2002 Oldsmobile Silhouette problems

oldsmobile logo

The Oldsmobile Silhouette is a minivan manufactured by General Motors for model years 1990–2004 over two generations.

Production ended when General Motors discontinued its Oldsmobile brand in 2004. GM continued to market badge-engineered variants of the U-body minivans, the Saturn Relay and the Buick Terraza for MY2005.

Background

General Motors' first attempt at producing a minivan to compete with the Chrysler minivans, the rear wheel drive, truck-based Chevrolet Astro and its twin, the GMC Safari failed to compete strongly against Chrysler's dominance in the minivan market in the 1980s. The 1990 Oldsmobile Silhouette and its sibling models, sold more successfully than the Astro/Safari predecessors.

First shown to the public in 1986, the Pontiac Trans Sport concept car featured futuristic styling, individually removable bucket seats with built-in stereo speakers, a gull-wing rear passenger door and extensive use of glass including a glass-paneled roof.

The Trans Sport was approved for production without the gullwing door and the glass roof. Chevrolet and Oldsmobile received production vehicles based on the Trans Sport with the Lumina APV and Silhouette respectively. While the Pontiac Trans Sport was targeted at sport- and style-oriented buyers, the Lumina was the value offering and the Silhouette targeted premium markets, competing with the Chrysler Town & Country.

Common 2002 Oldsmobile Silhouette problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2002 Oldsmobile Silhouette, several common problems have been reported:

  • Transmission Failure: Transmission issues have been a concern for some Oldsmobile Silhouette owners. The transmission can fail, leading to difficulties in shifting gears smoothly. This problem can manifest as hard shifting into gears, affecting the overall driving experience and potentially requiring transmission repairs or replacements.
  • Cooling System Leaks: Leakage in the cooling system has been reported by owners of the 2002 Oldsmobile Silhouette. Visible signs of coolant leaks around the water pump area and wet components indicate potential cooling system issues. The presence of coolant in areas where it shouldn't be, coupled with the need for frequent coolant refills, suggests a leak within the cooling system that requires inspection and repair to prevent overheating and engine damage .

These common problems with the 2002 Oldsmobile Silhouette highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any signs of issues to ensure the longevity and performance of the vehicle.

  • Components: SUSPENSION,SERVICE BRAKES, AIR,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN,VISIBILITY,STRUCTURE,TIRES,SEATS,EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: 2002 SILHOUETTE, 39000 MILES. FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS FAILED. HAD REPAIRED, WITHIN 50 MILES AFTER PICKING UP FROM DEALERSHIP, THERE WAS A GRINDING WHEN TURNING RIGHT. BOTH HEATED SEATS DIDN'T HEAT. DRIVER'S SIDE WINDOW OPERATED EXTREMELY SLOW. INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET NEEDED REPLACEMENT!, $1000!, 39000 MILES FOLKS! AIR SUSPENSION DID NOT OPERATE CRACKLED. POWER DOORS DID NOT OPEN WHEN SOMETHING GOT IN THE WAY. BRUISED SHOULDER BECAUSE OF THIS. PREMATURE TIRE WEAR, REPLACED TIRES AT 30,000 MILES. ALL SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE DONE. STORED IN A GARAGE MORE HIGHWAY MILES THAN CITY. HOW DID GM WANT TO HELP ME? DEALER DID PAPERWORK WHEN PURCHASING, TRIED TO PUSH OFF A CHEAPER MODEL ON AN ELDERLY WOMEN, AND CHANGED THE PROMISED 5 YEAR WARRANTY TO A 3 YEAR WARRANTY. MOTHER WAS JUST SO HAPPY SHE GOT THE RIGHT VEHICLE TO TAKE HOME, SHE NEVER NOTICED THE CHANGE IN THE WARRANTY. TRIED TO WORK WITH THE DEALER ON REPAIRS SINCE THERE WERE ONLY 39000 MILES, AND WE GOT A 'GEE, REALLY SORRY MA'AM, I UNDERSTOOD, BUT THERE WASN'T ANYTHING WE COULD DO ABOUT IT. WENT TO THE GM SERVICE LINE, AND DID NOT GET ANY HELP THERE EITHER, BUT SHE HAD A REAL PURDY FIRST NAME! SEEMED TO ME THESE WERE ALL RECURRING PREMATURE KNOWN FAILURES , YET GM DID NOT CARE TO STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT! IT WAS A SHAME THEY PUSHED THE 5 YEAR WARRANTY SO EXTENSIVELY WHEN THEY HAD ALL THESE VEHICLES ON THEIR LOTS. PEOPLE, WE'VE BEEN HAD. I GREW UP IN OLDSMOBILE, BUT THE MORE I READ ABOUT GM - THE MORE LIKELY I AM TO BUY TOYOTA! THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT I FOUND A DEALER (NOT CLOSE TO HOME THOUGH) THAT WAS WILLING TO AT LEAST REPAIR THE FIRST SET OF WHEEL BEARINGS FOR $100. GOT THAT ON MY OWN, NOT THROUGH GM SERVICE HELP. I JUST HOPE THEY WILL BE AS NICE FOR THE NEXT SET OF WHEEL BEARINGS THAT NEED REPLACEMENT AND FOR THE GASKET THAT WAS JUST DISCOVERED. STILL WAITING TO HEAR FROM GM ON THE OTHER ISSUES. (NOT AS AN IMMEDIATE NEED AS THE WHEEL BEARINGS) I'M NOT HOLDING MY BREATH.*AK

We had some issues with the van that required continuous repairs. For instance, the air compressor leaked, which caused the air conditioner to malfunction, and we had to spend $3k on repairs. Additionally, the rear lights frequently went out, and we had to replace the fuses constantly. We also had trouble with the front lights, which did not seal well even after replacing the covers, so we had to replace the headlights monthly. The sliding doors sometimes opened on their own, even with the vehicle turned off. Unfortunately, the engine blew at 90k miles, which cost us $6k to repair. We also had to replace the rotors and wheel bearings three times. Furthermore, the traction system needed to be repaired, and the CD player would jam when changing CDs. We experienced constant electronic malfunctions. In an accident, the van rolled at 40mph and both sliding doors popped open during the roll, causing all the windows to break. This was an extremely unsafe situation. Overall, we found the vehicle to be unreliable.

With 2 young children, we thought we needed a minivan, but unfortunately this one didn't meet our expectations. The heated seats stopped working within the first 3 months, and we had to replace the fan control resistor at 5 months. Additionally, the A/C condenser cracked at 70K miles and the intake gasket started leaking at 80K. Overall, the build quality was poor and it was the noisiest highway vehicle I've driven since my '76 K5 Blazer.

I purchased this vehicle brand new in 2002 for over $35,000. Although it is a nice looking van with AWD, I have decided to part ways with it after accumulating 50,000 miles. Unfortunately, I have had to replace the wheel bearings twice and the front seat heater twice. Currently, the rear gasket needs to be replaced at a cost of $900. Despite the low mileage, GM has declined to assist with the repair. In contrast, my 1997 Dodge Caravan with 105,000 miles has only required routine maintenance. I plan to have the necessary repairs done and then trade in the vehicle for a non-GM model. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend purchasing a GM and I personally will not be buying one again.

This car was alright for a few months, but unfortunately, a long string of small failures started to occur. Recently, the intake manifold gasket failed and almost destroyed the engine. It's disappointing to learn that GM has known about these bad gaskets for years and chose not to inform anyone. However, the service department secretary was able to diagnose my problem as soon as I walked in, which was helpful. It seems that the recall for the 3.4L engine would cost more than GM has in the bank, which is why they won't do it. I hope that GM takes responsibility for their mistakes and works to improve their vehicles in the future.

You were quite fortunate to have bought this during a promotion where GM was selling it with 60,000 mile, 60 month warranties. However, it seems like you have had some issues with the car. The seat warmers constantly failed, one of the power slide doors failed, and the rear tail lights constantly burned out. It's disappointing that GM refuses to admit a flaw. Even the DVD remote is a bit of a letdown as it constantly runs down the battery. Hopefully, you have plenty of batteries and a screwdriver to deal with this.

We absolutely love our first van, even though we were initially hesitant coming from a sports sedan. The Olds/GM's are definitely strong contenders in our opinion. Here are some of the things we love about it:nn- The interior is spacious and comfortable, designed by Americans for American-sized people.n- The van comes with tons of features that we find really useful.n- Despite its great fuel mileage, the van has plenty of power and can even spin the wheels on dry pavement.n- The transmission is strong, smooth, and reliable, unlike some other brands that have had problems.n- With 16

My Oldsmobile Silhouette Premiere had 10,400 miles on it when we purchased it. Unfortunately, at 30,000 miles, we started experiencing some issues. First, the AC condenser leaked freon, then we had to have the rear brakes replaced due to a rock between the pad and rotor (not a warranty item). Lastly, the head gaskets started to leak at less than 39,000 miles, which was a costly $1,700 job. As a long-time GM owner, I have never experienced these issues with other cars, and it is causing me to lose faith in the GM brand. I hope GM will consider using higher quality gaskets in the future.

This is a very flexible vehicle with flip and fold seats. The powertrain is responsive and gets good mileage when compared to other makes. I have only had minor warranty work done, such as a broken cupholder and tailgate strap.

Awesome van to drive. I'm glad to hear that you find it comfortable! It's great to know that you haven't had any problems so far.

  5. Lorenz Ratke 2024-09-28

I'm glad to hear that you were pleasantly surprised by the Silhouette! While there's nothing wrong with our 99, the Silhouette offers a luxurious experience that you won't find in the Odyssey. Plus, it comes with many features that are unavailable on the Honda.
