2004 Pontiac Aztek problems
The Pontiac Aztek is a mid-size crossover SUV marketed by General Motors from model years 2001 until 2005, along with a rebadged variant, the Buick Rendezvous.
As a 5-door crossover with a front engine with front-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive, the Aztek featured a four-speed automatic transmission with a V-6 engine. Marketed by Pontiac as a "sport recreational vehicle," the Aztek used a shortened platform shared with GM's minivans (e.g., the Pontiac Montana) featuring 94 cubic feet of cargo room with its rear seats removed. The design employed conventional rear outswing doors rather than sliding doors, and a split rear tailgate, the lower section formed with seat indentations and cupholders. Other features included a front center console that doubled as a removable cooler, optional rear stereo controls in the cargo area, optional sliding cargo floor with grocery compartments and optional camping package with an attachable tent and air mattress.
The Aztek was noted for its controversial styling. Pulitzer Prize-winning automotive journalist Dan Neil, in naming it one of the 50 worst cars of all time, said the Aztek "violate(d) one of the principal rules of car design: we like cars that look like us. With its multiple eyes and supernumerary nostrils, the Aztek looks deformed and scary, something that dogs bark at and cathedrals employ to ring bells. The shame is, under all that ugliness, there was a useful, competent crossover."

Common 2004 Pontiac Aztek problems
The Pontiac Aztek, released in 2001, was the first official SUV from Pontiac. However, it was met with criticism and a quick end to production in 2005 due to several issues that affected its performance and overall quality.
One of the most common problems with the Pontiac Aztek is transmission pressure control solenoid failure, which may cause erratic shifting. This issue can lead to a less smooth driving experience and may require costly repairs.
Another common problem is intake manifold gaskets that may leak coolant or engine oil. This can result in reduced engine performance and may lead to more severe engine damage if not addressed promptly.
The Aztek's automatic transmission is another area of concern, as it is the only transmission option available for the car, regardless of the model. This may be a drawback for those who prefer manual transmissions or want more control over their driving experience.
The Aztek's design and styling have also been criticized for being uncoordinated and not suitable for off-road adventures, despite early marketing campaigns that promoted it as a rugged, off-road-type vehicle.
Additionally, the battery placement and removal process in the Aztek can be frustrating, as it requires removing the engine fuse box first, turning a simple 30-second job into a more time-consuming task.
The Aztek's first appearance at the Detroit Auto Show was met with a lackluster response, as the crowds were not impressed by its exaggerated and boxy design.
Overall, the Pontiac Aztek has several common problems that may affect its performance and overall quality. These issues, along with the car's styling and design, have contributed to its quick end to production and lack of popularity among car enthusiasts.

I went to the car lot with no intention of buying a vehicle. I test drove a Pontiac Vibe, but it didn't quite meet my expectations. However, when I saw the Aztek, I asked the salesman if I could take it for a spin. I was blown away! I loved it so much that I drove it home, showed it to my wife, and we made a deal in just a few hours. We got a great deal on a FWD model with a moonroof, stereo, A/C, and power everything for under $20k - drive out price! I've driven SUVs that cost twice as much and are far less impressive than the Aztek. It may look a little different, but once you get behind the wheel, you'll be hooked!
-
I hope you're enjoying your new Aztec! It sounds like it's a blast to drive and has plenty of room for all your friends.
-
It's great fun to drive! The interior design is really comfortable, and the little extras make it even more so for both passengers and driver. The drive is quiet, smooth, and comfortable, and the turning radius is even better than I expected. I can't wait to try out the AWD in the snow and ice - I'm sure it won't disappoint!
-
The interior is really cozy. After test driving it, my wife and I stopped looking for any other SUV. It's also very affordable!!!
-
I love the car! It has great pickup, gets good gas mileage, and is a comfortable ride.

I acquired the car quickly without conducting any prior research. However, I am thoroughly enjoying it. One minor improvement would be to remove the loose and clattering removable cooler. Despite having faced several issues and visiting the dealer approximately 8 times, I am confident that GM will take responsibility and provide me with a new car. The car drives well and is spacious enough for my kids.
Bruce Greenholt 2024-05-14
That's a great car, but it seems to use a lot of gas. I'm not sure it gets past 16 miles per gallon.

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with my car. When I first purchased it, I was really excited about it. My son also loved the design and we were both looking forward to the adventures we would have in it. However, I have found that the car requires a lot of maintenance and seems to be in the shop every other month for some new issue. Unfortunately, Pontiac charges for each diagnostic check, as well as the labor and parts. It can be frustrating at times, but I am hopeful that things will improve. Thank you for taking the time to read my message.
