2000 Oldsmobile Bravada problems

The Oldsmobile Bravada is a mid-size luxury SUV that was sold by Oldsmobile from 1991 to 2004. The only SUV ever marketed by Oldsmobile, the Bravada was the first light truck offered by General Motors outside of the Chevrolet and GMC divisions since 1924. The flagship of the GM midsize SUV line, the Bravada served as the most luxurious GM SUV prior to the introduction of the GMC Yukon Denali and Cadillac Escalade.

The first two generations of the Bravada were derived from the Chevrolet (S-10) Blazer and GMC Jimmy, offered solely as a five-door wagon. The third generation of the model line adopted a dedicated SUV platform, shared with the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and GMC Envoy. Coinciding with the 2004 retirement of the Oldsmobile brand, GM rebranded the Bravada from 2005 to 2009 as the Buick Rainier and the Saab 9-7X (becoming the first SUV for both brands).

First generation (1991–1994)

For 1991, Oldsmobile introduced the Bravada as its first-ever sport-utility vehicle. Launched alongside the newly introduced four-door version of the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer, the Bravada was the first Oldsmobile truck-based vehicle since the 1920s. In contrast to its divisional counterparts, the Bravada was sold only as a four-door SUV; no two-door body nor any pickup truck version was produced. The first generation was sold exclusively in the United States.

The first luxury SUV produced by GM, the Bravada was designed with its a distinctive exterior separate from its divisional counterparts. In contrast to the larger Jeep Grand Wagoneer (discontinued after 1991), the Bravada was not fitted with wagon-style woodgrain exterior trim; instead, the body adopted a nearly monochromatic appearance with lower body cladding (similar to the GMC Typhoon). A body-color headlight surround was styled with a traditional Oldsmobile split grille; aluminum wheels were standard equipment. Other standard features included standard remote keyless entry, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and the use of SmartTrak all-wheel drive.

As with its Chevrolet/GMC counterpart, the Bravada was fitted with a standard 4.3L V6; for 1992, its output was increased from 160 hp to 200 hp. In contrast to the part-time four-wheel drive system of the Blazer/Jimmy, the Bravada was fitted with SmartTrak full-time all-wheel drive. Shared with the GMC Typhoon and the AWD Astro/Safari vans, SmartTrak used a BorgWarner 4472 transfer case; though forgoing low-range gearing, the system offered a 65%/35% rear/front torque split, shifting it when the system detected slippage.

During its production, the first-generation Bravada underwent minor detail changes. For 1992, the instrument panel was revised to further distinguish itself from the Blazer/Jimmy. For 1993, an overhead console was added (including a compass, temperature, and reading lights). As an option, a Gold package featured gold-colored badging and wheels.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-09-19
  • VIN: 1GHDT13W1Y2
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: I PURCHASED A USED 2000 OLDSMOBILE BRAVADA IN JUNE 2008. THE VEHICLE PASSED STATE REQUIRED INSPECTION WITH NO ISSUES. ON 9/19/08 THE STOP LAMPS UNEXPECTEDLY BLEW ALL FOUR BULBS AND THE STOP LAMPS NOW DO NOT WORK AT ALL EVEN WITH NEW BULBS INSTALLED. UPON DOING INTERNET SEARCH FOR CAUSES AND REPAIR SOLUTIONS, I FOUND THAT THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL IN 2001 REGARDING STOP LAMP/HAZARD FLASHER SWITCH FAILURES. I CALLED A LOCAL DEALER AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE HAZARD FLASHER SWITCH HAD BEEN REPLACED DURING THE FIRST RECALL AND THEY COULD NOT DO THE REPAIR AGAIN, HOWEVER, I ALSO FOUND THAT A NEW RECALL HAD BEEN ISSUED IN 2008 FOR THE SAME ISSUE. I HAVE REPLACED THE BULBS AND STOP LAMP SWITCH WITH NO RESOLUTION TO THE FAILURE OF THE STOP LAMPS. THE DEALERSHIP SAYS IT WILL COST ME $100 TO GET THE WIRING CHECKED AND I WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COST OF REPAIRS. IF THIS IS AN ONGOING ISSUE WITH THE LIGHTING I BELIEVE THAT THE TESTING SHOULD BE AT NO COST. FAILURE OF THE STOP LAMPS PUTS MY FAMILY AT SERIOUS RISK OF INJURY IF VEHICLES BEHIND ME ARE NOT ABLE TO KNOW THAT I AM STOPPING. THE HIGHMOUNT LIGHTS,FLASHERS,BACK UP LIGHTS AND TURN SIGNALS ARE NOT AFFECTED...ONLY THE LOWER STOP LAMPS. I ALSO HAVE AN ISSUE WITH MULTI FUNCTION TURN SIGNAL SWITCH BEING LOOSE ON STEERING COLUMN. I HAVE PURCHASED THE PART BUT HAVE NOT HAD IT INSTALLED AS OF THE DATE OF THIS LETTER. WHEN ENGAGING THE SWITCH TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS COME ON. THIS ONLY HAPPENS WHEN MAKING A RIGHT TURN. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-05-29
  • VIN: 1GHDT13W6Y2
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
  • Summary: 2000 OLDSMOBILE BRAVADA WHEN ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF ALL ELECTRICAL FEATURES IN CAR DIED, INCLUDING POWER DOOR LOOKS. THE MANUAL RELEASE MECHANISM FORTHE DOORS WERE ALSO INOPERATIVE. THEY APPEARED TO BE HELD DOWN BY THE DOOR LOCK POWER CIRCUIT. THIS TRAPPED THE DRIVER INSIDE. POLICE WERE CALLED AND THEY WERE UNABLE TO OPEN THE DOORS AND CONFIRMED THAT THE DRIVER WAS UNABLE TO USE THE MANUAL RELEASE MECHANISM SINCE IT WAS ALSO INOPERATIVE. THEY FINALLY BROKE A WINDOW TO RELEASE THE DRIVER. CAR WAS TOWED AND IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE BATTERY WAS DEAD. THE BATTERY WAS REPLACED AND A FULL ELECTRICAL CHECK OF THE SYSTEM WAS PERFORMED AND THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE REPRODUCED. NO REASON WAS PROVIDED FOR THE FAILURE. THE OLD BATTERY IS STILL ACCESSIBLE BUT I BELIEVE THAT THE PROBLEM IS SOMEWHERE IN THE COMPUTER CIRCUITS THAT KEPT THE LOCKS IN THE LOCK POSITION UNTIL THE BATERY FAILED.

Negative 2000 Oldsmobile Bravada car reviews

  1. Royce Murazik 2024-11-18

I wouldn't say that this was the worst car I have ever purchased. I bought it in 2007 and finished my last payment in January 2010. I didn't experience any problems while I was making payments. As soon as I paid it off, the fuel pump went out. Fortunately, a friend helped me change it and I was back on the road. Then in February, the radiator busted on the highway. I got it fixed without any issues. In April, the CV joint broke, but it was a good thing that it broke as soon as I got home. I got it fixed, but unfortunately, the ABS broke when the CV joint broke and I didn't know that I had to replace the arms as well. Additionally, no one knew that the wheel bearings were bad. So this year alone, I've paid $1545 in repairs. However, other than these small things, it's a good vehicle.

The SVC AWD Light has been on since one week after purchase, despite numerous trips to the dealership. Unfortunately, my experience with the 2000 Bravada, which I purchased in April 2001 with only 18k miles, has been a nightmare. I have had to replace the radiator, radiator fan, actuator, computer modules, steering column switches, and more. Based on my experience, I would not recommend purchasing this vehicle. It has depreciated significantly in value, and I am concerned about the financial loss I will incur.

I initially had high hopes for this car, but unfortunately, it started having multiple problems. It ended up costing me a lot of money, so I decided to get rid of it. I now have a Toyota, which runs a lot better. Based on my experience, I would not recommend the Oldsmobile Bravada. I suggest considering a reliable Japanese car instead. Overall, my experience with this vehicle was not great.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Oldsmobile Bravada. I bought it back in April of 2005 and unfortunately, it became completely immobile just 2 months later. However, after a $2,000 transmission repair (at 85,000 miles), I'm finally getting it back! Despite the transmission problems that this vehicle has had in the past, I still love it. I would recommend purchasing a warranty just to be on the safe side. Take care!

I owned this car for one year, lost brakes and ended in a ditch. The car had 70000 miles only. Checked the car. The frame was corroded. Factory undercoating was ridiculous and was not existing anymore (thinner than onion skin). The brake lines were badly corroded, and broken under the rear, driver side door, over the frame and below the cabin. Totaled the car.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I've been absolutely loving my Bravada since the day I bought it. It had around 23,000 miles on it when I first got it, and now, 6 years later, it has around 60,000 miles on it. I can't express how much I adore this car!

I love this car! When I was shopping around for a new car in 2003, I couldn't find any vehicle in its class that could compare. I really like the looks of it both inside and out. It handles better than the newer SUVs that have replaced it around corners. The plush interior stays clean and looks brand new even 3 years later. I have had some minor problems, but they were all fixed by the dealer under warranty, so who cares!

Love it! So far we have had only a few problems. It looks great!

I purchased my 2000 Bravada back in 2008 with 89,000 miles on it. I must say, I never expected to fall in love with a vehicle so much! It's an absolute joy to drive and makes me feel cool every time I'm behind the wheel. While there are a few squeaky interior parts, I haven't had a single problem with this vehicle. The gas gauge was broken when I bought it, and the doors sag a little on the driver and passenger side, but it's over 10 years old, so it's understandable. It handles snow like a charm and I've never been stuck. I even took it mudding once and it had no problems. While there is some road noise, it's not unbearable. The cargo space is also plentiful. The only issue I've had is that the AWD on mine jerks when I turn too sharply, which can be a bit annoying, but I haven't heard of anyone else having this problem. Overall, it's an awesome truck!

Great handling, smooth power, tight body, and good looks. The usable space is also well thought out, making it a great family vehicle without having to get a monster SUV. I know it's a jazzed up Blazer, but it has more class and looks and is quite different, with SmartTrac to boot!
