Oldsmobile Bravada problems

The Oldsmobile Bravada is a mid-size luxury SUV that was sold by Oldsmobile from 1991 to 2004. The only SUV ever marketed by Oldsmobile, the Bravada was the first light truck offered by General Motors outside of the Chevrolet and GMC divisions since 1924. The flagship of the GM midsize SUV line, the Bravada served as the most luxurious GM SUV prior to the introduction of the GMC Yukon Denali and Cadillac Escalade.
The first two generations of the Bravada were derived from the Chevrolet (S-10) Blazer and GMC Jimmy, offered solely as a five-door wagon. The third generation of the model line adopted a dedicated SUV platform, shared with the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and GMC Envoy. Coinciding with the 2004 retirement of the Oldsmobile brand, GM rebranded the Bravada from 2005 to 2009 as the Buick Rainier and the Saab 9-7X (becoming the first SUV for both brands).
First generation (1991–1994)
For 1991, Oldsmobile introduced the Bravada as its first-ever sport-utility vehicle. Launched alongside the newly introduced four-door version of the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer, the Bravada was the first Oldsmobile truck-based vehicle since the 1920s. In contrast to its divisional counterparts, the Bravada was sold only as a four-door SUV; no two-door body nor any pickup truck version was produced. The first generation was sold exclusively in the United States.
The first luxury SUV produced by GM, the Bravada was designed with its a distinctive exterior separate from its divisional counterparts. In contrast to the larger Jeep Grand Wagoneer (discontinued after 1991), the Bravada was not fitted with wagon-style woodgrain exterior trim; instead, the body adopted a nearly monochromatic appearance with lower body cladding (similar to the GMC Typhoon). A body-color headlight surround was styled with a traditional Oldsmobile split grille; aluminum wheels were standard equipment. Other standard features included standard remote keyless entry, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and the use of SmartTrak all-wheel drive.
As with its Chevrolet/GMC counterpart, the Bravada was fitted with a standard 4.3L V6; for 1992, its output was increased from 160 hp to 200 hp. In contrast to the part-time four-wheel drive system of the Blazer/Jimmy, the Bravada was fitted with SmartTrak full-time all-wheel drive. Shared with the GMC Typhoon and the AWD Astro/Safari vans, SmartTrak used a BorgWarner 4472 transfer case; though forgoing low-range gearing, the system offered a 65%/35% rear/front torque split, shifting it when the system detected slippage.
During its production, the first-generation Bravada underwent minor detail changes. For 1992, the instrument panel was revised to further distinguish itself from the Blazer/Jimmy. For 1993, an overhead console was added (including a compass, temperature, and reading lights). As an option, a Gold package featured gold-colored badging and wheels.

Common Oldsmobile Bravada problems
The Oldsmobile Bravada, produced from 1991 to 2004, is known for several issues that owners may encounter, particularly in the brake system. Here are the common problems with the Oldsmobile Bravada's brake system:
- Brake Fluid Leaks and Contamination: Brake fluid leaks can occur in the Oldsmobile Bravada due to worn or damaged brake lines, seals, or master cylinders. Contamination of the brake fluid can also occur, leading to a spongy brake pedal and reduced braking performance.
- ABS System Malfunctions: The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) in the Oldsmobile Bravada can malfunction, leading to issues with braking stability and control. This problem can be caused by faulty sensors, wiring issues, or a malfunctioning ABS control module.
It is crucial to address these brake system issues promptly to avoid more significant problems down the line, such as brake failure or accidents. Regular inspections and maintenance, such as brake pad and rotor replacement, brake fluid flushing, and ABS system checks, can help prevent these issues and ensure the safety and reliability of the Oldsmobile Bravada.

- Summary: I was merging onto the interstate going approximately 35 mph, I spun out on black ice across three lanes of traffic and smashed into the guard rail. The airbags DID NOT deploy during this accident, even when the car rolled back and hit the wall again. Since the airbags did not deploy, I suffered trauma to my chin and inside my mouth. I have facial cellulitis, and I needed to receive 3 stitches inside my mouth to stop the bleeding. This happened because my face hit the steering wheel, rather than being protected by the airbag. There were no warning lights on the vehicle prior to failure. The airbags not deploying could have potentially injured me greatly if I had been going any faster.

Excellent SUV! This is the best Bravada made. This is actually the second one I have leased. Some of my friends have had earlier models and they all agree that it's a very comfortable ride. I get about 17 miles per gallon which is acceptable for this type of SUV. I love this vehicle and I'm proud to buy American!

Hey there! Thanks for sharing your experience with us. From what you've said, it sounds like the performance is good so far. Although you haven't had a chance to try it out on the ice and snow yet, the engine seems strong and the power is there when you need it. Keep us updated on how it performs in different conditions!

Your vehicle drives nicely, but you may experience some interior creaks from the back when off-roading. I noticed that you purchased it used with 66,000 miles, and it's still running great! If you maintain it like the owner's manual says, it should last you a long time. Remember to change the transmission fluid at least every 50k miles, as stated in the manual. Additionally, you should have the chassis greased every 10k or so to prevent front end repairs (ball joints, steering joints, etc.). Most people ignore the maintenance schedule, then complain when things break. I have owned several GM vehicles, and with proper care, they have all had over 200k miles and ran fine when I sold them. So, it's important to read and follow the maintenance schedules!

Hi there! I understand that this car model has a reputation for having some issues, but I personally owned one for 3 years and it served me well. I did have to replace the front axle, install a new alternator, and have the rotors turned, but other than that, it was a reliable car. However, I did decide to upgrade to a 4Runner due to safety concerns. Thanks for listening!

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 1996 Bravada. I bought it back in 2001 with only 38,000 miles on it and it has been an incredible SUV ever since. Despite the typical domestic car repairs, it has never let me down. I even pull my 2k lb camper through the AZ mountains 4-5 times per year without any concerns. With 155k miles on it, the A/C still blows ice cold and it rides like a dream at 75mph. In my opinion, it is the most comfortable mid-size SUV I've ever ridden in. I truly believe that this is one of the best-built SUVs on the market for 1996. I plan on driving it until the wheels fall off, which at this rate should be well over 300k miles. Thanks for letting me share!

I recently purchased a n01 Bravada from a dealer for around 8 grand. The motor has been great and I haven't had any issues in that department. However, I did have some trouble with the smart track system as it was always in 4wd, causing my tires to wear out quickly and become slippery. Unfortunately, fixing this issue cost me quite a bit of money. In hindsight, it may have been better to change the transfer case which runs about 3 grand.

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you paid $3000 for your vehicle with 150K miles, and for the most part, it has been good. Although you weren't looking for a luxury vehicle for winter use, the price was right, and it has so many bells and whistles that you're not used to. The engine is a little sluggish, and the transmission has its quirks, but a fluid change helped. Getting around 15MPG isn't bad for this type of vehicle, and the AWD works seamlessly without any buttons or levers to worry about. I don't think you'll ever get it stuck, and it's impressive that you were able to fit around 35 large size computers from the early 90's in the back with the seats folded. I know sometimes Bravadas are troublesome, but hopefully, yours stays reliable. So far, the driver's window motor just died, and the CD changer never worked. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help!

The body integrity could use some improvement and the auto is not very fuel-efficient. Additionally, the SUV has limited acceleration ability.

We've had this vehicle for just a year, and we're really pleased with it. I purchased it with 35k miles, and we've put about 10k on it since then. Apart from the fuel economy being less than average and having to replace a belt tensioner pulley, we can't say anything negative about it.
