2002 Subaru Forester problems

The Subaru Forester (Japanese: スバル・フォレスター, Hepburn: Subaru Foresutā) is a compact crossover SUV that has been manufactured by Subaru since 1997. The first generation was built on the platform of the Impreza in the style of a taller station wagon, a style that continued to the second generation, while the third-generation model onwards moved towards a crossover SUV design. A performance model was available for the second-generation Forester in Japan as the Forester STi.

First generation (SF; 1997)

The Forester was introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show in November 1995 as the Streega concept, and available for sale in February 1997 in Japan, and to the US market in 1997 for MY1998. The Forester was one of the first crossover SUVs; the idea was inspired by Volkswagen (VW). It was built in the style of a station wagon, but had a taller stance, higher h-point seating, and an all-wheel drive drivetrain. Subaru advertising employed the slogan "SUV tough, Car Easy". It used the Impreza platform but with the larger 2.5-liter DOHC EJ25D four-cylinder boxer engine from the Subaru Outback, making 123 kW (165 hp; 167 PS) at 5,600 rpm and 220 N⋅m (162 lb⋅ft) of torque at 4,000 rpm.

Japan

In its domestic market, the Forester replaced the Impreza Gravel Express, known in the US as the Subaru Outback Sport. However, the Outback Sport remained in production for the U.S. market. The Forester appeared after the introduction of the Nissan Rasheen in Japan with a similar appearance, and the Forester's Japanese competitors include the Toyota RAV4, Mitsubishi RVR, and the Suzuki Grand Vitara. Because of the Forester's low center of gravity, it meets the United States federal safety standards for passenger vehicles and does not require a "risk of rollover" warning label on the driver's visor. Size- and price-wise, it fits between the shared Impreza platform and the larger Legacy.

The automatic transmissions used on AWD-equipped vehicles will normally send 60% of the engine's torque to the front wheels and 40% to the rear wheels, using a computer-controlled, continuously variable, multi-plate transfer clutch. When the transmission detects a speed difference between the front and rear axle sets, the transmission progressively sends power to the rear wheels. Under slip conditions, it can achieve an equal split in front and rear axle speeds.

When accelerating or driving uphill, the vehicle's weight shifts rearward, reducing front-wheel traction, causing the transmission to automatically send torque to the rear wheels to compensate. When braking or driving downhill, the vehicle's weight shifts towards the front, reducing rear-wheel traction. The transmission again compensates by sending torque to the front wheels for better steering control and braking performance. If the automatic is placed in reverse or first gear, the transmission divides the torque 50/50 to both front and rear wheels. The manual transmission cars are set up with a near 50/50 torque split as a base setting, and it varies from there. Essentially, manual cars are set up with more bias towards the rear than automatic cars.

MY CAR SURGED FORWARD WITH THE ENGINE RACING AND HIT THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. I COULD NOT CONTROL THE SPEED WITH THE BRAKES, SO I SHIFTED BACK INTO PARK. THIS STOPPED MY CAR. THERE IS DAMAGE TO MY FRONT GRILL AND HOOD. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME I HAD THIS HAPPEN. THE FIRST TIME THIS OCCURRED, I CALLED SUBARU HEADQUARTERS AND EXPLAINED THE ISSUES TO A SUBARU REPRESENTATIVE. I WAS TOLD THIS WAS A NEW ISSUE AND NO RECALL WAS BEING CONSIDERED. I TOOK MY CAR INTO THE SUBARU DEALER AND THEY CHECKED IT AND SAID THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY PROBLEMS. THE SAME THING OCCURRED AT LEAST TWO MORE TIMES PRIOR TO AUGUST 10, 2015. I NEVER HAD ANY DAMAGE TO MY SUBARU OR ANY OTHER VEHICLE BECAUSE I WAS NOT NEAR ANY OTHER VEHICLE WHEN THIS SURGING OCCURRED AND I COULD GET CONTROL OF MY SUBARU BY PUTTING THE AUTOMATIC GEAR SHIFT INTO PARK. • VIN: JF1SF65662H
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: 2002 SUBARU FORESTER. FOR THE PAST FEW WINTERS I HAVE NOTICED A VERY STRONG RAW GAS SMALL INSIDE THE CAR WHEN THE CAR IS IDLED, OR SITTING STILL AND THE TEMPERATURE IS 20 DEGREES F OR LOWER. OBVIOUSLY SOMETHING CONTRACTS BELOW THAT TEMPERATURE AND BY DOING A GOOGLE SEARCH I AM APPARENTLY NOT THE ONLY ONE EXPERIENCING THIS ISSUE. THE SMELL IS SO STRONG IT WILL GIVE YOU A HEADACHE. SO I JUST DON'T DRIVE THE CAR IF THE TEMPS ARE GOING TO BE BELOW 20F. *TR

STEERING,SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-09-20
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JF1SF63542G
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: AFTER PURCHASING A 2002 SUBARU FORESTER, THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN FOR A VERY SHORT PERIOD OF TIME PRIOR TO NOTICING THAT THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO FEEL LOOSE AND UNSTABLE WHILE STEERING, AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO PULL TO ONE SIDE WHILE ACCELERATING AND BRAKING. AFTER NOTICING THE INSTABILITY AND SWAYING ACTION, I CONDUCTED CURSORY INSPECTIONS OF THE FRONT END AND SUSPENSION AREAS OF THE VEHICLE. AS A RESULT OF INSPECTIONS, I DIDN'T NOTICE ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE UNDERCARRIAGE. WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE ON 20 SEPTEMBER 2014, WITHOUT WARNING, THE RIGHT FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM BROKE. IT COULD BE OBSERVED THAT THERE WAS A FAILURE IN THE WELD BETWEEN THE HANGER BRACKET AND THE MAIN PORTION OF THE CONTROL ARM. AFTER THE CONTROL ARM BROKE, IT CAUSED THE CONTROL ARM TO MOVE TOWARDS THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE; IT CAUSED THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE TO SLAM ABRUPTLY INTO THE REAR PORTION OF THE TIRE WELL; IT THEN CAUSED THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE TO LOCK UP, WHICH SUBSEQUENTLY CAUSED THE TIRE TO IMMEDIATELY BEGIN TO SKID. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS WHICH MINIMIZED RESULTS: VEHICLE WAS ONLY TRAVELING AT ABOUT 45 MPH; IT OCCURRED ON SECONDARY ROAD; ROAD WAS STRAIGHT AND LEVEL; THERE WAS NO ONCOMING TRAFFIC; AND ROAD SURFACE WAS DRY. THERE WAS ADDITIONAL VEHICLE DAMAGE. UPON CHECKING THE RECALLS FOR THE 2002 SUBARU FORESTER, I DISCOVERED THAT THE 2003-2008 FORESTERS WERE RECALLED FOR THIS EXACT REASON (RECALL ID # 70673.) THERE WERE OTHER ADDITIONAL RECALLS AS WELL FOR SIMILAR ISSUE. AFTER CONTACTING SUBARU CUSTOMER SERVICE, I WAS ADVISED THAT THEY WOULD NOT COVER THE FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM UNDER THE RECALL EVEN THOUGH THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE RECALL WERE THE SAME. I BELIEVE THAT THE FAILURE OF THE CONTROL ARM IS VERY OBVIOUS AND IT SHOULD BE COVERED SIMILAR TO THE OTHER RECALLED YEARS. I WOULD BE HAPPY TO PROVIDE PICTURES OF THE FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM FAILURE. THANK YOU. *TR

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-02-25
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: BRAKE PADS ARE GOOD AND MOST OF THE TIME WORK RIGHT. WHEN ROAD IS ICY OR WET AND I PUSH THE PEDAL THE CAR STARTS SHUTTERING, BRAKE LETS LOOSE AND WON'T STOP THE CAR. I TRY TO LET OFF THE PEDAL AND BARELY PUSH IT AGAIN AND IT STILL WON'T QUIT SHUTTERING OR STOP. IF I GO TO LOW GEAR REAL FAST OR PULL THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TWO CLICKS THEN I CAN STOP. HAS THIS EVER BEEN A RECALL ON THIS AUTO? *TR

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-02-06
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: ON A VERY COLD MORNING WITH TEMPS IN THE TEENS, AFTER DRIVING THE CAR LESS THAN 10 MILES AND PARKING IT IN THE DRIVEWAY I NOTICED A STRONG RAW GAS SMELL. I OPENED THE HOOD AND SAW GAS LEAKING AROUND TWO METAL CLAMPS ON A SMALL RUBBER HOSE TO THE LEFT AND BELOW THE POWER STEERING FLUID CAP. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ONLINE AND SEEING HOW COMMON THIS PROBLEM IS, WE WENT OUT ABOUT AN HOUR LATER AND TURNED ON THE ENGINE WITH THE HOOD UP AND WE COULD SEE THE GAS AROUND THE CLAMPS AFTER JUST A COUPLE OF MINUTES. WE TIGHTENED THE SCREWS ON THE CLAMPS, THEY WENT AT LEAST THREE TURNS EACH. HOPING THIS SOLVES THE PROBLEM SINCE LEAKING GASOLINE IN THE ENGINE AREA SEEMS PRETTY DANGEROUS. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-01-14
  • VIN: JF1SF63532H
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: IN VERY COLD CONDITIONS. WHEN THE CAR IS IN IDOL OR RUNNING IT HAS A VERY STRONG GAS SMELL AROUND THE ENGINE AND IN THE CABIN AREA. I HAVE HEARD THE WRX AND OUTBACK MODELS HAVE ALSO HAVE THIS PROBLEM.I WAS TOLD IT IS THE FUEL LINE HOSE THE CONNECTS TO THE CLAMP AND CONTRACTS IN SEVERE COLD AND EXTRACTS WHEN IT GETS WARM THEN SEALS ITS SELF TO THE CLAMP. I THINK THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE WITH SUBARU AND IT SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED AND POSSIBLE RECALL ON THE OLDER MODELS IF IT HAS BEEN CORRECTED WITH NEWER MODELS. *TR

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-10-22
  • VIN: JF1SG65673G
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: I RECENTLY PURCHASED A NEW SET OF 4 COOPER CS4 (P215/60R16) TIRES FOR MY 2002 SUBARU FORESTER, HAVING THEM INSTALLED BY A DEALER, ALONG WITH BALANCING AND ALIGNMENT. ABOUT A WEEK LATER I CROSSED THE COUNTRY FROM WISCONSIN TO CALIFORNIA. ON GROOVED CONCRETE INTERSTATE HIGHWAYS, THE TIRES MADE MY CAR "SWIM" FROM SIDE TO SIDE ERRATICALLY. I HAD TO CONSTANTLY BE VIGILANT TO KEEP THE CAR GOING STRAIGHT, AND THIS PROBLEM WAS EXACERBATED WHEN NEAR LARGE TRUCKS. I ASSUME THIS IS DUE TO THE TREAD DESIGN, SINCE I'VE HAD TWO PREVIOUS SETS OF TIRES AND NEVER EXPERIENCED THIS DIFFICULTY. ARE TIRE MANUFACTURERS CHECKING THEIR DESIGNS ON GROOVED CONCRETE, WHICH IS BECOMING MORE AND MORE PREVALENT ON INTERSTATE HIGHWAYS? IS THE GOVERNMENT CHECKING THIS ISSUE AND WORKING WITH MANUFACTURERS TO ASSURE DRIVER SAFETY?? I NOW HAVE TO LIVE WITH THIS ISSUE FOR THE LIFE OF MY TIRES, WHICH IS MOST UNFORTUNATE, AND VERY DISCONCERTING. *TR

Negative 2002 Subaru Forester car reviews

  1. Green Hauck 2024-10-27

Our Forester performed exceptionally for 100,000 miles, demonstrating its reliability and durability. However, as it approached the 100,000-mile mark, we encountered some issues, including minor inconveniences such as the clock stopping, the compass becoming inaccurate, and the low fuel light failing to turn on. Additionally, we experienced some major problems with the front wheels, and the paint job appeared to be prone to scratches. Despite these challenges, we remain confident in the overall quality of the Forester and its ability to provide a reliable driving experience.

  2. Bernard Wisoky 2024-09-21

The Forester's size was just right for me. I heard only good reports from all the Forester owners I questioned before buying. My Forester S Premium was bought as a winter driver, dog car and to transport horse equipment to the stable. With the huge open sunroof, I don't miss my summer sports car! It has been everything I hoped for, and then some! It is comfortable and safe in the winter and on trips. It is the perfect ski car, and tows my Sunfish to the lakes in the summer. The sound system is icing on the cake.

We were initially happy when we purchased the car. However, after driving it for about 5k miles, we noticed a problem with surging. Unfortunately, at 10K, there was a recall on the parking rod. Later, at 16K, we were involved in an accident due to the surging problem, which caused damage to both the front and back of our vehicle. We expressed our concerns to Subaru, but unfortunately, they did not acknowledge the problem. We also found out that NHTSA had received similar complaints. As a result, we no longer feel safe driving the car and cannot recommend it. We hope that Subaru of America will take our concerns seriously and address the issue for the safety of their customers.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share some feedback on my experience with the car. I think it would be great if there were improvements made to the comfort and road noise. Additionally, I had some trouble with the brakes and cup holders, and unfortunately, my cup holder broke within a year. Lastly, I found that the dark/light gray seats tend to absorb a lot of sun. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this car.

The 2002 Forester we have was bought used with 6000 miles on it. It has been a great second car for us and has served its purpose very well. We have always made sure to service it on time, but unfortunately, the engine developed an oil leak at 60,000 miles which would cost around $5000 to repair. At this point, it's not worth getting it fixed, so we have decided to trade it in. The gas mileage was around 18 miles per gallon.

I bought my first Subaru on May 5th, 2001. Since then, I've driven over 176,000 miles without any problems. It still has the original clutch and I only had to replace the brakes for the first time about a year ago. I average about 28 miles per gallon mixed and 31 on the highway, thanks to the five-speed manual transmission. The only maintenance I've done is change the oil regularly and replace the water pump and timing belt at 120k miles. This car just keeps going and going, even with all the snow, rain, and hot summers it's seen while driving around Denver and frequenting the slopes in the winter and working in Blackhawk.

We chose this car because we were looking for a small SUV and didn't find anything we liked from other car makers. We went for the S premium package, which came with many extras! We also added a few things to make it sportier, such as fender flares and a rear spoiler. Overall, it's a great car, but it can be a tight squeeze in both the front and back when you have infant and car seats. Despite this, we love the extras, like the heated side mirrors and auto-dimming mirror. However, the cupholders could be improved. The sound system is awesome and it performs great in snow and mud, which is a plus in Minnesota!

I bought the Subaru because I wanted a reliable car that could handle getting through the streets during heavy winter snows, and sitting in daily gridlocked traffic for hours on end. So far this car has been up to the task, and is fun to drive as well!

The Forrester with leather is definitely the way to go if you're looking for more room when travelling with kids. While the seats could be more comfortable, there are plenty of cubby holes to store your belongings. However, the tilt steering could use some improvement.

My Forester has proven to be a great automobile, even after being hit from behind twice. Both times, my rear bumpers had to be replaced, but my car sustained no other damage. Meanwhile, the cars that hit me had to be towed.
