2001 Oldsmobile Silhouette problems
The Oldsmobile Silhouette is a minivan manufactured by General Motors for model years 1990–2004 over two generations.
Production ended when General Motors discontinued its Oldsmobile brand in 2004. GM continued to market badge-engineered variants of the U-body minivans, the Saturn Relay and the Buick Terraza for MY2005.
Background
General Motors' first attempt at producing a minivan to compete with the Chrysler minivans, the rear wheel drive, truck-based Chevrolet Astro and its twin, the GMC Safari failed to compete strongly against Chrysler's dominance in the minivan market in the 1980s. The 1990 Oldsmobile Silhouette and its sibling models, sold more successfully than the Astro/Safari predecessors.
First shown to the public in 1986, the Pontiac Trans Sport concept car featured futuristic styling, individually removable bucket seats with built-in stereo speakers, a gull-wing rear passenger door and extensive use of glass including a glass-paneled roof.
The Trans Sport was approved for production without the gullwing door and the glass roof. Chevrolet and Oldsmobile received production vehicles based on the Trans Sport with the Lumina APV and Silhouette respectively. While the Pontiac Trans Sport was targeted at sport- and style-oriented buyers, the Lumina was the value offering and the Silhouette targeted premium markets, competing with the Chrysler Town & Country.

Common 2001 Oldsmobile Silhouette problems
The Oldsmobile Silhouette, a minivan produced by General Motors, has been known to have several common problems, particularly in the 2001 model year. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on car owner complaints:
- Leaking Water Pump: A leaking water pump can cause coolant loss and lead to overheating. This issue has been reported by many owners of the 2001 Oldsmobile Silhouette. If the water pump is leaking, it may need to be replaced to prevent further damage to the engine.
- Engine and Transmission Problems: Some owners have reported issues with the engine and transmission, such as whining and shifting problems. These issues can affect the overall performance and drivability of the vehicle. In some cases, the problem may be caused by a faulty sensor or a vacuum issue, and replacing the throttle position sensor (TPS) or cleaning the throttle body may not solve the problem. A bad sensor may be the culprit, and further diagnosis may be required to identify and fix the issue.
- Vibration Driving Above 40 mph: Some owners have reported a vibration problem when driving above 40 mph. This issue may be caused by a problem with the CV joints, and having them checked may help identify the problem. The vibration may be more pronounced on left turn curves, going up hills, and with heavier loads.
- Electrical System Problems: Several owners have reported problems with the electrical system, such as short circuits and malfunctioning features. These issues can be difficult to diagnose and may require extensive repairs. Some owners have reported problems with the power doors, heated seats, dash and steering wheel lights, and other electrical components. These issues can be costly to fix and may affect the overall reliability of the vehicle.
- Overheating Problems: Overheating is a common problem in the 2001 Oldsmobile Silhouette, and it can be caused by a variety of issues, such as a bad water pump, a leaking radiator, or a faulty thermostat. If the vehicle is overheating, it may need to be taken to a mechanic for further diagnosis and repair .
In summary, the 2001 Oldsmobile Silhouette has several common problems, including leaking water pumps, engine and transmission issues, vibration problems, electrical system problems, and overheating issues. These problems can be costly to fix and may affect the overall reliability and performance of the vehicle. If you own a 2001 Oldsmobile Silhouette, it is important to be aware of these common issues and to address them promptly to prevent further damage to the vehicle.

- Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
- Summary: MY COMPLAINT IS THE FACT THAT COMPANIES NEED TO TRACK DOWN ANY OWNER OF A VEHICLE THAT THEIR COMPANY MAKES. MY DAD PURCHASED THIS OLDSMOBILE VAN, IT WAS A USED VEHICLE, HE DID NOT REALIZE THAT THERE HAD BEEN RECALLS FOR PROBLEMS WITH THE SEAT BELTS, AND AIR BAGS. I SHARED A MAIL BOX WITH HIM, AND I GOT THE MAIL EVERY DAY, SO I KNOW HE NEVER RECEIVED ANY INFO ON THIS. IN 2010 MY DAD WAS INVOLVED IN A WRECK THAT WAS NOT HIS FAULT, IF YOU LOOKED AT THE VEHICLE IT WAS NOT EVEN AS BAD AS SOME YOU SEE, BUT IT WAS HIS FRONT END THAT WAS HIT STRAIGHT ON. MY DAD DID NOT LIVE, HE DIED THE NEXT DAY. THE PERSON THERE ON THE SCENE TOLD ME THAT WHILE HE WAS WEARING HIS SEAT BELT IT HADN'T APPEARED TO HAVE HELD HIM, AND UNSURE IF THE AIR BAG COMPLETELY INFLATED. HE WAS THE ONLY FAMILY I HAD LEFT, NO PARENTS, NO GRANDPARENTS, NO SIBLINGS, AND I CAN'T HELP BUT THINK IT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED, AND I COULD STILL HAVE HIM HERE WITH ME, IF HE WAS ONLY NOTIFIED THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM. I DON'T WANT OTHERS TO GO THROUGH WHAT I HAVE. THE NEUROSURGEON COULD NOT BELIEVE THE SEVERITY OF HIS INJURIES IN COMPARISON TO OTHER ACCIDENTS, HIS WERE TRAUMATIC, HE HAD A SEVERE BRAIN INJURY, AND CRUSHED CHEST INJURIES, WHICH GOES RIGHT ALONG WITH THE FACT THAT THE BELT NOR BAG DID NOT WORK RIGHT, AND HE FELT THE FULL FORCE OF THE STEERING WHEEL.

I have owned this vehicle for 1 1/2 years and I am very satisfied with it. Although I have experienced some issues with windshield visibility during rain, I have sought assistance from dealers and Olds, but the greasy appearing circles in the line of sight persist. However, overall, the vehicle is excellent, providing ample room, comfort, and reliability, as evidenced by three successful cross-country trips. The van has proven to be a durable and dependable mode of transportation.

We're happy to report that our van has clocked up an impressive 167,000 miles and we've had no major issues with it. We did have to get the AC fixed at 112,000 miles and the rear lights, including the back-up sensors, went bad at 125,000 miles. However, we were able to source the parts we needed from a junk yard and everything is still running smoothly.

The transmission failed at 35k, but I had it replaced by a GM dealer. It's running smoothly now, although it cost me $3500.

This is our second Silhouette and both have been trouble free. It's great to hear that it cruises at 75 on the freeway and is very quiet. Additionally, the seats come out quite easily for lots of storage room.

You did a great job describing the vehicle's features! The handling is good, the transmission shifting is smooth, and it has good power on hills and open roads. I also appreciate the nice layout of seats and equipment.

Although my Silhouette has been great until the transmission failed at 31000 miles, I am confident that Oldsmobile and General Motors will take responsibility and fix the issue. Despite the multiple visits to the garage prior to the failure, I trust that they will resolve the problem and ensure that my vehicle runs smoothly again.

We recently traded in our car after owning it for almost 4 years. Although we encountered a few issues along the way, such as the A/C going out 20,000 miles after the expiration of the 60,000 mile warranty (which cost $850 to repair), intermittent problems with the power door, and the horn sounding when it rained, the service department at the dealership was able to resolve the issues. The front cupholder was a bit flimsy and came out a few times, causing a bit of a mess, but overall we enjoyed our time with the car.

Hey there! Have you considered selling your van before it reaches 65,000 miles? Unfortunately, it seems like you've had a few issues with it recently, such as the intake gasket, transmission, and head gasket. That's definitely a lot to deal with in just one year.

I had a 1999 Silhouette that experienced transmission problems. Recently, I was stopped at a traffic light and when I attempted to take off, the transmission slipped badly and then grabbed. I took the vehicle to the dealer who found planetary gear pieces in the bottom of the transmission pan. I am disappointed with my experience and hesitant to purchase another GM vehicle.
