2001 Dodge Intrepid problems

dodge logo

The Dodge Intrepid is a full-sized front-wheel drive four-door sedan that was produced by Dodge for the 1993 to 2004 model years. It is related to the Chrysler 300M, Chrysler Concorde, Chrysler LHS, Chrysler New Yorker, and Eagle Vision which were all built on Chrysler's new "cab forward" LH platform.

The Intrepid was sold in Canada as the Chrysler Intrepid. In the United States, it replaced the Dodge Monaco as Dodge's largest passenger car. With Dodge's introduction to Mexico during that time, it was badged as a Dodge, replacing the Dynasty which had been sold there under the Chrysler brand.

Background

The Intrepid's design goes back to 1986, when designer Kevin Verduyn completed the initial exterior design of a new aerodynamic concept sedan called Navajo. The design never passed the clay model stage. It was also at this time that the Chrysler Corporation purchased bankrupt Italian sports car manufacturer Lamborghini. The Navajo's exterior design was reworked and became the Lamborghini Portofino, released as a concept at the 1987 Frankfurt Auto Show. The Portofino was heralded as a design triumph, setting in motion Chrysler's decision to produce a production sedan with the Portofino's revolutionary exterior design, called "cab forward". The cab forward design was characterized by the long, low slung windshield, and relatively short overhangs. The wheels were effectively pushed to the corners of the car, creating a much larger passenger cabin than the contemporaries of the time.

Design of the chassis began in the late 1980s, after Chrysler had bought American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1987. During this time, Chrysler began designing the replacement for the then-new Dodge Dynasty, which was a mid-size car. Initial proposals bore resemblance to the Dynasty, but this design approach was scrapped entirely in 1988 by François Castaing, the former AMC Vice President of product engineering and development. As AMC was purchased by Chrysler, Castaing became new Vice President for Vehicle Engineering for the new company. The acquiring automaker was in desperate need of replicating the AMC and Renault corporate culture where work was conducted in an atmosphere "of constant change". Castaing organized Chrysler's departments into AMC-style cross-function teams, as well as incorporated the use of simultaneous engineering. Moreover, the new vehicle's design, under Castaing's leadership, began with the Eagle Premier platform.

The Premier's longitudinal engine mounting layout was inherited, as was the front suspension geometry, and parts of the braking system. The chassis itself became a flexible architecture capable of supporting front or rear-wheel drive (designated "LH" and "LX" respectively). The chassis design was continually refined throughout the following years, as it underpinned more Chrysler prototypes: the 1989 Chrysler Millennium and 1990 Eagle Optima. The transmission was inspired by the Premier's Audi and ZF automatics. Borrowing heavily from Chrysler's A604 (41TE) "Ultradrive" transversely mounted automatic, it became the A606 (also known as 42LE).The initial standard 3.3 L pushrod V6 engine was joined in 1990 with a 3.5 L SOHC engine with four valves per cylinder. For the second generation Intrepid R/T the block was recast in aluminum as part of a comprehensive upgrade.

  • Summary: 2001 DODGE INTREPID R/T 3.5L WITH 111,422 MILES. WHILE DRIVING ON THE TOLLWAY, THE HEATER BEGAN TO BLOW OUT COOL AIR. LATER THERE WAS NO ACCELERATION AND THE CAR JUST DIED. GOT THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHILE IN TRAFFIC. HAD TO BE TOWED. ENGINE IS LOCKED UP. NEW ENGINE ESTIMATE $5000-$7500. NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS OR WARNINGS. PRIOR TO THIS EVENT WE HAD A NEW RADIATOR, THERMOSTAT, ETC. PUT IN ALONG WITH FIXING OIL LEAKAGE PROBLEM. THAT WAS JULY 28, 2011 WITH 107,809 MILES ON IT. WE ALWAYS CHANGED OUR OIL REGULARLY AND TOOK CARE OF IT. WE BOUGHT THIS 2001 R/T INTREPID NEW. THE ONLY OTHER REAL PROBLEM WAS @ 106,939 MILES IT WOULDN'T GO BACK INTO DRIVE ONCE YOU PUT IT IN REVERSE SO WE PUT IN A USED CONTROL MODULE TO FIX THAT PROBLEM. I HAVE READ ABOUT A LOT OF COMPLAINTS WITH THE 2.7L ENGINE BUT CAN'T FIND MUCH INFORMATION ON THE 3.5 R/T MODEL. SO SCARY TO THINK HOW MANY 2001 INTREPIDS ARE JUST DYING ON THE ROAD WITH NO ADVANCE NOTICE. VERY DANGEROUS. I AM SO GLAD THAT MY SON WAS DRIVING IT AND KNEW WHAT TO DO INSTEAD OF MY NEWLY-LICENSED DAUGHTER. IT WAS HER CAR FOR ONLY 4 1/2 MONTHS. DODGE SHOULD BE ASHAMED. WE GOT MORE MILEAGE OUT OF A CHEVY CAVALIER. ARE THERE ANY CLASS ACTION LAW SUITS OUT THERE? *KB

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-02-20
  • Number Of Injuries: 2
  • VIN: 2B3HD46R01H
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: MY CAR HAS VERY LOW MILEAGE AND IT JUST SUDDENLY STARTED COUGHING AND CHOKING AND REVVING UP AND SLOWING DOWN - IT WAS COMPLETELY OUT-OF-CONTROL! I HAD TO PULL OVER ON A MAJOR FREEWAY (INTERSTATE 5 IN OREGON) AND WAITED ON THE SIDE FOR A TOW. WHEN I GOT IT HOME I WAS TOLD TO DRIVE IT A COUPLE OF BLOCKS TO GET THE ENGINE ANALYZER ON IT, BUT IT SOUNDED HORRIBLE, THE VALVES WERE KNOCKING FIERCELY AND IT SOUNDED LIKE IT WAS OUT OF OIL, WHICH I CHECK FREQUENTLY. THE GUY THAT CHECKED IT REALLY DIDN'T HAVE MUCH OF AN ANSWER EXCEPT A RELAY SWITCH. WE REPLACED IT BUT TO NO AVAIL. I TOOK IT TO A LOCAL MECHANIC AND HE WANTED ABOUT $4500 TO REPLACE THE ENGINE - WHERE THEY FOUND METAL SHAVINGS AND SOME SORT OF BOLT THAT THEY COULDN'T GET TO DOWN IN THE VALVE. I CANNOT AFFORD TO REPLACE ANYTHING ON THIS CAR AND I AM AMAZED AND DISGUSTED THAT CHRYSLER WOULD PUT THIS KIND OF ENGINE OUT TO THE PUBLIC. I HAVE READ HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS NOW ABOUT THE 2.7 L ENGINE - WITH PEOPLE IN THE SAME PREDICAMENT. AND IT'S NOT JUST ONLINE - I HAVE A NEIGHBOR WITH ONE THAT HAS THE ALTERNATIVE ENGINE AND HE'S HEARD THE SAME THING. HIS CAR RUNS GREAT BECAUSE HE DOESN'T HAVE THE 2.7L....CHRYSLER SHOULD PICK UP THE PIECES FOR ALL THESE POOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE FAULTY CARS AND AT LEAST REPLACE THE VALUE OF THEIR CAR AS IT STANDS TODAY. PLEASE HELP. *TR

The engine had a tapping noise and unfortunately, it couldn't be repaired. However, I had it rebuilt by a third-party company. Although Dodge has not acknowledged the poor design of the engine, I can confidently say that my 2001 Intrepid has been a reliable car so far. While my 94 Intrepid had a better suspension and overall performance, I did experience transmission issues with it. If Dodge were to use a 3.3L or even a 3.0L engine in their cars, I would definitely consider buying from them again. However, I do not plan on purchasing a car with a 2.7L engine in the future.

The car has some great features such as cruise control, power windows, power seats, and an electric trunk lid. However, I have had some issues with the engine. I had to install a new timing chain tensioner at a little over 80,000 miles and now at a little over 100,000 miles it seems like it needs another one installed. This is definitely not normal. I have been using Sea Foam which seems to be taking care of the problem pretty well, but I have to add more Sea Foam every time I change the oil. Eventually, this will not work anymore.

Although we have owned this car since 2002, it has unfortunately been plagued with a number of issues. The brakes have been problematic from the start, and we have had to replace the engine at 60k miles. Additionally, the air conditioning has gone out multiple times, the oil light flickers, and we have had to replace a window motor. Currently, the heater box needs to be replaced. While these issues have been frustrating, we are confident that we have made the right decision to move on from this car. Thank you for your understanding.

Started out as a great car with 24k. However, I have had some issues with the rack and pinion, sway bar links, and struts. Additionally, I have noticed excessive tire wear on the front passenger side. The dealership quoted me $1200 for the rack replacement. Overall, I have had a less than satisfactory experience with this car. As someone who comes from a Dodge family, I believe that Chrysler could benefit from some improvements in their engineering department before I consider purchasing another vehicle from them.

I purchased this car from a dealer in November 2001 when it had 24,000 miles on it. Since then, I have driven it for over 135,000 miles, primarily on the freeway during my daily 60-mile commute. Despite the high mileage, I consistently get 23-25 MPG, which is great. As someone who is 6'6

Hey there! Unfortunately, my car broke down in the middle of the highway and wouldn't turn on again. I had to call a tow truck, which cost me $80, to take it to the mechanic for a check-up, which cost me an additional $60. The mechanic informed me that the oil pump had gone bad and it had caused significant damage to the motor. He gave me two options: a used motor for $1500 or a new one for $3000. He also mentioned that these cars are difficult to sell, but I'm planning to get rid of it as soon as I can afford to. Thanks for listening!

My wife and I have been extremely happy with our Intrepid for the past 15 months. We purchased a used car with 12,000 miles from Thrifty's rental fleet, and it now has 36,000 miles on the odometer. We have only had to pay for fuel and oil changes, which is fantastic. Although the base 2.7L engine may lack low-end torque, it is easily forgotten as the RPM's climb. The fuel economy is excellent for a vehicle of this size, with fuel mileage in excess of 30MPG for highway driving and an average of 18-20MPG city and highway. It handles and looks great. When it comes time to replace this car, I will not hesitate to purchase another Intrepid.

Excellent handling, roadability, and driveability. The looks were one of the primary reasons for our purchase of this vehicle. However, once we drove it, we were sold on it. We got the best deal we could find and signed on the dotted line. We're so glad we did!

Your R/T drives very well when there are no problems. However, you have experienced some issues such as a buzz noise in one of the mufflers, a squeaking passenger side door, a replaced power brake booster, and noisy windows when rolling them up or down. If the dealer can address these issues, your car would be perfect.
