The Oldsmobile Bravada is a mid-size luxury SUV that was sold by Oldsmobile from 1991 to 2004. The only SUV ever marketed by Oldsmobile, the Bravada was the first light truck offered by General Motors outside of the Chevrolet and GMC divisions since 1924. The flagship of the GM midsize SUV line, the Bravada served as the most luxurious GM SUV prior to the introduction of the GMC Yukon Denali and Cadillac Escalade.
The first two generations of the Bravada were derived from the Chevrolet (S-10) Blazer and GMC Jimmy, offered solely as a five-door wagon. The third generation of the model line adopted a dedicated SUV platform, shared with the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and GMC Envoy. Coinciding with the 2004 retirement of the Oldsmobile brand, GM rebranded the Bravada from 2005 to 2009 as the Buick Rainier and the Saab 9-7X (becoming the first SUV for both brands).
First generation (1991–1994)
For 1991, Oldsmobile introduced the Bravada as its first-ever sport-utility vehicle. Launched alongside the newly introduced four-door version of the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer, the Bravada was the first Oldsmobile truck-based vehicle since the 1920s. In contrast to its divisional counterparts, the Bravada was sold only as a four-door SUV; no two-door body nor any pickup truck version was produced. The first generation was sold exclusively in the United States.
The first luxury SUV produced by GM, the Bravada was designed with its a distinctive exterior separate from its divisional counterparts. In contrast to the larger Jeep Grand Wagoneer (discontinued after 1991), the Bravada was not fitted with wagon-style woodgrain exterior trim; instead, the body adopted a nearly monochromatic appearance with lower body cladding (similar to the GMC Typhoon). A body-color headlight surround was styled with a traditional Oldsmobile split grille; aluminum wheels were standard equipment. Other standard features included standard remote keyless entry, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and the use of SmartTrak all-wheel drive.
As with its Chevrolet/GMC counterpart, the Bravada was fitted with a standard 4.3L V6; for 1992, its output was increased from 160 hp to 200 hp. In contrast to the part-time four-wheel drive system of the Blazer/Jimmy, the Bravada was fitted with SmartTrak full-time all-wheel drive. Shared with the GMC Typhoon and the AWD Astro/Safari vans, SmartTrak used a BorgWarner 4472 transfer case; though forgoing low-range gearing, the system offered a 65%/35% rear/front torque split, shifting it when the system detected slippage.
During its production, the first-generation Bravada underwent minor detail changes. For 1992, the instrument panel was revised to further distinguish itself from the Blazer/Jimmy. For 1993, an overhead console was added (including a compass, temperature, and reading lights). As an option, a Gold package featured gold-colored badging and wheels.

- Summary: Front Control arm broke at the frame. There is a recall for this control arm issue for a 2002 Bravada but, my vin was not included. 01V126000 is the NHTSA. The control arms fractured causing separation from the frame. Bravada is at service shop and they have confirmed the frame separation from control arm. This is very dangerous and has caused it to be unsafe and deadly.

- Summary: I was merging onto the interstate going approximately 35 mph, I spun out on black ice across three lanes of traffic and smashed into the guard rail. The airbags DID NOT deploy during this accident, even when the car rolled back and hit the wall again. Since the airbags did not deploy, I suffered trauma to my chin and inside my mouth. I have facial cellulitis, and I needed to receive 3 stitches inside my mouth to stop the bleeding. This happened because my face hit the steering wheel, rather than being protected by the airbag. There were no warning lights on the vehicle prior to failure. The airbags not deploying could have potentially injured me greatly if I had been going any faster.

Your bravada sounds like a great vehicle! I love how you've customized it with helper springs and air shocks, and the extra transmission cooler is a smart addition for all the towing you do. It's impressive that you can drive in up to 22 inches of snow with your 4 inch lift. A plow would be a great addition for next winter. It's great that your bravada is not only a workhorse, but also a good family vehicle. Thanks for sharing your experience with it!

I'm really excited to go anywhere in my Olds! It has great pickup on the freeway and the ride is super smooth for an SUV. The fuel economy is okay, but I've found that if I keep my foot light and check my overhead computer for instant gas mileage, it really helps. Plus, the styling is absolutely one of a kind and I have every option available. It's just perfect!

Hi there! I just wanted to share some information about my truck. It's a 2002 model with only 75k miles on it, and I'm happy to say that it's still running great! I've towed boats and trailers with it, and it's never given me any problems. I recently passed inspection in Virginia, and the original brakes and tires are still going strong. The only issue I've had was with the headlamps, but those were easily replaced. I think it's an excellent product, especially since Oldsmobile only had 6 options in 03 and this truck had everything else as standard, plus 60 months of zero financing. I've owned the car since 2004 - I purchased it from CarMax with 24,000 miles on it and now have 60,000. I've haven't had single problem with the vehicle. I've kept up with regular maintenance. It's been a remarkably safe, reliable, and strong vehicle. The exterior looks like new. I haven't used it to tow anything, however, it has a strong engine that will move quickly at all speed ranges. It's great on snow and gravel roads. I haven't taken it off road, but in 6 inch mud it crawls along fine. I wish Olds didn't fold - they are the highest quality GM make aside from Cadillac in my eyes.

I bought my 2000 Bravada used in the winter of 2008 with 65,000 miles, and I have been pleasantly surprised by its reliability. Despite reading some negative reviews, I have found it to be one of the most dependable cars I've ever owned. I only had to replace the ABS on one of the wheels a few weeks ago, and other than that, it has just been routine maintenance. I highly recommend giving it a try for yourself, as I believe it all depends on the vehicle. In my experience, it has been terrific to drive in snow and rain, and it has plenty of cargo space. The only downside is that it could have better gas mileage, but I can't think of any other complaints. Overall, it's a fun car to drive and own!

As someone who has owned over 40 vehicles, including 3 Bravadas, I can confidently say that this is the worst vehicle I have ever owned. Despite purchasing it used with only 8K miles on it, I experienced nothing but trouble from day one. The fiberglass fan disintegrated and took out the radiator, which was just the beginning of a long and frustrating relationship with my GM service department. However, I was able to work with my dealer to make a fair deal on a Buick Rendezvous, which has proven to be a great vehicle. It's clear to me why GM decided to discontinue the line.

If you're considering purchasing this car, I would definitely recommend investing in an extended warranty (which I luckily did!). While I've put 66,000 miles on it, I've unfortunately had to make over $7,000 in repairs. The SmartTrak 4WD didn't engage when I needed it to at first, but then it always engaged. Additionally, I had to replace the crankcase, U joints, and deal with various electrical and body problems (including loose door hinges!). My 2002 Dodge Neon actually performed better in light snow than this car! I would advise against taking the risk of purchasing it.

Hello again! To all of you who wrote those glowing reviews, I appreciate your enthusiasm. However, I must be honest and say that in my opinion, the car is not without its faults. That being said, it is a beautiful car with luxurious appointments and it was wonderful for the two weeks that I didn't have to work on it. It shines like a new penny and the leather is soft. But, if it sits in your driveway looking pretty, it's like a trophy wife who chooses to sleep on the couch. As I type, I've spent another night tracing ground faults and bad parts, and I now suspect the key remote unit for some of this. I've already had it to the electrician for a week and $500, who fixed only the low voltage standard for the engine. Thank you for listening to my experience and I hope this helps you make an informed decision.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my Bravada. I bought it used with 55K miles on it and overall, I enjoyed driving it. However, I did have some issues with the electric system. Various warning lights would come on for no reason, especially the 'ck all wheel drive' light and the 'check engine' light. Despite this, it was fine to drive in the winter. Looking back, I wish I had considered other options before making my purchase.
