2005 Saab 9-7x problems

saab logo

The Saab 9-7X is a mid-size luxury SUV that was built by General Motors for the American market and sold under the Saab marque. The 9-7X was first revealed at the 2004 New York International Auto Show, and was available starting in the model year of 2005, as a replacement for the Oldsmobile Bravada.

Information and vehicle details

The Saab 9-7X was introduced in 2004 for the 2005 model year and was made by General Motors, and the 9-7X was also built on the GMT360 platform, which is the same platform that the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy, Isuzu Ascender, Oldsmobile Bravada, and Buick Rainier were all built on. The 9-7X was Saab's first-ever SUV.

The Saab 9-7X was originally available in two trim levels for 2005: the Linear and the Arc. The Saab 9-7X did not offer a turbocharged engine, quite unusual for a Saab vehicle. All Saab 9-7X vehicles come with all wheel drive (2005 was the first year all wheel drive was offered by Saab), eighteen inch sport wheels, and sport tuned suspension as standard equipment. The 9-7X was built at GM's Moraine, Ohio assembly plant. The Saab 9-7X is classified as a midsize luxury SUV.

When the 2005 Saab 9-7X had been introduced, it had served as the replacement for the Oldsmobile Bravada (which was discontinued as a direct result of the Oldsmobile brand being discontinued in 2004), along with the Buick Rainier. Most of the exterior styling on the Saab 9-7X and on the Buick Rainier was a direct transfer from the discontinued Bravada, except for a front fascia designed to resemble other Saab vehicles.

From 2005 to 2009, the Saab 9-7X was the second most expensive luxury SUV made by General Motors, the most expensive being the Cadillac Escalade. GM had marketed the Saab 9-7X as a direct competitor to more upmarket luxury SUVs, like the Volvo XC90 and the Volkswagen Touareg.

All Saab 9-7X models came standard with side curtain airbags, leather interior, heated front seats, automatic climate control, an AM/FM radio with a CD player and Bose speakers, as well as XM Satellite Radio, and OnStar. HomeLink was standard as well. All Saab 9-7X vehicles came with all-wheel drive as standard equipment. A touchscreen navigation system was available as an optional feature.

For the 2006 model year, the Linear trim level was renamed as the 4.2i, and the Arc trim level was renamed as the 5.3i. The 4.2i trim level comes with the 4.2L inline six engine, and was rated at 285 hp (213 kW) and 276 lb⋅ft (374 N⋅m) of torque. The 5.3L V8 engine was rated at an estimated 300 hp (224 kW) and 330 lb⋅ft (447 N⋅m) of torque.

The Saab 9-7X equipped with the 5.3L V8 engine has the capability to tow up to 6,500 lb (2,948 kg).

For the 2008 model year, the new Aero trim level was added as a more luxurious version of the Chevrolet Trailblazer SS. Both the Saab 9-7X Aero and the Chevrolet Trailblazer SS came with the 6.0L LS2 V8 engine, the same engine used in the 2005 to 2007 model of the Chevrolet Corvette modified for use in GMT360 vehicles. The Saab 9-7X also came with a 4L60E four speed automatic transmission as standard equipment.

Also for the 2008 model year, the Saab 9-7X with the 5.3L V8 engine was available with Displacement on Demand technology to reduce fuel consumption. Saab had made enhancements to the vehicle's GM made chassis. Saab had also added a lower ride height, firmer springs and shock absorbers, larger brakes with steel front calipers, a strengthened frame, steering revisions and a thicker front stabilizer bar.

A self leveling rear air suspension was also added. The 9-7X, along with the other GM midsize SUVs built on GM's GMT360 platform were originally scheduled to be redesigned for the model year of 2007, but instead, GM had decided to continue the production the GMT360 SUVs and to only give them minor updates.

The 9-7X as well as the other GMT360 midsize SUVs made by GM were not scheduled to be redesigned, updated, or to continue production after the 2009 model year, as a result of GM closing their Moraine, Ohio assembly plant, where the GMT360 SUVs were built on December 23, 2008. As a result, the Saab 9-7X was discontinued after the 2009 model year.

Common 2005 Saab 9-7x problems

The Saab 9-7X, a midsize SUV produced between 2005 and 2009, shares its platform with the Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, and Isuzu Ascender. While the vehicle was designed to appeal to a niche market seeking both ruggedness and the quirky Swedish image of Saab, it has faced several common problems reported by owners.

  • Fuel Gauge Inaccuracy: One of the specific complaints about the 2006 Saab 9-7X is an inaccurate fuel gauge. This issue affects 100% of the reported cases for the 2006 model year, indicating a widespread problem.
  • Windshield Wipers Operating Unintentionally: Another complaint about the 2006 Saab 9-7X is the windshield wipers operating unintentionally. This issue also affects 100% of the reported cases for the 2006 model year.
  • Chatter on Turns and Stuck in All-Wheel Drive: The 2006 Saab 9-7X has been reported to have chatter on turns and being stuck in all-wheel drive, affecting 100% of the reported cases for that model year.
  • Fuel System: The 2006 Saab 9-7X has been reported to have a faulty fuel system, affecting 100% of the reported cases for that model year.
  • Exterior: The 2006 Saab 9-7X has been reported to have exterior issues, affecting 100% of the reported cases for that model year.
  • Interior: The 2006 Saab 9-7X has been reported to have interior issues, affecting 100% of the reported cases for that model year.
  • Electrical System: The 2006 Saab 9-7X has been reported to have electrical system issues, affecting 100% of the reported cases for that model year.
  • Suspension System: The suspension system of the Saab 9-7X may require resetting, which can be done by disconnecting the battery for about 15 minutes and then reconnecting and starting the vehicle to see if the sagging is gone. If not, the common reason for this to happen is shorted height sensors at the rear wheels. The sensors are the most common cause; however, the pumps could also cause the sagging.
  • Power Window Devices and Controls: The 2005-2007 Saab 9-7X, along with several other GM models, is part of a recall for potential issues with power window devices and controls. The recall affects vehicles with sunroofs, and the remedy involves replacing the power window switch with an improved one.

These common problems with the Saab 9-7X are based on complaints from owners of this car and are not exhaustive. They are intended to provide a general overview of the issues that have been reported and should be considered when evaluating the vehicle's reliability and potential maintenance needs.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-04-12
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 5S3ET13M052
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: MANUFACTURER: GENERAL MOTORS LLC MFR'S REPORT DATE: AUG 15, 2012 NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 12V406000 NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: EA12004 COMPONENT: VISIBILITY, POWER WINDOW DEVICES AND CONTROLS WAS ADVISED IN 2015 THAT THE DRIVERS DOOR MODULE WAS UNDER RECALL AS A FIRE HAZARD. IT WAS REPLACED. THE REPLACEMENT MODULE STARTED ON FIRE. THE LOCAL DEALER BLAMED 'RAIN WATER GETTING IN IT.' I ORDERED A BRAND NEW DDM THAT HAS NEVER SEEN THE ELEMENTS OR BEEN INSTALLED IN A CAR ' AND IT HAS THE SAME CORROSION THAT CAUSED MY FIRE! SEE PIC. TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY THE LOCAL GMC AND CHEVY DEALERS BOTH SAY 'OH THAT'S A SAAB, WE CAN'T PROGRAM THAT.' THE NEAREST DEALER WILLING TO DO THIS WORK IS ZIMBRICK IN MADISON WISCONSIN. IT'S 150 MILES AWAY. THEY'RE STATING THEY CAN'T DO THE WORK A SECOND TIME UNDER THE CALL. THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH MY WINDOW SWITCH BEFORE THEY DID THE RECALL WORK, AND SUPPOSEDLY THE 'SUPERIOR' FIXED PART IN FACT CAUGHT ON FIRE. IF THIS WAS A TRAILBLAZER OR AN ENVOY THEY'D DO THE WORK BUT BECAUSE IT'S A SAAB THEY'RE BEING STUPID AND SAYING THEY CAN'T WORK ON SAAB'S. IT'S THE SAME THING. BOTTOM LINE: THE RECALL WORK DOES NOT MITIGATE THE FIRE HAZARD AND BRAND NEW REPLACEMENT MODULES HAVE THE SAME CORROSION THAT GM BLAMES ON 'WATER GETTING INTO THE DDM.' I CHALLENGE THAT NARRATIVE AND BELIEVE ALL THESE VEHICLES MAY STILL BE A FIRE HAZARD

  • VIN: 5S3ET13M152
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I HAVE HAD MY USED VEHICLE FOR 20 MONTHS AND IT HAS LESS THAN 78,000 MILES. THE 2005 SAAB 9-7X STALLS WHILE DRIVING. SOMETIMES IT WILL RE-START AND RUN FOR A LITTLE WHILE AND THEN STALL OUT AGAIN. WHEN IT STALLS I HAVE TO QUICKLY TRY TO GET OUT OF TRAFFIC AND PULL OVER. MOST OF THE TIME THE VEHICLE WILL NOT RE-START AND MUST BE TOWED. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST SEVEN TIMES. THE FIRST TIME THIS STARTED HAPPENING THERE WAS APPROXMATELY 60,000 MILES (MAYBE A LITTLE MORE) ON THE VEHICLE. HERE ARE A COUPLE INSTANCES OF WHEN THE VEHICLE STALLED: ONE TIME I WAS AT A STOP LIGHT AT A BUSY INTERSECTION AT NIGHT (APPROXIMATELY 60,000 MILES ON VEHICLE AT THIS TIME) AND ANOTHER TIME I WAS DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY (APPROXIMATELY 78,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE THIS TIME). THE FIRST TIME (JUNE 2009) I TOOK MY VEHICLE IN FOR STALLING TO CONCOURS MOTORS ON SILVER SPRING DR IN MILWAUKEE WI. THEY HAD IT FOR 3 MONTHS AND FINALLY FIGURED OUT IT WAS THE FUSE BOX. THEY REPLACED THE FUSE BOX. THE VEHICLE RAN FINE FOR 6 MONTHS AND IT STARTED STALLING OUT AGAIN. THIS TIME (MARCH 2010) THE CAR DEALERSHIP THOUGHT IT WAS THE FUEL PUMP AND REPLACED IT. THEY FOUND OUT IT WAS NOT THE FUEL PUMP WHEN IT WOULD NOT TURN ON FOR THEM AFTER REPLACING THIS PART. THEY STILL HAVE THE VEHICLE IN THE SHOP AND DO NOT KNOW WHY IT CONTINUES TO STALL WHILE DRIVING. I DO NOT BELIEVE THIS IS A SAFE VEHICLE TO DRIVE.

Negative 2005 Saab 9-7x car reviews

  1. Lucious Heller 2024-07-14

I was really excited to finally buy my Saab after waiting for a year, but unfortunately it hasn't lived up to my expectations. Despite being designed by aircraft engineers, even my father, who was a project engineer on the F-14 from its inception, doesn't like it and has made some comments about it. I bought it for its sportiness, but I feel much safer driving my 77 Merc 280 SL Convert at 80 mph than this car at 65 mph. It also has a pretty low fuel efficiency, averaging only 11.5 miles per gallon and 14.3 mpg on long highway drives.

  2. Vern Hartmann 2024-06-05

My father is one of the designers of the F-14, and I have extensive knowledge of cars. I have noticed some issues with this car, such as the jerk-feel when shifting gears, the interior design lacking space, the rear cargo space that does not lie flat with rear seats down, the terrible suspension, the inability to seal sound of air from inside the car, the front bumper which popped off due to cheap plastic pins (bumpers cost min $1,250), the pulling out of alignment, and the blindspots. However, these issues are not uncommon in cars, and they can be easily fixed. I suggest adding sensors to aid in backing up and addressing the water leak issue. Overall, this car has great potential, and with some improvements, it can be a fantastic vehicle.

  3. Vicente Jast 2024-05-23

That's a really nice SUV, and it's fully loaded with the option of either a sunroof or a rear DVD player at no additional charge. It's basically a Chevy Trailblazer in disguise until the 9-6X arrives next year. The interior has lots of GM parts, which may raise questions about its long-term reliability. On the bright side, you won't see many others driving the same car down the street.

I have owned 8 SAABs in the past and recently purchased the 9-7 for its towing capacity. Although it can tow over 5000lbs and is comfortable, I have found the drive train to be disappointing. The MPG only averages 15 in mixed driving (approximately half city/half highway). I have noticed a lag on acceleration from a stop, which then comes on all at once. The transmission also shifts nervously in city driving, constantly fishing and clunking between gears. The engine and transmission combination remind me of a 60's Chevy pickup - completely unrefined. In hindsight, I wish I had bought the XC-90 instead.

The 2005 model experienced transmission failure at 40k miles and rusted transmission lines at 80k. Despite these issues, it is important to note that GM produces reliable vehicles overall.

Congratulations on your recent purchase of the Linear 97x! It's great to hear that you're enjoying it so much. Your experience with the Saab sounds fantastic, and it's wonderful to hear that it's the best vehicle you've ever owned. It's also exciting to hear that it's such a unique car on the road. The features you mentioned, such as XM, On-Star, premium leather, DVD, and side impact air bags, sound fantastic and it's great to hear that they come standard. It's clear that you're really enjoying the ride and I hope you continue to do so for the next 100,000 miles!

As someone who drives between 35,000 and 45,000 miles per year and is frequently in and out of vehicles, I have been searching for the perfect one for several months. However, nothing has really caught my eye until now. Despite being on a GM platform, the 9-7X is truly unique. It is the perfect vehicle for someone who spends a lot of time on the road. Not only is it very comfortable and user-friendly, but it is also surprisingly fuel efficient. Additionally, the 9-7X is priced competitively compared to its rivals, and the 3-year (36,000 mile) free scheduled maintenance is a great bonus. I highly recommend this vehicle to anyone in need of a reliable and enjoyable ride.

Fun, attractive, solid. You can tell I love this car! While it may not be the most fuel efficient, I don't mind the mileage cost because I just love driving and being in it. By the way, the XM radio doesn't hurt the comfort either.
