2017 Ram 2500 problems

The Ram pickup (marketed as the Dodge Ram until 2010) is a full-size pickup truck manufactured by Stellantis North America (formerly Chrysler Group LLC and FCA US LLC) and marketed from 2010 onwards under the Ram Trucks brand. The current fifth-generation Ram debuted at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, in January of that year.
Previously, Ram was part of the Dodge line of light trucks. The name Ram was first used in 1981 model year Dodge Trucks in October 1980, following the retiring and rebadging of the Dodge D series pickup trucks as well as B-series vans, though the company had used a ram's-head hood ornament on some trucks as early as 1933.
Ram trucks have been named Motor Trend magazine's Truck of the Year eight times; the second-generation Ram won the award in 1994, the third-generation Ram heavy-duty won the award in 2003, the fourth-generation Ram Heavy Duty won in 2010 and the fourth-generation Ram 1500 won in 2013 and 2014, and the current fifth-generation Ram pickup became the first truck in history to win the award three times, winning in 2019, 2020, and 2021.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-17
- VIN: 3C6LR5AT6HG
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: In July of 2020 my 2017 RAM 2500 ABS and Service Electronic Brakes warning lights began illuminating intermittently. My vehicle had 12,343 miles on the odometer at the time and was three years old. There was no noticeable change to the brake performance. The vehicle was brought into a RAM dealer for service which found code C0020-01 ABS Pump Motor Control-General Electrical Failure present with Starcase #S2005000004 instructing the replacement of the hydraulic control unit. This corrected the issue until August of 2024 when the above warning lights began illuminating again, intermittently, but in increasing frequency. The issue was diagnosed by a RAM dealer with the same code as above (C0020-1) and the recommendation to again replace the hydraulic control unit. My vehicle had 30,901 miles on the odometer at the time. The total for the service in 2020 was $984.89 and in 2024 $698.46 for the second replacement of a component within 5 years. Understanding that there was no recall ever issued, the ABS and Stability/ Traction control systems are designed to provide safety to vehicle occupants in heavy braking or loss of traction situations. While there was no noticeable difference in brake function, the presumption is that if there are warning lights activated, there is an unknown issue with the brake system which could result in brake failure. Further, the requirement to replace the same part twice in 30,000 miles at a total cost of $1,683.35 does not seem reasonable. Many owners have posted similar issues with this component with no apparent resolution other than to continue to replace the component when it fails. The component can be inspected, however it is currently installed on my vehicle.

Hi there! I recently sold my toy hauler and no longer needed my 2012 F350 with 8' bed. After experiencing some issues with my Ford, I decided to give Ram a chance, and I'm so glad I did! While I do miss the tailgate step, this is my only complaint. The truck is loaded with almost as much technology as my wife's luxury SUV, and it's been a reliable daily driver for me. I haven't had any issues with the mirrors, as long as they're set up correctly. With the 6.7 Cummins 370HP/800 TQ and 3.42 rear axle ratio, I'm able to get an impressive 21 mpg at 70 mph, and my average with all driving is 17.8 mpg. I'm able to tow my #14,000 trailer with ease, and the truck is comfortable enough to use as a daily driver. If you're in the market for a new truck that can handle towing and is comfortable for daily use, I highly recommend test driving a new Ram. By the way, since my initial review, I've added a Bestop Trek Step, which works great for stepping up and down in a high truck!

This truck was amazing! It never gave me any problems, except for having to replace the batteries. I always received compliments on it, and my family was sad to see it go when I traded it in. Although I needed a tax write off this year due to a major expense, I know this truck would have served me for many more years.

Great truck! The ram service is outstanding whenever it's needed.

I had a negative experience with Firestone tires. They wore out quickly, with my back tires reaching the wear bars at only 10,000 miles. Unfortunately, Firestone did not take responsibility for the issue and instead directed me to the dealer. As a result, I had to pay for the expensive replacement tires myself. This was disappointing, as I expected better quality from such a reputable brand.

Hey there! That's an awesome vehicle!

I have a 2017 Ram 2500 Lone Star Edition with a 4x4, 6.4 gas engine, and it has almost 83,000 miles on it. It has been well-maintained by the dealer and has all the factory equipment without any modifications. Although it's not a work truck, it's a great commuter that looks great, tows great, and rides great. I have noticed a few recalls for this model, especially the drag link issues, but I'm glad to know that a spot weld can fix it. The truck was made in Mexico. Recently, I have noticed some issues with the transmission shifting, and occasionally, a warning light comes on, such as the check engine or ABS light, but it usually goes out after a day. My extended warranty will expire next year, so I plan to trade it in then. My previous two trucks were Toyota, and I was able to get 175K-200K trouble-free miles before trading them in. Although I didn't plan on getting a new truck this soon, I have learned from my mistakes and would advise others to stay away from RAM.

I recently purchased a 2016 Ram 2500 diesel, which was my first Ram after owning Ford heavy duty trucks for years. Unfortunately, I have had some issues with the truck. The tires only lasted 22k miles and at 40k miles, I had to replace the rotor, caliper, and pads on the front. Additionally, the cruise control stopped working after 40k miles. While I understand that wear and tear is inevitable, I was disappointed with the quality of the truck given its high price point. When I brought up the issue of the brakes making noise at 30k miles, the service representative told me that it was a common issue with Rams. Despite this, I let it go. Unfortunately, the driver caliper hung up and I had to pay $800 for repairs since I was out of warranty on the brakes. While I am disappointed with my experience, I hope that Ram can improve their product in the future.

My family has owned 7 Dodge diesel trucks so far, but I have decided not to buy another one. I have been driving my 1999 2500 for 16 years and I still prefer it over my 2016 truck, which I would trade in if I wouldn't lose so much money. While my 1999 gets 21 mpg, my 2016 only gets 16 mpg. Additionally, there are no interior lights for the front seat area, which makes it difficult to read a map without pulling over or having the passenger remove their seat belt. The Dumbo mirrors stick out too far for normal use and make it hard to see traffic. The mirror height is too short and it's difficult to change lanes without using the interior mirror. However, I do appreciate the drink holder in the door and the fact that it's wired for easy towing. Overall, I have driven over 6 million miles in my life and I have decided to retrofit an older truck before buying a new one. While the new truck has some good features, it is not safe to drive in traffic, even on freeways.Hey there! Have you considered other options? This truck might not be the best fit for you.

Hi there! I recently went to trade my 2016 Cummins for a 2017, but unfortunately, the dealers only offered me $30k on trade. I was a bit disappointed since I had bought it just 10 months ago for $60k. I'm now considering buying a used one or perhaps trying out another brand. Looking back, I should have kept my Duramax which always out pulled the Ram. Thanks for listening!

Despite the unfortunate situation of my truck being stuck in 4th gear, I confidently refused to pay for the tow and rental car as requested by Chrysler. As a customer who paid a premium price for this truck, I expected better performance and was disappointed. However, I remain confident in my decision to not purchase another truck or car from Dodge in the future.
