2007 Saab 9-7x problems

saab logo

The Saab 9-7X is a mid-size luxury SUV that was built by General Motors for the American market and sold under the Saab marque. The 9-7X was first revealed at the 2004 New York International Auto Show, and was available starting in the model year of 2005, as a replacement for the Oldsmobile Bravada.

Information and vehicle details

The Saab 9-7X was introduced in 2004 for the 2005 model year and was made by General Motors, and the 9-7X was also built on the GMT360 platform, which is the same platform that the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy, Isuzu Ascender, Oldsmobile Bravada, and Buick Rainier were all built on. The 9-7X was Saab's first-ever SUV.

The Saab 9-7X was originally available in two trim levels for 2005: the Linear and the Arc. The Saab 9-7X did not offer a turbocharged engine, quite unusual for a Saab vehicle. All Saab 9-7X vehicles come with all wheel drive (2005 was the first year all wheel drive was offered by Saab), eighteen inch sport wheels, and sport tuned suspension as standard equipment. The 9-7X was built at GM's Moraine, Ohio assembly plant. The Saab 9-7X is classified as a midsize luxury SUV.

When the 2005 Saab 9-7X had been introduced, it had served as the replacement for the Oldsmobile Bravada (which was discontinued as a direct result of the Oldsmobile brand being discontinued in 2004), along with the Buick Rainier. Most of the exterior styling on the Saab 9-7X and on the Buick Rainier was a direct transfer from the discontinued Bravada, except for a front fascia designed to resemble other Saab vehicles.

From 2005 to 2009, the Saab 9-7X was the second most expensive luxury SUV made by General Motors, the most expensive being the Cadillac Escalade. GM had marketed the Saab 9-7X as a direct competitor to more upmarket luxury SUVs, like the Volvo XC90 and the Volkswagen Touareg.

All Saab 9-7X models came standard with side curtain airbags, leather interior, heated front seats, automatic climate control, an AM/FM radio with a CD player and Bose speakers, as well as XM Satellite Radio, and OnStar. HomeLink was standard as well. All Saab 9-7X vehicles came with all-wheel drive as standard equipment. A touchscreen navigation system was available as an optional feature.

For the 2006 model year, the Linear trim level was renamed as the 4.2i, and the Arc trim level was renamed as the 5.3i. The 4.2i trim level comes with the 4.2L inline six engine, and was rated at 285 hp (213 kW) and 276 lb⋅ft (374 N⋅m) of torque. The 5.3L V8 engine was rated at an estimated 300 hp (224 kW) and 330 lb⋅ft (447 N⋅m) of torque.

The Saab 9-7X equipped with the 5.3L V8 engine has the capability to tow up to 6,500 lb (2,948 kg).

For the 2008 model year, the new Aero trim level was added as a more luxurious version of the Chevrolet Trailblazer SS. Both the Saab 9-7X Aero and the Chevrolet Trailblazer SS came with the 6.0L LS2 V8 engine, the same engine used in the 2005 to 2007 model of the Chevrolet Corvette modified for use in GMT360 vehicles. The Saab 9-7X also came with a 4L60E four speed automatic transmission as standard equipment.

Also for the 2008 model year, the Saab 9-7X with the 5.3L V8 engine was available with Displacement on Demand technology to reduce fuel consumption. Saab had made enhancements to the vehicle's GM made chassis. Saab had also added a lower ride height, firmer springs and shock absorbers, larger brakes with steel front calipers, a strengthened frame, steering revisions and a thicker front stabilizer bar.

A self leveling rear air suspension was also added. The 9-7X, along with the other GM midsize SUVs built on GM's GMT360 platform were originally scheduled to be redesigned for the model year of 2007, but instead, GM had decided to continue the production the GMT360 SUVs and to only give them minor updates.

The 9-7X as well as the other GMT360 midsize SUVs made by GM were not scheduled to be redesigned, updated, or to continue production after the 2009 model year, as a result of GM closing their Moraine, Ohio assembly plant, where the GMT360 SUVs were built on December 23, 2008. As a result, the Saab 9-7X was discontinued after the 2009 model year.

Common 2007 Saab 9-7x problems

The Saab 9-7X, a mid-size luxury SUV, was produced from 2005 to 2009. While many owners have reported positive experiences with the vehicle, some common problems have been noted based on owner complaints.

  • Drivetrain issues: The 9-7X ranks 3rd in reliability out of 8 Saab models, with owners reporting 4 complaints, mostly about drivetrain issues.
  • Fuel gauge inaccuracies: Some owners have reported inaccurate fuel gauge readings in their 9-7X vehicles, which can lead to issues with fuel management and unexpected fuel usage.
  • Windshield wiper malfunction: A few owners have reported unintentional operation of their windshield wipers, which can be a safety concern during driving.
  • Headlight issues: The 9-7X has been known to have low beam headlights that suddenly shut off, even though the lights themselves are perfectly fine. This issue is caused by a defective headlamp driver module, which is responsible for distributing power to the lights.
  • Interior quality: Some owners have reported dissatisfaction with the interior of the 9-7X, stating that it is too GM-like and lacks sufficient storage space compared to other SUVs in its class.

It is important to note that these problems are based on owner complaints and may not affect all 9-7X vehicles. Additionally, some of these issues may have been addressed through recalls or technical service bulletins issued by Saab. When considering the purchase of a used 9-7X, it is recommended to thoroughly research the vehicle's history and have it inspected by a qualified mechanic to ensure that any potential issues are identified and addressed.

I DON'T SEE A RECALL FOR THIS IN MY RESEARCH FOR MY 2007 97-X. IS THERE A BROADER SCOPE RECALL?? SOME SITES INDICATE A WILLINGNESS OF GM TO PAY HALF THE COST?? SEEMS ODD THAT IF THIS IS SOMETHING THAT IS COMMON AMONG GM VEHICLES WHY WOULD GM NOT HONOR A REPAIR OF A KNOWN FAULTY DESIGN??

2007 Saab 9-7x recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2007 Saab 9-7x.

2015-08-14
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix, 2006-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2007 Buick Rainier, Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT, GMC Envoy XL, 2006-2008 Isuzu Ascender, and Saab 9-7x vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the headlamp driver module (HDM) may overheat and fail, causing the headlamps and daytime running lights to not illuminate.
  • Consequence: Headlamps that do not illuminate reduce the driver's ability to see the roadway and reduce the vehicle's visibility to oncoming vehicles, both of which increase the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the HDM, free of charge. The recall began on May 17, 2016. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300 or Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737. GM's number for this recall is 14291.

  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: VISIBILITY:POWER WINDOW DEVICES AND CONTROLS
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 SAAB 9-7x; 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT and GMC Envoy XL; and 2006-2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier and Isuzu Ascender vehicles. Fluid may enter the driver's door master power window switch module, causing corrosion that could result in a short in the circuit board. A short may cause the power door lock and power window switches to function intermittently or become inoperative. The short may also cause overheating, which could melt components of the door module, producing odor, smoke, or a fire.
  • Consequence: A short in the circuit board could lead to a fire, increasing the risk of personal injury. A fire could occur even while the vehicle is not in use. As a precaution, owners are advised to park outside until the remedy has been made.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the part number on the door module, and install a new door module if necessary, free of charge. Parts for the remedy are not currently available. An interim letter was mailed to owners in August 2014. A second owner letter will be mailed when parts are available. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-462-8782 (GMC), 1-800-955-9007 (SAAB), and 1-800-255-6727 (Isuzu). GM's number for this recall is 14309. NOTE: This recall provides a new remedy for all vehicles covered by recall 13V-248. Vehicles whose modules were modified but not replaced as part of the previous recall remedy must have their vehicles remedied again under this campaign.

  • Summary: General Motors (GM) is recalling certain model year 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT and GMC Envoy XL and 2006-2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier, SAAB 9-7x, and Isuzu Ascender vehicles, originally sold or currently registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia. • Remedy: Parts for this recall are expected to available in March 2013. GM will notify Buick, Chevrolet, and GMC owners when parts are available. Buick owners may contact the owner center at 1-800-521-7300, Chevrolet owners at 1-866-694-6546, and GMC owners at 1-866-996-9463. Negative 2007 Saab 9-7x car reviews

We bought this vehicle used in 2011 with around 35000 miles on it. Over the years, we've had a few issues with it, such as the transmission going out in less than two years, the fuel sensor breaking (which we fixed under the recall), and the oil pressure sensor breaking (which we fixed ourselves). We also had to replace the LED brake light in the back for $150, and the cup holder that pops out near the radio broke. Unfortunately, it was poorly designed and can only hold a small can of soda or a small fountain drink, causing spills on the floor. The check tire pressure and service tire monitor lights come on occasionally, even when there's nothing wrong with the tires. Additionally, the traction control sometimes takes effect in the middle of summer. We did have some issues with the power seats, but we found that hitting the front of the seat hard would make it work again. The cup holders in the front and back were also poorly designed, making it difficult to hold larger drinks. The jack is located underneath the middle seats, which can be inconvenient if you have a car seat back there. Overall, we've had some minor issues with the vehicle, but we still enjoy driving it.The vehicle has some great features such as a powerful engine, memory seats, a spacious cargo area, a built-in air compressor, and great towing capacity. Although we are switching to a van, we still have this vehicle. However, we have noticed some issues with the transmission and feel that it may need to be repaired soon.

It's really frustrating when you can't find spare keys, isn't it?

I took a look at the GMC Envoy Denali and SLT with the 4.2 engine. I noticed a significant difference between the Denali and the SLT with the 4.2 engine. The Saab 9-7x, on the other hand, offers a comfortable and smooth ride that falls right in between the Envoy Denali and SLT. The 9-7x provides a more luxurious experience than the Envoy SLT, and its lower profile and larger wheels make a noticeable difference in ride and handling. Unless you plan on going off-road, I would highly recommend choosing the 9-7x over its GM counterparts. It's important to note that the quality and fit and finish are still GM, so it's not quite on par with a Lexus.

I have owned three SAABs in the past and have always loved them. However, my recent purchase of the 9-7X has been a major disappointment. I had hoped that this car would provide enough space for the tall men in my life to travel comfortably, and while the space is great and comfy, the car has had multiple major issues. Additionally, it is sluggish when going uphill and has poor gas mileage. Despite these issues, the DVD and multi-CD players are sweet, and the on-board air-compressor is a great asset. Unfortunately, the car has spent more time in the dealership garage than on the road with me, and has cost me a lot of time and money. I am looking forward to trading it in soon!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my Saab. I bought it two years ago and, at the beginning, it had some mechanical issues due to the previous owners. However, once I got it fixed, I was pleasantly surprised by how powerful the engine is. Additionally, the interior is quite comfortable.

This car drives and handles well. When I bought it, it was my 4th SUV and it has been the best. Although it's time for a newer vehicle, I hate to part with it. Unfortunately, SAAB let us down when they went out of business.

This is a lovely SUV. It looks great and handles like a car.

My wife and I got the 9-7X 5.3i this past June and we absolutely love it! The styling is fantastic, with a clean front end and a sporty look thanks to the lowered suspension. We always get compliments on how great it looks, definitely better than the other platform-mates.

  5. Darron Homenick 2024-05-17

Your Saab SUV sounds like a fantastic car to drive! It's great to hear that you find it comfortable and enjoyable to use every day. It's interesting to note that the GM SUV platform may provide greater reliability compared to its Swedish sedan cousins, but only time will tell. Additionally, having an unusual SUV like yours must be a lot of fun, and it's great to hear that you feel it represents a terrific bargain in the used car market. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with your Saab SUV!
