2000 Oldsmobile Silhouette problems
The Oldsmobile Silhouette is a minivan manufactured by General Motors for model years 1990–2004 over two generations.
Production ended when General Motors discontinued its Oldsmobile brand in 2004. GM continued to market badge-engineered variants of the U-body minivans, the Saturn Relay and the Buick Terraza for MY2005.
Background
General Motors' first attempt at producing a minivan to compete with the Chrysler minivans, the rear wheel drive, truck-based Chevrolet Astro and its twin, the GMC Safari failed to compete strongly against Chrysler's dominance in the minivan market in the 1980s. The 1990 Oldsmobile Silhouette and its sibling models, sold more successfully than the Astro/Safari predecessors.
First shown to the public in 1986, the Pontiac Trans Sport concept car featured futuristic styling, individually removable bucket seats with built-in stereo speakers, a gull-wing rear passenger door and extensive use of glass including a glass-paneled roof.
The Trans Sport was approved for production without the gullwing door and the glass roof. Chevrolet and Oldsmobile received production vehicles based on the Trans Sport with the Lumina APV and Silhouette respectively. While the Pontiac Trans Sport was targeted at sport- and style-oriented buyers, the Lumina was the value offering and the Silhouette targeted premium markets, competing with the Chrysler Town & Country.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

- VIN: 1GHDX03E7YD
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 OLDSMOBILE SILHOUETTE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE REFUELING THE VEHICLE, FUEL STARTED POURING OUT OF THE FILLER NECK. THE CONTACT STATED THAT REFUELING THE VEHICLE TOOK AN EXTENDED AMOUNT OF TIME TO ACCOMPLISH. ADDITIONALLY, THERE WERE SEVERAL UNKNOWN WARNING LIGHTS FLASHING ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE O-RING AND RETAINER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 154,000.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

- VIN: 1GHDX13E3YD
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 OLDSMOBILE SILHOUETTE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 10 MPH THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE FAILURE OCCURED A COUPLE OF TIMES PRIOR. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. STRUCTURE,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-12-14
- VIN: 1GHDX03EXYD
- Components: STRUCTURE,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
- Summary: POWER SLIDING DOOR LATCH ACTUATOR FAILURE. LATCH IS STUCK IN OPEN POSITION, WILL NOT LATCH. EXACT SAME PROBLEM AS DESCRIBED IN PREVIOUS RECALLS NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 01V067000 AND NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 01V264000. OLDSMOBILE STATES VEHICLE HAS BEEN REPAIRED UNDER THE RECALL ALREADY IN 2002. I PURCHASED USED WITH LOW MILES (AROUND 70K) IN 2009. VEHICLE HAS BEEN METICULOUSLY MAINTAINED AND IS IN CLOSE TO SHOWROOM CONDITION AS YOU COULD FIND FOR A 2000. OLDSMOBILE STATES THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE REPAIR TO CONSIDER ANY ONGOING RECALLS. OLDSMOBILE INFORMS ME THAT WITH A VEHICLE OF THIS AGE, REGARDLESS OF MILEAGE OR CONDITION, MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL PARTS SHOULD BE EXPECTED TO FAIL. SOMEHOW, I DON'T CONSIDER MY DOOR FLYING OPEN GOING DOWN THE ROAD TO BE JUST A MINOR FAILURE OR INCONVENIENCE. IT IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE, ONE THAT HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED ENOUGH THAT THERE WAS AN INITIAL RECALL, THEN A SECOND RECALL TO FIX THE FIRST RECALL. OBVIOUSLY, THIS WAS A BAND AID REPAIR. I GOT MOST OF THE SERVICE RECORDS FROM THE FIRST TWO OWNERS. THIS VEHICLE WAS USED MOSTLY BY AN OLDER COUPLE AND THE SLIDING DOOR HAS MUCH LOWER THAN AVERAGE USE FOR A 100,000 MILE CAR. THERE ARE NOT THAT MANY OF THESE GM MINVANS ON THE ROAD, AND AS A RESULT THE ABSOLUTE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS MIGHT BE LOW. IT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED THAT GM DID NOT PERFORM A SUFFICIENT REPAIR AND DID JUST ENOUGH TO GET BY. OLDSMOBILE TOLD ME THAT THE REPAIR AT THIS POINT IS UP TO THE CUSTOMER. WHAT WILL IT TAKE FOR THIS RECALL TO BE REVIEWED? FORTUNATELY NO ONE WAS IN MY CAPTAIN'S CHAIR WHEN OUR DOOR FLEW OPEN. WILL SOMEONE HAVE TO BE KILLED OR RUN OVER FOR THIS TO BE REVIEWED? *TR

THE CONSUMER STATED THE REMOTE KEY FOB WAS BARELY FUNCTIONALLY. UPDATED 11/28/11

- Summary: I HAVE A 2000 OLDS INTRIGUE THAT MY MOTHER LEFT TO ME WHEN SHE PASSED AWAY IN 2002. I ALSO JUST PURCHASED A USED 2001 PONTIAC GRAND AM FOR MY TEENAGED SON. BOTH OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE THE TURN SIGNAL/MULTI-FUNCTION SWITCH MALFUNCTION. I CALLED THE 1800 NUMBERS ASSOCIATED WITH THE RECALL (ON THIS SITE) AND WAS TOLD THAT SINCE IT WAS NOT A CURRENT RECALL, I COULD NOT HAVE THE SWITCHES REPAIRED AS PART OF THE RECALL. - Summary: I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE RADIO STOPPED WORKING. I THOUGHT THAT A FUSE HAD BLOWN (WHICH IT DID) SO I REPLACED IT. ABOUT 20 MILES DOWN THE ROAD IT DID IT AGAIN. WHEN I STOPPED AT MY DESTINATION I REALIZED THAT THE FUSE THAT WAS CONTINUALLY BLOWING CONTROLLED MY RADIO, THE ACTUATOR MODULE OF THE POWER SLIDING DOOR, THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM AND THE REMOTE CONTROL FOR LOCKING AND UNLOCKING MY DOORS. I MANAGED TO NARROW IT DOWN TO THE ACTUATOR MODULE THAT WAS CAUSING THE PROBLEM. I LOCKED MY MOTOR FOR THE DOOR AND HAVEN'T HAD A PROBLEM WITH IT SINCE. I GOT A FAX FROM GM AND IT SHOWS THAT THE ACUATOR MODULE HAS BEEN REPLACED 3-4 TIMES BEFORE THE CAR EVEN HAD 8500 MILES ON THE CAR. THE CABLE HAS BEEN ADJUSTED AS WELL FOR THE SAME DOOR. I DIDN'T SEE ANY RECALLS ON THE ACTUATOR ITSELF. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO AT THIS POINT. I WOULD APPRIECIATE ANY FEED BACK AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: FIRST, WHAT HAPPENED TO ODI #'S 563553 AND 767723? THESE WERE IN THE COMPLAINT DATABASE IN 2002 BUT DO NOT SHOW UP ON THE COMPLAINT SEARCH TODAY. AS REPORTED IN 2002, MY VEHICLE AGAIN SHUT DOWN WITHOUT WARNING WHILE DRIVING IN TRAFFICE AT 40+ MPH - ENGINE QUIT, MESSAGES "CHECK ENGINE", "LOW FUEL", AND 'SECURITY" APPEARED ON THE CONSOLE IN ROTATION, LASTING A FEW SECONDS EACH. THE "SECURITY" MESSAGE IMPLIES THAT THE PROGRAMMABLE KEY SYSTEM COES NOT RECOGNIZE THE KEY, THOUGH IT IS THE ORIGINAL GIVEN TO US AT TIME OF PURCHASE IN 2000. THE CAR SUDDENLY DECELERATED IN TRAFFIC WITHOUT BRAKELIGHTS, DUE TO THE DEAD ENGINE WITH TRANSMISSION STILL ENGAGED. IN 2002, THIS HAPPENED THREE TIMES BEFORE THE DEALER FOUND A FIX FOR THE PROBLEM, THE THIRD TIME RESULTING IN A COLLISION OF TWO VEHICLES TRYING TO AVOID ME WHEN MY CAR SUDDENLY DECELERATED. THIS TIME THERE WAS NO PROPERTY DAMAGE, BUT NO SECURITY SYSTEM SHOULD EVER SHUT DOWN A VEHICLE ONCE IT IS IN MOTION.

Except for problems with the rear wiper, you'll be happy to know that we haven't had to make any major repairs. While some of the interior trim may be a little on the cheap side for the top of the line Oldsmobiles, I absolutely love my van and I'm hoping it lasts for a good while.

This car is really easy to drive. It's so spacious that my wife and I both enjoy driving it. It's perfect for traveling, especially with the back seats removed. Since I'm retired, I get to travel a lot and this car has been a great companion. The only thing we wish it had was a dual air/heat system. Living in the northeast, we've noticed that cold air comes in around the front doors where the latches are. On really cold days, my wife even covers herself with a blanket to stay warm.

Bought second hand last year with 100k miles. Was in excellent condition and well taken care of. Had zero problems so far, and my wife is completely satisfied. Previously we owned a '96 Ford Windstar, and this van is far superior. Got a great deal ($5,700) and I hope it will last a couple more years.

I've owned this van for over 2 years and have had no problems, except for the automatic sliding door which was promptly fixed by the dealer. It gets good gas mileage for a large vehicle and I would definitely buy another. It's a shame that GM is dropping the OLDS nameplate.

I purchased this van used and it was nice and loaded with leather captain seats and a VCR. It's very comfortable and stylish. Although I've had some front end work done and had to replace some sensors, fix some back shock problems, and deal with a driver window recall on the sliding side door, as well as some head gasket leakage and cylinder head and radiator coolant problems, I still love driving it. The only downside is that the gas mileage could be better.

Our Oldsmobile Silhouette has been a reliable car for us. Although we have had a few minor issues, such as the passenger side window needing to be serviced a couple of times and the VCR needing repair, overall the engine has always run smoothly. We did have to replace the water pump at 88,000 miles, and we are currently experiencing some issues with the fuel gauge and thermostat. Despite these challenges, we have enjoyed our time with this car and appreciate its dependability.

We purchased our Silhouette for its creature comforts, but unfortunately, many of them have failed us since. Although it has 60,000 miles on it, the rear air and driver's heated seat no longer work. We have had to replace the rear air shocks, which was not cheap, and the battery. Additionally, the original spec tires were gone by 40,000 miles. However, it always starts, has buttery smooth leather seats, a comfortable ride, and adequate power (but not overwhelming). I particularly enjoy the good sounding audio system and genuine 7 passenger seating.

Our 2000 Extended Premier Edition Silhouette with all the leather and video toys is a comfortable and impressive ride. Although the car has required some repairs on the brakes and manifold, it still provides a smooth driving experience. The front end has been aligned three times, but we are still working on improving the tire wear. As someone who is not used to front wheel drive cars, I have found it to be a bit of a challenge, but the gas mileage for this large van is fantastic. My wife loves running the AC and we are both very happy with the overall experience.

We purchased a new 2000 model and everything was great until we hit 67,000 miles. Unfortunately, we experienced some issues such as a brand new transmission, brake failure (while my wife and kids were in the van), oxygen sensor problems, issues with the air conditioner, problems with the driver's window motor, both front tie rods, manifold intake valve, and a radiator leak. If you are considering buying an American vehicle (which I personally will not do again), it is advisable to purchase an extended warranty. Thankfully, we had the foresight to do so. In total, we have spent over $7,000 on repairs for this van, which is only worth around $10,000.

My Oldsmobile Silhouette experienced constant electrical problems. Despite a service memo acknowledging the design issue, GM refused to take responsibility for the defective intake manifold gasket problem. It is clear that such issues contributed to the decline of Oldsmobile and the poor sales of GM.
