2009 Saab 9-7x problems

saab logo

The Saab 9-7X is a mid-size luxury SUV that was built by General Motors for the American market and sold under the Saab marque. The 9-7X was first revealed at the 2004 New York International Auto Show, and was available starting in the model year of 2005, as a replacement for the Oldsmobile Bravada.

Information and vehicle details

The Saab 9-7X was introduced in 2004 for the 2005 model year and was made by General Motors, and the 9-7X was also built on the GMT360 platform, which is the same platform that the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy, Isuzu Ascender, Oldsmobile Bravada, and Buick Rainier were all built on. The 9-7X was Saab's first-ever SUV.

The Saab 9-7X was originally available in two trim levels for 2005: the Linear and the Arc. The Saab 9-7X did not offer a turbocharged engine, quite unusual for a Saab vehicle. All Saab 9-7X vehicles come with all wheel drive (2005 was the first year all wheel drive was offered by Saab), eighteen inch sport wheels, and sport tuned suspension as standard equipment. The 9-7X was built at GM's Moraine, Ohio assembly plant. The Saab 9-7X is classified as a midsize luxury SUV.

When the 2005 Saab 9-7X had been introduced, it had served as the replacement for the Oldsmobile Bravada (which was discontinued as a direct result of the Oldsmobile brand being discontinued in 2004), along with the Buick Rainier. Most of the exterior styling on the Saab 9-7X and on the Buick Rainier was a direct transfer from the discontinued Bravada, except for a front fascia designed to resemble other Saab vehicles.

From 2005 to 2009, the Saab 9-7X was the second most expensive luxury SUV made by General Motors, the most expensive being the Cadillac Escalade. GM had marketed the Saab 9-7X as a direct competitor to more upmarket luxury SUVs, like the Volvo XC90 and the Volkswagen Touareg.

All Saab 9-7X models came standard with side curtain airbags, leather interior, heated front seats, automatic climate control, an AM/FM radio with a CD player and Bose speakers, as well as XM Satellite Radio, and OnStar. HomeLink was standard as well. All Saab 9-7X vehicles came with all-wheel drive as standard equipment. A touchscreen navigation system was available as an optional feature.

For the 2006 model year, the Linear trim level was renamed as the 4.2i, and the Arc trim level was renamed as the 5.3i. The 4.2i trim level comes with the 4.2L inline six engine, and was rated at 285 hp (213 kW) and 276 lb⋅ft (374 N⋅m) of torque. The 5.3L V8 engine was rated at an estimated 300 hp (224 kW) and 330 lb⋅ft (447 N⋅m) of torque.

The Saab 9-7X equipped with the 5.3L V8 engine has the capability to tow up to 6,500 lb (2,948 kg).

For the 2008 model year, the new Aero trim level was added as a more luxurious version of the Chevrolet Trailblazer SS. Both the Saab 9-7X Aero and the Chevrolet Trailblazer SS came with the 6.0L LS2 V8 engine, the same engine used in the 2005 to 2007 model of the Chevrolet Corvette modified for use in GMT360 vehicles. The Saab 9-7X also came with a 4L60E four speed automatic transmission as standard equipment.

Also for the 2008 model year, the Saab 9-7X with the 5.3L V8 engine was available with Displacement on Demand technology to reduce fuel consumption. Saab had made enhancements to the vehicle's GM made chassis. Saab had also added a lower ride height, firmer springs and shock absorbers, larger brakes with steel front calipers, a strengthened frame, steering revisions and a thicker front stabilizer bar.

A self leveling rear air suspension was also added. The 9-7X, along with the other GM midsize SUVs built on GM's GMT360 platform were originally scheduled to be redesigned for the model year of 2007, but instead, GM had decided to continue the production the GMT360 SUVs and to only give them minor updates.

The 9-7X as well as the other GMT360 midsize SUVs made by GM were not scheduled to be redesigned, updated, or to continue production after the 2009 model year, as a result of GM closing their Moraine, Ohio assembly plant, where the GMT360 SUVs were built on December 23, 2008. As a result, the Saab 9-7X was discontinued after the 2009 model year.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-09-16
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 5S3ET13S392
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: MY WIFE AND I WERE ON THE DRIVE THRU LINE AT WENDYS, IT WAS RAINING OUT AND I CRACKED THE FRONT PASSENGER WINDOW FOR A LITLE AIR. A MINUTE LATER WE SMELLED SOMETHING BURNING WE WERENT SURE WHERE THE SMELL WAS COMING FROM UNTIL MY PASSENGER SIDE WINDOW/LOCK/AND HEATED SEAT SWITCH STARTED TO EMIT SMOKE. OF COURSE WE WERE IN A STATE OF PANIC, WE QUICKLY EXITED THE LINE AND PULLED OVER I DIDNT KNOW WHAT TO DO OTHER THAN PULL UP THE SWITCH HOUSING FROM THE DOOR PANEL. AFTER DOING SO THE SMOKE WAS EVIDENT AND THE WIRES AND ACTUAL PLASTIC HOUSING CAUGHT FIRE. I WAS ABLE TO PUT THE FIRE OUT. AFTER INSPECTING THE ENTIRE SWITCH HOUSING IT WAS CLEAR THAT THE WIRES OVERHEATED AND SHORT CIRCUITED I WOULD IMAGINE DUE TO THE LITTLE BIT OF RAIN WATER THAT LEAKED INTO IT. THE MANAGER OF THE WENDYS CAME OUT TO CHECK ON US AS HE SAW AND HEARD OUR PANIC. I CALLED GM/SAAB THIS MORNING AND THE REP MADE ME OUT TO BE A LIAR, SHE COULDNT BELIEVE THAT A FIRE ACTUALLY OCCURED. I TOLD HER I HAVE THE SWITCH HOUSING AND IT IS CLEAR AS DAY THAT THE PLASTIC DIDNT MELT AND THE ACUAL METAL TIP OF THE WIRE MELT DUE TO SMOKE OR JUST A HEAT. I SEE THAT THERE IS A RECALL ON 2008 SAAB 97X DRIVER MODULE BUT NOT MY YEAR OR THE PASSENGER SWITCH. THE REP HAD ME SO UPSET I FORGOT TO GET HER NAME AND FILE A COMPLAINT SO WHEN IM DONE ON THIS POST I AM GOING TO CALL BACK AND HAVE THEM LOOK UP MY FILE AND LODGE A COMPLAINT. ALSO THERE IS A RECALL FOR 2008 97X HEADLIGHT MODULE AND OF COURSE MY HEADLIGHTS JUST STOPPED WORKING OUT OF THE BLUE, I REPLACED THE BULBS FROM AUTOZONE TO NO AVAIL THAT IS HOW I FOUND OUT ABOUT THE SECOND RECALL. IM UPSET BECAUSE I HAVE 3 KIDS IN COLLEGE AND 1 IN 10 GRADE AND AM NOT IN A FINANCIAL POSITION TO REPLACE ANY OF THE DEFECTIVE FACTORY PARTS ESPECIALLY AFTER A FIRE IN MY VEHICLE. NOW I AM FORCED TO NOT HAVE FUNCTIONING PASSENGER WINDOW OR LOCK OR HEATED/MEMORY SEAT.

  • Summary: LOW BEAM HEADLAMPS AND DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPS INTERMITTENTLY FAIL TO ILLUMINATE, BOTH IN AUTO AS WELL AS MANUAL MODE. LIGHTS FAIL TO ILLUMINATE ON START-UP AS WELL AS SHUT OFF UNEXPECTEDLY WHILE DRIVING. THIS IS THE SAME ISSUE STATED IN THE RECALL FOR 2006-2008 SAAB 9-7X, BUT INEXPLICABLY THE 2009 MODEL IS NOT COVERED UNDER THIS RECALL. THIS VEHICLE MALFUNCTION IS HAZARDOUS AND POSES A THREAT TO THE SAFETY OF OTHERS ON THE ROAD. THE DRIVER'S VIEW OF THE ROAD IS COMPLETELY AND UNEXPECTEDLY IMPAIRED WHEN THE LIGHTS SHUT OFF WHILE IN MOTION AS WELL AS LOWERED VISIBILITY OF THE VEHICLE TO OTHERS ON THE ROAD.

Negative 2009 Saab 9-7x car reviews

  1. Donato Denesik 2024-11-13

I took a look at the GMC Envoy Denali and SLT with the 4.2 engine. I noticed a significant difference between the Denali and the SLT with the 4.2 engine. The Saab 9-7x, on the other hand, falls right in between in terms of comfort and ride. With the 9-7x, you get a lot more luxury than with the Envoy SLT. The 9-7x's ride and handling, thanks to its lower profile and larger wheels, makes a dramatic difference. Unless you're planning to go off-road, I would recommend choosing the 9-7x over its GM siblings. However, it's worth noting that the quality and fit and finish are still GM, so it's not quite on par with a Lexus.

  2. Niko Boyer 2024-08-21

I had purchased this car used, with approximately 10K left on the warranty. Unfortunately, at 80K miles, several issues arose, including problems with the catalytic converter, power window motors, anti-lock brake control, and others. Despite my previous positive experiences with (original) Saabs, the final straw was an engine (5.3L V-8) valve failure that cost over 2K to repair. However, I was able to trade it for a 2008 (yes, older) Lexus RX330, which has been running smoothly even at 180K miles.

  3. Dereck Sanford 2024-08-16

We bought this vehicle used in 2011 with around 35000 miles on it. Over the years, we've had a few issues with it, such as the transmission going out in less than two years, the fuel sensor breaking (which we fixed under the recall), and the oil pressure sensor breaking (which we fixed ourselves). We also had to replace the LED brake light in the back for $150, and the cup holder that pops out near the radio broke. Unfortunately, it was poorly designed and can only hold a small can of soda or a small fountain drink, causing spills on the floor. The check tire pressure and service tire monitor lights come on occasionally, even when there's nothing wrong with the tires. Additionally, the traction control sometimes takes effect in the middle of summer. We did have some issues with the power seats, but we found that hitting the front of the seat hard would make it work again. The cup holders in the front and back were also poorly designed, making it difficult to hold larger drinks. The jack is located underneath the middle seats, which can be inconvenient if you have a car seat back there. Overall, we've had some challenges with this vehicle, but we've managed to work around them. The vehicle has some great features such as a powerful engine, memory seats, a spacious cargo area, a built-in air compressor, and great towing capacity. Although we are switching to a van, we still have this vehicle. However, we have noticed some issues with the transmission and feel that it may need to be repaired soon.

It's really frustrating when you can't find spare keys, isn't it?

  5. Dennis Reinger 2024-07-17

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that while the rocket is definitely a powerful machine, it seems to require a fair amount of maintenance. It's been in for repairs quite a bit lately, but I'm sure we can get it back up and running smoothly in no time!

Positive 2009 Saab 9-7x car reviews

  1. Javon Zboncak 2024-11-18

This is a lovely SUV. It looks great and handles like a car.

  2. Cicero Wisoky 2024-09-17

Home run, it's a great SUV! The interior is very quiet and the Bose system is excellent. The ride is smooth and the vehicle hugs the road/curves with stability and comfort. I love the styling - understated but elegant! The seats are very comfortable and I really enjoy driving this vehicle.

  3. Mohammad Bauch 2024-08-17

I bought this car almost a year ago used at a great deal. I love it! It has all the luxury one could want, including heated seats, navigation, DVD, sunroof, and more. It handles nicely and, so far, with 41,000 miles, I have had no issues at all.

  4. Eleazar Stokes 2024-07-26

You've got yourself a great vehicle here! It's got a much better fit and finish than its siblings, and the engine is plenty powerful. The handling is good, and the ride is very smooth.

  5. Benedict Bahringer 2024-07-22

This is a beast in a tux, punch the right pedal and hold on. We needed a larger vehicle and wanted something that looked good, but we also demanded performance. This vehicle corners, accelerates, and stops better than most sedans. It's a great addition to our 9-2X. However, if you're looking for good fuel economy, this SUV may not be the best choice for you. We can't wait for another Michigan winter to see how well it performs in the snow!
