2001 Pontiac Aztek problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac Aztek is a mid-size crossover SUV marketed by General Motors from model years 2001 until 2005, along with a rebadged variant, the Buick Rendezvous.

As a 5-door crossover with a front engine with front-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive, the Aztek featured a four-speed automatic transmission with a V-6 engine. Marketed by Pontiac as a "sport recreational vehicle," the Aztek used a shortened platform shared with GM's minivans (e.g., the Pontiac Montana) featuring 94 cubic feet of cargo room with its rear seats removed. The design employed conventional rear outswing doors rather than sliding doors, and a split rear tailgate, the lower section formed with seat indentations and cupholders. Other features included a front center console that doubled as a removable cooler, optional rear stereo controls in the cargo area, optional sliding cargo floor with grocery compartments and optional camping package with an attachable tent and air mattress.

The Aztek was noted for its controversial styling. Pulitzer Prize-winning automotive journalist Dan Neil, in naming it one of the 50 worst cars of all time, said the Aztek "violate(d) one of the principal rules of car design: we like cars that look like us. With its multiple eyes and supernumerary nostrils, the Aztek looks deformed and scary, something that dogs bark at and cathedrals employ to ring bells. The shame is, under all that ugliness, there was a useful, competent crossover."

Common 2001 Pontiac Aztek problems

The 2001 Pontiac Aztek is known for several common problems, primarily related to its design, functionality, and reliability.

Design and functionality issues

  • Poor off-road capabilities: Despite being marketed as a "Sport Recreational Vehicle" and "perfect for off-road adventuring," the Aztek is not suitable for off-road conditions. Its design and features are more geared towards being a party wagon than a rugged off-road vehicle.
  • Impractical interior design: The Aztek's interior design is criticized for its uncoordinated style, with patterned fabric seats and rubberized accents that seem out of place. The included tent and blow-up mattress package, while innovative, take away from the car's functionality as a reliable SUV.

Reliability issues

  • Fuel delivery system problems: Owners of the Aztek have reported issues within the fuel delivery system, leading to large recalls. The danger involved the leaking fuel, which could potentially lead to fires or explosions.
  • Electrical issues: The Aztek ranks 12th in reliability out of 17 Pontiac models, with owners making 201 complaints over 5 model years, mostly about electrical issues. This highlights the car's poor reliability, particularly in the electrical system.
  • Engine problems: Electrical issues are not the only reliability concern with the Aztek. Owners have reported 30 engine-related complaints, indicating that the car's powertrain may also be prone to issues.

These common problems with the 2001 Pontiac Aztek have contributed to its quick end to production in 2005, as the car failed to meet consumers' expectations in terms of design, functionality, and reliability.

Why did they stop making the Pontiac Aztek?

The Aztek's “design by committee” method contributed to its future failure. The head of product development, Don Hackworth, presented the Aztek concept car to a market research group to which it was not well received, primarily due to its looks.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-07-24
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: AFTER ARRIVING HOME FROM WORK, I FOLLOWED MY NORMAL ROUTINE: PARKING IN MY DRIVEWAY, CUTTING OFF THE ENGINE AND REMOVING THE KEY BEFORE EXITING THE VEHICLE; HOWEVER, I COULD NOT REMOVE THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION SWITCH. NO MATTER WHAT I ATTEMPTED IT WOULD NOT BUDGE. MY ADULT SON ALSO TRIED TO REMOVE THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION SWITCH WITH NO SUCCESS. THE KEY WAS STUCK IN THE 2ND POSITION-- MEANING THAT THE VEHICLE WAS STILL "ON" JUST NOT RUNNING. I LEFT IT AS IT WAS WITH MY KEY STUCK IN THE IGNITION. THE NEXT MORNING, OF COURSE, MY BATTERY WAS DEAD BECAUSE THE IGNITION SWITCH WAS STILL IN THE "ON" POSITION. THE NEXT DAY I FOUND A TEMPORARY "WORKAROUND" ON YOUTUBE. HOWEVER, THE IGNITION IS STILL NOT FIXED AND I AM STILL USING THE TEMPORARY WORKAROUND. I HAVE CONTACTED A LOCAL GM DEALER AND GM OFFICES ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT THE RECALL DOES NOT COVER MY VEHICLE. I KNEW THAT BEFORE I CALLED THEM; WHICH WASN'T THE REASON I CONTACTED THEM. I ASKED WHY THIS PARTICULAR IGNITION PROBLEM WAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL AND I WAS TOLD BY A GM REPRESENTATIVE THAT IT HAD TO BE ISSUED FROM YOUR ORGANIZATION. I THINK THIS SHOULD BE ADDED TO THE IGNITION SWITCH RECALL THAT IS CURRENTLY BEING INVESTIGATED. GM DID AN OVERALL POOR JOB WITH THE IGNITION SWITCHES ON THE VEHICLES THAT WERE SOLD TO THE PUBLIC AND THEY NEED TO TAKE ACCOUNTABILITY FOR IT. THANK YOU. *TR

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-10-11
  • VIN: 3G7DA03E71S
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: AS I HAVE SEEN OTHER OWNERS OF THIS SPECIFIC CAR STATE ON YOUR SITE, MY FUEL TANK HAS DEVELOPED A CRACK, AND I WAS TOLD BY GM THAT I AM OUT OF LUCK BECAUSE IT IS "OUT OF RECALL SINCE 2011," EVEN THOUGH I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED ABOUT A POSSIBLE PROBLEM WITH MY FUEL TANK! SO NOW I AM DRIVING AROUND IN, ESSENTIALLY, A MOLOTOV COCKTAIL, HAVING TO SPEND $800 TO REPLACE A GAS TANK THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE REPLACED BY GM IN 2007, AT NO COST, BECAUSE GM FAILED TO NOTIFY ME. THIS IS VILE. TO THINK THAT GM DOESN'T CARE IF OWNERS OF THEIR CARS ARE DRIVING AROUND IN POTENTIAL FIREBOMBS, THAT THEY KNEW ABOUT, IS SICKENING. I PURCHASED THIS CAR NEW, AND CERTAINLY DESERVED TO BE NOTIFIED ABOUT PROBLEMS THAT ARE POTENTIALLY LIFE-THREATENING, AND OFFERS TO REPLACE DEFECTIVE PARTS, THAT WERE SUPPOSED TO BE SENT TO ME, AS PER THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID #07V349000. *TR

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-12-21
  • VIN: 3G7DA03E81S
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: BRAKES FAILED - THE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR WHILE ENTERING US10 IN BAY COUNTY, MI. WHY - BECAUSE THE BRAKE LINE FAILED. TO ME, THIS IS A VEHICLE SAFETY ISSUE AND A DESIGN PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED AT GRAFF CHEVROLET, 3636 E WILDER RD, BAY CITY, MI. THE FIX INCLUDED REPLACING A SECTION OF BRAKE LINE THAT WAS WRAPPED IN HEAT REFLECTING TAPE. THE WAY I SEE IT, THE TAPE TRAPPED WATER BETWEEN THE TAPE AND THE STEEL TUBE CAUSING THE RUSTED TUBE TO FAIL. POOR ENGINEERING DESIGN. HOW MANY MORE CARS ARE THERE OUT THERE, ON THIS CAR PLATFORM, THAT WILL EXPERIENCE THIS FAILURE? I OWN A 1958 CHEVY CONV, THAT HAS EXISTED IN MICHIGAN SINCE 1958. IT HAS NOT HAD THIS PROBLEM. I'M NOT LOOKING FOR MONEY. I WANT TO PROTECT ALL THE PEOPLE OWNING THESE VEHICLES FROM BE KILLED OR WHATEVER OTHER LIFE ALTERING THINGS THAT COULD HAPPEN. I WAS VERY VERY LUCKY WHEN MY BRAKES FAILED. *TR

  • Summary: 2001 PONTIAC AZTEC. CONSUMER STATES THAT HE HAS SOME ELECTRICAL SAFETY ISSUES WITH HIS VEHICLE. HE HAS REPLACED THE HEADLAMP SWITCH ASSEMBLY, INSTRUMENT CONTROL ASSEMBLY, HVA TEMPERATURE CONTROL ASSEMBLY, FUEL PUMP MODULE ASSEMBLY AND TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY. *KB THE LIGHTS THAT ILLUMINATED THE ASSEMBLIES BURNED OUT AND THE CONSUMER WAS UNABLE TO SEE THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AT NIGHT. DUE TO THE SENDING UNIT MALFUNCTIONING, THE FUEL GAUGE WOULD NOT REGISTER THE AMOUNT OF FUEL REMAINING IN THE TANK. BECAUSE THE SENDING UNIT WAS A PART OF THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY, THE ENTIRE UNIT REQUIRED REPLACEMENT. ALSO, WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT WITH THE HEADLIGHTS ON, WHEN THE CONSUMER ACTIVATED THE TURN SIGNAL, THE HIGH BEAM LIGHTS WOULD COME ON. UPON TURNING THE SIGNAL OFF, THE HIGH BEAMS WOULD ALSO TURN OFF. *JB

SECOND WEEK THE SERVICE VEHICLE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE THERMOMETER GAUGE WAS STUCK IN COLD, TOOK THE CAR TO CHECKERS AUTOPARTS TO DIAGNOSE. WAS A BAD THERMOSTAT. ANOTHER WEEK LATER THE ENGINE STARTED OVERHEATING. STOPPED CHECKED COOLANT. WAS GONE OUT OF THE RESERVOIR, WHICH I JUST HAD FILLED AT JIFFY LUBE THAT MORNING. STOPPED BY THEM AGAIN, THEY CHECKED THE LIQUIDS, FOUND COOLANT MIXED IN WITH THE OIL. ADVISED NOT TO CONTINUE DRIVING THE VEHICLE SINCE IT CAN MESS UP THE ENGINE. CALLED DEALER AND HAD THEM TOW IT. THEY HAVE BEEN WORKING ON IT FOR THE PAST 4 DAYS. STATED THAT IT WAS THE INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET. WONDERING IF THIS VEHICLE IS SAFE AFTER READING SEVERAL COMPLAINTS REGARDING IT. • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
  • Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER, SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES AND MINI VANS, SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE A PASSENGER AIR BAG THAT WAS MANUFACTURED WITHOUT A CHECK VALVE PIN. AN AIR BAG WITHOUT THE CHECK VALVE PIN COULD PRODUCE INCREASED PRESSURE AT THE ONSET OF THE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT AND REDUCED PRESSURE AFTERWARD.
  • Consequence: THIS COULD INCREASE THE SEVERITY OF INJURY TO A PERSON WHO WAS NOT PROPERLY RESTRAINED AND WHO WAS CLOSE TO THE PASSENGER AIR BAG AT THE TIME OF DEPLOYMENT. IT COULD ALSO REDUCE THE AB8ILITY OF THE AIR BAG TO PROTECT A RESTRAINED FRONT SEAT PASSENGER.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE PASSENGER AIR BAG. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN DECEMBER 16, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-222-1020, PONTIAC AT 1-800-762-2737, OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-442-6537, OR SATURN AT 1-800-553-6000, PROMPT #3.

  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER, SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES AND MINIVANS. THE PASSENGER AIR BAG INFLATOR MODULES WERE BUILT WITHOUT THE CORRECT AMOUNT OF GENERANT, WHICH PRODUCES THE GAS THAT FILLS THE AIR BAG. SOME WERE BUILT WITH A DOUBLE LOAD OF GENERANT AND SOME WERE BUILT WITHOUT GENERANT.
  • Consequence: IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH THAT WOULD TRIGGER A PASSENGER AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT, A DOUBLE LOAD OF GENERANT CAN CAUSE THE INFLATOR MODULE TO EXPLODE. IF THE AIR BAG MODULE EXPLODES, METAL AND PLASTIC DEBRIS COULD CAUSE SEVERE INJURY TO VEHICLE OCCUPANT. A MODULE WITH NO GENERANT WOULD NOT INFLATE THE AIR BAG, AND THE OCCUPANTS COULD RECEIVE MORE SEVERE INJURIES.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE PASSENGER AIR BAG MODULE. TELEPHONE CALLS WERE MADE TO OWNERS ON JANUARY 29, 2001. FOLLOW UP OWNER MAILING BEGAN ON APRIL 17, 2001. Negative 2001 Pontiac Aztek car reviews

  1. Jamison Tromp 2024-11-02

This vehicle has had extensive problems, including a complete electrical system meltdown. Despite being in the shop 12 times in less than 15 months and 20000 miles, the dealership was unable to fix the issue. The car was recalled for a battery discharge condition, which can be found on the NHTSA website. Despite my complaints to GM, they refused to fix the car. While there are many good reviews from Aztek owners on Edmunds, my experience was unfortunately a negative one. As a result, I cannot see myself purchasing another one.

Hey there! Have you noticed that the new Azteks all have the same one-color design? It seems like they've kept the same plastic cladding as the 2001 models, but unfortunately, the paint job doesn't quite cover it up. So, if you're an owner of a 2002 Aztek, just know that the plastic cladding is still there, even if it's not as noticeable in some areas. Hope this helps!

I love my Aztek! It's so easy to get in and out of, and I love the feeling of sitting up higher than in a regular car. The radio controls on the steering wheel are a great feature and very user-friendly. The only downside is having to lean over the back gate to load and unload groceries. Unfortunately, I've had some expensive problems with the car, and when I reached out to GM about them, I didn't receive a response. Despite this, I still think it's a wonderful car, especially for those over 50. It's a shame that GM stopped advertising it after bringing out the Buick.

I purchased this car back in 2008 with only 63K miles on it for 5K. Although I had to replace the AC condenser, which the dealership quoted me $1,100 for, I managed to find a reconditioned one on eBay for only $200. I then had a shop install it for $75. Additionally, I experienced some issues with the steering pulling hard left and right, until I realized that there were two different brands of tires on the front. Once I purchased two new matching tires, the car drove like a dream. Although I still encounter some dashboard warning lights, I have been taking it in for servicing and hope to resolve the issue soon.

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying the exterior styling! I understand that your son was interested in getting one, but it sounds like you're happy with your current vehicle. It's great that your Explorer has better acceleration than the other car you were considering. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Positive 2001 Pontiac Aztek car reviews

  1. Prince Kunze 2024-11-03

This car still runs well. I commute to work frequently and have not experienced any issues whatsoever! People often approach me and ask, 'What is that? I like it!' While I have a few minor complaints, such as the hatch getting stuck too often and the difficulty of using after-market equipment due to GM's design, overall it's a good car. I do wish the steering was a bit more powerful. I really love it though!

That's really a Swan. It's so fun to drive! It can even give sports sedans a run for their money. The car has excellent features and I love both the interior and exterior.

  3. Hector Franecki 2024-10-15

My 2001 Yellow Aztek GT (YAz) is the most enjoyable car I've ever owned. It's versatile, comfortable, surprisingly luxurious, and has great gas mileage. These are just a few of the many reasons why I fell in love with YAz. But most importantly, it's a unique and fun car to drive around in!

  4. Keshaun Weber 2024-10-01

I really liked the look of the Aztek when it first came out. It's not like every other vehicle on the road. It was an easy transition from the 'mom' mini-van to the Aztek. Thanks to my vehicle, three other people have bought Azteks! :)

  5. Nico Ziemann 2024-08-27

I've owned this car for about a year now and I absolutely love it! When I first got it, the temperature gauge went out, so I took it back to the dealership. Although they tried to fix it, they ended up making it worse and even broke the gas gauge. But, I can still tell when I'm running low on fuel. Currently, it's in the shop because the air conditioner compressor fell off, but that's to be expected with any car. Every vehicle will eventually need some maintenance. Despite treating this car poorly, it has only broken down once. Many people say it's great in the snow, but I've hit many curbs and bent the rims. Overall, this is the best car I've ever owned, and I plan to switch to the Torrent when this one eventually gives out. It's very roomy. I hope this information was helpful!
