bravada.
Information and vehicle details
The Saab 9-7X was introduced in 2004 for the 2005 model year and was made by General Motors, and the 9-7X was also built on the GMT360 platform, which is the same platform that the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy, Isuzu Ascender, Oldsmobile Bravada, and Buick Rainier were all built on. The 9-7X was Saab's first-ever SUV.
The Saab 9-7X was originally available in two trim levels for 2005: the Linear and the Arc. The Saab 9-7X did not offer a turbocharged engine, quite unusual for a Saab vehicle. All Saab 9-7X vehicles come with all wheel drive (2005 was the first year all wheel drive was offered by Saab), eighteen inch sport wheels, and sport tuned suspension as standard equipment. The 9-7X was built at GM's Moraine, Ohio assembly plant. The Saab 9-7X is classified as a midsize luxury SUV.
When the 2005 Saab 9-7X had been introduced, it had served as the replacement for the Oldsmobile Bravada (which was discontinued as a direct result of the Oldsmobile brand being discontinued in 2004), along with the Buick Rainier. Most of the exterior styling on the Saab 9-7X and on the Buick Rainier was a direct transfer from the discontinued Bravada, except for a front fascia designed to resemble other Saab vehicles.
From 2005 to 2009, the Saab 9-7X was the second most expensive luxury SUV made by General Motors, the most expensive being the Cadillac Escalade. GM had marketed the Saab 9-7X as a direct competitor to more upmarket luxury SUVs, like the Volvo XC90 and the Volkswagen Touareg.
All Saab 9-7X models came standard with side curtain airbags, leather interior, heated front seats, automatic climate control, an AM/FM radio with a CD player and Bose speakers, as well as XM Satellite Radio, and OnStar. HomeLink was standard as well. All Saab 9-7X vehicles came with all-wheel drive as standard equipment. A touchscreen navigation system was available as an optional feature.
For the 2006 model year, the Linear trim level was renamed as the 4.2i, and the Arc trim level was renamed as the 5.3i. The 4.2i trim level comes with the 4.2L inline six engine, and was rated at 285 hp (213 kW) and 276 lb⋅ft (374 N⋅m) of torque. The 5.3L V8 engine was rated at an estimated 300 hp (224 kW) and 330 lb⋅ft (447 N⋅m) of torque.
The Saab 9-7X equipped with the 5.3L V8 engine has the capability to tow up to 6,500 lb (2,948 kg).
For the 2008 model year, the new Aero trim level was added as a more luxurious version of the Chevrolet Trailblazer SS. Both the Saab 9-7X Aero and the Chevrolet Trailblazer SS came with the 6.0L LS2 V8 engine, the same engine used in the 2005 to 2007 model of the Chevrolet Corvette modified for use in GMT360 vehicles. The Saab 9-7X also came with a 4L60E four speed automatic transmission as standard equipment.
Also for the 2008 model year, the Saab 9-7X with the 5.3L V8 engine was available with Displacement on Demand technology to reduce fuel consumption. Saab had made enhancements to the vehicle's GM made chassis. Saab had also added a lower ride height, firmer springs and shock absorbers, larger brakes with steel front calipers, a strengthened frame, steering revisions and a thicker front stabilizer bar.
A self leveling rear air suspension was also added. The 9-7X, along with the other GM midsize SUVs built on GM's GMT360 platform were originally scheduled to be redesigned for the model year of 2007, but instead, GM had decided to continue the production the GMT360 SUVs and to only give them minor updates.
The 9-7X as well as the other GMT360 midsize SUVs made by GM were not scheduled to be redesigned, updated, or to continue production after the 2009 model year, as a result of GM closing their Moraine, Ohio assembly plant, where the GMT360 SUVs were built on December 23, 2008. As a result, the Saab 9-7X was discontinued after the 2009 model year.

BOTH SAY MY VEHICLE IS NOT COVERED UNDER THIS RECALL BECAUSE THEY HAVE DETERMINED THAT THE HEADLAMP FAILURE DOESN'T OCCUR ON VEHICLES WITH HIGH INTENSITY DISCHARGE HEADLAMPS WHICH MY VEHICLE HAS. YET I'VE EXPERIENCED THIS FRIGHTENING AND DEADLY FAILURE TWICE NOW. MY VEHICLE SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER THIS RECALL. IN THOSE FAILURE SITUATIONS THE CAR WAS IN MOTION IN DARKNESS ON A RURAL UNLIT ROAD, IT WAS WINTER AND VERY COLD (~0 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT)

- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: FILED A COMPLAINT ABOUT THIS ISSUE BEFORE (03/2015) AND HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM, HEADLIGHTS FLICKER AND SOMETIMES GO COMPLETELY OFF WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAYS AND CITY STREETS. I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE WHEN THIS ISSUE WAS FIRST KNOWN, AFTER THAT I DID NOT RECEIVE ANY OTHER PAPERWORK CONCERNING THIS ISSUE. THE SAAB NORTH AMERICA OFFICE AND THE LOCAL DEALER KEEP ON TELLING ME THAT ME VEHICLE DOES NOT HAVE THE HID HEADLIGHTS (THIS IS STAMPED ON THE HEADLIGHT HOUSING AND WHEN I SEARCHED THE VIN IT DOES SHOW IT WAS INSTALLED ON THIS MODEL). I HAVE TRIED TO CHANGE THE HEADLIGHT DRIVERS MODULE (HDM) BUT STILL THE SAME PROBLEM, THOUGHT MAYBE BECAUSE I PURCHASED AN OEM PRODUCT IT COULD BE ALSO BE BAD. PURCHASED AN AFTERMARKET HDM AND STILL THE SAME, I DO NOT KNOW WHERE TO GO WITH THIS, I WAS EMPLOYED BY DOD AS A FLEET MANAGER SO I AM NOT STUPID WHEN IT COMES TO A VEHICLE WITH ISSUES. THINK THAT GM IS JUST TRYING TO GET OVER AND DO NOT WANT TO ACCEPT IT IS A PROBLEM WITH THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. *JS
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-02-11
- VIN: 5S3ET13M062
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
- Summary: HID HEADLIGHTS FLICKER AND THEN TURN OFF. NO RHYME OR REASON; COLD WEATHER AND HOT WEATHER. HEADLIGHTS WILL EVENTUALLY FLICKER AND TURN OFF. I CAN MANUALLY FLIP THE HEADLIGHTS SWITCH OFF AND THEN ON AGAIN AND THEY WILL COME BACK ON. ONCE THEY COME BACK ON, THEY CAN STAY ON FOR ANOTHER FEW SECONDS OR MINUTES, BUT THEY WILL EVENTUALLY FLICKER AND TURN OFF AGAIN. MOST TIMES IT'S JUST ONE HEADLIGHT AT A TIME BECAUSE I DON'T GIVE IT ENOUGH TIME BEFORE TURNING IT BACK ON BEFORE THE SECOND ONE GOES OUT. BOTH HAVE GONE OUT BEFORE AT THE SAME TIME. IN MY 12 MILE ROUTE TO WORK IN THE MORNING, I MAY HAVE TO TURN MY HEADLIGHTS ON AGAIN ABOUT 25 TIMES AT ITS WORST. SOMETIMES THEY WILL STAY ON AND SOMETIMES IT WON'T EVEN FLICKER AT ALL. NO RHYME OR REASON. IT'S DANGEROUS FOR THE OBVIOUS REASON BUT ALSO PEOPLE THINK YOU ARE FLASHING YOUR LIGHTS AT THEM. CAN CAUSE ROAD RAGE IN PEOPLE'SO WHAT'S WORSE? DRIVING DANGEROUSLY WITH NO HEADLIGHTS OR SOMEONE GETTING ANGRY B/C YOU KEEP FLASHING YOUR HEADLIGHTS AT THEM? DANGEROUS NO MATTER HOW YOU LOOK AT IT. ALSO POLICE MAY THINK YOU ARE TRYING TO WARN PEOPLE ABOUT THEM BY FLASHING MY HEADLIGHTS! AS FAR AS I CAN TELL RIGHT NOW, IT'S JUST THE LOW BEAM HIDS, NOT THE HIGH BEAMS AND NOT THE YELLOW DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS. VOLTAGE HAS BEEN TESTED AND THEY SAY IT'S FINE AT 14 VOLTS FOR BOTH HEADLIGHTS EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE FLICKERING/TURNED OFF WHILE BEING TESTED. SHOP WANTS ME TO REPLACE HID HEADLIGHTS ALTOGETHER WHICH IS OVER $300 NOT INCLUDING LABOR. HAS BEEN HAPPENING INTERMITTENTLY SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR USED IN 2009. IS GETTING WORSE AS MILEAGE GOES UP IT SEEMS. 87,000 MILES AS OF 12/23/2015. PURCHASED THE CAR IN FEB.2009 WITH 20,000 MILES. LIGHTS WILL FLICKER IN IDLE OR WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED. ALSO LOUD BUZZING FROM BACK SPEAKERS AT TIMES AND STABILITRAK LIGHT COMES ON AND THEN WILL GO OFF RANDOMLY.

THE SPEED OF THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT PASS 25MPH, AND THERE WASN'T EVEN ENOUGH POWER TO CLIMB A SMALL HILL. AFTER DEPLOYING THE HAZARD INDICATOR, AND PULLING OVER, THE ENGINE WAS SHUT OFF. UPON WAITING 2-3 MINUTES AND RESTARTING THE ENGINE, THE PROBLEM DID NOT RECUR. SINCE THEN, THE PROBLEM HAS RECURRED AT LEAST 3 DOZEN TIMES, AND IT IS BECOMING MORE FREQUENT. ALSO HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM DUE TO INTERFERENCE COMING THROUGH THE STEREO SYSTEM AND CREATES A HUMMING/BUZZING SOUND COMING FROM THE BACK SPEAKERS. HAD A CERTIFIED SAAB TECHNICIAN TROUBLESHOOT THIS PROBLEM AND FOUND A PROBLEM WITH THE GROUND SYSTEM (ELECTRICAL) IN THE REAR SPEAKERS/EQUALIZER. I AM PRESUMING THAT THIS MAY HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE WHOLE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM (TO INCLUDE THE HEADLIGHTS, EQUALIZERS, SPEAKERS) OF THIS VEHICLE. JUST HAD A RECALL TAKEN CARE OF TO REPLACE THE FRONT DRIVERS DOOR POWER WINDOW MODULE. *TR

2006 Saab 9-7x recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2006 Saab 9-7x.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix, 2006-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2007 Buick Rainier, Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT, GMC Envoy XL, 2006-2008 Isuzu Ascender, and Saab 9-7x vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the headlamp driver module (HDM) may overheat and fail, causing the headlamps and daytime running lights to not illuminate.
- Consequence: Headlamps that do not illuminate reduce the driver's ability to see the roadway and reduce the vehicle's visibility to oncoming vehicles, both of which increase the risk of a vehicle crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the HDM, free of charge. The recall began on May 17, 2016. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300 or Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737. GM's number for this recall is 14291.

Fluid may enter the driver's door master power window switch module, causing corrosion that could result in a short in the circuit board. A short may cause the power door lock and power window switches to function intermittently or become inoperative. The short may also cause overheating, which could melt components of the door module, producing odor, smoke, or a fire.
- Consequence: A short in the circuit board could lead to a fire, increasing the risk of personal injury. A fire could occur even while the vehicle is not in use. As a precaution, owners are advised to park outside until the remedy has been made.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the part number on the door module, and install a new door module if necessary, free of charge. Parts for the remedy are not currently available. An interim letter was mailed to owners in August 2014. A second owner letter will be mailed when parts are available. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-462-8782 (GMC), 1-800-955-9007 (SAAB), and 1-800-255-6727 (Isuzu). GM's number for this recall is 14309. NOTE: This recall provides a new remedy for all vehicles covered by recall 13V-248. Vehicles whose modules were modified but not replaced as part of the previous recall remedy must have their vehicles remedied again under this campaign.

What a great vehicle! Let me start by saying that you don't need to worry about what KBB, NADA, Black Book, and Edmund's say about the price. Due to its rarity and style, this vehicle is fetching $2-5k over book value. For my location, it was stated to be worth $5500-7500, but since my state gets tons of snow for 6-8 months out of the year, 4x4 / AWD vehicles carry an extra premium beyond that. These sites / books never take location and needs / demands into account. I was able to negotiate the initial asking price of $12000 down to $7500. As I live in Alaska, 4x4 / AWD vehicles have a huge premium, especially as winter approaches. Currently, similar vehicles are listed on eBay for around $6500 to $12000. When I purchased it this summer, mine only had 84400 miles, which is low for a 10-year-old vehicle. The other reason for purchasing this vehicle was because my last car, a 2014 Cruze with 23k miles, was horrible! It had the worst clutch ever, no power, and was uncomfortable for my wife and kids. I also took a $1500 hit because the front seat was killing my lower back. I was tired of being kicked on trips, and my wife is unable to drive a manual due to spinal fusion. Stepping up from a car with a mere 138hp and 128tq into something over double the power was well worth it. The 9-7X's power feels tremendous since 90% torque is available at 1700rpm and continues this path through the majority of its power band. Having owned a few sub-7 and 6-second cars over the years, this one feels a bit quicker than the 7.6 seconds quoted in Car&Driver. Most long-term testers lose anywhere from 3-7/10th after 40-60k miles, but engine tolerance has been so tight this last 20 years that many vehicles actually feel stronger after a couple of years of ownership. However, this is just my personal experience. I would guess that it takes 7.2 seconds to reach 60mph with a good launch. I only did this once during the test drive.Either way, this vehicle has plenty of power for most people and can easily get you ahead at stop lights if you're not careful. I usually only need 1700-1900rpm to maintain a slight lead. The 4.2i pulls nicely with a unique, but similar straight-6 sound. Although parts can be hard to find, I would recommend purchasing an extra set of vents and safely storing them because eventually the originals will break while detailing. The same goes for the radio and climate control, which can experience paint wear, and there are few options to restore them. Some articles say this vehicle is not worth it, but if you actually drive a regular Trailblazer, Envoy, etc, you will notice a night and day difference. The 9-7X has airbags in the rear for starters, and the general suspension geometry was completely re-calibrated with components. Having driven my uncle's Trailblazer with new struts, my 9-7X with original parts easily outshines it with handling. The SAAB feels like a different vehicle altogether since the interior fit and finish is superior, plus the handling is just so much better. Basically, do not read those articles. Trust me, go drive a Trailblazer and then drive a 9-7X. The best part is that Trailblazers are everywhere and this should not be a problem. Also, Trailblazers are typically priced similarly to a 9-7X and the SAAB has far more features. Gas mileage is great considering the weight and power, and I average 18 in mixed driving, but on one trip I got 23 mpg for over 200 miles. However, this is not our long-distance hauler since my wife has a 2016 Escape and she gets 28 combined with 33-34 on the highway. Basically, this is a very personal feeling vehicle and I hope this review conveys that. -----Updated mileage from 85500 to 89500----- My feelings have not changed since writing this review. The AWD system is not the best compared to my wife's Escape or my old Subaru. However, it does well enough and since this vehicle is nice, I may install a transfer case from an Envoy with the Envoy's locking rear end.The AWD system engages when it detects slip, which can sometimes feel abrupt or brutal depending on how much throttle is used or if the rear wheels are on a slippery surface while the front wheels are not.

I can tell that you are a Saab enthusiast, having owned a number of their cars. I agree that the 9-7 is a nice SUV, but after driving it for a few weeks, you may have noticed some subtle GM influences both inside and outside the car. In my opinion, this kind of cheapens the Saab name. However, Saab was able to enhance the vehicle just enough to make it enjoyable to drive, despite the GM components. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

When I was searching for a new lease vehicle, I was intrigued by the idea of getting an SUV that offered both luxury and performance at an affordable price. The Saab 9-7X exceeded my expectations in this regard. Although it may not be the top luxury SUV on the market, it outperformed similarly equipped competitors by a whopping $10,000. Even though Saab enthusiasts may not be thrilled with it, it won me over as someone who never would have considered a Saab. The 9-7X seamlessly integrates performance, luxury, ride, braking, handling, and ergonomics, all while looking fantastic.

The whistle coming from my tires was a defect, but it will be fixed this week. Despite the left axle problem, I was pleased with the handling of my SUV when I drove my daughter to college with a 4 x 8 U-Haul trailer, averaging 16 miles per gallon. Although I miss having space for items around the front seat, I love the easy access to everything. However, the back seat backs are stiff, which has caused complaints from passengers. Overall, I enjoy my SUV, but I would like better fuel efficiency. Thank you for sharing your experience!

The vehicle boasts considerably sportier handling compared to other vehicles on its shared platform. If any issues arise, the dealership handles them with the utmost professionalism and minimal questions asked.

I would suggest avoiding this SUV. During the leasing process, GM offered us a promotion of 27 months. Unfortunately, this morning, for the fifth time, the engine turned over but did not start. I still have four months left until the 27 months are up. This experience has taught me to be cautious in the future. This is one of the reasons why leasing autos can be a good option. If I had purchased this SUV, I would be extremely frustrated right now. Although the car drives nicely, it has poor gas mileage and has required frequent trips to the shop. On a positive note, the interior fit and finish are still in good condition. During delivery, we noticed that the XM/Radio antenna and R/S mirror were not installed properly. Best regards, NYBULLY

It sounds like you're really enjoying your new car! It has great acceleration and handles well on corners. While the fuel economy could be better, it's hard not to push the gas pedal. Plus, it comes loaded with a lot of features. Overall, it sounds like you're a satisfied customer. And with winter coming up, you're looking forward to driving it in the snow!
