2000 Cadillac Deville problems
The Cadillac DeVille is a model name used by Cadillac over eight generations, originally used to designate a trim level of the 1949 Cadillac Series 62 and later to designate a standalone model in the brand range. The last model marketed specifically as a DeVille was the 2005 full-size sedan, at the time, Cadillac's largest model.
For 2006, the Deville nameplate was retired, when the model line was carried forward (with minor revisions) as the Cadillac DTS, using a nomenclature adopted by the Cadillac STS and CTS.
Early history
The name "DeVille" is derived from the French de la ville or de ville meaning "of the town". In French coach building parlance, a coupé de ville, from the French couper (to cut) i.e. shorten or reduce, was a short four-wheeled closed carriage with an inside seat for two and an outside seat for the driver and this smaller vehicle was intended for use in the town or city (de ville). An (unshortened) limousine or (in the United States) town car has a division between the passenger and driver compartments and if the driver's seat is outside it may be called a sedanca de ville or town car.
The first Cadillac "Coupe de Ville" was shown during the 1949 Motorama. It was built on a Cadillac Sixty Special chassis and featured a dummy air-scoop, chrome trim around front wheel openings, and a one-piece windshield and rear glass. The interior was black and trimmed in gray leather, including the headliner, to match the roof color. It was equipped with a telephone in the glove compartment, a vanity case and a secretarial pad in the rear armrest, power windows and highly decorative chrome interior trim. The prototype "Coupe de Ville" was used by GM President Charles E. Wilson until 1957 when he presented it to his secretary. At some time during this period it acquired a dark Vicodec roof. The prototype "Coupe de Ville" was found and restored in the 2010s; it was in a private collection in London, Ontario, Canada as of 2017.
The Cadillac Series 62 Coupe de Ville was introduced late in the 1949 model year. Along with the Buick Roadmaster Riviera, and the Oldsmobile 98 Holiday, it was among the first pillarless hardtop coupes ever produced. At US$3,496 ($44,768 in 2023 dollars ) it was only a dollar less than the Series 62 convertible, and like the convertible, it came with power windows standard. It was luxuriously trimmed, with leather upholstery and chrome 'bows' in the headliner to simulate the ribs of a convertible top. In its first year the Series 62 Coupe de Ville only sold 2,150 units. But 1950 sales more than doubled to 4507, and in 1951 sales more than doubled again to 10,241 exceeding the sales for the Series 62 Club Coupe that year. Also, in 1951, Coupe de Ville chrome script appeared on the rear roof pillar for the first time, to further distinguish it from the Series 62 Club Coupe.
In 1956 the Series 62 Coupe de Ville was joined by the Series 62 Sedan de Ville, Cadillac's first standard production 4-door hardtop. Similarly to the Coupe de Ville, it was also more expensive and more luxuriously trimmed than the standard 4-door Series 62. With 41,732 sold, it also easily outsold the Series 62 sedan in its very first year. Given their sales success, it was only natural that the Coupe de Ville and Sedan de Ville were moved to their own separate series in 1959, the Series 6300, being joined by a DeVille convertible in 1964.

Common 2000 Cadillac Deville problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2000 Cadillac Deville, several common problems have been reported:
- Fuel Sensor Problem: Owners have experienced issues with the fuel sensor causing gas levels to fluctuate from full to empty. This problem often requires the installation of a new fuel sensor to resolve the issue.
- Check Engine Light (P0420): The P0420 code indicates a catalyst problem, which typically necessitates replacing the entire converter to turn off the check engine light.
- Coolant and A/C Messages: Some owners have reported receiving "Check Coolant" and "Service A/C" messages despite no visible leaks or overheating. Adding refrigerant (freon) to the A/C system is often required to address this issue.
- Shaky Car at Speeds: Shaking between 60-68mph could indicate the need for tire rotation and balancing, although further inspection may be necessary to confirm the cause.
- Missing CD Player: Some models of the 2000 Cadillac Deville do not come equipped with a CD player, prompting owners to consider aftermarket options like a double din in-dash screen or flip-out unit.
- Power Steering Leak: Leaking power steering fluid from the pressure hose is a common issue, often requiring the replacement of the entire hose to fix the leak.
- Curled Dashboard: The dashboard curling up is a known problem in these cars. While some owners opt to glue it down, alternative methods may exist for addressing this issue effectively.
- HID Installation: Installing HID kits may require connecting them to the battery terminal under the hood, which can differ from other vehicles. Seeking guidance on the correct installation process is recommended.
These problems highlight some of the challenges faced by owners of the 2000 Cadillac Deville, emphasizing the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to issues to ensure the vehicle's optimal performance and longevity.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-05-09
- VIN: 1G6KD54Y6YU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: ENGINE BEGAN OVERHEATING AND TOOK IT TO OUR MECHANIC WHO REPLACED THE WATER PUMP. ENGINE CONTINUED TO OVERHEAT AND SAME MECHANIC REPLACED ALL OF THE UPPER SEALS. EVENTUALLY, A PRESSURE TEST AND CAMERA INSERT BY MY MECHANIC CONFIRMED A BLOWN HEAD GASKET. CONFIRMED THAT RESULT WITH PEPE CADILLAC IN WHITE PLAINS, NY. CHECKED THE PRICE TO HAVE THE HEAD GASKETS REPLACED, BUT SINCE THIS ENGINE HAS TO BE REMOVED FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE VEHICLE, THE COSTS ARE OUTRAGEOUS AND THE ONLY ACCEPTABLE FIX FOR THESE ALUMINUM HEADS ARE BOLTS RATHER THAN THE GM SERTS. BAD ENGINE DESIGN BY GM SINCE THEIR BOLTS WERE TOO SHORT AND THE BITE WAS NOT LARGE ENOUGH IN THE BLOCK TO PREVENT THE HEAD GASKETS FROM BLOWING. SAD EPITAPH FOR A CAR WITH ONLY 65K LIGHTLY DRIVEN MILES ON IT HAVING SPENT ALL OF IT'S OFF ROAD LIFE IN OUR GARAGE. AFTER MUCH RESEARCH, I WAS ABLE TO CONFIRM THAT THIS IS AN INHERENT PROBLEM WITH THE NORTHSTAR ENGINE DURING THAT PERIOD AND WAS FINALLY SOLVED AFTER 2004. GM KNOWS ABOUT THE ENGINEERING NORTHSTAR ENGINE PROBLEM BUT REFUSES TO ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR IT.

STEERING,AIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-09-30
- VIN: 1G6KF5796YU
- Components: STEERING,AIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: MY COMPLAINT IS ABOUT THE REMEDY FOR RECALL #14V355.THE JULY 2, 2014 LETTER TO [XXX] RE:NHTSA NOTIFICATION CAMPAIGN NO. 14V-355 FROM [XXX] , GM, STATES ON PAGE 3 THAT "THE TORQUE PERFORMANCE OF THE IGNITION SYSTEM MAY BE INSUFFICIENT TO RESIST ENERGY GENERATED WHEN THE VEHICLE GOES OFF ROAD OR EXPERIENCES SOME OTHER JARRING EVENT". THIS IS THE SAME IGNITION SWITCH THAT GM HID FROM THE PUBLIC FOR YEARS WHICH RESULTED IN 196 CLAIMS FOR DEATH, 116 CATASTROPHIC INJURIES AND 1,460 OTHER INJURIES. INSTEAD OF REPLACING THE FAULTY IGNITION SWITCH FOR THE RECALL, YOUR ORGANIZATION IS ALLOWING GM TO BLOCK THE KEY FROM BEING PLACED ON A KEY RING WITH HOUSE KEYS, THE REMOTE FOB THAT COMES WITH THE VEHICLE TO OPERATE DOOR LOCKS, SEAT POSITIONING, TRUNK RELEASE AND PANIC ALARM. AND THE GM PROVIDED CADILLAC MEDALLION THAT IS USED TO RETURN THE KEY TO ME IF IT BECOMES LOST. MOST PEOPLE NEED TO KEEP HOUSE KEYS ON THE CAR KEY RING, AND THE FOB IS INTEGRAL TO USING THE VEHICLE. THE RECALL FIX BEING ALLOWED BY YOUR AGENCY IS DANGEROUS AND WRONG. SUBSEQUENT OWNERS OF THE VEHICLES WILL NOT KNOW ABOUT THE RECALL AND POP THE LITTLE PIECE OF PLASTIC OUT OF THE KEY HOLE AND ATTACH ALL OF THEIR KEYS ON ONE KEY RING. FOR CURRENT OWNERS, THIS TAKES AWAY ONE OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE VEHICLE, THE FOB USAGE AND MAKES LIFE MORE DIFFICULT HAVING TO KEEP TRACK OF A SINGLE CAR KEY AND THEIR KEY RING WITH ESSENTIAL KEYS ON IT. ACCORDING TO THE WASHINGTON POST, GM KNEW ABOUT THE DEFECT AND CHANGED THE IGNITION SWITCH PART IN NEWER VEHICLES USING THE SAME PART NUMBER TO AVOID A RECALL AS PEOPLE WERE INJURED AND DIED. GM'S FIX LEAVES MY CAR WITH ITS DEFECTIVE IGNITION SWITCH WHICH IS STILL SUBJECT TO CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. WHO ARE YOU PROTECTING? GM? NOT ME AND I AM TERRIFIED. I WANT MY IGNITION SWITCH REPLACED WITH ONE THAT IS PROPERLY DESIGNED AND MANUFACTURED FOR THE SAFE USE OF MY VEHICLE. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

2000 Cadillac Deville recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2000 Cadillac Deville.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
- Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2011 Buick Lucerne, 2000-2005 Cadillac DeVille, 2006-2011 Cadillac DTS, 2006-2014 Chevrolet Impala, and 2006-2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the weight on the key ring and road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Additionally, a key knocked out of the run position will cause loss of engine power, power steering, and power braking, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 23, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-458-8006 (Cadillac), and 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet). GM's number for this recall is 14299.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: SEAT BELTS:FRONT:RETRACTOR
- Summary: CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES CONTAIN DRIVER AND FRONT PASSENGER LAP AND/OR SHOULDER BELT RETRACTORS THAT MAY NOT REMAIN LOCKED UP AS DESIGNED DURING A CRASH IN WHICH THE BELT PRETENSIONERS DEPLOY.
- Consequence: IN SUCH A CRASH, THIS COULD RESULT IN AN INCREASE IN INJURY FOR THAT OCCUPANT.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A RETAINER KIT IN THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SAFETY BELT PRETENSIONER. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JANUARY 31, 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-800-458-8006.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: SEAT BELTS:FRONT:BUCKLE ASSEMBLY
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES, HEARSE, AND LIMOUSINES. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS NO. 209, "SEAT BELT ASSEMBLIES." THESE VEHICLES HAVE SEAT BELTS THAT MAY NOT MEET THE 30-POUND PUSH BUTTON RELEASE EFFORT REQUIREMENT OF THE STANDARD.
- Consequence: HIGH RELEASE EFFORTS COULD MAKE IT MORE DIFFICULT FOR A CRASH VICTIM TO RELEASE THE BELT AND EXIT THE VEHICLE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE SEAT BELTS AND, IF NECESSARY, MODIFY THE LATCH PLATES OR REPLACE THE RETRACTOR. DEALERS WILL ALSO ADD "SNAP ON" LATCH CLIPS TO ELIMINATE THE POTENTIAL OF INVERTED LATCH PLATE INSERTION. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS BEING CONDUCTED IN PHASES. THE FIRST PHASE BEGAN MAY 29, 2001, AND THE SECOND PHASE BEGAN JULY 6, 2001.
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE INTERNAL FLUID LEAKS IN THE BRAKE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT.
- Consequence: WHEN THE REAR BRAKE PROPORTIONING, ANTILOCK BRAKE, TRACTION CONTROL, OR STABILITY CONTROL FEATURE IS ACTIVATED IN SOME DRIVING SITUATIONS, THE FEATURE MAY NOT PERFORM AS DESIGNED.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE ABS HYDRAULIC MODULATOR UNIT AND IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE HYDRAULIC MODULATOR.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: LIMOUSINES. DURING NORMAL ENGINE ROLL, THE PLASTIC END FITTING OF THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE COULD CONTACT THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER AND FRACTURE. THIS DOES NOT MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS NO. 124, "ACCELERATOR CONTROL SYSTEMS."
- Consequence: THE FRACTURE COULD PREVENT FULL CLOSING OF THE THROTTLE AND CAUSE A SMALL INCREASE IN ENGINE RPM IN DRIVE WITH THE BRAKE APPLIED.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW CRUISE CONTROL BRACKET AND, IF NECESSARY, WILL REPLACE THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE.

I think the Cadillac is the best car in the world, with the most advanced technology. Features like Night Vision, Stabilitrack, and park ride assist are just a few examples. I used to have a Mercedes-Benz S600, but I found the comfort to be lacking and the performance less impressive than the DTS! Three months ago, I asked a Mercedes-Benz salesman about the difference between the Cadillac and the S600. He told me I would have to pay an extra $50,000 for the Mercedes. I think I'll stick with Cadillac for life!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with you. I recently took a ride from Houston, TX to Austin, TX and back, and I have to say, it was great! The fuel economy was superior, and I was able to average 29 mpg while driving at an average speed of 60 mph on the highway. Thanks for listening!

Powerful; great acceleration. This vehicle is a highway cruiser and very comfortable. I was pleasantly surprised by the great mileage, achieving 27 on the highway and 18-20 around town. Overall, it's a great vehicle!

I bought mine with 71k about a year ago. It now has 96k and I have only had to replace an egr valve. Although it does burn 1 quart between oil changes, which I have learned is typical from reading here. The gas mileage is great, getting 25 on the highway. It also has great punch when you need it. Recently, I had to replace the brakes all around for 350.00 with ceramic pads and the egr valve was about 200.00. Overall, I would definitely buy another one.

Great to hear that you've had excellent maintenance and repair experience so far! It's unfortunate that you had to replace a tie rod at only 24000 miles, but it's great to know that it hasn't affected the overall performance of your vehicle.

My wife took excellent care of her Cadillac, treating it with kid gloves and keeping it garaged from day one. However, at only 63K, it began overheating and we knew we had a problem. Our local mechanic performed what was known as the triple play, replacing the water pump, thermostat, and upper crossover gaskets. Unfortunately, it turned out that the engine's head gaskets were blown, and a local Cadillac dealer quoted me $7,500.00 to replace them. Although GM knew that some of their Northstar engines were blowing head gaskets, they failed to take any action. The issue was caused by the aluminum heads on steel blocks and temperature changes for the two different metals. Their bolts were too short, and the bite in the steel blocks didn't hold. Fortunately, Norm Huhn (huhnsolutions.com) held the patent on fixing that engine's problem, as well as sourcing a local Cadillac mechanic who knew how to properly fix the problem. It takes three days to fix the car since it has to be lifted off the engine once everything from the engine has been disconnected. Anyway, our 2000 Cadillac DHS Sedan Deville now runs just fine, just like the day my wife drove it out of the dealer's showroom. There is life after blown head gaskets on these Cadillacs, and it's just a matter of contacting Norm for his insert kit and finding a mechanic who knows how to do the job properly. Other than that and replacing most of the sensors, this car has a brand new life and much more to go. It only cost me $3K to replace the heads properly on this Northstar engine, and it runs great! The key takeaway is that with the right resources and expertise, it's possible to get your car back on the road and running like new again.

This premier car with the Northstar engine burns a quart of oil every 3000 miles. Additionally, within 50,000 miles, the CV drive was totally corroded and the front engine mount was torn. These issues are concerning and may impact the vehicle's overall performance. It is recommended that further investigation be conducted before making a purchase decision.

This car is nice and comfortable, however, it has had some reliability issues. The head lights, battery, rear lights, and oil pump have all required attention. Rest assured, these issues can be resolved with proper maintenance and care.

Reliability is unacceptable. Despite multiple repairs, including replacing the catalytic converter, re-programming the IPC module, replacing the A/C module, and adjusting the crank sensor, the vehicle has required significant service seven times in the past ten months. This level of performance is not up to our standards of quality and we will take immediate action to address the issue.

I am extremely disappointed with the vehicle. Despite over 20 trips to the dealership for repeat warranty work, I have not received any satisfaction. The navigation system caused the computer to fry three times before it was removed. The night vision never worked correctly, and all the windows fell out, among other issues. I find it surprising that Cadillac did not take any action, especially considering that I paid over 55K for the vehicle.
