Ram 2500 problems

The Ram pickup (marketed as the Dodge Ram until 2010) is a full-size pickup truck manufactured by Stellantis North America (formerly Chrysler Group LLC and FCA US LLC) and marketed from 2010 onwards under the Ram Trucks brand. The current fifth-generation Ram debuted at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, in January of that year.
Previously, Ram was part of the Dodge line of light trucks. The name Ram was first used in 1981 model year Dodge Trucks in October 1980, following the retiring and rebadging of the Dodge D series pickup trucks as well as B-series vans, though the company had used a ram's-head hood ornament on some trucks as early as 1933.
Ram trucks have been named Motor Trend magazine's Truck of the Year eight times; the second-generation Ram won the award in 1994, the third-generation Ram heavy-duty won the award in 2003, the fourth-generation Ram Heavy Duty won in 2010 and the fourth-generation Ram 1500 won in 2013 and 2014, and the current fifth-generation Ram pickup became the first truck in history to win the award three times, winning in 2019, 2020, and 2021.

Common Ram 2500 problems
The Ram 2500, a popular heavy-duty pickup truck, has faced several common problems based on complaints from its owners. These problems span various components of the vehicle, from exhaust and brakes to electrical systems and interior features.
One of the most frequently reported issues involves the exhaust system, specifically muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, and leaks. This can lead to both performance and safety concerns, as well as potential environmental impact from leaks.
Another common problem area is the brakes, with owners reporting premature pad/rotor wear, pulsation or vibration, antilock system issues, parking brake problems, master cylinder, caliper, squeaking, brake failure, and regenerative braking concerns. These issues can significantly affect the vehicle's safety and require immediate attention.
The electrical system has also been a source of frustration for Ram 2500 owners. Problems include sensors, emission-control devices, fuel-injection system, fuel gauge/sender, fuel pump, and difficulties filling up the tank. These issues can impact the vehicle's performance, fuel efficiency, and overall drivability.
Interior features, such as windows, locks, latches, doors, tailgate, trunk or hatch, mirrors, seat controls, seat belts, sunroof, convertible top, and glass defects, have also been problematic. These issues can negatively impact the vehicle's comfort and convenience, as well as potentially compromise safety.
The transmission is another area where Ram 2500 owners have reported problems. Issues include gear selector and linkage, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission, and leaks. These problems can significantly impact the vehicle's performance and drivability, requiring immediate attention.
Finally, paint and body issues, such as fading, chalking, peeling, or cracking, loose interior or exterior trim or moldings, and rust, have been reported by Ram 2500 owners. These issues can affect the vehicle's appearance and potentially lead to more significant problems if not addressed.
In summary, the Ram 2500 has faced a variety of common problems, including exhaust, brake, electrical, interior, transmission, and paint issues. These problems can significantly impact the vehicle's performance, safety, and overall satisfaction for its owners.

- Summary: The ABS dash light and traction control light started coming on about a year ago. the light is intermittent with a ding sound. Some days it comes on non stop, sometimes it doesn’t come on at all. cruise control does not work, and “park rear” button is not able to get out of the off mode.

- Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
- VIN: 3C6UR5GL3JG
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Intermittent Electronic Brake System and ABS Failure messages. Been dealing with this issue for over a year now. Dealership told me I had to wait almost a year before there would be a fix and that’s if I’m lucky. The ABS pump motor and the software are both faulty and Ram is aware of how to fix it, and haven’t. There needs to be a recall for issue, ASAP.

Ram 2500 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-26
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
- VIN: 3C6UR5GL8KG
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: On June 26, 2024 during a long road trip, the vehicle lost power repeatedly in the middle of an area with no road service. It put my safety and that of my passenger at risk on the highway as losing power suddenly causes danger in fast-moving traffic causing the risk of potential collisions with other vehicles. There was no warning lamp indicating the failure would occur. To this date, the dealer has not fixed the issue. After approximately three weeks, I picked up the vehicle after it as allegedly repaired (at that time the dealer stated it was an electrical issue). The vehicle failed again not more than one-half mile from the Omak Dodge service center placing my safety at risk yet again. I managed to get the vehicle back to the service center at which time, the dealer stated after consultation with RAM technical support, that the issue was a failure in the fuel system. The dealer claims that the problem was the failure of a fuel injector/pump that caused particulate matter to contaminate the entire fuel system. Being that it was allegedly a power train failure, it was to have been covered under the power train warranty. After approximately three months of delay, the dealer stated the truck was repaired. On arriving at the dealer to pick up the truck, the dealer stated it wasn't repaired and had an exhaust issue. The truck remains at the dealer to this date, October 25, 2024. The dealer states that the exhaust issue is yet another issue with the truck that is covered under a warranty voluntarily extended to 10 years by RAM.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-26
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
- VIN: 3C6TR5EJ5JG
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: ABS module failure, only 63000 km had to pay $1038.19 to have it replaced at Parksville Dodge Jeep and 194.14 to read the code that we already had done at another auto shop. I have a case number [XXX]. I have sent many screen shots of other owners having problems, websites, recalls , 22v140000, 24v4150000. The ABS sensor came on our extended warranty ended in November 2023, we took it to a mechanic shop and the code C0020-01 came up (no parts only Chrysler can replace hmm that’s a problem why?)we then phoned Chrysler in Parksville and took it in and they showed same code and said needed to order part only one was in Red Deer Alberta. This is obviously an issue with this truck as there is a class action suit alleging FCA breached its warranty by using ABS and HCU modules of subpar quality known to be unfit for ordinary purpose and not disclosing this issue to customers at the time of purchase. These modules are prone to premature failure due to defective materials used in their manufacture. The lawsuit states FCA knew about the defect thru extensive pre-sale testing and numerous NHTSA complaints, there is a Technical Service Bulletin regarding the faulty ABS and HCU, despite issuing the TSB, FCA failed to issue a recall. The hearing is scheduled for December 17, 2024. We would like all costs associated with the replacement of this module paid for by Chrysler Canada. I want a recall issued for my vehicle and a cheque to reimburse me as this is clearly an issue. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-21
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-21
- VIN: 3C6UR5CL8JG
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I'm getting warning lights to service abs system and traction control, also cruise control and 4 wheel wheel drive will not engage. Dealer replaced abs control module while truck was under warranty and now at 58000 miles I'm having the same problem as I did when it was fixed earlier. This is a safety Hazzard and a recall needs to be done because theses vehicles were built for towing heavy loads and you loose your abs and traction control when trying to stop heavy loads.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-08
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-21
- VIN: 3C6UR5CL1JG
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: As I am driving, (2018 ram 2500 6.7l with 45000 miles) the “service electronic brake system” and “service automatic brake system” will flash on and off intermittently. I took it to the dealership and they stated possibly the HCU. But since the codes flash intermittently and at completely random times they couldn’t say fer sure. But it does have to do with HCU system. I did a quick google search and discovered this is a recurring issue with the 2017-2018 Ram models.
Ram 2500 2014
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-20
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-21
- VIN: 3C6UR5FL6EG
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Negligent service. How could be possible to measure assembly threads without a torque wrench? I regret bringing the vehicle for the recall. Passed two weeks, and the RamCare and dealer did not contact to fix. It's dubious if all performed recall V06 was executed correctly at the dealer. Owners and dealer may think that the recall will not bring any risk for the owner. See attached pictures and the procedure.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-19
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-19
- VIN: 3C6UR5FL3JG
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Driving on interstate highway with cruise control engaged. Experienced rapid deceleration as cruise control disengaged without driver input. Received anti-lock braking error / service electronic braking system error. Was very dangerous situation to have occur unexpectedly and could have easily resulted in rear end collision or loss of control of vehicle. Received no warning prior to this failure. Issue has been sporadic but occurring more frequently. Vehicle has less effective braking in adverse road conditions. Never know when the anti lock brake system will be functional. A bump or vibration in the road can cause it to engage or disengage. Ram dealer service dept indicates Hydraulic Control Unit needs to be replaced. Looking online, I see this is an exceptionally common occurence in same year/make vehicles. So much so that the replacement part is backordered for months.

- Summary: While driving the PU with my camper in tow, the ABS and Service electronic bakes system warning were displayed on my dash. Then they went out. This process repeated several times over the next 3-4 minutes. Then the warning lights came on and stayed on. It remained that way until I parked on the side of the road and turned off the vehicle. I checked the undercarriage for any signs of any visible damage to the braking system. None was readily identifiable. Upon restarting the vehicle, all warning lights were extinguished. I proceeded to the campgrounds with out further warnings on this system. The next day, with out the camper in tow, the warning lights were again active flashing on and off for a period of about 3-4 minutes before they again came on and stayed on. This process repeated itself as I would turn off the vehicle and then restart it. Upon parking for the evening they were still on. When I started again the next day, they were off.

- Summary: It's clear that my abs module is bad but it consists of three components. Mopar online doesn't have any components available to fix the problem. And the Dealer is selling the components separately and telling you which one they will sell you first and also at a higher price than what's available to you online

- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-13
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-16
- VIN: 3C6UR5DL4JG
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: There seems to be an issue with my ABS and Electronic Braking System, because both lights are blinking on and off saying to service them. It started while I was driving down a gravel road, then will shut off and back on. I drove nearly 500 miles with the ABS and Electronic Braking System sending me this message off and on again. I noticed when it was on that my ABS was not working properly, but when the light was off it was. I tested it several times to verify that it worked when the lights was off and that it didn't when the lights were on.

- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: Uconnect screen not working properly due to delamination. When driving the screen will ghost click creating a beeping sound with every ghost click. This could be several hundred peeps per minute. The back up camera will come on while driving forward. In bad weather when you want the defrosters on it will not allow it or stay on defrost. It will switch to all different vent positions, change the air temps so you can't get your window clear. If you try and change it, it will immediately change it. I was pulling a 5th wheel through the mountains and it started to pour rain. I desperately needed defrost and it would not work properly for this reason. If you turn off the screen it will turn right back on. If you turn the volume down to zero you still hear beeping. This is very distracting as a driver. I can't even turn the radio or system off. The radio constantly is changing station and switching from FM to AM or Siri. You can't do anything to stop this ghost clicking.

Vehicle year: 2017
I was searching for a new vehicle to accommodate my furry friend and reduce the number of repairs I had to do. Unfortunately, I had a frustrating experience with the local Ford dealers, so I decided to explore other options. After speaking with some neighbors and co-workers who had switched from Ford to Ram, I was impressed with the reliability and value of the Ram. I had an incredibly pleasant buying experience and was able to find exactly what I wanted without having to pay for extra features. I purchased a '16 2500 Heavy Duty crew cab short bed 4x4 with the 6.4L gasser & 4.10 gears in the Tradesman trim level (not a Power Wagon). It's optioned almost to the SLT level with the chrome appearance package, preferred equipment package, UConnect 5.0, 4.10 gears, anti-spin differential, shift-on-the-fly 4x4, park sense/park view, power trailer tow mirrors, and LED bed lights. The ride is nice, albeit a bit stiff, but that's mainly due to running 80 psi in the tires. I'm amazed at how quiet the cabin is. Although it's a base model, there are plenty of hard plastics in the cabin, but so far (fingers crossed), no squeaks or rattles, and it seems well put-together. I wish it had a telescoping steering wheel, and the brake pedal sits a bit high for my foot, but I'll get used to it. The seats seem quite comfortable, even the back seats. The cylinder deactivation is imperceptible, though at low speed/rpm, it will chug a little, on occasion. The shift points (of the transmission) seem a bit off, even with the 4.10s, but all work smoothly. It just seems like it's easy to catch the transmission off-guard pretty regularly, which is a common occurrence in newer cars/trucks with 6-10 cogs in the trans, as it's tuned for mileage. I'm getting around 11-13 mpg in town & 17-18 mpg on the highway, which is great. I'm still in the break-in phase, so no towing yet. Overall, I'm a happy camper!

Vehicle year: 2020
We finally found the perfect 2019 Certified Ram 2500 4X4 Big Horn Crew Cab 6.4 Hemi with the 8 foot bed from a Missouri Ram Dealer. It only had 780 miles on it and was priced at $46K, a great deal compared to the sticker price of $59.9K when it was new with all the preferred options. We preferred the gas model over the 6.7 Cummins as we don't plan on towing anything over 12,000 pounds and wanted the cargo bed capacity it provides. The gas model also costs $10K less initially and doesn't require the $400 Oil Change / Oil Filter / Water Filters at the 15K mile maintenance, plus the huge parts / labor costs when the warranty expires. We drive 10K or less miles per year and haven't towed our 30 foot / 7500 pound Travel Trailer yet, but we're anticipating a much better experience than our previous 2019 Ram 1500 with the 3.92 rear end and 1380 pound cargo bed capacity. The ride unloaded is a bit stiffer than the Ram 1500, but we've been getting 16 to 17 MPG on the highway at 65 MPH (13 to 14 MPG in the city) with 2000 miles on the odometer. The MPG is affected by headwind, but overall, we're very pleased with the truck and anticipate many years of worry-free operation, especially with the 7 Year (100K Mile) Ram Certified Powertrain Warranty from the new WSD and additional 3 months of bumper to bumper warranty to the original 36 month new vehicle warranty. It's been a year since we purchased it in February 2021 and accumulated 14,000 miles. We pulled an 8000 pound Travel Trailer to Key West last October (4200 miles round trip) and averaged 9 MPG.When it comes to fuel efficiency, our RAM 2500 has been averaging around 7 MPG at 65 MPH on toll-free highways. However, during winter temperatures, we have been able to achieve an average of 15 MPG in a combination of highway and city driving. Last summer, we took an unloaded 1200 mile trip on I-70 and achieved our best MPG of 18.7, verified by actual fill up versus miles travelled. Since fuel costs have recently skyrocketed, we have been driving our 2016 Honda CRV exclusively, which gets an impressive 30 MPG. Although we have recently moved up considerably in RV size to a 38 foot / 11,500 pound travel trailer, pulling it with our Ram 2500 has been no issue at all. We are planning a long trip to Yellowstone late summer 2023 with this new RV and will report on the trip next March 2024. We have had no mechanical issues (other than 1 recall) at 20,450 total miles accumulated. Looking at replacement Goodyear Wrangler Workhorse HT, Continental Terrain Contact HT or Michelin LTX Defender tires all with We travelled 2,350 miles round trip, maintaining a speed of 65 MPH and achieving 4 MPG. Our Ram 2500 6.4 Hemi handled the elevation changes satisfactorily, with only one minor mechanical issue. While crossing the continental divide in Wyoming at 9,400 feet, the 'Check Engine' Icon Light illuminated. However, the light went out after an overnight stay in western Nebraska a few days later and stayed out for the remainder of the trip. We contacted our Ram Dealer about the issue and were informed that there is a noted problem with the mass airflow sensor at higher altitudes. We were advised to ignore it as there will be a software update when the next scheduled engine software review is issued. Despite the minor issue, our truck's engine operation and fuel mileage remained unchanged while the Check Engine Light was on. Overall, we are still very happy with our Ram truck after nearly two years of operation and 26,500 miles accumulated. While the 900+ foot pounds of torque in a 6.7 Cummins diesel would have been beneficial in the mountains, we believe that the additional purchase expense, maintenance, and fuel cost would not have been worth it for a one-time seven-day trip.

This is an unsold 2017 model. It's a great deal and an excellent trade-in. I haven't been able to drive it much due to illness, but I really like it.

If you're in need of a reliable and sturdy truck, the Ram 2500 is definitely worth considering. As a tradesman myself, I understand the frustration of the high price tag, but unfortunately, it's often a necessary investment.

Looking to purchase a 1-year-old RAM 2500 SLT with the 6.7 diesel engine? There's a ton of inventory out there, but don't worry, I've got you covered. After months of searching, researching, and dealing with multiple dealers, I found a 2013 RAM 2500 Tradesman with the 6.7 diesel and only 18,000 miles. Even though it's a 4-year-old truck, the interior features are still top-notch. The dealership that had it was ready to sell it, and I was able to purchase it for $35,500.00. If you're looking to save some money, you may want to consider the Tradesman model instead of the SLT. I've had it for a short time, but I already like it more than my 2008 Ford F250 Diesel. Happy shopping!

I purchased the long horn 2500 with the diesel engine package and unfortunately, I have experienced a few issues. Firstly, the buckles on the back of the front seat pockets fell off. Secondly, there is an ongoing audio thumping due to the ANC system (active noise cancelation). Thirdly, the tint on the front driver and passenger windows came with bubbles in it. Fourthly, there is a silver wheel well screw that is not painted like the rest on both passenger and driver side. Lastly, I have noticed that the Uconnect system has a few bugs and requires frequent resetting by holding down the volume and the tune button for 20 seconds for a forced reboot.

This truck has noticeable orange peel coming out of the factory. It's disappointing to see this on an 88k dollar truck, but I'm confident that Mopar will address the issue. Despite this, I'm still happy with my purchase and excited to take it on the road.

I ordered my truck in mid-February 2022, but it didn't arrive at the dealership until late July. On the day I picked it up, the odometer already had 42 miles on it. After completing all the paperwork and getting ready to leave the dealership, I discovered that the front parking sensors weren't working. Ten days and 300 miles of driving later, I noticed oil spots all over my driveway. When I looked underneath the truck, I could see oil dripping from different areas, but I couldn't tell where the leak(s) came from. I took the truck back on 8/2/22 and was told that there were three different leaks: transmission, DEF line, and shocks. It's been two weeks since I dropped off the truck, and it is still sitting in the Service department waiting for parts and repairs to be done. I'm completely frustrated and dissatisfied with the quality control and workmanship aspects of this truck manufacturer. I'm hoping they can find a way to provide some kind of remedy for the troubles that I'm going through.

I purchased my 2021 Ram 2500 6.7 brand new from the dealership and initially, it was a great experience. The power and towing capability were unmatched and I was thrilled. However, at 24,000 miles, the transmission broke and I was without a vehicle for about 4 weeks while Ram fixed the issue under warranty. While the dealer replaced the transmission at no cost, I did experience some rough shifting afterwards. Unfortunately, at 60,000 miles, the engine developed a ticking sound and at 75,000 miles, the EGR went out. At 83,000 miles, the cooler lines to the transmission popped loose all on their own. The dealer attempted to blame the cooler lines on a mechanic that worked on the exhaust, though they couldn’t tell me exactly how they were damaged in any way. After speaking with several diesel transmission shops, I learned that this is a common defect in Rams. Cooler lines are quick connect fittings, and, with vibrations from the engine, break over time and simply pop out. Since these troubles, I have researched 5th generation rams and found they are fraught with numerous different mechanical issues.

I recently purchased a brand new 2020 Ram with the 6.7 diesel engine. The truck ran smoothly for the first 9,000 miles, but then I noticed a noise in the drivetrain when transitioning from drive to coast. I took the truck to the dealership, but unfortunately, they were unable to find anything wrong. As time went on, the noise became more persistent, and I returned to the dealership. This time, they agreed that there was a problem. They tried replacing the transfer case and re-flashing the computer, but neither of these solutions worked. Currently, the transmission is out of the truck, and it has been down for 40 days. Unfortunately, there is no estimated time for when it will be fixed. I reached out to Ram customer care, but unfortunately, they were not able to provide any immediate assistance. They have informed me that it may take 6-8 weeks before they can do anything about it. Despite this frustrating experience, I remain hopeful that the issue will be resolved soon. While I have had some issues with this particular vehicle, I have been a loyal Chrysler customer for some time. I am confident that this experience will not deter me from continuing to purchase their products in the future.
