Oldsmobile Silhouette problems

The Oldsmobile Silhouette is a minivan manufactured by General Motors for model years 1990–2004 over two generations.
Production ended when General Motors discontinued its Oldsmobile brand in 2004. GM continued to market badge-engineered variants of the U-body minivans, the Saturn Relay and the Buick Terraza for MY2005.
Background
General Motors' first attempt at producing a minivan to compete with the Chrysler minivans, the rear wheel drive, truck-based Chevrolet Astro and its twin, the GMC Safari failed to compete strongly against Chrysler's dominance in the minivan market in the 1980s. The 1990 Oldsmobile Silhouette and its sibling models, sold more successfully than the Astro/Safari predecessors.
First shown to the public in 1986, the Pontiac Trans Sport concept car featured futuristic styling, individually removable bucket seats with built-in stereo speakers, a gull-wing rear passenger door and extensive use of glass including a glass-paneled roof.
The Trans Sport was approved for production without the gullwing door and the glass roof. Chevrolet and Oldsmobile received production vehicles based on the Trans Sport with the Lumina APV and Silhouette respectively. While the Pontiac Trans Sport was targeted at sport- and style-oriented buyers, the Lumina was the value offering and the Silhouette targeted premium markets, competing with the Chrysler Town & Country.

- Summary: MY 10 YEAR OLD NIECE ATTEMPTED TO OPEN THE POWER SLIDING DOOR ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF OUR 2004 OLDSMOBILE SILHOUETTE OUTSIDE THE MALL. THE MOTOR WAS ALREADY RUNNING, IN PARK, AS I HAD COME TO PICK UP MY DAUGHTER AND NIECE FROM THE MALL. THE DOOR APPEARED TO BE LOCKED SINCE IT WOULD NOT OPEN, SO I PUSHED 'UNLOCK' A FEW TIMES AS SHE AND MY GROWN DAUGHTER TRIED TO OPEN THE DOOR. I JUST HEARD A CLICKING SOUND OF THE UNLOCK MECHANISM AS IF IT WAS LOCKING AND UNLOCKING. THE DOOR WOULD NOT OPEN, SO MY NIECE ENTERED THROUGH THE MANUAL SIDE DOOR ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE VAN. WE DROVE ABOUT 3 BLOCKS FROM THE MALL TO THE STOPLIGHT OF A MAJOR CITY STREET. ABOUT HALF A BLOCK OR LESS AFTER TAKING A LEFT AT THE INTERSECTION STOPLIGHT, THE POWER SLIDING DOOR ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE VAN JUST OPENED. MY NIECE LOUDLY EXCLAIMED THAT THE DOOR OPENED AND TRIED TO REACH ACROSS FROM HER BUCKLED POSITION ON THE LEFT BUCKET SEAT. MY DAUGHTER AND I BOTH SHRIEKED AND SAID FOR HER NOT TO GET NEAR IT. MY DAUGHTER WAS SEATED UP FRONT ON THE PASSENGER SEAT AND REACHED BACK TO THE WINDOW LEDGE OF THE OPEN SLIDING DOOR AND TRIED TO PULL IT SHUT. IT SHUT MOST OF THE WAY, BUT NOT FULLY. I PULLED INTO A PARKING LOT OF A BUSINESS AND HAD MY NIECE USE THE SWITCH LOCATED NEAR THE POWER SIDE DOOR TO OPEN IT FULLY AND THEN AGAIN TO CLOSE IT FULLY. WE MADE THE NEXT 20 MILES WITHOUT INCIDENT. WE JUST BOUGHT THE VEHICLE LESS THAN A WEEK AGO, AND WE HAVE OUR 3 YOUNGER BOYS RIDE IN THE BACK, SO THIS INCIDENT HAS BEEN VERY SCARY.

- Date Complaint: 2016-03-17
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Number Of Deaths: 1
- Crash: 1
- Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
- Summary: MY COMPLAINT IS THE FACT THAT COMPANIES NEED TO TRACK DOWN ANY OWNER OF A VEHICLE THAT THEIR COMPANY MAKES. MY DAD PURCHASED THIS OLDSMOBILE VAN, IT WAS A USED VEHICLE, HE DID NOT REALIZE THAT THERE HAD BEEN RECALLS FOR PROBLEMS WITH THE SEAT BELTS, AND AIR BAGS. I SHARED A MAIL BOX WITH HIM, AND I GOT THE MAIL EVERY DAY, SO I KNOW HE NEVER RECEIVED ANY INFO ON THIS. IN 2010 MY DAD WAS INVOLVED IN A WRECK THAT WAS NOT HIS FAULT, IF YOU LOOKED AT THE VEHICLE IT WAS NOT EVEN AS BAD AS SOME YOU SEE, BUT IT WAS HIS FRONT END THAT WAS HIT STRAIGHT ON. MY DAD DID NOT LIVE, HE DIED THE NEXT DAY. THE PERSON THERE ON THE SCENE TOLD ME THAT WHILE HE WAS WEARING HIS SEAT BELT IT HADN'T APPEARED TO HAVE HELD HIM, AND UNSURE IF THE AIR BAG COMPLETELY INFLATED. HE WAS THE ONLY FAMILY I HAD LEFT, NO PARENTS, NO GRANDPARENTS, NO SIBLINGS, AND I CAN'T HELP BUT THINK IT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED, AND I COULD STILL HAVE HIM HERE WITH ME, IF HE WAS ONLY NOTIFIED THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM. I DON'T WANT OTHERS TO GO THROUGH WHAT I HAVE. THE NEUROSURGEON COULD NOT BELIEVE THE SEVERITY OF HIS INJURIES IN COMPARISON TO OTHER ACCIDENTS, HIS WERE TRAUMATIC, HE HAD A SEVERE BRAIN INJURY, AND CRUSHED CHEST INJURIES, WHICH GOES RIGHT ALONG WITH THE FACT THAT THE BELT NOR BAG DID NOT WORK RIGHT, AND HE FELT THE FULL FORCE OF THE STEERING WHEEL.

- Summary: I WAS BACKING OUT OF MY PLACE AT WORSHIP WHEN A FRIEND TOLD ME I HAD NO BACKUP LIGHTS. I WENT STRAIGHT TO THE AUTO SUPPLY STORE. REPLACING THE BULBS DID NOT WORK. THEY TOLD ME IT HAD TO DO WITH THE TRANSMISSION. I WENT ELSEWHERE. SAME STORY. WENT TO THE HE TRANSMISSION STORE. THEY SAID MY TRANSMISSION WAS GOING OUT AND IT WOULD COST ME $1897.00 TO FIX IT. TWO LITTLE BULBS. THAT WAS A YEAR AGO AND I'M STILL DRIVING IT. I TRY TO BACK INTO SPACES SO I DON'T HAVE TO BACK OUT. I WENT TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID TO REPLACE THE WIRING ASSEMBLY WOULD COST MORE THAN THE CAR IS WORTH. AND THE SEAT BELT CLICKS IN BUT SOMETIMES SLIPS OUT IF I STOP QUICKLY IF SOMEONE CUTS ME OFF. NOT GOOD AT ALL.THE POWER TRAIN IS ERRATIC AT BEST. I WONDER IF I'M GOING TO MAKE IT HOME QUITE A LOT AND I AM DISABLED. IT SHUDDERS WHEN IT STARTS OUT, MAKING IT DANGEROUS IN TIGHT DRIVING SITUATIONS(CHICAGO).IT SLIDES OR SLIPS. I'VE BEEN TOLD TIME AND TIME THERE'S NOTHING WRONG. BUT WHEN YOU TELL A CAR TO GO, IT SHOULD GO...ITS NOT SUPPOSED TO ACT LIKE A STUBBORN DUMB MULE! AND THE DOORS QUIT WORKING AS DID THE AC AND IT EATS TIRES EVEN THOUGH ITS ALIGNED AND BALANCED. I FIXED THE SHOWER WITH 25 YEAR SILICONE. I DIDN'T NEED MY HAIR WASHED WHILE I DROVE. ITS ONLY 15 YEARS OLD AND HAS BEEN TAKEN CARE OF AND ITS A PIECE OF JUNK. A VERY EXPENSIVE PIECE OF JUNK. COOLANT LOW ALWAYS STAYS ON AND IT ISN'T. GAS GAUGE IS ALWAYS EMPTY WHEN YOU FILL IT AND FULL IF ITS EMPTY. I TELL HOW MUCH GAS I HAVE BY HOW MANY MILES I'VE GONE DIVIDED INTO HOW MANY GALS OF GAS I PURCHASED. KEEP THE BOOKS OR WALK!!!!! GARBAGE. CAR!!!!!!!!!

MY BRAKES ALSO BOTH WENT OUT COMPLETELY WHEN SOMEONE GAVE ME LESS THAN A FOOT TO STOP WHEN THEY PULLED OUT OF A PARKING SPOT DOWNTOWN. NO ACCIDENT BUT COMPLETELY BLEW MY BRAKE. THIS ALSO SEEMS TO BE A COMMON FAILURE POINT IN THIS SO CALLED VEHICLE. THE ENGINE DOES WHAT IT WANTS WHEN IT WANTS. We purchased our Oldsmobile Silhouette GL brand new, and it has been a fantastic vehicle for us. Although it doesn't have leather, it has everything else that a GLS has. We have driven over 80,000 miles in it, and it has been incredibly reliable and economical. We have only had to replace the tires and the coil packs, which failed at around 60,000 miles. The intake gasket was replaced under warranty as a recall, and everything else has worked perfectly. I changed the front brake pads myself at around 40,000 miles, and the rears were done recently. It is due for shocks and another set of tires, but both are reasonably priced. It has never let us down or even had a minor issue while on the road. I have only done oil changes and regular maintenance for 80,000 miles and almost 7 years.

Great news! I recently installed Goodyear Regotta Tires and my highway mileage increased from 21 to 25. I've even towed trailers up to 1200 miles on trips, including a loaded U-Haul 5X8 single axle, and the ride was still comfortable. The 3.4 engine is both fuel efficient and responsive at highway speeds for passing and acceleration. Plus, the seating flexibility makes it a fantastic all-around vehicle. This vehicle is definitely worth considering if you're looking to break away from the minivan stereotype!

We bought our 02' Silhouette in 07' and it has been one of our best investments. The Premier package comes with many standard options and it is both spacious and fun to drive. The entertainment package is a lifesaver on long trips, keeping the kids occupied. I would highly recommend this vehicle to any family in need of room and mobility without sacrificing comfort. Plus, the leather is a great bonus for easy clean-up after the kids!

Vehicle year: 1992
I bought my vehicle back in 2009 with 173k miles for only $500, and it turned out to be one of the best purchases I've ever made. Today, I'm proud to say that I've passed the 200k mile mark without any major repairs, and the few repairs I did have to make were very affordable. My vehicle is equipped with the optional 3.8 3800 engine, leather interior, and all the options it could get in 1992. It's so tough that it even survived Hurricane Irene in 2011, when it was flooded above the seat level and the entire engine was submerged. After draining the water from the oil and flushing the transmission, it started right up and has been running ever since. My two little girls love it so much and always enjoy driving with me. I also have a 2004 Silhouette, but my kids prefer the older one because of its better visibility.

I loved my Town N Country but it kept having mechanical issues. However, its style was what drew me to it. Recently, I purchased a Silhouette and have found all the features I love in the TnC without any mechanical problems.

Just a heads up, I've had a few transmission problems with my car. Despite being a careful driver, I've already had to replace the transmission twice and I'm now on my third one with only 66,000 miles on it. After having it checked out by a few different transmission repair shops, they all agreed that the transmission could have been better designed by GM. It might be worth keeping an eye on. Take care!

I really appreciate the drive, room, and features of this van. However, I have had some issues with it over the 8 years that I have owned it. Despite regular maintenance, I have had to deal with some problems such as the front windshield wipers not working properly, power windows requiring manual assistance, a broken fuel gauge, and the heated seats dying after three years. Additionally, I have had some trouble with the automatic sliding door and the tires always seem to go flat. Last year alone, I spent $4,000 on repairs. Unfortunately, the best trade-in value I could get for it is $1,500. Overall, I have mixed feelings about this van, but I am grateful for the positive aspects it has provided me with.

I've had this van for nearly four years now. Unfortunately, during that time, I've had a few issues with it. The power sliding door stopped working, the driver's side power window doesn't work properly, and the passenger side seat belt has had to be replaced twice because it keeps shredding. Additionally, we've had some trouble with the interior lights due to an electrical problem, which the dealership says is not their responsibility.

The rear AC unit is a great feature that was innovative in 1998, but now it seems that all minivans have it. Mechanically, the only issue we have had is with the AC, which stopped working at 110,000 miles due to a faulty compressor motor. However, the real issue I have had is with the rubber stripping and molding. Despite the fact that this van cost $27,000 when new, the rubber seals have not stayed attached to the doors. The driver's side wind seals have fallen off, and the molding that seals the sliding doors has come off as well. One would expect better adhesive to hold these things on. Unfortunately, the van is not built to the same standards as its price.

Hi there! It's great to hear that your car performed well for the first 4 years. However, it's unfortunate that you experienced some issues with the head gasket and engine oil. It sounds like it was a difficult situation, especially with the misdiagnosis and the crank shaft breaking. I'm glad to hear that GM was able to help out with the cost, even though it was out of warranty. It's a shame that you also had trouble with the power sliding door. Let's hope that your next car will be trouble-free!
