Buick Century is the model name that was used by Buick for a line of upscale full-size cars from 1936 to 1942 and 1954 to 1958, as well as from 1973 to 2005 for mid-size cars.

The first Buick Century debuted as the Series 60 then renamed in 1936 as a shorter and lighter model featuring the same engine as the bigger Roadmaster and Limited series giving it more performance while using the shorter wheelbase body of the Buick Special. During the 1930s and 1940s it was Buick's companion to the top level Roadmaster and was offered as a 2-door and 4-door sedan and convertible. The Century name was used on six generations of cars of varying sizes as well as performance and trim levels. In 1969, Buick developed a concept car known as the Century Cruiser. In the 1970s, the Century Regal became a separate model and market positioning between the two products changed from year to year depending on sales. The Century was updated to front wheel drive in 1982 and was Buick's 2-door coupe, 4-door sedan and station wagon, with regular updates and feature upgrades as customer preferences changed over time.

Series 60 (1930–1935)

Originally, the Series 60 had the 331.4 cu in (5.4 L) OHV Buick Straight-6 engine from the Series 70, developing 99 bhp (74 kW) at 2,800 rpm. It had, at the beginning of the generation, a full-length running board denoting the top model for Buick at the time, shared with the short wheelbase, entry level Series 40. In 1930, GM built 38,180 cars. The bodystyles available were torpedo, sedan, coupe, and roadster convertible, using GM's "B-body" platform. Starting with this generation, all GM cars shared a corporate appearance as a result of the "Art and Colour Section" headed by Harley J. Earl and modest yearly changes were introduced to freshen the appearance.

In 1931, the running board was reduced and the OHV 220.7 cu in (3.6 L) Buick Straight-8 engine was introduced that developed 90 bhp (67 kW). Aesthetically, the Series 60 remained almost unchanged, and the same fact occurred also in the following year. In 1931 and 1932, a total of 55,135 were produced.

In 1933, the length of the body increased and the radiator was now concealed behind a façade with a grille. The engine power increased to 97 hp (72 kW), and 1933 was the first year all GM vehicles were installed with optional vent windows which were initially called “No Draft Individually Controlled Ventilation” later renamed "Ventiplanes". In 1934, the appearance was changed to a more rounded appearance, with a new OHV 278 cu in (4.6 L) eight-cylinder engine and 100 hp. In 1935, the model remained almost unchanged while the body style selections were similar to larger Buicks but more affordably priced. Six choices were available to include both 2- and 4-door convertibles using the term "phaeton" for the 4-door convertible with a listed price of US$1,675 ($37,224 in 2023 dollars ). Total production from 1933 to 1935 was 31,385. In 1936, the model changed its name to "Century".

The universal pressure regulators (UPR) were produced without an O’ring and retainer, which could lead to fuel leaks and potential fire hazards.

  • Summary: Right front Cooper GS5 Grand Touring 205/70 R15 96T with only 862 miles on it had a complete air loss/went completely flat when car was turning into a parking lot. This is one of a set of brand new tires on the car. The car was never driven on a highway after these were purchased. Only local driving at 45 to 50 MPH max. Tire was taken to a tire shop in hopes of getting it plugged/repaired. They found nothing had penetrated the tire. They could not pressurize the tire. Air was blowing out all around the outside bead and could not be seated. They put lubricant around the bead inside and out and gave it some rapid shots of air on the machine. It started to hold pressure but immediately had a roughly 4 inch section of the sidewall start to balloon out. Technician said he was afraid it was going to blow up in his face. He chalk marked the defective area on the tire and said the bead and sidewall had failed in that ballooning area and the tire was defective and not repairable.

THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE AND VIN WERE UNAVAILABLE.

THEY INSISTED THEY COULD NOT BECAUSE OF MANUFACTURER & HIGHWAY SAFETY LAWS, BUT SAID I COULD CONTACT THE MFG. BUT THAT IT REQUIRED MUCH PAPERWORK & AN EXTENSIVELY SATISFACTORY REASON FOR THIS TO BE DONE, SO I QUIT ASKING. ONCE AGAIN I HAVE DECIDED TO TRY TO GET THE DRL ON MY CAR TURNED OFF, SINCE IT SEEMS TO CAUSE SO MUCH CONFUSION TO ON COMING TRAFFIC WHEN I AM SIGNALING TO CHANGE LANE OR TURN. I CONTACTED BUICK & GOT CUSTOMER SUPPORT REP, THAT HAD NO IDEA WHAT DRL EVEN IS, & DECLINED TO ESCALATE MY CASE UP. AT BEST SHE TOLD ME TO GO TO A DEALER. SO THE DEALER TELLS ME TO GO THE THE MFG. A POTENTIAL MATERIAL OR DESIGN DEFECT COULD RESULT IN THE STEERING KNUCKLE BREAKING IN THE HUB AREA.

    Avoid purchasing a Buick Century. This vehicle has had several major problems, including rust and paint damage to the rocker panel and near wheel wells, which I believe is due to a design flaw. The battery had to be replaced at approximately 25K miles, and the head gasket had to be replaced at 56K miles, costing $1300. Currently, the air conditioning is not working. Overall, this vehicle has been a poor value. Consider other options when looking for a new car.

    There are no words to describe this car, haha! Well, it's not really funny, but you know what I mean. It seems like every other month it's breaking down. I used to have a Ford that lasted me much longer than this GM. They really should be ashamed for making this car. I can see why they don't make them anymore. My advice? Don't buy it.

    During our two week stay in Colorado, our family of four rented a Buick. Although the 12-year-old constantly complained about the lack of room compared to Dad's Passat, overall the engine and transmission were well optimized. However, the car felt light on power. As for handling and comfort, it's a Buick, but unfortunately, the seats were exceptionally poor, and I still have a lingering backache from the lack of support. I have driven Fords and Chryslers and believe that the General really has the domestic competitors beat. However, I would suggest benchmarking German cars before I consider buying one.

I'm happy to report that the suspension is still super smooth and I haven't had any issues with the engine or transmission.     I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it with 11K miles and have driven it up to nearly 30K miles now. The best part is that I haven't had to do any maintenance except for regular oil changes. It's super economical, averaging 26+ mpg (30 on all highway driving). While it's not a sports car in terms of handling, it's still very comfortable and a little luxurious. Overall, I would definitely recommend it to any family looking for good, reliable transportation that's also comfortable.

    Although I was initially impressed with this car, my opinion has changed over time. While the small, economical engine still performs well, the noise can be quite irritating at times. Not only is the sound of the accelerating engine bothersome, but the whine of the drivetrain when slowing down can also be a nuisance. Additionally, the ride is smooth on well-maintained main roads, but can become choppy, bouncy, and ungainly on secondary roads. The suspension also bottoms out with alarming thuds on potholes, which is concerning. Unfortunately, the A/C vents don't adjust upward enough to remove a layer of hot air at forehead level, which is a bit uncomfortable. Despite these issues, I still appreciate the car's good performance.
