2012 Ram 2500 problems
The Ram pickup (marketed as the Dodge Ram until 2010) is a full-size pickup truck manufactured by Stellantis North America (formerly Chrysler Group LLC and FCA US LLC) and marketed from 2010 onwards under the Ram Trucks brand. The current fifth-generation Ram debuted at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, in January of that year.
Previously, Ram was part of the Dodge line of light trucks. The name Ram was first used in 1981 model year Dodge Trucks in October 1980, following the retiring and rebadging of the Dodge D series pickup trucks as well as B-series vans, though the company had used a ram's-head hood ornament on some trucks as early as 1933.
Ram trucks have been named Motor Trend magazine's Truck of the Year eight times; the second-generation Ram won the award in 1994, the third-generation Ram heavy-duty won the award in 2003, the fourth-generation Ram Heavy Duty won in 2010 and the fourth-generation Ram 1500 won in 2013 and 2014, and the current fifth-generation Ram pickup became the first truck in history to win the award three times, winning in 2019, 2020, and 2021.

Common 2012 Ram 2500 problems
The 2012 Dodge Ram 2500 has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. One of the most frequently mentioned issues is related to the transmission, specifically the pressure solenoid in the transmission valve body. This problem can manifest as a delayed or harsh shift, and it is often addressed by replacing the pressure solenoid.
Another issue that has been reported by owners of the 2012 Dodge Ram 2500 is the electronic sway bar disconnect system. This system is designed to improve the truck's off-road capabilities, but it has been found to be prone to failure. When the system fails, it can cause a violent shaking of the front end of the vehicle, known as the "death wobble". This problem is often exacerbated by driving through puddles, which can cause the system to short-circuit.
The TRW crash sensor defect is another issue that has been reported by owners of the 2012 Dodge Ram 2500. This problem is believed to be responsible for as many as eight deaths, and it has sparked an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The problem is caused by an electrical overstress that affects the airbag control units (ACU) in certain Ram trucks.
The uConnect infotainment system in the 2012 Dodge Ram 2500 has also been reported to have issues. The system will often boot into a blank screen, becoming unresponsive to the touch, or reboot at random times. Each time it forces owners to turn off their cars, restart, and hope for a better outcome. This problem has been reported by many owners, and it is a significant source of frustration for those who rely on the uConnect system for navigation, entertainment, and other functions.
The 2012 Dodge Ram 2500 has also been reported to have issues with its steering linkage. The drag link, which connects the right front steering knuckle and the steering gear, has been found to be prone to separation. This problem can cause a complete loss of steering control, which is obviously a major safety concern.
In addition to these specific issues, the 2012 Dodge Ram 2500 has also been reported to have more general problems with its engine, steering, electrical system, interior, and transmission. These problems are often reported by owners who have had their vehicles for several years and have put a significant number of miles on them.
In summary, the 2012 Dodge Ram 2500 has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. These problems include issues with the transmission, electronic sway bar disconnect system, TRW crash sensor, uConnect infotainment system, and steering linkage. The truck has also been reported to have more general problems with its engine, steering, electrical system, interior, and transmission. It is important for owners of the 2012 Dodge Ram 2500 to be aware of these issues and to take appropriate action to address them if they arise.

TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-10
- VIN: 3C6UD5CL2CG
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: I purchased a pair of Treadwright warden tires for the rear of my wife’s truck. In less than 100 miles the tread separated from the casing on one of the tires. I caught it before it completely blew out and have pictures. The replacement they sent has a blown sidewall. I mounted it and a bubble started to form that was 1/2” high and 3” around with just 20psi, operating PSI for the tire is 80PSI. I immediately stopped inflation and contacted Treadwright. They tried to convince me that it was “overlap” and safe to use. I told them it is not over lap and showed them multiple pictures of the tire from different angles to prove it has a blown belt. They still insisted it was a serviceable tire. It’s not and I have pictures. I’ve used Treadwright tires for the last 5 or so years. Over the last year and a half to 2 years I’ve received 6 defective tires. All defects were fatal defects, all being broken belts. That’s 1 out of every 4.5 tires purchased. If I’ve received that many fault tires I can be the only one. On top of that the insistence of Treadwright trying to convince people to use fatally defective tires is negligent, reckless and dangerous.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-27
- VIN: 3C6UD5DLXCG
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: While driving, my dodge shut off and it was hard to control my vehicle and come to a safe stop, out of the way of other motorists. Lost all power, as if I turned the key off while driving. Turns out that there is a weak/loss of connection in the WIN module. while the vehicle is running at idle, the truck will shut off as if I turned the key to the off position. This is dangerous and scary. There was no warning or heads up or any issues prior to this incident.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-15
- VIN: 3C6TD5FT4CG

The contact stated that he had left a voicemail with the manufacturer but had not yet received a callback. The failure mileage was approximately 151,000.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-25
- VIN: 3C6TD5ET6CG
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: When driving at highway speed, if I hit the seam between the road and a bridge and it is not smooth my truck goes into a, "Death wobble." The steering wheel and the whole truck shakes uncontrollably. I can barely keep it in the road. It will only stop when the vehicle slows below 30mph. This problem started about 48,000 miles, I only have a little over 56,000 now. I have changed the stabilizer, got new tires and an alignment. I will be taking it to a mechanic on the 17th but I really believe the manufacture should have a recall on this vehicle. It is very dangerous. I am not the only person to own one of these trucks and this happens to.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-04-01
- VIN: 3C6TD5CT2CG
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The exhaust manifold bolts on both sides of the engine warp due to two different metals being put together under heat. Steel and aluminum expand at different temperatures. This causes the bolts to break off of the exhaust manifold creating an exhaust leak into the engine bay. Yes, this can be inspected upon request. The safety of myself and the general public is at risk due to the exhaust leak into the engine bay being pulled into the cab via the heating or airconditioning system. The exhaust fumes are pulled into the cab of the truck via the heating and airconditioning system. When running, the truck has a very noticeable smell inside the cab. It has caused me headaches as well. This poses a risk to the public if the driver were to pass out from said fumes. The problem can be reproduced and is a known issue with Dodge. It is very well documented online that this problem happens to nearly all Dodge Ram trucks. It has never been recalled because Dodge says its not a "safety" concern. This is very much so a safety issue. The components have been inspected by others, and verified as broken. I will not take it to a dealership to have it inspected as they want to charge 150$/hr to diagnose something that even they recognize as a known issue. There were no warning lamps, messages or any visible indication of this problem. A loud ticking noise and a strong smell of exhaust fumes are what brought the issues to attention.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-26
- VIN: 3C6TD5CT3CG
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My Dodge Ram 2500, 2012 Hemi engine started making a ticking sound so got a tune up. The machinic changed the spark plugs and distributors around after I complained. Nothing he was able to do enable the truck to function properly. I spoke with the Dodge dealership, the spoken informed me that when Dodge merged with MERCEDE the problem persisted and to this date a fix was not provided. I spoke with other Dodge owner who experience the same problem. The engine was not functioning properly because of internal damage. The cost of repair would cost between $8K and $10K to replace or repair the engine. The dealership stated that NHTSA nor Dodge have provided a fix and that the problem still persist to this day.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-05
- VIN: 3C6TD5DT9CG
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Engine has been making a ticking noise on the passenger side for the past few months. The passenger side exhaust manifold warped and broke two bolts in the engine block. This caused an exhaust leak and made the truck run rich due to the leak before oxygen sensor. Fuel efficiency declined. Replaced the exhaust manifold, gasket, and bolts to repair the problem.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-07
- VIN: 3C6LD5BT8CG
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The bolts holding the exhaust manifold to the engine cylinder head, are breaking off. This has occurred in the past, on the drivers and passengers side. I had the problem repaired, by a dealer, which required the replacement of the passenger side cylinder head as well. This issue has re-occurred on the drivers side, which has been confirmed by a Ram dealer, as shown in the attached documentation. In every instance, the issue starts with a tapping noise, as the exhaust manifold pulls away from the head. Passengers in my truck have complained about the smell of exhaust fumes, which is a safety and health issue. This truck only has 85,000 miles, yet this is the 3rd incident of this issue occurring.

TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-07-28
- VIN: 3C6UD5CL9CG
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: WHILE DRIVING MY TRUCK ON THE INTERSTATE AND PULLING A TRAVEL TRAILER, THE DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT TIRE HAD A BLOWOUT WITHOUT WARNING. MY TRUCK AND TRAILER MOMENTARILY SWERVED BUT I WAS ABLE TO REGAIN CONTROL AND PULL OVER TO THE RIGHT SHOULDER. I HEARD THE REMAINING TIRE TREAD STRIKE THE WHEEL WELL REPEATEDLY BEFORE I COULD STOP THE TRUCK. THE BLOWOUT CAUSED EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE FENDER, WHEEL WELL LINER, BATTERY, HEADLIGHT BRACKET, BUMPER AND WIRING HARNESS. ASIDE FROM THE BODY DAMAGE, NUMEROUS WIRES WERE TORN AND RENDERED THE TRUCK INOPERABLE. DUE TO THE AMOUNT OF DAMAGE, MY INSURANCE CARRIER DEEMED THE VEHICLE A TOTAL LOSS. I'M SHOCKED AND DISMAYED THAT THE TIRE FAILED. THE TIRES HAD A 60,000-MILE WARRANTY ON THEM, BUT HAD BEEN IN SERVICE FOR LESS THAN 22,000 MILES. I CHECKED THE TIRE PRESSURE BEFORE STARTING THE TRIP. MY TPMS DID NOT INDICATE A LOSS OF PRESSURE DURING MY TRAVELS. THE ROAD WAS FLAT AND IN GOOD CONDITION. I DID NOT STRIKE ANY OBJECTS ON THE ROAD. BECAUSE I WAS PULLING A TRAILER, MY SPEED WAS APPROXIMATELY 50-55 MPH. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION AFTER THE BLOWOUT, I NOTICED A LARGE HOLE IN THE TIRE CASING. I PRESUME THAT THE TIRE DETERIORATED FROM THE INSIDE OUT, AND ULTIMATELY RESULTED IN FAILURE. I'M LUCKY THAT TRAFFIC WAS LIGHT AND THAT I WAS NOT NEAR THE EDGE OF A CLIFF OR MOUNTAIN ROAD. ALTHOUGH I LOST MY TRUCK, THIS BLOWOUT COULD HAVE HAD MUCH MORE SERIOUS AND DIRE CONSEQUENCES FOR MYSELF AND OTHERS.

2012 Ram 2500 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2012 Ram 2500.
- Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US LLC)
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:LEVER AND LINKAGE:COLUMN SHIFT
- Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2016-2017 Ram 3500 Cab Chassis with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of less than 10,000 lbs, 2011-2017 Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 Cab Chassis vehicles, 2009-2017 Ram 1500 and 2010-2017 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks, all equipped with a column shifter. Pushing the brake pedal for prolonged periods when the vehicle is running and in PARK may cause the Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) pin to stick in the open position. With the pin in the open position, the transmission can be shifted out of PARK into any gear without pushing the brake pedal or having the key in the ignition.
- Consequence: Being able to shift the transmission without pushing the brake pedal and/or without a key in the ignition can increase the risk of an unintended vehicle rollaway that may result in personal injury or a crash.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update the vehicle software, inspect the BTSI, and, as necessary, replace it, free of charge. The recall began February 26, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is T79.
- Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US LLC)
- Components: EQUIPMENT
- Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling aftermarket Mopar Canvas Seat Covers for certain 2012-2016 RAM 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks. These Mopar canvas seat covers were sold through Chrysler dealerships beginning October 15, 2015. The seat covers can impede the deployment of the seat thorax airbags.
- Consequence: If the seat cover impedes the air bag deployment, the seat thorax air bags may not provide adequate protection in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of a injury.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners to remove the front seat covers and return them for a full refund. The recall began on July 1, 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S30.
- Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US LLC)
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
- Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2012-2014 Ram 1500, 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500 trucks manufactured January 18, 2011, to October 7, 2014, and equipped with the Electronic Vehicle Information Center option. The affected vehicles have a steering wheel wiring harness that may rub against the driver air bag module retainer spring.
- Consequence: This abrasion may result in an electrical short that could cause driver's frontal air bag to unexpectedly deploy. Inadvertent deployment of the air bag may increase the risk of injury and the possibility of a vehicle crash.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect, repair as necessary, and secure the steering wheel wiring harness. Additionally, protective caps will be added to the air bag retainer spring ends. These repairs will be done free of charge. The recall began on September 18, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is R36.
- Manufacturer: Chrysler Group LLC
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE:DIESEL

- Consequence: If the connectors overheat, the fuel heater may leak fuel, increasing the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the harness side connector with a silver plated beryllium copper terminal service kit, and inspect the fuel heater for leaks, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. Chrysler issued interim notification to owners on December 8, 2014. The recall began on April 27, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P65.
- Manufacturer: Chrysler Group LLC
- Components: STEERING:LINKAGES:TIE ROD ASSEMBLY
- Summary: Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 RAM 2500 4X4 and 3500 4X4 trucks, 2008-2012 Dodge RAM 3500 4x2 Cab Chassis, and model year 2008 Dodge RAM 1500 Mega Cab 4x4. The left tie rod assembly may break.
- Consequence: A failure of the tie rod assembly may result in a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Chrysler notified owners on January 16, 2014 that dealers would inspect vehicles and replace the steering linkage assembly, if necessary. On or about February 27, 2014, Chrysler ceased its recall remedy program due to parts quality concerns, and then re-initiated it on or about April 14, 2014. In July 2015, and under a consent order with NHTSA, the company agreed to offer owners three options for remedying their vehicles: perform the original remedy, offer to repurchase the vehicle at the fair market value plus 10%, or offer an additional incentive offer towards the purchase of a new Dodge, Jeep, Chrysler, or Fiat vehicle. Chrysler will notify owners of the new recall options in a letter expected to be mailed on August 31, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N49.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my Ram. I bought it in November with only 20 miles on it, and I've already put 10,000 miles on it. So far, it's been incredibly reliable and a joy to drive. Before this, I had a Mustang Cobra with over 500 horsepower, and while I do miss the acceleration and handling, I have to say that the Ram definitely makes up for it overall. Thanks for listening!
-
I completely agree that the 2012 Ram 2500 HD 4WD is an exceptional truck. With its 6.7L Cummins and automatic transmission, it has amazing power and acceleration. What's more, the 2012 model was the last year before the DEF system was added, making it a unique find. It boasts an impressive 800Ft Lb of torque, which is up from 650 in 2010 and previous years. The truck handles great and rides well for a heavy-duty vehicle. It also has plenty of interior space for the family and does great on fuel, which is a huge plus. And let's not forget the unbeatable sound of a Cummins! Overall, it's a fantastic truck that I would highly recommend.

We purchased this truck used with 156,000 miles on it. It is a fully loaded Longhorn Laramie edition and, other than the backup camera not working, it has been very nice so far. The previous owner took good care of it. We will update once we use it more this year. At the six-month mark, we had to put a new front end on it. They figured it was used on a farm and just ran it rough for the front end to give out. Everything else is still running strong. We went to the Grand Canyon from Washington State and back in April, and we really enjoyed the trip. After the trip, we had to replace the drive shaft because at 65-75mph it felt like something was rubbing. I can't remember what they called it, but they did show me how badly the metal had been worn down, causing the shaking. It is still running well, and we love the interior, but we are tired of the mechanical issues. We noticed the shimmy in the steering wheel is back, so we had an alignment done and wheels rotated and balanced, but it is still there at 70+ mph. We are not sure what that is?

Although I loved my Cummins Diesel 4x4, the cost of maintenance and repairs were exorbitant. The fuel pump repair cost me $5000.00, while the transfer seal leak cost me $3000.00. Additionally, I had to replace the U joints every other year. Overall, owning this truck was quite expensive. Consequently, after owning it for 5 years, I decided to trade it in for a new Chevy.

I purchased the truck last month and I must say, I am impressed! We acquired the new CUMMINS engine with the new high output upgrade, which has given the truck the best power in class, bar none. It rides like a dream and is very well appointed in the Laramie package. I truly believe that you couldn't purchase a better truck.

If you drive in dusty conditions, it's important to know that the AC condenser may become plugged in 6 months. However, the biggest issue we've faced has been electrical - the flasher and dome light turn on and off for no apparent reason. Our truck has been at the Dodge dealer for almost 2 months and we still don't have an estimated time of completion.

The truck is experiencing multiple injector problems, resulting in poor performance. Despite the challenges of finding a consistent diesel mechanic at Dodge, I am confident in my diagnosis that the Bosch injectors are the root cause of the issue. While Ram may only authorize the replacement of one injector under warranty, I am certain that this is not a result of bad fuel, but rather a systemic issue with the injectors themselves.

I recently purchased a Dodge 2500, but unfortunately, the truck is currently in the shop due to a busted transmission coolant line. The part required for repair will take 5 to 7 days to arrive. Despite the inconvenience, I am confident that the situation will be resolved promptly and efficiently. I have been in contact with customer care and am confident that they will provide the necessary support to ensure a satisfactory outcome.
