2008 Saab 9-7x problems
The Saab 9-7X is a mid-size luxury SUV that was built by General Motors for the American market and sold under the Saab marque. The 9-7X was first revealed at the 2004 New York International Auto Show, and was available starting in the model year of 2005, as a replacement for the Oldsmobile Bravada.
Information and vehicle details
The Saab 9-7X was introduced in 2004 for the 2005 model year and was made by General Motors, and the 9-7X was also built on the GMT360 platform, which is the same platform that the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy, Isuzu Ascender, Oldsmobile Bravada, and Buick Rainier were all built on. The 9-7X was Saab's first-ever SUV.
The Saab 9-7X was originally available in two trim levels for 2005: the Linear and the Arc. The Saab 9-7X did not offer a turbocharged engine, quite unusual for a Saab vehicle. All Saab 9-7X vehicles come with all wheel drive (2005 was the first year all wheel drive was offered by Saab), eighteen inch sport wheels, and sport tuned suspension as standard equipment. The 9-7X was built at GM's Moraine, Ohio assembly plant. The Saab 9-7X is classified as a midsize luxury SUV.
When the 2005 Saab 9-7X had been introduced, it had served as the replacement for the Oldsmobile Bravada (which was discontinued as a direct result of the Oldsmobile brand being discontinued in 2004), along with the Buick Rainier. Most of the exterior styling on the Saab 9-7X and on the Buick Rainier was a direct transfer from the discontinued Bravada, except for a front fascia designed to resemble other Saab vehicles.
From 2005 to 2009, the Saab 9-7X was the second most expensive luxury SUV made by General Motors, the most expensive being the Cadillac Escalade. GM had marketed the Saab 9-7X as a direct competitor to more upmarket luxury SUVs, like the Volvo XC90 and the Volkswagen Touareg.
All Saab 9-7X models came standard with side curtain airbags, leather interior, heated front seats, automatic climate control, an AM/FM radio with a CD player and Bose speakers, as well as XM Satellite Radio, and OnStar. HomeLink was standard as well. All Saab 9-7X vehicles came with all-wheel drive as standard equipment. A touchscreen navigation system was available as an optional feature.
For the 2006 model year, the Linear trim level was renamed as the 4.2i, and the Arc trim level was renamed as the 5.3i. The 4.2i trim level comes with the 4.2L inline six engine, and was rated at 285 hp (213 kW) and 276 lb⋅ft (374 N⋅m) of torque. The 5.3L V8 engine was rated at an estimated 300 hp (224 kW) and 330 lb⋅ft (447 N⋅m) of torque.
The Saab 9-7X equipped with the 5.3L V8 engine has the capability to tow up to 6,500 lb (2,948 kg).
For the 2008 model year, the new Aero trim level was added as a more luxurious version of the Chevrolet Trailblazer SS. Both the Saab 9-7X Aero and the Chevrolet Trailblazer SS came with the 6.0L LS2 V8 engine, the same engine used in the 2005 to 2007 model of the Chevrolet Corvette modified for use in GMT360 vehicles. The Saab 9-7X also came with a 4L60E four speed automatic transmission as standard equipment.
Also for the 2008 model year, the Saab 9-7X with the 5.3L V8 engine was available with Displacement on Demand technology to reduce fuel consumption. Saab had made enhancements to the vehicle's GM made chassis. Saab had also added a lower ride height, firmer springs and shock absorbers, larger brakes with steel front calipers, a strengthened frame, steering revisions and a thicker front stabilizer bar.
A self leveling rear air suspension was also added. The 9-7X, along with the other GM midsize SUVs built on GM's GMT360 platform were originally scheduled to be redesigned for the model year of 2007, but instead, GM had decided to continue the production the GMT360 SUVs and to only give them minor updates.
The 9-7X as well as the other GMT360 midsize SUVs made by GM were not scheduled to be redesigned, updated, or to continue production after the 2009 model year, as a result of GM closing their Moraine, Ohio assembly plant, where the GMT360 SUVs were built on December 23, 2008. As a result, the Saab 9-7X was discontinued after the 2009 model year.

Common 2008 Saab 9-7x problems
The Saab 9-7x, produced in 2008, is a premium midsize SUV that shares many components with General Motors vehicles. While the car has received positive reviews for its design and standard features, there are several common problems that owners have reported.
One of the most frequently reported issues is sagging rear suspension. This problem can lead to a decrease in ride quality and handling, as well as increased wear and tear on other suspension components. In some cases, the sagging suspension can cause the vehicle to bottom out, which can damage the undercarriage and lead to more expensive repairs.
Another common problem is sporadic operation of the all-wheel-drive system. This issue can manifest as a loss of traction or slippage in certain driving conditions, which can be dangerous in adverse weather or on uneven road surfaces. The problem is often caused by a malfunctioning transfer case or differential, which can be costly to repair or replace.
Tailgate malfunctions are also a common issue with the Saab 9-7x. Owners have reported problems with the tailgate opening or closing improperly, which can be inconvenient and potentially dangerous if items in the cargo area are not properly secured. This problem can be caused by a variety of factors, including faulty sensors, wiring issues, or mechanical failure of the tailgate latch or hinges.
The air compressor for the air suspension system can also be a problem area in the Saab 9-7x. This issue can cause the suspension to sag or fail to maintain proper ride height, which can affect handling and ride quality. In some cases, the compressor may fail completely, which can be a costly repair.
In addition to these common problems, the Saab 9-7x has also been known to have issues with low beam headlights suddenly shutting off. This problem is caused by a defective headlamp driver module, which is responsible for distributing power to the lights. This issue can be a safety concern, as it can reduce visibility while driving, particularly at night or in low-light conditions.
While the Saab 9-7x has received positive reviews for its design and standard features, these common problems can be a concern for potential buyers. It is important to thoroughly research any vehicle before making a purchase, and to be aware of any potential issues that may arise. Regular maintenance and inspections can help to identify and address these problems before they become more serious, potentially saving owners time and money in the long run.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-06-04
- VIN: 5S3ET13M082
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: WHILE OPERATING MY VEHICLE AT APPROX. 70 MPH ON AN INTERSTATE, MY PASSENGER BUMPED THE IGNITION KEY, LOCATED BETWEEN THE GEAR SHIFTER AND CENTER CONSOLE. MY VEHICLE SHUT OFF WHILE TRAVELING DOWN THE HWY, AND IT HAPPENED OTHER TIMES, TOO. I'VE HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS WITH THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR MODULE, WHICH HAS COMPLETELY STOPPED WORKING. IT HAS ALWAYS HAD PROBLEMS AFTER GETTING ONLY SLIGHTLY WET. I'VE HAD PROBLEMS WITH FRONT PASSENGER WINDOW, POSSIBLY CAUSED BY THE SAME PROBLEM, AND EVERY DOOR IS LIKELY AFFECTED. SINCE THE DRIVER SIDE IS USED MOST FREQUENTLY, THE PROBLEM JUST BECOMES OBVIOUS ON THAT ONE. THE IGNITION IS SUBJECT TO THE SAME PROBLEMS. MY VEHICLE STOPPED WORKING AFTER LEAVING THE SUNROOF OPEN MISTAKENLY. THE VEHICLE WOULDN'T START FOR 24 HRS, AND THE TURN SIGNAL HAS SINCE HAD PROBLEMS WITH FLASHING TOO QUICKLY. THE DESIGN OBVIOUSLY LACKS BASIC ATTEMPTS TO KEEP WATER AWAY FROM ITS ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS. I HAVE A RECURRING PROBLEM WITH A SERVICE STABILITRAK LIGHT INTERMITTENTLY GOING ON AND OFF. IT WAS TAKEN BACK FOR SERVICE SEVERAL TIMES, BUT THE PROBLEM WAS EITHER NEVER RESOLVED, OR CONTINUES TO RECUR. I DON''T KNOW WHETHER STABILITRAK IS OR WAS FUNCTIONING AT ANY POINT, OR IF IT'S JUST THE LIGHT. AROUND THE SAME TIME, THE CRUISE CONTROL STARTED TO ONLY WORK INTERMITTENTLY AND THEN COMPLETELY STOPPED WORKING. IN ADDITION, THERE IS SOMETHING VERY WRONG WITH THE ABS SYSTEM WHEN ATTEMPTING TO STOP WHILE TRAVELING AT LOW SPEEDS. ALTHOUGH IT HAPPENS CONSISTENTLY, I WOULD HAVE DIED OR BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED IF I HADN'T DOWNSHIFTED AND PULLED MY E-BRAKE IN ORDER TO FINALLY GET THE VEHICLE TO STOP. YET, THE 9-7X WASN'T INCLUDED IN THE RECALL GM ISSUED FOR THE VERY SAME PROBLEM ON OTHER VEHICLES. THERE IS SERIOUSLY SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS VEHICLE. IT IS A DEATH TRAP WAITING TO HAPPEN. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-10-19
- VIN: 5S3ET13S482
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I WAS TRYING TO SHUT DOWN MY CAR AND EVEN THOUGH MY CAR WAS IN PARK, I COULDN'T GET MY KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION. WHEN I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO, AFTER A FEW TIMES, THE BATTERY LIGHT STAYED ON. IT TOOK MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS UNTIL I COULD FINALLY SHUT OFF MY CAR WITH THE CAR BATTERY NOT BEING DRAINED. ADDITIONALLY, AND I DON'T KNOW WHEN THIS STARTED, BOTH OF THE BACK DOORS NO LONGER WILL OPEN FROM THE INSIDE AND THE SUV BACK WON'T OPEN FROM THE OUTSIDE. THE AC BLOWERS WILL BLOW COLD INTERMITTENTLY. THERE IS PLENTY OF COOLANT. NO DEALER WILL LOOK AT IT BECAUSE THERE ARE NO SAAB DEALERS. *TR
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-05-01
- Components: STEERING

AFTER DOING A SEARCH I FOUND NUMEROUS POSTS ABOUT THIS SAME ISSUE ON THE TRAILBLAZER, ENVOY AND SAAB. POOR DESIGN AND LACK OF QUALITY CAUSED THE FAILURE. *TR
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-02-18
- VIN: 5S3ET13M482
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: WAS DRIVING DOWN SIDE STREET, REACHED FOR SOMETHING IN PASSENGER SEAT, DREW MY HAND BACK MAKING VERY GENTLE CONTACT WITH IGNITION KEY IN CENTER CONSOLE AND CAR SHUT OFF. I HARDLY TOUCHED THE KEY. THIS SECOND TIME IN EARLY JUNE, THOUGH I HIT IT WITH MY CUP (ICE TEA FROM MCDONALDS). THEN THIS WEEKEND IT HAPPENED AGAIN. IT IS VERY EASY TO BUMP IT WITH YOUR ARM AND HAVE IT SHUT OFF. I CALLED GMC AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THEY WOULDN'T FIX IT, EVEN THOUGH TO ME IT SEEMS LIKE THE SAME ISSUE AS WITH THEIR OTHER CARS THAT ARE BEING RECALLED FOR THE SAME REASON. I THINK IT SHOULD BE RECALLED, AND SUSPECT THAT THE IGNITION IS THE SAME THAT IS IN THE GMC ENVOY, TRAILBLAZER, ETC. ALSO, THE 2007 WAS RECALLED, AND I THINK THE 2008 SHOULD BE AS WELL. MY CAR IS AVAILABLE FOR SOMEONE TO INSPECT IT ANYTIME IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE HOW EASY IT IS FOR IT TO HAPPEN. *TR

2008 Saab 9-7x recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2008 Saab 9-7x.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix, 2006-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2007 Buick Rainier, Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT, GMC Envoy XL, 2006-2008 Isuzu Ascender, and Saab 9-7x vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the headlamp driver module (HDM) may overheat and fail, causing the headlamps and daytime running lights to not illuminate.
- Consequence: Headlamps that do not illuminate reduce the driver's ability to see the roadway and reduce the vehicle's visibility to oncoming vehicles, both of which increase the risk of a vehicle crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the HDM, free of charge. The recall began on May 17, 2016. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300 or Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737. GM's number for this recall is 14291.

You've got yourself a great vehicle here! It's got a much better fit and finish than its siblings, and the engine is plenty powerful. The handling is good, and the ride is very smooth.
-
This is our second Saab and it has proven to be just as enjoyable as the 9-3 it's parked next to. It's an excellent combination of luxury, fun, and capability. The V8 engine makes cruising in the mountains a breeze and it can tow up to 6500 lbs. Plus, it comes with a lot of great features as standard, such as OnStar, XM radio, leather seats, high-intensity headlamps, Bose sound, sun roof, heated seats, rear climate control, and dual-zone climate control. And don't worry about maintenance - you get free 1 yr. OnStar and free 36 mo. scheduled maintenance, as well as a 100,000 mile power train warranty. Don't pay attention to the 'expert' reviewers - some of them haven't even driven it. You really have to drive it to appreciate that it's performance-tuned by Saab and has more luxury than its GM cousins.
-
Hey there! Have you heard about the latest version of GM's TrailBlazer? It's the most expensive one yet!
-
I'm over 6 ft tall and this car fits my style perfectly. The head room and leg room are great. I had considered the Mercedes SUV, but I'm glad I changed my mind and thought about the Saab ingenuity. I love the way it drives and handles. It's a statement SUV despite the connection with GM.
-
Awesome SUV! If you're looking for a real SUV like I was, for towing or just for the space, you can't beat the 9-7x. The standard features are amazing and blow away the competition. The handling is great too. This is not just another exercise in badge engineering, like Lexus is to Toyota or Honda to Acura, etc. You really need to drive it and see the standard features for yourself. It's at least 15k cheaper than the competition when similarly equipped. I was able to lease it for just 0.9% here in Canada, which was a great deal.

My overall impression is that Saab tried to make a small/mid sized SUV feel like a car. I hope the remaining days of my 27 month lease go by quickly.
Clifton Rolfson 2024-09-26
We bought this vehicle used in 2011 with around 35000 miles on it. Over the years, we've had a few issues with it, such as the transmission going out in less than two years, the fuel sensor breaking (which we fixed under the recall), and the oil pressure sensor breaking (which we fixed ourselves). We also had to replace the LED brake light in the back for $150, and the cup holder that pops out near the radio broke. Unfortunately, it was poorly designed and can only hold a small can of soda or a small fountain drink, causing spills on the floor. The check tire pressure and service tire monitor lights come on occasionally, even when there's nothing wrong with the tires. Additionally, the traction control sometimes takes effect in the middle of summer. We did have some issues with the power seats, but we found that hitting the front of the seat hard would make it work again. The cup holders in the front and back were also poorly designed, making it difficult to hold larger drinks. The jack is located underneath the middle seats, which can be inconvenient if you have a car seat back there. Overall, we've had some minor issues with the car, but we still enjoy driving it.The vehicle has some great features such as a powerful engine, memory seats, a spacious cargo area, a built-in air compressor, and great towing capacity. Although we are switching to a van, we still have this vehicle. However, we have noticed some issues with the transmission and feel that it may need to be repaired soon.

It's really frustrating when you can't find spare keys, isn't it?

You won't come across many SAAB 9-7X on the road, which can be viewed positively or negatively depending on your perspective. Unfortunately, my vehicle has been in the shop twice in the past two weeks. However, I'm taking a wait-and-see approach. I wonder what the next issue will be that brings me back to the shop.

I took a look at the GMC Envoy Denali and SLT with the 4.2 engine. I noticed a significant difference between the Denali and the SLT with the 4.2 engine. The Saab 9-7x, on the other hand, offers a comfortable and smooth ride that falls right in between the Envoy Denali and SLT. The 9-7x provides a more luxurious experience than the Envoy SLT, and its lower profile and larger wheels make a noticeable difference in ride and handling. Unless you plan on going off-road, I would highly recommend choosing the 9-7x over its GM counterparts. It's important to note that the quality and fit and finish are still GM, so it's not quite on par with a Lexus.
