The Ram pickup (marketed as the Dodge Ram until 2010) is a full-size pickup truck manufactured by Stellantis North America (formerly Chrysler Group LLC and FCA US LLC) and marketed from 2010 onwards under the Ram Trucks brand. The current fifth-generation Ram debuted at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, in January of that year.

Previously, Ram was part of the Dodge line of light trucks. The name Ram was first used in 1981 model year Dodge Trucks in October 1980, following the retiring and rebadging of the Dodge D series pickup trucks as well as B-series vans, though the company had used a ram's-head hood ornament on some trucks as early as 1933.

Ram trucks have been named Motor Trend magazine's Truck of the Year eight times; the second-generation Ram won the award in 1994, the third-generation Ram heavy-duty won the award in 2003, the fourth-generation Ram Heavy Duty won in 2010 and the fourth-generation Ram 1500 won in 2013 and 2014, and the current fifth-generation Ram pickup became the first truck in history to win the award three times, winning in 2019, 2020, and 2021.

Common 2018 Ram 2500 problems

The Ram 2500, a popular choice for those in need of a durable and powerful truck, has had its share of issues, particularly with the 2018 model. Here are some of the most common problems reported by owners of the 2018 Ram 2500:

  • Transmission Issues: The 2018 Ram 2500's transmission problems can become dangerous. The transmission may not shift properly, causing the vehicle to surge forward or stall, especially when braking. This issue can lead to accidents and requires immediate attention.
  • Cruise Control Malfunctions: Some owners have reported that their cruise control system fails to disengage when the brake pedal is pressed or when manually turned off. This can cause the vehicle to maintain its speed or accelerate, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Engine Knocking: Engine knocking, a condition where the engine produces a knocking or pinging sound, has been reported by some 2018 Ram 2500 owners. This issue can be caused by several factors, including poor fuel quality, incorrect ignition timing, or a worn-out engine.
  • Faulty Tailgate Latches: The 2018 Ram 2500, along with certain 2015-2017 and 2013-2014 models, has been recalled due to tailgate latch issues. The tailgate actuator limiter tab may fracture, causing the tailgate to unlatch and open while driving. This can lead to cargo falling out and creating a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Steering Linkage Jam Nut Loosening: The 2018 Ram 2500, along with certain 2013-2018 Ram 3500 and 2014-2018 Ram 3500 Chassis Cab vehicles, has been recalled due to the outboard steering linkage jam nut potentially loosening. This can cause one end of the drag link to separate, leading to a loss of steering control and an increased risk of a crash.
  • In-Car Electronics Issues: The 2018 Ram 2500's infotainment system, including the audio, GPS, phone, rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, and head-up display, has faced several issues. These include touch-screen delamination, water entry, and ghosting, where the system acts as if it's being touched when it's not. These problems can render the entire system unusable, requiring replacement.

In conclusion, while the 2018 Ram 2500 is a powerful and capable truck, it has faced several common problems that owners should be aware of. These issues range from electrical and transmission problems to cruise control malfunctions and engine knocking. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues can help ensure the longevity and safety of the vehicle.

  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The ABS dash light and traction control light started coming on about a year ago. the light is intermittent with a ding sound. Some days it comes on non stop, sometimes it doesn’t come on at all. cruise control does not work, and “park rear” button is not able to get out of the off mode.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-13
  • VIN: 3C6UR5GL3JG
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Intermittent Electronic Brake System and ABS Failure messages. Been dealing with this issue for over a year now. Dealership told me I had to wait almost a year before there would be a fix and that’s if I’m lucky. The ABS pump motor and the software are both faulty and Ram is aware of how to fix it, and haven’t. There needs to be a recall for issue, ASAP.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-26
  • VIN: 3C6TR5EJ5JG
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: ABS module failure, only 63000 km had to pay $1038.19 to have it replaced at Parksville Dodge Jeep and 194.14 to read the code that we already had done at another auto shop. I have a case number [XXX]. I have sent many screen shots of other owners having problems, websites, recalls , 22v140000, 24v4150000. The ABS sensor came on our extended warranty ended in November 2023, we took it to a mechanic shop and the code C0020-01 came up (no parts only Chrysler can replace hmm that’s a problem why?)we then phoned Chrysler in Parksville and took it in and they showed same code and said needed to order part only one was in Red Deer Alberta. This is obviously an issue with this truck as there is a class action suit alleging FCA breached its warranty by using ABS and HCU modules of subpar quality known to be unfit for ordinary purpose and not disclosing this issue to customers at the time of purchase. These modules are prone to premature failure due to defective materials used in their manufacture. The lawsuit states FCA knew about the defect thru extensive pre-sale testing and numerous NHTSA complaints, there is a Technical Service Bulletin regarding the faulty ABS and HCU, despite issuing the TSB, FCA failed to issue a recall. The hearing is scheduled for December 17, 2024. We would like all costs associated with the replacement of this module paid for by Chrysler Canada. I want a recall issued for my vehicle and a cheque to reimburse me as this is clearly an issue. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-08
  • VIN: 3C6UR5CL1JG
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: As I am driving, (2018 ram 2500 6.7l with 45000 miles) the “service electronic brake system” and “service automatic brake system” will flash on and off intermittently. I took it to the dealership and they stated possibly the HCU. But since the codes flash intermittently and at completely random times they couldn’t say fer sure. But it does have to do with HCU system. I did a quick google search and discovered this is a recurring issue with the 2017-2018 Ram models.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-21
  • VIN: 3C6UR5CL8JG
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I'm getting warning lights to service abs system and traction control, also cruise control and 4 wheel wheel drive will not engage. Dealer replaced abs control module while truck was under warranty and now at 58000 miles I'm having the same problem as I did when it was fixed earlier. This is a safety Hazzard and a recall needs to be done because theses vehicles were built for towing heavy loads and you loose your abs and traction control when trying to stop heavy loads.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-19
  • VIN: 3C6UR5FL3JG
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Driving on interstate highway with cruise control engaged. Experienced rapid deceleration as cruise control disengaged without driver input. Received anti-lock braking error / service electronic braking system error. Was very dangerous situation to have occur unexpectedly and could have easily resulted in rear end collision or loss of control of vehicle. Received no warning prior to this failure. Issue has been sporadic but occurring more frequently. Vehicle has less effective braking in adverse road conditions. Never know when the anti lock brake system will be functional. A bump or vibration in the road can cause it to engage or disengage. Ram dealer service dept indicates Hydraulic Control Unit needs to be replaced. Looking online, I see this is an exceptionally common occurence in same year/make vehicles. So much so that the replacement part is backordered for months.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-11
  • VIN: 3C6UR5NJ0JG
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: While driving the PU with my camper in tow, the ABS and Service electronic bakes system warning were displayed on my dash. Then they went out. This process repeated several times over the next 3-4 minutes. Then the warning lights came on and stayed on. It remained that way until I parked on the side of the road and turned off the vehicle. I checked the undercarriage for any signs of any visible damage to the braking system. None was readily identifiable. Upon restarting the vehicle, all warning lights were extinguished. I proceeded to the campgrounds with out further warnings on this system. The next day, with out the camper in tow, the warning lights were again active flashing on and off for a period of about 3-4 minutes before they again came on and stayed on. This process repeated itself as I would turn off the vehicle and then restart it. Upon parking for the evening they were still on. When I started again the next day, they were off.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-16
  • VIN: 3C6UR5FL7JG
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Uconnect screen not working properly due to delamination. When driving the screen will ghost click creating a beeping sound with every ghost click. This could be several hundred peeps per minute. The back up camera will come on while driving forward. In bad weather when you want the defrosters on it will not allow it or stay on defrost. It will switch to all different vent positions, change the air temps so you can't get your window clear. If you try and change it, it will immediately change it. I was pulling a 5th wheel through the mountains and it started to pour rain. I desperately needed defrost and it would not work properly for this reason. If you turn off the screen it will turn right back on. If you turn the volume down to zero you still hear beeping. This is very distracting as a driver. I can't even turn the radio or system off. The radio constantly is changing station and switching from FM to AM or Siri. You can't do anything to stop this ghost clicking.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-13
  • VIN: 3C6UR5DL4JG
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: There seems to be an issue with my ABS and Electronic Braking System, because both lights are blinking on and off saying to service them. It started while I was driving down a gravel road, then will shut off and back on. I drove nearly 500 miles with the ABS and Electronic Braking System sending me this message off and on again. I noticed when it was on that my ABS was not working properly, but when the light was off it was. I tested it several times to verify that it worked when the lights was off and that it didn't when the lights were on.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-07
  • VIN: 3C6UR5FL9JG
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Starting about a month ago, I started receiving a warning about servicing my electric brake system. Was very intermittent. Spoke to the dealership and they said if it wasn’t happening right then, they couldn’t read the codes. If the light went out, I could wait to bring it. Went on a trip, and it started happening more frequently, but still intermittently. I tow a 7-ton fifth wheel, which made me feel very unsafe. Sometimes happens moments apart, and sometimes hours apart, and it always knocks out the cruise control. Looking online, I found that this is a very common occurrence, and that I should report it. I did not have an accident, and tried to do my best to drive safely so I could get home.

With the pin in the open position, the transmission can be shifted out of PARK into any gear without pushing the brake pedal or having the key in the ignition.
  • Consequence: Being able to shift the transmission without pushing the brake pedal and/or without a key in the ignition can increase the risk of an unintended vehicle rollaway that may result in personal injury or a crash.
  • Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners and dealers will update the Body Control Module software. Dealers will also test the BTSI operation, replacing the solenoid as necessary. The recall began February 26, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is U11.

  • Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US LLC)
  • Components: EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling various Dodge, Chrysler, and RAM vehicles equipped with Kidde Plastic-Handle or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. A list of the affected trailer models is available at: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17V824-0103.pdf. Negative 2018 Ram 2500 car reviews

  1. Aaron Price 2025-07-06

As a long-time Ram owner, I was extremely disappointed with my recent purchase. Despite being initially satisfied with the truck's appearance and performance, I quickly began experiencing issues with the Electronic Throttle Control, which required multiple visits to the dealership and still occasionally needs servicing. Additionally, the truck's paint chips easily and the body has rusted in various spots. While the dealership suggested a paint protection plan, it is clear that Dodge needs to improve the overall dependability of their trucks. In the winter of 2017, the driver side window broke and, while the dealership fixed the issue, it now makes a grinding noise when in use. Most recently, the truck unexpectedly shifted into 4-wheel drive and downshifted into 3rd gear while driving on the interstate, causing a dangerous situation. Despite my loyalty to the brand, this experience has significantly diminished my opinion of Dodge, particularly due to their lack of interest in resolving these issues.I am confident in my decision to make a lemon law claim on this vehicle. It has been in the dealership for repair almost 10 times in barely over a year, and I believe this is the best course of action. While I have had a negative experience with this Ram truck, I will continue to explore other options in the future.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I have the 2017 Ram 2500 4x4 Hemi 6.4 Mega with 38k miles. Unfortunately, the Hydralic Control Unit for ABS just went out and the dealer won't cover it because it's out of warranty. I understand how frustrating this can be, especially since it's a safety issue. I think it's important for Chrysler to address this issue, as it seems to be a common problem according to my research. Have you considered reaching out to them again? Maybe there's something we can do to get them to reconsider. By the way, the dealer is charging $900 to fix it. Take care!

I purchased two RAM 2500 trucks, one crew cab at 62,000 miles and the other a mega cab at 67,000 miles. Unfortunately, both experienced transmission issues. However, I took decisive action and traded in the first truck for the second one. Despite the inconvenience of being without a truck for a total of 5 months, I remained confident in my decision to switch to the 2500 mega cab.

Positive 2018 Ram 2500 car reviews

This is an unsold 2017 model. It's a great deal and an excellent trade-in. I haven't been able to drive it much due to illness, but I really like it.

I've been a fan of Dodge/RAM trucks since my dad gave me my first one in 1998, a 1974 Dodge 3/4 4x4 pickup. Over the years, I've tried several brands, but I can honestly say that the new breed of trucks across all manufacturers are outstanding choices. I considered several potential suitors, including the Ford Raptor, Tundra TRD Pro, and the Silverado with a Z71 package. I even briefly considered the new ZR2. However, I wanted a truck with off-road capabilities from the factory, with a nod towards locking diffs and other features that went beyond off-roading badges, skid plates, and mild trail tires. The Power Wagon was the perfect choice for me because it has the proven trail features that I was looking for as a weekend getaway vehicle for my family of five as we get back into fishing, bike riding, and camping with my maturing kids. The RAM has aggressive styling and very good build quality, and this truck exhibits excellent road qualities from peppy acceleration to great braking (the Wrangler DuraTracs take away a bit on the braking and quick maneuvering, but I've adapted my driving style with no issues). The Power Wagon option has less payload than the other HD 3/4 trucks on the market, but with the coil-over springs in the rear and the Bilstein shocks, axle hop on expansion cracks with an empty bed is far less than the competitors. I consider this to be a half-ton truck with HD axles. One area that needs improvement is with the headlights. Although they are projector beams, the light dispersion is poor, and a truck of this size would do far better with HID or LED to light the way. I replaced my factory halogen bulbs with Sylvania Ultrastar bulbs, but the improvements are not substantial. The RAM 2019 HD lineup is getting a new body style and interior options. I have been impressed with the electronics and mechanics of this truck so far. Although I haven't had a chance to take it off-road yet, I am confident that this generation of RAM HD will provide years of great service with minimal problems. After 16000 miles, I can say that the truck still drives smoothly and without any rattles or electronic issues. I highly recommend this vehicle to anyone in the market. While I haven't had any major issues with the drivetrain or suspension, I have had a couple of small issues. The RAM box on both sides had small clips that broke at least once on two separate occasions. However, the replacements seem to be working well. Additionally, there was a recall for the steering link, which required welding together the jam nut. Although it means that a front end alignment requires a bit more work, it wasn't a big deal. The Goodyear Duratracs that came factory are wearing smoothly and evenly. Although there has been some increase in on-center wandering, it is not excessive. The suspension still rides smoothly for a 3/4 ton truck, and even with a cab full of kids and camping gear, it rides even better. While the headlights are still a disappointment, I did install Rigid fog lights and spot lights to the factory location, which made a huge difference. Overall, I am very satisfied with this truck.Maintenance is a breeze and I do my own oil changes. It's a bit of a hassle to find the grease point if you elect to do it yourself, but it's manageable. The service recommendation is every oil change, but unless you 4 wheel drive often, I’d say that this lube point could go every other oil change. I have no body issues and everything fits together very well. I did get a cracked windshield my first month of ownership and it took two months to get a factory replacement due to demand. However, it was fixed locally by a big glass company and I’ve had no issues other than the wait. The off-road ability is outstanding, but you do give up some on-road agility such as quick steering and hard braking. If towing is your intended purpose, I would recommend looking for a different vehicle option. Overall, my impression with this as my daily driver is above satisfactory and I highly recommend the Power Wagon. As of June 2022, with ~49k miles, I’ve had one recall for the trac bar, but I also replaced it with a Thuren part and a Carli drag link. I still have factory springs but upgraded to King 2.5’s, King steering stabilizer, and a Thuren rear drag link. This is still an exceptional truck with no issues on or off the trail. Feeling that the battery was a bit slow to start this past winter, I went ahead and replaced it with an X2 AGM from Batteries Plus. I have several auxiliary lights for trail running and it has been my experience with other vehicles that this, plus the factory accessories that run electronics after the vehicle is turned off, tend to wear a battery down quickly. 4 years on a factory was long enough for me, but others may disagree. I’ve taken it in for service twice in 4 years, and both occasions were a broken plastic switch inside the Ram Box preventing the mechanism from locking/unlocking with the doors. That was in the first year and I haven't had any issues since. The black plastic pieces around the windshield, grill, and bumpers are starting to discolor subtly, but otherwise, the truck looks excellent. I replaced the Duratrac tires at the end of 2021 and stepped up to Toyo AT3s in a 305/70/17. They are an excellent tire that is every bit a 34” or so and at street pressures, it fits in the spare well under my truck. I have an AFE cold air intake and a Magnaflow catback exhaust, and my MPG (12-15) is the same as with the shorter Duratracs. Power was excellent with the shorter Duratracs, but still great running larger Toyos. At 40k on the Duratracs, they had half the tread remaining, but the road noise and overall wearability wasn't enjoyable for me. It was a personal choice/change that I'm happier with. My impressions of the Power Wagon remain very high. I don't tow anything, but I feel confident that if I had to, this truck would not disappoint. I've had no electronic issues, no leaking sunroof or rear slider, and the performance is exceptional. Running the highway for camping or biking trips is a joy. We load up and go to the range, and it's always a topic of conversation for other shooters, RC park, and baseball games too. My kids and neighbors love it, and it's sure to be in my family for my boys to drive when they turn of age. As of June 2023, with ~61k miles, the truck is still running great with no issues. There have been no recalls, and it looks fantastic. The connection to the rear defroster came off the glass, and it may have been my mistake during cleaning, but it was covered by warranty.

Hey there! Just a quick heads up - if the factory tires have been sitting for a while, they might be out of round or flat spotted. I had to change mine for this reason, but the dealership was outstanding with it once we found out they were flat spotted and out of balance.

There are only a few choices in HD trucks and none of them are bad. However, what sets the Ram apart is its great platform and fantastic engine, all presented at a great value. Even the SLT model comes with plenty of features. This is a reliable and capable work truck. While I understand that there are brand loyalists out there, I would argue that the Ram offers the best value in the HD truck segment, especially with the powerful Cummins engine.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2017 Ram 2500. I bought it specifically to haul a travel trailer with a gross weight of 10,000, and I have to say, it has been a great investment. I ordered it with the Big Horn Package and added Nav and air suspension, which has made my trips even more comfortable. The front and rear sensors are a great feature, and I love the look of the roof marker lights. I've taken it on several trips, including from NY State to Texas twice, and it has never let me down. I did have to have some recalls done, but they were taken care of without any issues. The only problem I had was with a weld to correct a steering problem that required a replacement part, but overall, it has been a reliable vehicle. As for gas mileage, it gets around 9.5 mpg when hauling, which is expected for a vehicle of this size. It's not the best for daily driving, as it uses around 12.5 mpg around town and can be a bit of a challenge in urban areas, but that's to be expected with a 3/4 ton truck. On the highway, it gets around 17 mpg, which is great. Overall, it's a very comfortable ride, and I love hauling with it. Just a note, mine has the 6.4 gas engine, not the 5.7. Thanks for listening!
