The Ram pickup (marketed as the Dodge Ram until 2010) is a full-size pickup truck manufactured by Stellantis North America (formerly Chrysler Group LLC and FCA US LLC) and marketed from 2010 onwards under the Ram Trucks brand. The current fifth-generation Ram debuted at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, in January of that year.

Previously, Ram was part of the Dodge line of light trucks. The name Ram was first used in 1981 model year Dodge Trucks in October 1980, following the retiring and rebadging of the Dodge D series pickup trucks as well as B-series vans, though the company had used a ram's-head hood ornament on some trucks as early as 1933.

Ram trucks have been named Motor Trend magazine's Truck of the Year eight times; the second-generation Ram won the award in 1994, the third-generation Ram heavy-duty won the award in 2003, the fourth-generation Ram Heavy Duty won in 2010 and the fourth-generation Ram 1500 won in 2013 and 2014, and the current fifth-generation Ram pickup became the first truck in history to win the award three times, winning in 2019, 2020, and 2021.

Common 2023 Ram 2500 problems

The 2023 Ram 2500, a popular heavy-duty pickup truck, is known for its power, style, and cutting-edge safety features. However, like any vehicle, it may experience certain problems that owners should be aware of. Here are some of the most common issues reported by Ram 2500 owners, based on search results and consumer complaints:

  • Engine Problems: Ram trucks have been plagued by engine problems, ranging from moderate to extremely serious. Many of the Ram truck problems involve exhaust manifold failures, compression issues, leaks, stalls, cylinder head malfunctions, and more. If you notice any unusual sounds, smells, or performance issues with your engine, it's essential to have it inspected and repaired as soon as possible.
  • Transmission Issues: Transmission issues are very common in Ram trucks, resulting in problems shifting, jerky movements, slow acceleration, late shifts, clunking sounds, and loud whines or howling. These issues can significantly impact the performance and safety of your vehicle, so it's crucial to address them promptly.
  • Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) Defects: Problems with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) have been a common thread across Chrysler vehicles, including Ram trucks. The TIPM is the power distribution center of a vehicle, and when it's defective, it can impact several other critical systems. Some of the most common Ram truck problems with the TIPM include stalling, power window failure, fuel pump issues, doors locking/unlocking randomly, cooling fan failure, and more.
  • Faulty Batteries: Car batteries should ideally last three to four years. However, owners of Ram trucks have reported experiencing issues with their batteries, including premature failure and other problems. It's essential to ensure that your battery is in good working condition and replaced if necessary to avoid potential safety issues and inconvenience.
  • Transmission Defects: In some cases, Ram 2500 and 3500 models have been recalled due to transmission defects that could lead to a vehicle fire. If you own a Ram 2500 or 3500 model from 2020 to 2023, it's essential to check if your vehicle is affected by this recall and have it inspected and repaired as soon as possible to avoid potential safety risks.
  • Lifter Problems: Some owners of 2023 Ram 2500 models have reported lifter problems, which can affect the performance and longevity of the engine. It's essential to have any lifter issues inspected and repaired as soon as possible to avoid potential engine damage and safety risks.

While the 2023 Ram 2500 is a powerful and capable vehicle, it's essential for owners to be aware of these common issues and take proactive steps to address them promptly. Regular maintenance, inspections, and repairs can help ensure that your Ram 2500 remains safe, reliable, and in good working condition for years to come.

Negative 2023 Ram 2500 car reviews

  1. Casper Wuckert 2024-11-20

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with this vehicle. Although it's great to drive for hours, I've had some trouble with the Malfunction Indicator/Check Engine Light. Apparently, it's related to the emissions system and unfortunately, the manufacturer doesn't have a solution for it yet.

  3. Jayde Reynolds 2024-09-14

I have experienced three recalls on my Ram. Currently, I have been waiting for over three months for repairs, and it appears that it will take at least three more months. These are hazardous recalls, with owners being advised not to park in a garage due to the risk of fire. It is evident that this is a significant issue with the manufacturer, rather than a problem with the dealer.

  4. Daron Gulgowski 2024-08-12

I recently purchased a RAM 2500 Limited. While there are some aspects of the truck that I am not entirely satisfied with, such as the rough ride due to the RAM Air suspension and the hard seats, I have also encountered some issues with the back up sensors not detecting the receiver hitch. Additionally, the truck's design makes it difficult to fit a larger tool box. Overall, I have had some challenges with this truck, but I am hopeful that these issues can be resolved.

  5. Hiram Hoppe 2024-03-13

We have owned the vehicle for a month and a half. Unfortunately, we experienced issues with it from the very first day, as it required a jump start. Despite having the recall updates installed, the vehicle has continued to display system warnings and has failed to start on five separate occasions. As a result, it has required frequent visits to the repair shop. We are disappointed with the performance of the vehicle and concerned that it may not meet our expectations.

Positive 2023 Ram 2500 car reviews

  1. Robin Schmidt 2024-11-05

It simply works! It's so reliable and comfortable, and the Hemi takes care of all my towing needs. The only downside is that being a 2500 Mega Cab, sometimes parking in tight spots can be a bit of a challenge, but I knew this before making the purchase. In my first year of ownership, I've driven about 30,000 miles. This has definitely been one of my best vehicle purchases!

  2. Houston Tillman 2024-10-15

I recently replaced my years-old Toyota Tundra with a Ram, and so far, I'm pleased with my purchase. Although the Ram is larger than the half-ton Tundra and rides rougher, it has many more bells and whistles. I haven't had the chance to tow anything yet, but the tow mirrors are great, and the Ram's 5th wheel prep makes it very convenient for a goose neck hitch. The trailer tire pressure readout is also a fantastic safety feature. Unfortunately, the only option available was the Mega Cab, when I would have preferred the Crew Cab and 8' bed. The power (6.4 gas) is decent, although the lighter Tundra was quicker despite having a smaller motor. However, the ergonomics and comfort are excellent. The truck comes with an Off-Road package, which is why it's so tall, but it can be a bit of a nuisance to get in and out, even with side steps.

  3. Roscoe Pagac 2024-09-10

Got my 2500 Laramie less than a year ago. Really love the quality of it and the looks. When I purchased it, it had the best interior out of Ford and Chevy, which was important to me. Bummed out that during the production year I got it, due to the chip shortage they downgraded some packages, although mine has the tow group, it did not come with blind spot monitoring. Which is pretty standard on most trucks now a days. Gas mileage is really low, I knew that going in but I didn’t think it would be so low.. at around 12mpg in city/highway. I do have the 4:10 gears so a factor in this mpg. I love the truck either way, so far so good!

  4. Freddie Brekke 2024-07-14

I really appreciate the way they handled everything from the beginning.

  5. Brycen Wilkinson 2024-07-12

I own an HVAC business. I started with an '04 Chevy 2500, but then traded it for a new 2014 Ram 2500 - the cheapest one with the chrome package. I put that truck through its paces and had to replace the rear u-joint at 70k. I then traded it for a 2019 Ram 2500 - again, the cheapest one with the chrome package. I'm about to hit 50k and haven't had a single issue so far. These trucks are incredibly powerful, capable of reaching 100mph at 2500rpm, and can easily outperform that Chevy while towing a house. The ride is a bit stiff, but that's to be expected from a 2500. It handles like a Corvette. The body is a bit thin, so it can get dinged easily, but my only real complaint is that sometimes I have to slam the door twice to get it to close. My friend's GMC closes with just a light push and click. I don't need 100 buttons or a big screen TV on the dash, so I don't have the petty issues that others might have.
