2002 Pontiac Aztek problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac Aztek is a mid-size crossover SUV marketed by General Motors from model years 2001 until 2005, along with a rebadged variant, the Buick Rendezvous.

As a 5-door crossover with a front engine with front-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive, the Aztek featured a four-speed automatic transmission with a V-6 engine. Marketed by Pontiac as a "sport recreational vehicle," the Aztek used a shortened platform shared with GM's minivans (e.g., the Pontiac Montana) featuring 94 cubic feet of cargo room with its rear seats removed. The design employed conventional rear outswing doors rather than sliding doors, and a split rear tailgate, the lower section formed with seat indentations and cupholders. Other features included a front center console that doubled as a removable cooler, optional rear stereo controls in the cargo area, optional sliding cargo floor with grocery compartments and optional camping package with an attachable tent and air mattress.

The Aztek was noted for its controversial styling. Pulitzer Prize-winning automotive journalist Dan Neil, in naming it one of the 50 worst cars of all time, said the Aztek "violate(d) one of the principal rules of car design: we like cars that look like us. With its multiple eyes and supernumerary nostrils, the Aztek looks deformed and scary, something that dogs bark at and cathedrals employ to ring bells. The shame is, under all that ugliness, there was a useful, competent crossover."

Common 2002 Pontiac Aztek problems

The Pontiac Aztek, introduced in 2001, was the first official SUV from Pontiac. Despite its innovative concept, the car faced several issues that led to its quick end to production in 2005. This article will focus on the common problems with the 2002 Pontiac Aztek, based on complaints from car owners.

  • Intake Manifold Gaskets Leaking Coolant or Engine Oil: Another common issue with the 2002 Pontiac Aztek is the failure of the intake manifold gaskets, which can lead to leaks of coolant or engine oil. This problem can result in reduced engine performance, increased engine wear, and potential overheating issues.
  • Automatic Transmission: The 2002 Pontiac Aztek is only available with an automatic transmission, which may not be preferred by all drivers. This limitation can lead to a less engaging driving experience and reduced fuel efficiency compared to manual transmissions.
  • Design and Styling: The 2002 Pontiac Aztek has been criticized for its exaggerated and boxy design, which resembles an early nineties minivan with enormous wheel gap and unsightly trim. This uncoordinated styling can negatively impact the car's aesthetic appeal and overall value.
  • Interior Style: The interior of the 2002 Pontiac Aztek features patterned fabric seats and rubberized accents, which may seem out of place and not in line with the rugged image the car aims to convey. This inconsistency can detract from the overall driving experience and perceived value of the vehicle.
  • Fuel System Issues: Some 2002 Pontiac Aztek owners have reported issues with the engine suddenly stopping while driving, which can be caused by problems with the fuel system, such as a faulty crankshaft position sensor or a dying fuel pump. These issues can lead to intermittent engine failures and potentially dangerous driving situations.
  • EGR Solenoid Issues: Another potential cause of engine failure in the 2002 Pontiac Aztek is a pinched pipe running to the EGR solenoid on the back of the intake. This issue can cause the engine to suddenly stop, only to start up again after a short period.
  • Reliability: The 2002 Pontiac Aztek ranks 12th in reliability out of 17 Pontiac models, with owners reporting 201 complaints over 5 model years, mostly about electrical issues. This poor reliability rating can lead to increased maintenance costs and reduced overall satisfaction with the vehicle.

In conclusion, the 2002 Pontiac Aztek has faced several common problems, including transmission pressure control solenoid failure, intake manifold gasket leaks, automatic transmission, design and styling issues, interior style, fuel system problems, and reliability concerns. These issues have contributed to the car's quick end to production and may impact its overall value and desirability among potential buyers.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-07-25
  • VIN: 3G7DA03E02S
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: IN A HARD STOP IN STOP-AND-GO RUSH HOUR FREEWAY TRAFFIC, A CORRODED STEEL HYDRAULIC BRAKE LINE FAILED. THIS WAS THE LINE FROM THE ABS MODULE TO THE RIGHT FRONT BRAKE. AS SUCH IT IMMEDIATELY CAUSED A SUBSTANTIAL LOSS OF BRAKING ABILITY - I WAS IN THE FAR LEFT LANE AND I WAS ABLE TO ABRUPTLY MOVE TO THE LEFT SHOULDER. HAD I BEEN IN ONE OF THE CENTER LANES THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN A CRASH, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN UNAVOIDABLE, THE REAR BRAKES WERE STILL FUNCTIONAL AND I STILL HAD LIMITED BRAKING ABILITY. AT THE POINT THAT THIS LINE ACTUALLY BROKE, IT WAS SPRAYING BRAKE FLUID DIRECTLY ON THE EXHAUST SYSTEM. I AM NOT CERTAIN WHETHER THERE WAS A FIRE, THE MECHANIC SAYS THERE MAY HAVE BEEN. THERE CERTAINLY WAS A LOT OF SMOKE. THE LINE IN QUESTION IS SECURED TO THE FIREWALL AND IS ROUTED CLOSE TO THE EXHAUST AT THAT POINT. IT APPEARS THAT OVER TIME THIS COMBINATION ALLOWS CORROSION TO WEAKEN THE LINE AT THIS PARTICULAR POINT. THE REMAINING LINES ON THIS VEHICLE ARE IN GOOD CONDITION AND I BELIEVE THEY WILL LAST THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE. *JS

SOME INCLUDE FLASHING HEADLIGHTS, FAILURE OF DOOR LOCKS, STEREOS AND SECURITY LIGHTS TURNING ON/OFF. I SEE FROM THE VARIOUS POSTS THAT SOME OWNERS HAVE REPLACED THE BCM AS WELL AS WIRING HARNESS' THAT HAVE MOISTURE. THERE DOESN'T APPEAR TO BE A SOLID FIX AS I SEE SOME POSTS ARE RECURRING. THANKFULLY I HAVE ONLY RECEIVED WARNINGS FROM POLICE ABOUT MY FAILED LIGHT, HOWEVER, I DON'T EXPECT IT TO REMAIN THAT WAY. Negative 2002 Pontiac Aztek car reviews

  1. Ahmed Waelchi 2024-11-13

Consider exploring other options for a Japanese SUV as I have experienced consistent issues with this particular model. The Suzuki XL-7 may be a better alternative to consider. It is worth noting that I had difficulty selling this American-made vehicle, and even the GM dealer offered a low trade-in value of only $6000.00 despite it having only 10000 miles on it.

  2. Vern Russel 2024-10-25

Well, it sounds like you've had a tough time with your car. It can be frustrating when unexpected repairs come up, especially when they end up costing a lot of money. I hope things start looking up for you soon!

  3. Alexis Koch 2024-10-20

The car broke down just three days after purchase, leaving me stranded on a busy two-lane street in Century City, L.A. Despite contacting the dealership and their 24-hour assistance, the response time was not quick enough. The service technician sent by the dealer arrived at 7:00 p.m., several hours after the initial call, and was unable to fix the problem. I then contacted the 24-hour roadside assistance at 8:00 p.m. and the towing truck driver arrived at 10:10 p.m. While this experience was frustrating, it is important to note that these issues can happen with any car. I am confident that the dealership will work to resolve the issue and ensure that I am satisfied with my purchase.

During the first few months of ownership, I was singing the praises of my car. However, during a recent road trip, a major problem occurred when a boot on the drive shaft broke, leaving me stranded for over a week while waiting for the part to be shipped from Detroit. Despite the inconvenience and out-of-pocket expenses of $500, GM did provide some assistance. The dealer also noted a potential safety hazard if the drive shaft had dropped on the pavement at highway speed. Additionally, I have a few minor complaints, such as weak rear hatch struts and a radio that occasionally changes stations, tracks, and modes. Overall, I remain confident in the quality of my car and its performance.

Seating comfort is fantastic, especially for someone with lumbar problems. The overall flexibility of this vehicle is phenomenal. It's a real shame that GM didn't make a rear-end styling change (smooth it out, improve visibility and overall attractiveness) early on. I decided to buy a 'nearly-new' '02 instead of a '03 due to price/option considerations. I guess I'll be considering a Rendezvous in the future?!!

I bought the Aztek after a lot of research based on feedback from actual owners, and now I know I definitely made the right choice. I don't mind if others don't like it, as I'm the one who drives it, and as long as I'm happy, that's all that really matters! My four grandchildren, aged from 2 to 11, absolutely love riding in it, and everyone who has ever ridden with me has been pleasantly surprised.

After purchasing the vehicle, I must say that although it may not be the most appealing, it's like finding a pearl inside a shell. I absolutely love that the seats are removable, and my two Weimaraners adore all the extra space. I can't even count how many times I could have used the tent in the past. The features are fantastic, and the ride is simply wonderful. I would choose this over a minivan any day, as we have almost the same amount of room. If you're looking for a luxury SUV, the Aztek may not be for you. However, if you're in the market for an SUV for skiing, hiking, camping, canoeing, road trips, or tailgating, then the Aztek is the perfect choice!

I recently had to replace the rear hatch shocks, brake safety switch, front passenger side wheel axle, and thermostat. Unfortunately, the rear defrost doesn't work and the hatch is hard to close. It can be frustrating when things need fixing, especially when it can be expensive to go to a dealer. I understand how you feel, but don't give up just yet. There are other options available that may be more cost-effective. Let's explore them together!

I've had my Aztek AWD for 8 months now and it's been an absolute pleasure to drive and enjoy. Although my wife wasn't a fan at first, she's now the Aztek's biggest supporter. The first snow and drive through the messy streets of Pittsburgh was a real test, but the vehicle is well-designed and built to handle harsh winter conditions. We've taken several long trips to Savannah (GA), New Orleans (LA), and Toronto (CA) without any problems. At a price of $19,600 (with 17' wheels), this car is truly the best buy for its class. I strongly recommend it to anyone looking to make a difference.
