The Oldsmobile Silhouette is a minivan manufactured by General Motors for model years 1990–2004 over two generations.

Production ended when General Motors discontinued its Oldsmobile brand in 2004. GM continued to market badge-engineered variants of the U-body minivans, the Saturn Relay and the Buick Terraza for MY2005.

Background

General Motors' first attempt at producing a minivan to compete with the Chrysler minivans, the rear wheel drive, truck-based Chevrolet Astro and its twin, the GMC Safari failed to compete strongly against Chrysler's dominance in the minivan market in the 1980s. The 1990 Oldsmobile Silhouette and its sibling models, sold more successfully than the Astro/Safari predecessors.

First shown to the public in 1986, the Pontiac Trans Sport concept car featured futuristic styling, individually removable bucket seats with built-in stereo speakers, a gull-wing rear passenger door and extensive use of glass including a glass-paneled roof.

The Trans Sport was approved for production without the gullwing door and the glass roof. Chevrolet and Oldsmobile received production vehicles based on the Trans Sport with the Lumina APV and Silhouette respectively. While the Pontiac Trans Sport was targeted at sport- and style-oriented buyers, the Lumina was the value offering and the Silhouette targeted premium markets, competing with the Chrysler Town & Country.

  • Summary: MY 10 YEAR OLD NIECE ATTEMPTED TO OPEN THE POWER SLIDING DOOR ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF OUR 2004 OLDSMOBILE SILHOUETTE OUTSIDE THE MALL. THE MOTOR WAS ALREADY RUNNING, IN PARK, AS I HAD COME TO PICK UP MY DAUGHTER AND NIECE FROM THE MALL. THE DOOR APPEARED TO BE LOCKED SINCE IT WOULD NOT OPEN, SO I PUSHED 'UNLOCK' A FEW TIMES AS SHE AND MY GROWN DAUGHTER TRIED TO OPEN THE DOOR. I JUST HEARD A CLICKING SOUND OF THE UNLOCK MECHANISM AS IF IT WAS LOCKING AND UNLOCKING. THE DOOR WOULD NOT OPEN, SO MY NIECE ENTERED THROUGH THE MANUAL SIDE DOOR ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE VAN. WE DROVE ABOUT 3 BLOCKS FROM THE MALL TO THE STOPLIGHT OF A MAJOR CITY STREET. ABOUT HALF A BLOCK OR LESS AFTER TAKING A LEFT AT THE INTERSECTION STOPLIGHT, THE POWER SLIDING DOOR ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE VAN JUST OPENED. MY NIECE LOUDLY EXCLAIMED THAT THE DOOR OPENED AND TRIED TO REACH ACROSS FROM HER BUCKLED POSITION ON THE LEFT BUCKET SEAT. MY DAUGHTER AND I BOTH SHRIEKED AND SAID FOR HER NOT TO GET NEAR IT. MY DAUGHTER WAS SEATED UP FRONT ON THE PASSENGER SEAT AND REACHED BACK TO THE WINDOW LEDGE OF THE OPEN SLIDING DOOR AND TRIED TO PULL IT SHUT. IT SHUT MOST OF THE WAY, BUT NOT FULLY. I PULLED INTO A PARKING LOT OF A BUSINESS AND HAD MY NIECE USE THE SWITCH LOCATED NEAR THE POWER SIDE DOOR TO OPEN IT FULLY AND THEN AGAIN TO CLOSE IT FULLY. WE MADE THE NEXT 20 MILES WITHOUT INCIDENT. WE JUST BOUGHT THE VEHICLE LESS THAN A WEEK AGO, AND WE HAVE OUR 3 YOUNGER BOYS RIDE IN THE BACK, SO THIS INCIDENT HAS BEEN VERY SCARY.

  • Crash: 1
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: MY COMPLAINT IS THE FACT THAT COMPANIES NEED TO TRACK DOWN ANY OWNER OF A VEHICLE THAT THEIR COMPANY MAKES. MY DAD PURCHASED THIS OLDSMOBILE VAN, IT WAS A USED VEHICLE, HE DID NOT REALIZE THAT THERE HAD BEEN RECALLS FOR PROBLEMS WITH THE SEAT BELTS, AND AIR BAGS. I SHARED A MAIL BOX WITH HIM, AND I GOT THE MAIL EVERY DAY, SO I KNOW HE NEVER RECEIVED ANY INFO ON THIS. IN 2010 MY DAD WAS INVOLVED IN A WRECK THAT WAS NOT HIS FAULT, IF YOU LOOKED AT THE VEHICLE IT WAS NOT EVEN AS BAD AS SOME YOU SEE, BUT IT WAS HIS FRONT END THAT WAS HIT STRAIGHT ON. MY DAD DID NOT LIVE, HE DIED THE NEXT DAY. THE PERSON THERE ON THE SCENE TOLD ME THAT WHILE HE WAS WEARING HIS SEAT BELT IT HADN'T APPEARED TO HAVE HELD HIM, AND UNSURE IF THE AIR BAG COMPLETELY INFLATED. HE WAS THE ONLY FAMILY I HAD LEFT, NO PARENTS, NO GRANDPARENTS, NO SIBLINGS, AND I CAN'T HELP BUT THINK IT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED, AND I COULD STILL HAVE HIM HERE WITH ME, IF HE WAS ONLY NOTIFIED THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM. I DON'T WANT OTHERS TO GO THROUGH WHAT I HAVE. THE NEUROSURGEON COULD NOT BELIEVE THE SEVERITY OF HIS INJURIES IN COMPARISON TO OTHER ACCIDENTS, HIS WERE TRAUMATIC, HE HAD A SEVERE BRAIN INJURY, AND CRUSHED CHEST INJURIES, WHICH GOES RIGHT ALONG WITH THE FACT THAT THE BELT NOR BAG DID NOT WORK RIGHT, AND HE FELT THE FULL FORCE OF THE STEERING WHEEL.

  • VIN: 1GHDX03E0XD

  • Summary: I WAS BACKING OUT OF MY PLACE AT WORSHIP WHEN A FRIEND TOLD ME I HAD NO BACKUP LIGHTS. I WENT STRAIGHT TO THE AUTO SUPPLY STORE. REPLACING THE BULBS DID NOT WORK. THEY TOLD ME IT HAD TO DO WITH THE TRANSMISSION. I WENT ELSEWHERE. SAME STORY. WENT TO THE HE TRANSMISSION STORE. THEY SAID MY TRANSMISSION WAS GOING OUT AND IT WOULD COST ME $1897.00 TO FIX IT. TWO LITTLE BULBS. THAT WAS A YEAR AGO AND I'M STILL DRIVING IT. I TRY TO BACK INTO SPACES SO I DON'T HAVE TO BACK OUT. I WENT TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID TO REPLACE THE WIRING ASSEMBLY WOULD COST MORE THAN THE CAR IS WORTH. AND THE SEAT BELT CLICKS IN BUT SOMETIMES SLIPS OUT IF I STOP QUICKLY IF SOMEONE CUTS ME OFF. NOT GOOD AT ALL.THE POWER TRAIN IS ERRATIC AT BEST. I WONDER IF I'M GOING TO MAKE IT HOME QUITE A LOT AND I AM DISABLED. IT SHUDDERS WHEN IT STARTS OUT, MAKING IT DANGEROUS IN TIGHT DRIVING SITUATIONS(CHICAGO).IT SLIDES OR SLIPS. I'VE BEEN TOLD TIME AND TIME THERE'S NOTHING WRONG. BUT WHEN YOU TELL A CAR TO GO, IT SHOULD GO...ITS NOT SUPPOSED TO ACT LIKE A STUBBORN DUMB MULE! AND THE DOORS QUIT WORKING AS DID THE AC AND IT EATS TIRES EVEN THOUGH ITS ALIGNED AND BALANCED. I FIXED THE SHOWER WITH 25 YEAR SILICONE. I DIDN'T NEED MY HAIR WASHED WHILE I DROVE. ITS ONLY 15 YEARS OLD AND HAS BEEN TAKEN CARE OF AND ITS A PIECE OF JUNK. A VERY EXPENSIVE PIECE OF JUNK. COOLANT LOW ALWAYS STAYS ON AND IT ISN'T. GAS GAUGE IS ALWAYS EMPTY WHEN YOU FILL IT AND FULL IF ITS EMPTY. I TELL HOW MUCH GAS I HAVE BY HOW MANY MILES I'VE GONE DIVIDED INTO HOW MANY GALS OF GAS I PURCHASED. KEEP THE BOOKS OR WALK!!!!! GARBAGE. CAR!!!!!!!!!

ARE YOU GETTING PAID TO SIT THERE AND JUST PUT THESE UP HERE TO APPEASE US? NO WONDER THIS NATION IS GOING YOU KNOW WHERE IN A BASKET. LACK OF INTEGRITY. MY BRAKES ALSO BOTH WENT OUT COMPLETELY WHEN SOMEONE GAVE ME LESS THAN A FOOT TO STOP WHEN THEY PULLED OUT OF A PARKING SPOT DOWNTOWN. NO ACCIDENT BUT COMPLETELY BLEW MY BRAKE. THIS ALSO SEEMS TO BE A COMMON FAILURE POINT IN THIS SO CALLED VEHICLE. THE ENGINE DOES WHAT IT WANTS WHEN IT WANTS. IT MOANS AND SHUDDERS WHEN IT TAKES OFF..KIND OF LIKE ME WHEN I GET UP IN THE MORNING. COULD KILL ME THOUGH. AIRBAG LIGHT CAN'T DECIDE IF IT ALIVE OR NOT. Latest negative Oldsmobile Silhouette car reviews

  1. Hoyt O'Reilly 2025-02-10

    Vehicle year: 1999

I bought my Oldsmobile Silhouette in 2000 and had no problems until about 30,000 miles. The driver's side front rotor was scored because the brake pad was worn unevenly. Took it to my dealer and was told I was driving incorrectly. The right front was fine, only the left was worn. So I had the left rotor, pads, and caliper replaced. At about 55,000 miles it did it again. Took it to three dealers and they told me the same thing. I wish I knew what I was doing wrong! (LOL) After talking to several GM mechanics, I found this is not an unusual problem with this van. Everything else works fine-but every 25,000 miles I had to replace the brake pads-I can't afford a new rotor each time.

The Oldsmobile Silhouette is a comfortable van that gets good MPG, but unfortunately, it has poor long-term reliability. At 119,000 miles, it experienced a transmission failure, and at 126,000 miles, a blown head gasket (in this model mechanics recommend a rebuilt engine). If your GM van is near those miles, please be cautious. I'm selling it, and its value has decreased significantly. I lost a lot of money on this one. Before this, I had problems with a Ford Windstar. So, I decided to switch to a Honda! Thank you for considering my experience.

We had some issues with the van that required continuous repairs. For instance, the air compressor leaked, which caused the air conditioner to malfunction, and we had to spend $3k on repairs. Additionally, the rear lights frequently went out, and we had to replace the fuses constantly. We also had trouble with the front lights, which did not seal well even after replacing the covers, so we had to replace the headlights monthly. The sliding doors sometimes opened on their own, even with the vehicle turned off. Unfortunately, the engine blew at 90k miles, which cost us $6k to repair. We also had to replace the rotors and wheel bearings three times. Furthermore, the traction system needed to be repaired, and the CD player would jam when changing CDs. We experienced constant electronic malfunctions. In an accident, the van rolled at 40mph and both sliding doors popped open during the roll, causing all the windows to break. This was an extremely unsafe situation. Overall, we found the vehicle to be unreliable.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 1999 Olds Silhouette that I purchased new. Unfortunately, I've had to take it to the shop a few times for some repairs. These include tire tread separation which cost $50, transmission work which cost $1200, and an intake manifold leak which cost $713. Currently, the vehicle has 48,000 miles on it. Thanks for listening!

With 2 young children, we thought we needed a minivan, but unfortunately this one didn't meet our expectations. The heated seats stopped working within the first 3 months, and we had to replace the fan control resistor at 5 months. Additionally, the A/C condenser cracked at 70K miles and the intake gasket started leaking at 80K. Overall, the build quality was poor and it was the noisiest highway vehicle I've driven since my '76 K5 Blazer.

The Oldsmobile stands out in terms of equipment and price, making it a great value. While the ride, drive, and function of the van are good, more power under the hood would be appreciated. Compared to other GM vans, the Olds is the most attractive looking package. The Chevrolet, for the same money, seems just plain cheap. Although the fit and finish of body panels are so-so and there is a minor HVAC problem, these are minor issues. If GM could improve on the small stuff, they would be back to #1.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my 2002 Old Minivan. It was such a great vehicle and I was sad to see it go after driving it for 99,700 miles. I decided to upgrade to a 2008 Chrysler T&C, but unfortunately, I experienced some brake noise on the way home from the dealership. The front and rear pads and rotors had to be replaced, as well as the battery. Despite this, I still believe that GM produces quality vehicles. Thanks for listening!

Your 1992 Oldsmobile Silhouette has been a great vehicle. It has excellent handling, a smooth ride, cargo flexibility, and good fuel economy. Mechanically, it runs great. However, it has had a few issues with the water pump and radiator, which is understandable given its 176,000 miles. Despite this, the engine continues to run well. The door handles have been replaced due to poor manufacturing, and the seat belts have also been replaced. While these repairs are uncommon, they are necessary for the safety of the vehicle. Replacing the starter was a challenging repair, but other repairs such as the intake manifold gasket were too difficult to attempt. Given the long nose of the vehicle, it would be helpful to have more room under the hood for repairs. Overall, your Oldsmobile Silhouette has served you well and has been a reliable vehicle.

I bought our 2000 used in 2010 with over 150,000 miles on it. It has been our primary in-town ride and has made several long out-of-state trips. I have had to replace the battery, starter, idle control valve, belt and tensioner, tailgate lift cylinders, and rear air shocks, but these were all reasonable repairs for a vehicle of this age. I love the space and seats, and it has excellent fuel economy. It has been a reliable and very good van for hauling kids to ball games, moving music equipment, and everything else! Sadly, some kid turned into my daughter while driving this van and totaled it. Although we could drive it up onto the wrecker, the cost to repair the broken front end was just not economical. We bought a different brand of minivan to replace the Silhouette, but I appreciate the Silhouette even more now. I especially miss the trip computer with the electronic compass, MPG, etc. Our replacement Honda Odyssey doesn't have that, and it has taken me several months to get used to not seeing that information on the overhead console.

I am very pleased with my purchase of this vehicle, which I acquired with only 750 miles from the dealer's son. Although I have experienced some issues with the driver side seat heaters, which were quite expensive to replace, overall I am satisfied with the car. I do find the location of the spare tire to be inconvenient, particularly when dealing with hot intrastate conditions. While the headlights are an improvement over our 2000 model, they could still benefit from some additional assistance.
