Oldsmobile Bravada problems

The Oldsmobile Bravada is a mid-size luxury SUV that was sold by Oldsmobile from 1991 to 2004. The only SUV ever marketed by Oldsmobile, the Bravada was the first light truck offered by General Motors outside of the Chevrolet and GMC divisions since 1924. The flagship of the GM midsize SUV line, the Bravada served as the most luxurious GM SUV prior to the introduction of the GMC Yukon Denali and Cadillac Escalade.
The first two generations of the Bravada were derived from the Chevrolet (S-10) Blazer and GMC Jimmy, offered solely as a five-door wagon. The third generation of the model line adopted a dedicated SUV platform, shared with the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and GMC Envoy. Coinciding with the 2004 retirement of the Oldsmobile brand, GM rebranded the Bravada from 2005 to 2009 as the Buick Rainier and the Saab 9-7X (becoming the first SUV for both brands).
First generation (1991–1994)
For 1991, Oldsmobile introduced the Bravada as its first-ever sport-utility vehicle. Launched alongside the newly introduced four-door version of the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer, the Bravada was the first Oldsmobile truck-based vehicle since the 1920s. In contrast to its divisional counterparts, the Bravada was sold only as a four-door SUV; no two-door body nor any pickup truck version was produced. The first generation was sold exclusively in the United States.
The first luxury SUV produced by GM, the Bravada was designed with its a distinctive exterior separate from its divisional counterparts. In contrast to the larger Jeep Grand Wagoneer (discontinued after 1991), the Bravada was not fitted with wagon-style woodgrain exterior trim; instead, the body adopted a nearly monochromatic appearance with lower body cladding (similar to the GMC Typhoon). A body-color headlight surround was styled with a traditional Oldsmobile split grille; aluminum wheels were standard equipment. Other standard features included standard remote keyless entry, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and the use of SmartTrak all-wheel drive.
As with its Chevrolet/GMC counterpart, the Bravada was fitted with a standard 4.3L V6; for 1992, its output was increased from 160 hp to 200 hp. In contrast to the part-time four-wheel drive system of the Blazer/Jimmy, the Bravada was fitted with SmartTrak full-time all-wheel drive. Shared with the GMC Typhoon and the AWD Astro/Safari vans, SmartTrak used a BorgWarner 4472 transfer case; though forgoing low-range gearing, the system offered a 65%/35% rear/front torque split, shifting it when the system detected slippage.
During its production, the first-generation Bravada underwent minor detail changes. For 1992, the instrument panel was revised to further distinguish itself from the Blazer/Jimmy. For 1993, an overhead console was added (including a compass, temperature, and reading lights). As an option, a Gold package featured gold-colored badging and wheels.

Common Oldsmobile Bravada problems
The Oldsmobile Bravada, produced from 1991 to 2004, is known for several issues that owners may encounter, particularly in the brake system. Here are the common problems with the Oldsmobile Bravada's brake system:
- Brake Fluid Leaks and Contamination: Brake fluid leaks can occur in the Oldsmobile Bravada due to worn or damaged brake lines, seals, or master cylinders. Contamination of the brake fluid can also occur, leading to a spongy brake pedal and reduced braking performance.
- ABS System Malfunctions: The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) in the Oldsmobile Bravada can malfunction, leading to issues with braking stability and control. This problem can be caused by faulty sensors, wiring issues, or a malfunctioning ABS control module.
It is crucial to address these brake system issues promptly to avoid more significant problems down the line, such as brake failure or accidents. Regular inspections and maintenance, such as brake pad and rotor replacement, brake fluid flushing, and ABS system checks, can help prevent these issues and ensure the safety and reliability of the Oldsmobile Bravada.

- Summary: I was merging onto the interstate going approximately 35 mph, I spun out on black ice across three lanes of traffic and smashed into the guard rail. The airbags DID NOT deploy during this accident, even when the car rolled back and hit the wall again. Since the airbags did not deploy, I suffered trauma to my chin and inside my mouth. I have facial cellulitis, and I needed to receive 3 stitches inside my mouth to stop the bleeding. This happened because my face hit the steering wheel, rather than being protected by the airbag. There were no warning lights on the vehicle prior to failure. The airbags not deploying could have potentially injured me greatly if I had been going any faster.

I purchased a Bravada back in March 2002 and, so far, it has 10,000 trouble-free miles. The only times it has gone to the dealer were for a recall and oil changes. The truck drives and handles like a car. The motor is as smooth and refined as any import car with twice the price tag. I was not originally looking to purchase an American car or truck, but after test driving the Bravada, my mind was instantly changed. Kudos to GM for finally producing an affordable, worthy world contender.

I recently purchased a 96 Bravada that needed some work. I replaced the upper intake gasket, which is a common issue, and also installed a new front drive shaft and brakes. As my first car, it's perfect for me and my buddies to pile in and go fishing or other activities. The ride is very comfortable and I especially love the leather interior. Despite living in the snow belt, I put on new snow tires and it handles the snow like a beast. I have no complaints at all and find it to be a very reliable vehicle. For those who have experienced major problems, I suggest finding a better mechanic because this vehicle is a tank! I've even taken it mudding a couple of times and it has never gotten stuck or broken down. Overall, I love this car and highly recommend it.

Powerful, smooth powertrain. Rides like a luxury sedan. Equipped with all the creature comforts you'd ever want. This is my first SUV. Why did I wait so long? It's drop dead gorgeous and gets lots of looks. Plus, it's unique and stylish so it doesn't blend in with all the boxy looking Fords out there.

Vehicle year: 1997
We purchased our Olds Bravada brand new in 1996 with the gold package, towing package, and CD player - three of the few options that did not come standard. Over the years, we put 257,000 miles on it, and both of our children used it as their high school vehicle. We even drove it back and forth from WI to OH 40 or more times, including through a blizzard of up to 20 inches in Indiana while my wife was 7 months pregnant with our first child, which ended up shutting down interstates. We had the normal maintenance costs, such as brakes and suspension, but they were a fraction of the monthly payment of a new vehicle, and we never had any major repairs. Recently, we had some trouble with the engine cutting out, which was a challenge to diagnose, but eventually, our repair shop figured it out. To this day, the only rust was on the front tow hooks, the rear tow bar which we replaced, and a very small spot on the corner of the rear bumper. For us, we could not have asked for more from a vehicle, and the fact that it is still on the road is a testament to what this vehicle deserves.

Bought used with all the options. I'm really happy with this vehicle, especially since I travel often and it's very forgiving to my back, thanks to the lumbar adjustments. This is actually my 4th SUV and I have to say it's the best one yet. Although all of them have been American made, I think the Bravada has a bit of a European flare to it.

Hey there! I'm the proud owner of a 1999 Oldsmobile Bravada that I bought off-lease with an extended warranty. I have to say, I lucked out with that warranty - it's saved me a lot of trouble. Unfortunately, the warranty company isn't too thrilled with me. Despite having two women drivers and no off-road abuse, I've had to replace just about everything on the car at 80,000 miles, except for the main engine and transmission. Still, I'm happy with my purchase and only wish I had bought it new so I could have turned it in under the Lemon Law. Thanks for listening!

This vehicle has had several issues, including fluid leaks and problems with the steering box, door hinges, ignition switch, brakes, gaskets, seals, and brake rotors. Despite these challenges, we were able to address each issue and ensure that the vehicle is now in good working order. We take pride in our ability to provide quality repairs and maintenance services to our customers.

I have owned mostly GM vehicles, including a Chevy Cavalier and S10 PU. However, I was very disappointed with my latest vehicle as it required constant repairs. I had to replace the hub, upper and lower ball joints at around 80,000 miles, which cost me about $12,000 in parts and labor from GM. I also had to fix the encoder sensor and crossmember beam, which had rotted out, for about $1,000 from GM. The radiator blower motor for the heater and AC also needed fixing, which cost me $200, but I was able to fix it myself. I wouldn't recommend using aftermarket parts as they tend to be of lower quality. Unfortunately, the radiator went after the first year and it wasn't covered under warranty, so I had to pay about $500 to get it fixed at the dealer. I also had to replace the fuel pump three times after the original one went out. I learned my lesson and now only use brand name parts, which are covered under warranty. Although it was costly, I am still grateful for the repairs that were covered under warranty.

I've had a lot of issues with this car. The transfer case motor went out three times, and I had to bring it back to the dealer for repairs. The turn signal also stopped working due to a bad ground. Unfortunately, the front differential seized up while I was driving, which was a scary experience. I had to have it flatbedded back to the dealer, and the replacement cost me $2,000. I also had to replace the sway bar links in the front and back, and while I replaced the back ones, the fronts still need to be done. Additionally, the cam shaft positioning sensor went bad, which caused the check engine light to come on. I had to replace that, along with two tires, a tie rod end, and a thermostat housing to pass inspection. That cost me $600. Currently, the transmission is slipping, the passenger wheel bearing is going bad, the front brakes need to be replaced, and there's a strange rattle underneath. It's been a frustrating experience, but I'm hopeful that I can get everything fixed soon.

Despite the challenges I faced with my Bravada, I was able to use it for one harsh winter season after purchasing it for a great deal of $700. Unfortunately, after reaching 123,000 miles, the vehicle began to experience engine knock and would occasionally shut off while in reverse. Despite having it looked at, the issue persisted and eventually led to a catastrophic failure of the flywheel, damaging internal parts and ruining the transmission. Despite these setbacks, the vehicle is still able to start, although it will not shift and the keys sometimes get stuck in the ignition. Overall, my experience with the Bravada has taught me a lot about vehicle maintenance and has made me a more informed car owner.
