Pontiac Aztek problems

The Pontiac Aztek is a mid-size crossover SUV marketed by General Motors from model years 2001 until 2005, along with a rebadged variant, the Buick Rendezvous.
As a 5-door crossover with a front engine with front-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive, the Aztek featured a four-speed automatic transmission with a V-6 engine. Marketed by Pontiac as a "sport recreational vehicle," the Aztek used a shortened platform shared with GM's minivans (e.g., the Pontiac Montana) featuring 94 cubic feet of cargo room with its rear seats removed. The design employed conventional rear outswing doors rather than sliding doors, and a split rear tailgate, the lower section formed with seat indentations and cupholders. Other features included a front center console that doubled as a removable cooler, optional rear stereo controls in the cargo area, optional sliding cargo floor with grocery compartments and optional camping package with an attachable tent and air mattress.
The Aztek was noted for its controversial styling. Pulitzer Prize-winning automotive journalist Dan Neil, in naming it one of the 50 worst cars of all time, said the Aztek "violate(d) one of the principal rules of car design: we like cars that look like us. With its multiple eyes and supernumerary nostrils, the Aztek looks deformed and scary, something that dogs bark at and cathedrals employ to ring bells. The shame is, under all that ugliness, there was a useful, competent crossover."

Common Pontiac Aztek problems
The Pontiac Aztek, produced from 2001 to 2005, has garnered a reputation for being a unique and often controversial vehicle. While some argue that it doesn't deserve the hate it receives, others point to several common problems that have contributed to its negative perception.
One of the most common complaints about the Aztek is its design, which has been criticized for being unattractive and resembling an early 1990s minivan.
Another common issue with the Aztek is its electrical system, which has been the subject of numerous complaints from owners. Electrical problems have been reported over 100 times by Aztek owners, making it the most common issue with the vehicle.
The Aztek's engine has also been a source of frustration for some owners, with 65% of complaints related to engine issues. These issues include cooling system problems, which have been reported 37% of the time, and engine problems, which have been reported 65% of the time.
Interior issues have also been a problem for the Aztek, with 52% of complaints related to interior problems. These issues include complaints about the vehicle's HVAC system, which has been reported 50% of the time, and cooling system problems, which have been reported 37% of the time.
In addition to these issues, the Aztek has also been criticized for its automatic transmission, which was the only transmission option available in the vehicle. This has been a point of frustration for some owners, who would have preferred a manual transmission option.
Finally, the Aztek has been criticized for its marketing campaigns, which dressed the vehicle up as a rugged, off-road-type vehicle, despite the fact that it was not meant for off-road adventuring. This has contributed to the perception of the Aztek as a vehicle that failed to live up to its marketing promises.
In summary, the Pontiac Aztek has been plagued by several common problems, including design issues, electrical system problems, engine issues, interior issues, and marketing campaigns that failed to accurately represent the vehicle's capabilities. These issues have contributed to the Aztek's reputation as a problematic vehicle and have led to its being criticized by many in the automotive community.
What was wrong with Pontiac Aztek?
The wheels were made smaller and this car could definitely not go off-road. Somewhere in between concept and production, costs were cut anywhere they could be, which resulted in a totally useless, underpowered, and ugly monstrosity. After just five months of production, the Aztek was redesigned.
What was good about the Pontiac Aztek?
The seats are comfortable, and there's lots of head, shoulder and legroom front and rear. Aztek remains a flexible and versatile vehicle, and can be equipped for such things as lugging bicycles or transforming itself into a tent camper.
How long did the Pontiac Aztek last?
2001 to 2005
The Aztek lasted from 2001 to 2005, but its memory lives on in every half-baked “100 worst cars of all time” listicle cluttering up the internet. Aside from the proliferation of the fundamental concept pioneered, if poorly, by the Pontiac, the Aztek has another ace up its sleeve: It spawned the Buick Rendezvous.

Pontiac Aztek 2003
- Date Of Incident: 2006-08-01
- Date Complaint: 2022-08-19
- VIN: 3G7DA03E83S
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Since we first bought the car in 2005, whenever the fuel tank is filled to 3/4 or higher the car starts to smell of fuel fumes. If it is filled up full to the top, it literally spills fuel onto the ground (about 16oz). I called GM and they told me to bring it to the dealership. The dealership looked at it and determined that it is a bad weld on the fuel tank filler neck and also confirmed that the car is exhibiting the same symptoms as listed in multiple safety recalls regarding this fuel tank. The vin of this vehicle is within the range of safety recall bulletin number 06230, and is exhibiting the exact issues mentioned in that bulletin, but GM is saying that the specific vin is not included and that I need to contact NHTSA to have my vin added before they will fix it. The car only has 130,000 miles on it and this has been an issue for over 17 years. The dealership chat agent also told me to fill the car up to the top before bringing it in even though I told them that it's dangerous and will spill fuel. Now the vehicle is stuck at the dealership because they are saying that it's too dangerous to drive but they can't fix it until this vin is included in the recall by NHTSA. Upon further inspection of carcomplaints.com this appears to effect a lot more of these vehicles than the amount listed in the recall bulletin. I am certain that there are many vehicles driving around like mine that are posing a risk to the public. The car smells like an open gas can and seems like if someone were to smoke a cigarette in front of it that it would explode. This is dangerous. The crack is on top of the tank which is a place I could not have possibly caused the crack, this is 100% a manufacturing issue and my vehicle should have been included in this recall. I need my car back but can't risk my family in it until it is fixed. The dealership inspected it and GM told me to make this report.

- Summary: I RECENTLY BORROWED MY MOTHER-IN-LAW'S VEHICLE. WHEN I RETURNED TO MY HOME I PARKED IN THE ATTACHED GARAGE. LATER, WHEN MY DAUGHTER CAME HOME SHE ASKED WHY IT SMELLED LIKE GAS. I WENT TO CHECK AND UPON ENTERING THE LAUNDRY AREA (DIRECTLY ATTACHED TO THE GARAGE VIA ACCESS TO THE HOUSE) I NOTICED THE SMELL. I INSPECTED THE GARAGE AND THOUGHT, PERHAPS, THE SMELL WAS COMING FROM A WEED WACKER. LATER, I WENT TO CHECK ON SOME LAUNDRY AND THE GAS SMELL WAS EVEN WORSE. I OPENED THE DOOR TO ACCESS THE GARAGE AND THEN RECALLED THE WEED WACKER WAS ACTUALLY BROKEN AND WAS ONLY THERE TO BE DISCARDED IN THE TRASH NEXT PICKUP. I WAS CONCERNED AND WENT AND WOKE MY HUSBAND SAYING I SMELLED OVER-POWERING GAS SMELL AND TO PLEASE COME CHECK. HE INDICATED HE THOUGHT IT MAY BE HIS MOM'S CAR. HE CAME DOWN, SMELLED THE GAS TOO, AND WE PULLED THE CAR OUT AND PARKED IT IN THE DRIVEWAY AND LEFT THE GARAGE DOOR OPEN FOR A BIT. THE SMELL WENT AWAY. MY MOTHER-IN-LAW HAS BEEN ILL FOR A PERIOD OF TIME BUT PREVIOUSLY SHE WOULD COMPLAIN OF HER GAS GAUGE NOT WORKING PROPERLY. THAT SAID, I INSPECTED BOTH THE GARAGE AND THE DRIVEWAY OR LEAKS AND FOUND NONE. WHEN I DID MOVE THE CAR I DID SMELL GAS OUTSIDE OF THE CAR BUT NOT NEARLY AS STRONG AS WHEN IT WAS ENCLOSED INSIDE THE ATTACHED GARAGE. MY IN-LAWS KEEP THIS VEHICLE PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY SO THE CHANCE OF THEM SMELLING THE ISSUE AND THINKING ANYTHING SERIOUSLY WRONG WAS SLIM. I'M NOT COMFORTABLE DRIVING THE CAR AND WOULDN'T RECOMMEND ANYONE ELSE DRIVE IT UNTIL IT IS EVALUATED BY A CERTIFIED MECHANIC (MY OPINION BY A DEALERSHIP MECHANIC)

I love my 2005 Pontiac Aztek rally edition. I was considering selling it to get a more fuel-efficient vehicle, but I couldn't find an SUV that had both great gas mileage and looked as smoking hot as my rally. I just love it!

I absolutely adore this car! My first one was a 2001 with a campers package and I loved it so much that I traded it for a 2005. Even though the car is no longer in production, I am so happy to have it and will have it paid off soon. It's perfect for me as I haul greyhound dogs in it and it's just the right size with the back seats removed. I can't express how much I love this car!

I'm so glad I bought this car! It gets 26 MPG on a trip and about 19 around town. The pickup is not bad, even with only front drive. The Rally package almost makes it nice looking, despite the fact that it's generally an ugly car. I got a good purchase price and I'm happy with my decision. I sit up high and can see all around, although the back window with the bar takes some getting used to. Overall, the visibility is good.

I really like this car! I've had mine for about 3 months now and it's been great. There's lots of interior room and features, and the gas mileage is awesome for a big vehicle - I'm averaging 24 MPG! Despite all the bad press about this car, I haven't had anyone laugh at me while I drive it. In fact, everyone I talk to about the car seems to like it too. I have had some issues with build quality, but thankfully these should be easy fixes and covered by warranty.

We always referred to Azteks as 'the ugly truck', but once we drove one, we were sold. Although the exterior may not be the most attractive, the interior is fantastic!

The resale value of this vehicle is exceptionally poor. It has experienced more issues than any other car I have owned, and as a result, its resale value has significantly decreased. I cannot recommend the AZTEK to anyone.

Wow, 167,000 miles is quite a journey for my first vehicle! Although it lasted a little over 200,000 miles before I had to give up on her, I had a great experience with it. (I can't tell for sure because of a short in the odometer.) However, there were a couple of shorts and other weird things happening with the electronics. The transmission started to shift hard and slip out of gear on hot days. Despite these issues, I trusted this car with my life and it usually got me from point a to b until a cold winter day. Unfortunately, the heater had gone for some time and finally she overheated and kicked the bed, or so I thought. Luckily, my family mechanic brought her back from the dead. Although it's still rotting in the yard, I have fond memories of my first car.

I recently purchased an Aztec, but unfortunately, I have been experiencing some issues with the brakes, wheel bearings, headlight shift gear, and AC unit. Despite being told that the SUV had passed inspection and was in good working condition, I have found this not to be the case. While these cars can be good if you are able to repair them yourself, they can be quite costly to maintain. Therefore, I would not recommend this vehicle. It is important to note that they stopped making them in 2005, likely due to the fact that they only offer ample space. If you plan on using this vehicle as an everyday car, I would advise against it.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you mentioned having trouble with your heater blowers. That sounds frustrating! Have you considered reaching out to customer support for assistance? It might be helpful to see if they have any suggestions or solutions. Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help!

I have had some negative experiences with Pontiac cars in the past. However, my experience with the Aztec has been particularly disappointing. Despite its low mileage, I have had to spend over $1500 on electrical repairs and have also had issues with its fuel efficiency and suspension. Unfortunately, the Pontiac Factory has not been willing to provide support for these issues. Overall, my experience with the Aztec has been far from satisfactory.
