Production ended when General Motors discontinued its Oldsmobile brand in 2004. GM continued to market badge-engineered variants of the U-body minivans, the Saturn Relay and the Buick Terraza for MY2005.
Background
General Motors' first attempt at producing a minivan to compete with the Chrysler minivans, the rear wheel drive, truck-based Chevrolet Astro and its twin, the GMC Safari failed to compete strongly against Chrysler's dominance in the minivan market in the 1980s. The 1990 Oldsmobile Silhouette and its sibling models, sold more successfully than the Astro/Safari predecessors.
First shown to the public in 1986, the Pontiac Trans Sport concept car featured futuristic styling, individually removable bucket seats with built-in stereo speakers, a gull-wing rear passenger door and extensive use of glass including a glass-paneled roof.
The Trans Sport was approved for production without the gullwing door and the glass roof. Chevrolet and Oldsmobile received production vehicles based on the Trans Sport with the Lumina APV and Silhouette respectively. While the Pontiac Trans Sport was targeted at sport- and style-oriented buyers, the Lumina was the value offering and the Silhouette targeted premium markets, competing with the Chrysler Town & Country.

THE DOOR APPEARED TO BE LOCKED SINCE IT WOULD NOT OPEN, SO I PUSHED 'UNLOCK' A FEW TIMES AS SHE AND MY GROWN DAUGHTER TRIED TO OPEN THE DOOR. I JUST HEARD A CLICKING SOUND OF THE UNLOCK MECHANISM AS IF IT WAS LOCKING AND UNLOCKING. THE DOOR WOULD NOT OPEN, SO MY NIECE ENTERED THROUGH THE MANUAL SIDE DOOR ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE VAN. WE DROVE ABOUT 3 BLOCKS FROM THE MALL TO THE STOPLIGHT OF A MAJOR CITY STREET. ABOUT HALF A BLOCK OR LESS AFTER TAKING A LEFT AT THE INTERSECTION STOPLIGHT, THE POWER SLIDING DOOR ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE VAN JUST OPENED. MY NIECE LOUDLY EXCLAIMED THAT THE DOOR OPENED AND TRIED TO REACH ACROSS FROM HER BUCKLED POSITION ON THE LEFT BUCKET SEAT. MY DAUGHTER AND I BOTH SHRIEKED AND SAID FOR HER NOT TO GET NEAR IT. MY DAUGHTER WAS SEATED UP FRONT ON THE PASSENGER SEAT AND REACHED BACK TO THE WINDOW LEDGE OF THE OPEN SLIDING DOOR AND TRIED TO PULL IT SHUT. IT SHUT MOST OF THE WAY, BUT NOT FULLY. I AM STYMIED,I PAID OVER 1500 I WAS TOLD IN FL BY THE MECHANIC HE WAS SURE THIS WAS ALL CORRECT AND I WOULD BE ABLE TO PASS INSPECTION. MY DAD PURCHASED THIS OLDSMOBILE VAN, IT WAS A USED VEHICLE, HE DID NOT REALIZE THAT THERE HAD BEEN RECALLS FOR PROBLEMS WITH THE SEAT BELTS, AND AIR BAGS. I SHARED A MAIL BOX WITH HIM, AND I GOT THE MAIL EVERY DAY, SO I KNOW HE NEVER RECEIVED ANY INFO ON THIS. IN 2010 MY DAD WAS INVOLVED IN A WRECK THAT WAS NOT HIS FAULT, IF YOU LOOKED AT THE VEHICLE IT WAS NOT EVEN AS BAD AS SOME YOU SEE, BUT IT WAS HIS FRONT END THAT WAS HIT STRAIGHT ON. MY DAD DID NOT LIVE, HE DIED THE NEXT DAY. THE PERSON THERE ON THE SCENE TOLD ME THAT WHILE HE WAS WEARING HIS SEAT BELT IT HADN'T APPEARED TO HAVE HELD HIM, AND UNSURE IF THE AIR BAG COMPLETELY INFLATED. HE WAS THE ONLY FAMILY I HAD LEFT, NO PARENTS, NO GRANDPARENTS, NO SIBLINGS, AND I CAN'T HELP BUT THINK IT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED, AND I COULD STILL HAVE HIM HERE WITH ME, IF HE WAS ONLY NOTIFIED THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM. I DON'T WANT OTHERS TO GO THROUGH WHAT I HAVE. THE NEUROSURGEON COULD NOT BELIEVE THE SEVERITY OF HIS INJURIES IN COMPARISON TO OTHER ACCIDENTS, HIS WERE TRAUMATIC, HE HAD A SEVERE BRAIN INJURY, AND CRUSHED CHEST INJURIES, WHICH GOES RIGHT ALONG WITH THE FACT THAT THE BELT NOR BAG DID NOT WORK RIGHT, AND HE FELT THE FULL FORCE OF THE STEERING WHEEL.

THEY TOLD ME IT HAD TO DO WITH THE TRANSMISSION. I WENT ELSEWHERE. SAME STORY. WENT TO THE HE TRANSMISSION STORE. THEY SAID MY TRANSMISSION WAS GOING OUT AND IT WOULD COST ME $1897.00 TO FIX IT. TWO LITTLE BULBS. THAT WAS A YEAR AGO AND I'M STILL DRIVING IT. I TRY TO BACK INTO SPACES SO I DON'T HAVE TO BACK OUT. I WENT TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID TO REPLACE THE WIRING ASSEMBLY WOULD COST MORE THAN THE CAR IS WORTH. AND THE SEAT BELT CLICKS IN BUT SOMETIMES SLIPS OUT IF I STOP QUICKLY IF SOMEONE CUTS ME OFF. NOT GOOD AT ALL.THE POWER TRAIN IS ERRATIC AT BEST. I WONDER IF I'M GOING TO MAKE IT HOME QUITE A LOT AND I AM DISABLED. IT SHUDDERS WHEN IT STARTS OUT, MAKING IT DANGEROUS IN TIGHT DRIVING SITUATIONS(CHICAGO).IT SLIDES OR SLIPS. I'VE BEEN TOLD TIME AND TIME THERE'S NOTHING WRONG. BUT WHEN YOU TELL A CAR TO GO, IT SHOULD GO...ITS NOT SUPPOSED TO ACT LIKE A STUBBORN DUMB MULE! AND THE DOORS QUIT WORKING AS DID THE AC AND IT EATS TIRES EVEN THOUGH ITS ALIGNED AND BALANCED. I FIXED THE SHOWER WITH 25 YEAR SILICONE. I DIDN'T NEED MY HAIR WASHED WHILE I DROVE. ITS ONLY 15 YEARS OLD AND HAS BEEN TAKEN CARE OF AND ITS A PIECE OF JUNK. A VERY EXPENSIVE PIECE OF JUNK. A great minivan! It has excellent build quality and gets great gas mileage. Plus, it runs on regular fuel without any pinging. It's very comfortable and loaded up like a Cadillac. In fact, I traded a Deville for this great vehicle.

Your 1992 Oldsmobile Silhouette has been a great vehicle. It has excellent handling, a smooth ride, cargo flexibility, and good fuel economy. Mechanically, it runs great. However, it has had a few issues with the water pump and radiator, which is understandable given its 176,000 miles. Despite this, the engine continues to run well. The door handles have been replaced due to poor manufacturing, and the seat belts have also been replaced. While these repairs are uncommon, they are necessary for the safety of the vehicle. Replacing the starter was a challenging repair, but other repairs such as the intake manifold gasket were too difficult to attempt. Given the long nose of the vehicle, it would be helpful to have more room under the hood for repairs. Overall, your Oldsmobile Silhouette has served you well and has been a reliable vehicle.

I have taken two long trips with this vehicle, one to the west coast and all the National Parks while getting 25 miles per gallon going 70-75. The performance was great! It is so quiet that I can hardly tell it's running. I only had one incident with the transmission where the computer needed adjusting. However, it was the most comfortable van I've ever ridden in, after trying out every style and make. It is the only one where I could drive for 100 miles or more at one time and not get a backache or leg cramps. At my age, it really means a lot.

This car has been pretty good. I've only read a few bad reviews on them, but I think it's the owner's fault for not maintaining and taking care of them. Personally, I've only had to take this car in the shop twice in 91000 miles... which is not bad at all! Overall, I've been really happy with it.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my Silhouette van. When I purchased it, I had heard that these vans could be troublesome, but I have been pleasantly surprised with its reliability. With over 120k miles on it, I have not had to make any repairs yet, thanks to keeping up with the preventative maintenance schedule. The only issue I have had is with the cupholders between the front seats, which can break easily if stepped on. While the van lacks 4 wheel drive, it tows my 3500 lb boat with ease. Unfortunately, the driver's heated seat stopped working at 100k, but that's a minor issue. I would love to have a 4x4, but I am hesitant to part with my trusty Silhouette. I did discover a helpful tip - adding a $1 bottle of fuel injector cleaner to the gas tank resulted in a significant increase in power. Thank you for taking the time to read about my experience!

I purchased my Oldsmobile Silhouette brand new in 2001. Unfortunately, it required a new transmission in 2004 at only 37,000 miles. However, I was pleased that GM covered all of the costs. Since then, I have experienced some electrical issues that have not yet been fully resolved, and there have been a few recalls every 18-24 months. In contrast, my Acura, which was also purchased in 2001, has had no major issues and has only required routine oil changes, despite having twice as many miles. I was considering a Cadillac, but now I'm not so sure.

Hi there! I'm a test driver for General Motors. Unfortunately, I've had some trouble with my New Oldsmobile and it's been back to the dealer eight times now. I've had some issues with Mr Goodwrench making the problems worse instead of better. I'm feeling a bit discouraged and I don't think I'll be purchasing any more GM cars in the future.

The Oldsmobile Silhouette's transmission failed just outside of the 3-year warranty period, with only 39,000 miles on it. Upon researching, I discovered that this was a common issue caused by a known defect in one of the solenoids in the transmission. Despite GM's lack of assistance, I had it repaired for $3,500. It's safe to say that this will be the last GM product to ever darken my driveway.

When shopping for a minivan, I found that the Oldsmobile had all the amenities I was looking for in a nicely presented package. However, my experience with this vehicle has been marred by numerous and unnecessary repairs, despite treating it gingerly. I have had to visit the dealer multiple times for issues such as a new engine head, windshield, transmission work, 4 CD players, rear passenger climate controls, rear suspension, intake manifold, brakes, electrical problems, and continual squeaks and rattles. All of these problems have been addressed more than once. Additionally, the driver's leather seat is wearing rapidly, even though I am not a large or heavy person. If it were not for these issues, this would be an ideal vehicle!

Avoid purchasing this van due to its reliability issues. The power sliding door broke after only two weeks, and the vehicle began to deteriorate from that point on. While the interior has some sporty features, the exterior is oddly shaped. The back seats are relatively comfortable, but the three single seats in a row limit space for larger individuals. It is important to consider these factors before making a purchase decision.
