2004 Dodge Neon problems
The Neon is a compact car that was built from in January 1994 until 2005 by the American Chrysler Corporation over two generations. It has a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and came in two-door and four-door sedan body styles. In the United States it was sold as either a Dodge or a Plymouth, while in Europe, Mexico, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Egypt, Australia, South Africa, and South America it was branded as a Chrysler, the Neon was offered in multiple versions and configurations over its production life, which lasted from the 1995 model year until 2005. The Neon nameplate was subsequently resurrected in 2016 for the Dodge Neon, a rebadged variant of Fiat Tipo sedan for the Mexican market.
1991 concept car
The Neon nameplate first appeared as a concept car in 1991 under the Dodge brand. Although radically styled and clearly not production-ready featuring sliding suicide doors, the Neon concept resembled the future production vehicle.
The Neon concept was designed by Chrysler designers who had joined the company from Chrysler's buyout of American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1987.

AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-05-24
- Number Of Injuries: 2
- Crash: 1
- Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
- Summary: ON MAY 24, 2013 I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK WITH ANOTHER EMPLOYEE. WE WERE GOING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH ON A HIGHWAY, IT WAS 12:15 IN THE MORNING, AND IT WAS RAINING. I WAS DRIVING IN THE CENTER LANE WHEN MY PASSENGER YELLED OUT THAT THE SEMI TRUCK NEXT TO US WAS MERGING OVER INTO OUR LANE AND WAS ABOUT TO HIT US. I TRIED TO MOVE OVER INTO THE THIRD, LEFT LANE TO AVOID GETTING HIT BY THE TRUCK, BUT AS SOON AS I DID THE CAR LOST CONTROL. IT STARTED TO FISH TAIL AND ENDED UP HITTING THE CENTER WALL ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE AND THEN GOT SHOT ACROSS THE HIGHWAY AND INTO THE SEMI TRUCK WE WERE TRYING TO AVOID. THE CAR HIT THE SEMI TRUCK AT AN ANGLE SO THE ENTIRE PASSENGERS SIDE WAS HIT AND CRUSHED, INCLUDING PART OF THE FRONT OF THE CAR. I BLACKED OUT AS SOON AS WE HIT BECAUSE MY HEAD HIT THE TOP OF THE PASSENGER'S SIDE DOORWAY. I ONLY KNOW THIS BECAUSE I HAD TWO LARGE GOOSE EGGS ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF MY HEAD AND A WHILE AFTER THE ACCIDENT WE WENT TO GO SEE THE CAR AND A LARGE CHUNK OF MY HAIR WAS HANGING FROM THE DOORWAY. THIS IS WHERE THE SEAT BELT COMPLAINT COMES IN. MY SEAT BELT DID NOT SEIZE UP DURING THE COLLISION AND I SUFFERED SERIOUS INJURIES INCLUDING A CONCUSSION, BROKEN RIB, COLLAPSED LUNG, HOLE IN MY LUNG, AND LACERATED LIVER. MY PASSENGER ALSO SUFFERED EXTREMELY SERIOUS INJURIES INCLUDING CONCUSSION, BOTH LUNG COLLAPSED, MULTIPLE BROKEN RIBS, LACERATED LIVER, BROKEN PELVIS, AND BROKEN HIPS. SHE WAS IN THE HOSPITAL FOR OVER 2 MONTHS AND IS STILL UNABLE TO WALK. I MAKE THIS COMPLAINT FOR THE SEAT BELTS BECAUSE I DO NOT BELIEVE OUR INJURIES WOULD HAVE BEEN AS SERIOUS HAD THEY WORKED PROPERLY. ALSO, THE AIRBAGS SHOULD HAVE GONE OFF AT SOME POINT WITH THE SIDE FRONTAL DAMAGE AT THE VERY LEAST. I AM UNCERTAIN WHETHER MY CAR HAD SIDE AIRBAGS BUT IF THEY DID, THEY DEFINITELY SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED. I WOULD LIKE THIS ISSUE LOOKED INTO AND SOME RESOLVE TO COME FROM IT.

AND SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE E-BRAKE NOW YESTERDAY THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO THE PASSENGERS SIDE. I WAS READING UP ON THE OTHERS THAT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH RECALLS ON THERE BREAKS AND THINK THE 2004 SHOULD ALSO BE LOOKED AT. I HAVE TALKED WITH OTHER NEON OWNERS AND THEY TO HAVE HAD SIMILAR PROBLEMS. I CALLED DODGE AND THEY SAID THEY CAN LOOK UP RECALLS AND MY CAR HAS NOT HAD THAT PROBLEM BUT WE CAN SAVE OUR RECORDS AND IF IT IS A RECALL THEN WE CAN FILE TO BE RE PAID BACK. IDK WHAT ALL IS INVOLVED IN GETTING OR EVEN HAVING A RECALL LOOKED INTO BUT THOUGHT THIS WAS A GOOD START. *TR

- VIN: 1B3ES56C64D
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
- Summary: ABOUT 2 1/2 YEARS AFTER I PURCHASED MY DODGE NEON SXT THE SEAL AT THE BOTTOM OF ALL THE WINDOWS BEGAN TO DRY UP, CRACK, AND FALL OFF. AT THIS POINT I BARELY HAVE ANY SEAL IN BETWEEN ALL 4 OF MY CAR WINDOWS AND THE CAR DOOR. WATER HAS GONE DOWN INTO MY DOOR AND I'M AFRAID THAT IT WILL SOON AFFECT THE ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT IN THE DOOR. MY MAIN CONCERNS ARE THE CONTROLS FOR ADJUSTING MY MIRRORS, MY WINDOW CONTROLS, AND MY DOOR LOCK. I HAVE NEVER SEEN A CAR'S SEAL BASICALLY DRY ROT AND FALL OFF OF A CAR STARTING SO EARLY. I WOULD EXPECT IT TO START HAPPENING NOW THAT I'VE HAD THE CAR 8-9 YEARS, BUT NOT TO THIS EXTENT. *TR
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-02-15
- VIN: 1B3ES56C64D

I WAS ABLE TO PUSH IT BACK INTO PLACE AND THOUGHT EVERYTHING WAS FINE. THEN A MONTH LATER IT RAINED AND I HAVE SEVERE WATER DAMAGE TO MY TRUNK LINING AND IT SMELLS LIKE MILDEW MIXED WITH MOLD. I KNOW IN PREVIOUS MODELS THAT WHEN THIS STARTS HAPPENING THE BACK LIGHTS START TO FILL WITH WATER AND CAN SHORT THE FUSES. AS OF RIGHT NOW I DON'T HAVE THE LIGHT PROBLEM BUT I DO HAVE LARGE AREAS WHERE MY TRUNK LINING ARE WARPED INWARDS AND IT WILL NOT GO BACK INTO PLACE. *TR
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-08-19
- VIN: 1B3ES56C64D
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY, AND I STARTED TO HEAR A STRANGE THUD SOUND OVER AND OVER. I 500 MILES FROM HOME AND FOUND THE NEXT GAS STATION TO PULL INTO. THE RUBBER SEAL THAT IS GLUED IN BETWEEN THE TOP OF MY WINDSHIELD WHERE IT MEETS THE CAR FRAME WAS COMING UNDONE. I TRIED STICKING IT BACK IN THERE AND SITTING IN THE SHADE TO LET THE GLUE/TAR SET. WHEN I DROVE ABOUT 100 MORE MILES THE THUD GOT LOUDER AND LOUDER AND MORE FREQUENT. THEN ALL THE SUDDEN BEFORE I COULD STOP ANYWHERE THE RUBBER SEAL FLEW OFF OF MY CAR. THE FORCE FROM IT FLYING OFF, THE SPEED (ONLY 65 MPH), AND THE WIND SPEED (NOT HIGH) CAUSED MY CAR TO JERK INTO THE LANE NEXT TO ME. LUCKILY THE HIGHWAY I WAS ON WASN'T PACKED SO NO ONE WAS IN THE LANE I WAS PULLED INTO. *TR
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-07-23

IT WAS REVVING UP TO 3200 RPM ATG 40 MPH I HAD TO PULL BY THE SIDE OF THE ROAD ALL OF A SUDDEN I SAW A LEAK BEHIND THE PLATE ON THE TRANSMISSION THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON TOO BAD. I WAS WONDERING IF THERE IS ANY RECALL ON THIS CAR BECAUSE I CAN SEE A LOT OF COMPLAINS FROM OTHER INDIVIDUALS ON HERE. THERE ARE A LOT OF SAFETY ISSUES REGARDING THE NEONS REVVING UP OR ACCELERATING ON IT'S OWN. *TR

Congratulations on your first car purchase! It sounds like you made a fantastic decision in buying your neon from the original owner. After searching for two months, you found a car that was both affordable and high-quality. The previous owner clearly took great care of it, as it still looks fantastic and runs very well. It's great that you only have to spend $25 on a gas fill up, and the sound system with subwoofers and an amp in the trunk sounds amazing. The spoiler and ground effects definitely make it stand out and attract a lot of attention. Overall, it seems like you made a wise choice with a car that will last you a long time.
-
It's great to hear that your car has been running smoothly for almost four years now! Other than gas and oil, you've only had to replace a set of tires, spark plugs, and a battery. With just over 59,000 miles, it still runs like new. It's possible that dollar for dollar, this may be the best car sold in the U.S. in 2004.
-
The best thing about this car is that it's a sleeper. It may look like a neon, but it has the power of a race-tuned machine. It can go from 0-60 in just 5.6 seconds, and it also has great gas mileage if you keep your foot off the gas. Overall, it's a really good car.
-
I bought this car without seeing it in person, based on the recommendation of Mopar expert Rick Ehrenberg. It was a big leap of faith, but it paid off BIG TIME. I have never regretted my decision, except for maybe upgrading to Goodyear Asymmetric tires. While the car is now faster in corners, the fun factor has diminished slightly, and I now need to drive at extremely dangerous speeds to get the same thrill. However, the car can handle full throttle upshifts without any problems, and the warranty is wonderful. I did have a minor turbo problem, but the complete assembly was replaced under warranty. I also experienced worn syncros, likely due to my own excessive exuberance and fatigue, but the warranty covered a full rebuild. The best part? The total cost of this service was only $100! The CV joints remain in good condition despite my abuse.

I traded in my 93 Probe GT for a yellow SXT Neon auto and I absolutely love it! It's my little put-put wagon. I'm a 19-year-old male and I bought it because it's practical and there are still plenty of aftermarket parts to make it a quick little yellow bumblebee. I would have preferred the manual and R/T model, but it was all I could afford.

Although it may have been enjoyable to drive initially, this car is unfortunately not reliable in the long run. After reaching around 100,000 kms, various components such as the tire rod, cam shaft sensor, and o2 sensor began to fail. As a result, I experienced numerous issues and would not recommend this car to anyone. It may be wise to consider a Honda instead.

The value depreciation on this car is significant. Despite purchasing it for 10 grand a year ago, it is now worth only 4 grand at most, even in excellent condition. Unfortunately, these cars are known to fall apart easily, and I have had to spend a lot of money to keep it running. While my previous car, a 1998 Honda Civic Coupe, was six years older, it required far less maintenance. I would not recommend purchasing this car, as it has been a frustrating and costly experience for me. Thank you for considering my experience with this vehicle.

Hey there! I wanted to share my experience with my Dodge Neon. When I first got it with about 45,000 miles, I had a few small issues, but thankfully they were all covered under warranty and fixed for free. Recently, I was in a car accident and my car rolled into a ditch. Thanks to the strong auto frame of the car, I was able to walk away completely unhurt. It's amazing how well it held up even with over 110,000 miles on it and no present problems. Overall, I'm really grateful for this car and how it kept me safe.

I purchased my car brand new in 2004. Unfortunately, at around 30,000 Km, the engine started to flutter and die due to a computer problem. Although it was a frustrating experience, I was able to get it fixed. However, I did notice that the car started to consume more gas than usual. At around 80,000 Km, I had to replace the cam shaft sensor, which was not covered under warranty. One thing I have noticed is that the blind spots are quite large, making it difficult to see when changing lanes or approaching intersections and crosswalks. Despite this, I always approach these situations with caution to ensure my safety and the safety of others. Additionally, the 6-disc changer is located in an inconvenient spot, so I always make sure to load up my music before leaving my driveway.

Hi there! It's great to hear about your experience with your Neon. Although you didn't get to order it exactly how you wanted, it sounds like you still did pretty well with your purchase. It's awesome that you've been able to take it on several road trips and found it to be a great highway car (minus a bit of road noise). Driving in the snow can be a bit tricky, but it sounds like you've got it figured out with some excellent tires! While you find the engine a bit weak, it's great to hear that it's still reliable. It's always a bit concerning when a car makes strange noises, but thankfully you were able to get it sorted out with the help of an excellent mechanic. Here's to another 70K in your trusty little car!
