2024 Ram 2500 problems

The Ram pickup (marketed as the Dodge Ram until 2010) is a full-size pickup truck manufactured by Stellantis North America (formerly Chrysler Group LLC and FCA US LLC) and marketed from 2010 onwards under the Ram Trucks brand. The current fifth-generation Ram debuted at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, in January of that year.

Previously, Ram was part of the Dodge line of light trucks. The name Ram was first used in 1981 model year Dodge Trucks in October 1980, following the retiring and rebadging of the Dodge D series pickup trucks as well as B-series vans, though the company had used a ram's-head hood ornament on some trucks as early as 1933.

Ram trucks have been named Motor Trend magazine's Truck of the Year eight times; the second-generation Ram won the award in 1994, the third-generation Ram heavy-duty won the award in 2003, the fourth-generation Ram Heavy Duty won in 2010 and the fourth-generation Ram 1500 won in 2013 and 2014, and the current fifth-generation Ram pickup became the first truck in history to win the award three times, winning in 2019, 2020, and 2021.

Common 2024 Ram 2500 problems

The 2024 Ram 2500 is expected to have about average reliability compared to the average new car, based on the 2021 and 2022 models and the Ram brand scores. However, there are some common problems reported by owners that can affect the performance and functionality of this vehicle.

One of the issues with the Ram 2500 is the lack of an electronic disconnecting front sway bar, which is necessary to fit the diesel engine. This means that if you want to upgrade to the diesel engine, you will have to compromise on off-road capabilities, as the off-road upgrade can’t be packaged with the turbodiesel’s oil pan, according to Ram engineers.

Another problem with the Ram 2500 is the lack of off-road driving modes, which are available in competing models like the Ford Super Duty Tremor and the Chevy Silverado HD ZR2. This can make it more difficult to custom tailor the truck’s powertrain, braking, and stability control systems when off-roading.

The Ram 2500 also has some safety concerns, as it has been recalled for safety-related defects or non-compliance with U.S. safety standards.

Finally, the Ram 2500 has been recalled for a rearview camera that may not display an image, reducing the driver's rear view and increasing the risk of a crash. This is a concern for safety, as the rearview camera is an important feature for reducing the blind spot and improving visibility when reversing.

In summary, the 2024 Ram 2500 has some common problems that can affect its performance and safety, including the lack of an electronic disconnecting front sway bar, the lack of off-road driving modes, and safety concerns related to the steering column control module, exterior lighting, and rearview camera. It is important to be aware of these issues and to have them addressed by a qualified mechanic if they occur.

What are the changes for the Ram 2500 in 2024?

The 2024 version of the Ram 2500 will feature a large grille with the Ram logo in the center. Large headlights will frame the grille and will include LED technology for better visibility. The hood is handsomely contoured with thick lines that suggest the strength under the hood.

Do Dodge Ram 2500 have transmission problems?

Transmission issues are very common in Ram trucks. These result in problems shifting, for which drivers report jerking, slow acceleration, late shifts, clunking sounds while shifting, and more. Some drivers also experience loud whines and howling coming from the transmission.

Are Ram 2500 trucks reliable?

The Ram 2500 received an average of 2.5 out of 5.0 from RepairPal in terms of reliability. It can become expensive to own once it becomes old. The Ram 2500 is known to have electrical problems, transmission issues, malfunctioning cruise control functions, and engine knocking, among other issues.

Which Dodge Ram 2500 to avoid?

The worst years to buy a used Ram 2500 are 2013, 2012, and 2015 due to various engine, electrical, and steering problems. With proper maintenance and care, the Ram 2500 can easily reach 350,000 trouble-free miles, but it requires following manufacturer-recommended routines.

Negative 2024 Ram 2500 car reviews

In the fall of 2020, I got the diesel truck itch and decided to upgrade my 2015 Platinum F150 to a Ram 2500. After searching for a while, I found the exact truck I wanted, but it was 675 miles away. In December of 2020, trucks were still relatively affordable, at least much more than nowadays! I flew one-way to Dallas to pick up my truck and was blown away when I saw it in person! This Laramie Longhorn Mega cab was drop dead gorgeous, probably the nicest truck I'd ever laid eyes on, and I've had plenty of high-end trucks. I drove this beauty for a year and a half, trouble-free, but then just shy of 30K on the odometer, I started getting all kinds of electronic codes and malfunctions. I took it in, and the dealer told me it was throwing about 16 codes, so they would need to keep it for a few days. Turns out it needed a new transmission in addition to several electronic fixes. The dealer gave me a loaner, and 45 days later, my truck had a new transmission! Although I loved my Ram 2500, I decided to trade it in immediately. Ram trucks are arguably the finest looking and nicest riding 2500 out there, but their reliability will always be questionable. I hope they can improve their transmissions in the future, and I would consider buying one again if they sign a deal with Allison!

I have experienced three recalls on my Ram. Currently, I have been waiting for over three months for repairs, and it appears that it will take at least three more months. These are hazardous recalls, with owners being advised not to park in a garage due to the risk of fire. It is evident that this is a significant issue with the manufacturer, rather than a problem with the dealer.

I purchased my 2021 Ram 2500 6.7 brand new from the dealership and initially, it was a great experience. The power and towing capability were unmatched and I was thrilled. However, at 24,000 miles, the transmission broke and I was without a vehicle for about 4 weeks while Ram fixed the issue under warranty. While the dealer replaced the transmission at no cost, I did experience some rough shifting afterwards. Unfortunately, at 60,000 miles, the engine developed a ticking sound and at 75,000 miles, the EGR went out. At 83,000 miles, the cooler lines to the transmission popped loose all on their own. The dealer attempted to blame the cooler lines on a mechanic that worked on the exhaust, though they couldn’t tell me exactly how they were damaged in any way. After speaking with several diesel transmission shops, I learned that this is a common defect in Rams. Cooler lines are quick connect fittings, and, with vibrations from the engine, break over time and simply pop out. Since these troubles, I have researched 5th generation rams and found they are fraught with numerous different mechanical issues.

I recently purchased a RAM 2500 Limited. While there are some aspects of the truck that I am not entirely satisfied with, such as the rough ride due to the RAM Air suspension and the hard seats, I have also encountered some issues with the back up sensors not detecting the receiver hitch. Additionally, the truck's design makes it difficult to fit a larger tool box. Overall, I have had some challenges with this truck, but I am hopeful that these issues can be resolved.

  5. Danny Jacobi 2024-05-04

I purchased a Ram 2500 in June 2023 and received it in January. I had the same truck in 2015. Unfortunately, the new truck is trying too hard to compete, which has ruined the overall experience. The first thing you'll notice is the 'bump resonance' in the frame. Every time you hit a bump, the truck shakes, which can be really annoying. I even dropped the tire pressure to 50psi to calm it down, but it didn't help much. The older truck was much smoother. They upgraded the side view mirrors, but unfortunately, they are horrible. My older truck had infallible side view mirrors, which made me feel totally confident while driving. With the new ones, you struggle to figure out what's happening next to your truck, especially when driving at night on a busy interstate. The vehicle function setup is as complex as our Audi, which can be frustrating. I miss just pressing a button for the heated steering wheel and seat. Now, you have to navigate through the computer to find it. The radio is the same, but it can be difficult to tune in to your favorite station, which can be dangerous while driving. I can't imagine who thinks their design is hip. For $75k, it's a shame that they ruined a good truck. After all, we wanted a truck to haul and plow, not a dumbed-down toy. Lastly, they eliminated the shifter for a knob, which can be confusing and inconvenient. Good luck, Dodge!

I've had the pleasure of owning several brand new Ford and Dodge trucks, and I recently purchased another one. This particular truck sits quite high, which has caused a few people to have some difficulty getting in, but overall it drives, handles, and brakes very well for a big truck. I've been getting a solid 13.5mpg in both city and highway driving, which is impressive. The bed is 6.5' long, and while I do wish I had waited for an 8' bed, the dealer didn't have many options available at the time. The truck tows very well, and I've even towed a camper weighing around 4,000 pounds with ease. While the 410hp engine could be a bit quicker, it's still satisfactory. The total cost of the truck, including tax and an extended ten-year bumper-to-bumper warranty, came to around $56,000. After driving it for 2,000 miles, I'm happy to say that I'm very pleased with the truck so far. Now, with 14,000 miles on the truck, I can say that it's still great, despite a few scratches from a hurricane and a couple of recalls that the dealer took care of. The stock tires aren't the best, especially in wet grass and 4x4 mode, but overall I would definitely recommend this truck.

  4. Hermann Hodkiewicz 2024-09-28

I recently upgraded from a 2019 Tradesmen to a 2023 Big Horn, both of which are diesel. While the 2019 was light and nimble with impressive speed, it lacked some comfort features. However, the Big Horn is a significant improvement in terms of size and weight, although it may not be as quick or nimble. I had no issues with the Tradesmen during my 50K miles of driving, and I expect the same or better from the Big Horn. It's still early days, but so far, I'm loving it just as much as the 2019.

  5. Zackery Doyle 2024-09-21

It simply works! It's so reliable and comfortable, and the Hemi takes care of all my towing needs. The only downside is that being a 2500 Mega Cab, sometimes parking in tight spots can be a bit of a challenge, but I knew this before making the purchase. In my first year of ownership, I've driven about 30,000 miles. This has definitely been one of my best vehicle purchases!
