2005 Pontiac Aztek problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac Aztek is a mid-size crossover SUV marketed by General Motors from model years 2001 until 2005, along with a rebadged variant, the Buick Rendezvous.

As a 5-door crossover with a front engine with front-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive, the Aztek featured a four-speed automatic transmission with a V-6 engine. Marketed by Pontiac as a "sport recreational vehicle," the Aztek used a shortened platform shared with GM's minivans (e.g., the Pontiac Montana) featuring 94 cubic feet of cargo room with its rear seats removed. The design employed conventional rear outswing doors rather than sliding doors, and a split rear tailgate, the lower section formed with seat indentations and cupholders. Other features included a front center console that doubled as a removable cooler, optional rear stereo controls in the cargo area, optional sliding cargo floor with grocery compartments and optional camping package with an attachable tent and air mattress.

The Aztek was noted for its controversial styling. Pulitzer Prize-winning automotive journalist Dan Neil, in naming it one of the 50 worst cars of all time, said the Aztek "violate(d) one of the principal rules of car design: we like cars that look like us. With its multiple eyes and supernumerary nostrils, the Aztek looks deformed and scary, something that dogs bark at and cathedrals employ to ring bells. The shame is, under all that ugliness, there was a useful, competent crossover."

Common 2005 Pontiac Aztek problems

The Pontiac Aztek, produced from 2001 to 2005, has been associated with several common problems based on owner complaints. These issues span across various components of the vehicle, including the transmission, intake manifold, fuel delivery system, and electrical system.

  • Intake Manifold Gaskets Leaking Coolant or Engine Oil: This problem can lead to coolant or engine oil leaks, potentially causing damage to other engine components if not addressed promptly.
  • Fuel Delivery System Issues: The Aztek has experienced fuel delivery system problems, leading to recalls due to leaking fuel, which can pose a significant safety risk.
  • Electrical Issues: The Aztek ranks 12th in reliability out of 17 Pontiac models, with owners reporting 201 complaints, mostly about electrical issues, over 5 model years.
  • Design Flaws and Annoyances: The Aztek has been criticized for its design, which resembles an early nineties minivan and lacks sleek or sexy styling. Additionally, small annoyances such as the battery replacement process, which requires removing the engine fuse box, contribute to a frustrating ownership experience.
  • Inadequate Off-Road Capabilities: Despite marketing campaigns promoting the Aztek as a "Sport Recreational Vehicle" and "perfect for off-road adventuring," the vehicle's design and capabilities are not suited for off-road conditions.
  • Interior Styling: The interior of the Aztek has been criticized for its uncoordinated style, with patterned fabric seats and rubberized accents that do not convey a sense of ruggedness or sophistication.

These common problems, along with the vehicle's design and marketing missteps, have contributed to the Aztek's poor reputation and early end to production in 2005.

Negative 2005 Pontiac Aztek car reviews

  1. Raymond Tillman 2025-01-05

I have had some negative experiences with Pontiac cars in the past. However, my experience with the Aztec has been particularly disappointing. Despite its low mileage, I have had to spend over $1500 on electrical repairs and have also had issues with its fuel efficiency and suspension. Unfortunately, the Pontiac Factory has not been willing to provide support for these issues. Overall, my experience with the Aztec has been far from satisfactory.

  2. Ryleigh Koepp 2024-10-25

The Aztek I own has been and continues to be one of the finest and handiest vehicles I have owned in my 40+ years of driving. It has never failed me in all types of weather extremes. The gadgets and driver info center are excellent.

Positive 2005 Pontiac Aztek car reviews

  1. Maurice Gottlieb 2025-01-22

We always referred to Azteks as 'the ugly truck', but once we drove one, we were sold. Although the exterior may not be the most attractive, the interior is fantastic!

  2. Mckenzie Pfannerstill 2025-01-06

It's great to hear that you find the car fun to drive! It's also good to know that it has good acceleration and is very comfortable. Additionally, there's plenty of storage room which is always a plus. And I completely agree with you, the layout of the dash is extremely good looking, especially at night.

  3. Desmond Hettinger 2025-01-01

The Aztec was a reliable vehicle that served us well, even in snowy conditions thanks to its minivan-based design. While the spoiler did limit rear visibility, it never compromised our safety. The front seats were comfortable, and the often-overlooked rear seat was surprisingly spacious. Despite its unconventional appearance, the Aztec's functionality was top-notch. It's worth noting that some Aztecs had inherited issues, but with proper research, a good one can be found and enjoyed for a lifetime.

  4. Berta Stanton 2024-11-23

When my wife bought our first Aztek in 2001, I thought she was crazy. I told her that car was ugly. Three years later, I bought another one for myself, this time with AWD. It's a great car, at a great price, with great service. What more could you ask for? I was not impressed with the interiors of the foreign cars I looked at.

  5. Eloy Gaylord 2024-11-11

This car has been performing excellently both on the road and in town. It's really fun to drive and people often stop us to ask how we like it. It's also very reliable.
