2002 Oldsmobile Bravada problems

The Oldsmobile Bravada is a mid-size luxury SUV that was sold by Oldsmobile from 1991 to 2004. The only SUV ever marketed by Oldsmobile, the Bravada was the first light truck offered by General Motors outside of the Chevrolet and GMC divisions since 1924. The flagship of the GM midsize SUV line, the Bravada served as the most luxurious GM SUV prior to the introduction of the GMC Yukon Denali and Cadillac Escalade.

The first two generations of the Bravada were derived from the Chevrolet (S-10) Blazer and GMC Jimmy, offered solely as a five-door wagon. The third generation of the model line adopted a dedicated SUV platform, shared with the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and GMC Envoy. Coinciding with the 2004 retirement of the Oldsmobile brand, GM rebranded the Bravada from 2005 to 2009 as the Buick Rainier and the Saab 9-7X (becoming the first SUV for both brands).

First generation (1991–1994)

For 1991, Oldsmobile introduced the Bravada as its first-ever sport-utility vehicle. Launched alongside the newly introduced four-door version of the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer, the Bravada was the first Oldsmobile truck-based vehicle since the 1920s. In contrast to its divisional counterparts, the Bravada was sold only as a four-door SUV; no two-door body nor any pickup truck version was produced. The first generation was sold exclusively in the United States.

The first luxury SUV produced by GM, the Bravada was designed with its a distinctive exterior separate from its divisional counterparts. In contrast to the larger Jeep Grand Wagoneer (discontinued after 1991), the Bravada was not fitted with wagon-style woodgrain exterior trim; instead, the body adopted a nearly monochromatic appearance with lower body cladding (similar to the GMC Typhoon). A body-color headlight surround was styled with a traditional Oldsmobile split grille; aluminum wheels were standard equipment. Other standard features included standard remote keyless entry, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and the use of SmartTrak all-wheel drive.

As with its Chevrolet/GMC counterpart, the Bravada was fitted with a standard 4.3L V6; for 1992, its output was increased from 160 hp to 200 hp. In contrast to the part-time four-wheel drive system of the Blazer/Jimmy, the Bravada was fitted with SmartTrak full-time all-wheel drive. Shared with the GMC Typhoon and the AWD Astro/Safari vans, SmartTrak used a BorgWarner 4472 transfer case; though forgoing low-range gearing, the system offered a 65%/35% rear/front torque split, shifting it when the system detected slippage.

During its production, the first-generation Bravada underwent minor detail changes. For 1992, the instrument panel was revised to further distinguish itself from the Blazer/Jimmy. For 1993, an overhead console was added (including a compass, temperature, and reading lights). As an option, a Gold package featured gold-colored badging and wheels.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-26
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1GHDT13S822
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I was merging onto the interstate going approximately 35 mph, I spun out on black ice across three lanes of traffic and smashed into the guard rail. The airbags DID NOT deploy during this accident, even when the car rolled back and hit the wall again. Since the airbags did not deploy, I suffered trauma to my chin and inside my mouth. I have facial cellulitis, and I needed to receive 3 stitches inside my mouth to stop the bleeding. This happened because my face hit the steering wheel, rather than being protected by the airbag. There were no warning lights on the vehicle prior to failure. The airbags not deploying could have potentially injured me greatly if I had been going any faster.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-07-02
  • VIN: IGHDT13S522
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: WHILE SITTING AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT I NOTICED THE SERVICE AIR BAG LIGHT WAS ON. I HAD SEEN THIS BEFORE WHILE I WAS DRIVING BUT IT WAS ONLY A FLICKERING LIGHT AND NOT A STEADY LIGHT. AFTER DRIVING HOME I NOTICED THE LIGHT WAS AGAIN OFF. THIS HAPPENED AGAIN A FEW DAYS LATER, AND THE LIGHT CONTINUED TO BE ON FOR ABOUT A WEEK (WHEN THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING) AND THEN IT WENT OFF AGAIN. THIS TIME IT WAS OFF FOR ONLY ONE DAY. NOW THE LIGHT IS ON ALL THE TIME WHEN THE SUV IS RUNNING. I TOOK THE SUV INTO OUR MECHANIC AND HE TRIED TO PULL UP AN ERROR CODE. HE SAID THAT IT COULD BE A CORRODED WIRE OR IT COULD BE THE ENTIRE AIR BAG(S) NEED TO BE REPLACED. HE ALSO STATED THAT IF ONE AIR BAG IS NOT WORKING THAT NONE OF THE OTHERS WILL EITHER. THE PRICE QUOTED TO FIX THIS IS FROM $150 JUST TO SEE WHAT IS WRONG, AND UP TO $1200 TO REPLACE AIRBAG.

SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-11-09
  • VIN: 1GHDT13S022
  • Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: 2002 OLDS BRAVADA (WHICH WE HAVE OWNED SINCE 9/2004) WAS BEING DRIVEN BY MY TEENAGE SON (WITH 3 OTHER KIDS IN THE VEHICLE), AS HE LEFT A STOP SIGN, THE FRAME OF THE VEHICLE BROKE LOOSE FROM THE BODY, SEPARATING THE CONTROL ARMS FROM THE FRAME AND DROPPING THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. HE WAS TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 20MPH AT THE TIME OF INCIDENT. HE MANAGED TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHERE THE VEHICLE CAME TO REST IN A DITCH, A SEMI-SAFE DISTANCE FROM TRAFFIC. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED 11/10/12AM TO A NEARBY GM DEALERSHIP. THE ESTIMATED COST OF REPAIR BEGINS AT NEARLY $7000., WHICH WOULD EXCEED THE VEHICLES VALUE. THE GM DEALERSHIP, TO WHICH THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED, HAS ADVISED US NOT TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE AS IT WOULD BE TOO EXTENSIVE. TO FURTHER THAT STATEMENT, THE GM DEALERSHIP HAS DISCOURAGED US TO EVEN OBTAIN A FULL AND ACCURATE QUOTE AS THIS WOULD TAKE TOO MUCH TIME FOR A VEHICLE THAT SHOULD NEVER SEE THE ROAD AGAIN, AGREEABLY. TO QUOTE BOTH THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER AND THE GENERAL SERVICE MANAGER OF THE GM DEALERSHIP; "THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN A VEHICLE WITH AN ISSUE SUCH AS THIS." REPEATED ATTEMPTS TO REPORT THIS TO GM HAVE FAILED. IN EFFORTS TO MINIMIZE PERSONAL OPINIONS FROM THIS POST, I WILL ONLY SAY THIS IS UTTERLY UNACCEPTABLE ON THE PART OF GM, AND A SAFETY HAZARD TO UNSUSPECTING CUSTOMERS. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-09-01
  • VIN: 1GHDT13S022
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: THE CAR SHUTS OFF SUDDENLY AND ALL OF THE GAUGES LIGHT UP. THE CAR MUST BE RESTARTED, SOMETIMES MULTIPLE TIMES. THIS PRESENTS A DANGER AS THE CAR MAY SUDDENLY LOSE MOBILITY ON A HIGHWAY. IT SEEMS THAT THIS MAY BE RELATED TO MULTIPLE POSTINGS ON THE INTERNET THAT CLAIM THIS SYMPTOM IS CAUSED BY A VOLTAGE SPIKE TO THE COMPUTER GENERATED BY THE AIR SHOCKS. THIS CAR WAS BUILT SEPTEMBER 1,2001 AND WAS SUPPOSEDLY INCLUDED IN A RECALL BUT THE DEALER CLAIMS THAT THERE IS NO RECALL ON THIS CAR AND IF IT WAS REPAIRED UNDER THE RECALL, ONCE THE REPAIR IS DONE IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND IT ON THE GM COMPUTERS AND THE RECALL WOULD THEN NOT BE IN EFFECT FOR THIS VEHICLE. IF IT WAS REPAIRED AND THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTS, THESE VEHICLES SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM THE ROAD. *TR

2002 Oldsmobile Bravada recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 10 recalls for different components of the 2002 Oldsmobile Bravada.

2004-11-01
  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS
  • Summary: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, VIBRATION AND HEAT MAY CAUSE THE TAIL LAMP/STOP LAMP BULB TO LOOSEN IN ITS SOCKET. IF THIS OCCURS, THE BULB MAY FLICKER AND EVENTUALLY BECOME INOPERATIVE.
  • Consequence: AN INOPERATIVE BRAKE LAMP WILL NOT CONVEY THE DRIVER'S INTENTION OF STOPPING TO DRIVERS IN FOLLOWING VEHICLES, AND AN INOPERATIVE REAR TURN SIGNAL LAMP WILL NOT CONVEY THE DRIVER'S INTENTION TO TURN TO DRIVERS IN FOLLOWING VEHICLES. BOTH OF THESE FAILURES CAN INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE TAIL LAMP/STOP LAMP ASSEMBLIES, AND IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THEM. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 22, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537, BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080, OR GMC AT 1-866-996-9463.
2004-06-23
  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: SOME SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AN ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED AIR SUSPENSION (ECAS) HAVE A CONDITION IN WHICH THE ECAS MAY PRODUCE A BRIEF ELECTRICAL SPIKE WHILE THE VEHICLE IS OPERATING. THIS ELECTRICAL SPIKE CAN DISRUPT THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO STALL.
  • Consequence: IF THE SPIKE DAMAGES THE PCM, THE VEHICLE MAY NOT RESTART. IF THIS HAPPENS WHILE THE VEHICLE IS MOVING, A CRASH COULD OCCUR WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A WIRING HARNESS. THE RECALL WILL BEGIN ON AUGUST 19, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537 OR GMC AT 1-866-996-9463.
2004-04-28
  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: CERTAIN LIGHT DUTY PICKUP TRUCKS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES FAIL TO CONFORM TO FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 209, "SEAT BELT ASSEMBLIES." ONE OF THE TWO SENSORS IN THE DRIVER'S AND FRONT PASSENGER'S SEAT BELT RETRACTORS COULD BE INOPERATIVE. Negative 2002 Oldsmobile Bravada car reviews

  1. Marcel Quigley 2025-01-01

My wife and I bought this vehicle with the hope of having peace of mind, but unfortunately, we had a different experience. In the 1 1/2 years of ownership, our Bravada has spent over 100 documented days in the service shop due to various issues such as doors being racked, bad A arm, bad heated seats, air and heat not working, replaced throttle body, worn weatherstrip, hesitation, bucking, bad transfer case control module affecting the AWD, fading rubber trim, and replaced brake pads and rotors at 20,000 mi. Despite all these issues, we were able to take our case to court and won. If you ever face similar problems, don't be afraid to go for it.

I've had my bravada for nine months and unfortunately, I've had to have it towed to the dealership three times due to the engine and power loss while driving. The dealership tried a few things to fix the issue, including changing the wheel-speed sensor and even giving me a new engine. However, the problem persisted and on the third visit, they were unable to find anything wrong. Unless Oldsmobile/GM can rectify my problem, my next stop will be to trade it in.

Congratulations on your first SUV! It's great to hear that you're enjoying driving it. However, I understand that SUVs can be quite thirsty when it comes to fuel consumption. In addition, you mentioned that the ride can be a bit bumpy on longer trips due to the slight sway of the vehicle. Despite these minor issues, it's good to know that the SUV is smooth and awesome to drive. The exterior looks good, and it's great that you love it. Overall, it sounds like you have a luxurious and competitive car that you're really happy with!

I have owned several vehicles over the years and have generally been a loyal GM customer. However, my recent experience with the Bravada has left me feeling disappointed and frustrated. Unfortunately, I have spent over $4000 on repairs for this vehicle, which is more than I have spent on all of my other vehicles combined. It seems that every time I fix one thing, something else breaks down. While I am sad to say goodbye to GM, I am now considering other options. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Although I bought this car with 80,000 miles and it initially met my needs, I have unfortunately experienced some significant mechanical issues. The transfer case has sustained damage and requires replacement, which will cost $1700 excluding labor. As a result, I am currently unable to drive the car and this has caused some inconvenience for me as I am on a fixed income. In the future, I will be more cautious when considering purchasing a discontinued brand. However, I am confident that I will be able to find a reliable vehicle that meets my needs.

  1. Jackson Collier 2025-01-04

I'm glad to hear that you and your wife have enjoyed this car! Although you did have a problem with the AWD early on, it's great to know that it was fixed under warranty and you haven't had any further issues. It sounds like the car is very comfortable for long trips, although you wish the mpg was better on the highway and in town. Despite some issues with the mirrors, it's clear that you really enjoy driving this car. It's impressive that it handles so well for a large vehicle and has better acceleration than any SUV you've driven. It's a shame that GM decided to end the Olds line, especially since this car is such a great design. If you could buy another, you definitely would!

  2. Gus Torphy 2024-11-05

I did a full round search of all of the brands, and I was surprised to find that the Olds was the most appealing in nearly every category. It has the most powerful powertrain of any vehicle in its class, including the V8's, not to mention the better gas mileage of an inline 6. The ride quality is superb on the air-ride rear suspension and Bilstein Shocks. The leather seating is also superb, even compared to its foreign counterparts.

  3. Leopoldo Harber 2024-10-05

The vehicle has been superb! I haven't found any defects so far, and I'm quite picky. I chose the Baravada over the Envoy and Trailblazer because of its better looks, nicer seats, air suspension, and better warranty.

  4. Jimmie Crist 2024-09-24

I purchased my vehicle through a no-interest program and had a few minor issues, but thankfully they were all covered. Recently, at 79,000 miles, the left front hub failed, and at 81,000 miles, the right front hub failed. I had the left hub repaired by the dealer for $550, while I repaired the right hub for $180. It's important to keep an eye on the brakes as I had to replace them at 80,000 miles, including new rotors all around. During each inspection, I was informed that they were getting close, but unfortunately, the inside pads were worn much more than the outer ones, and I should have replaced them between 60-70,000 miles. Additionally, the sunroof track disintegrated in year 6, but it still works. I'm hoping to get another 80-100,000 miles out of it.

  5. Paris Rolfson 2024-08-19

My mom purchased this car at around 75K miles. Unfortunately, the rear air compressor did not work and it sagged, so we had to switch to regular shocks. At around 100K miles, the engine coils started to malfunction, and we have had to replace 3 out of the 6 so far, as they apparently do not last very long. I have been driving this car since I left for college about a year ago. Unfortunately, the A/C no longer works and the car shakes every time I turn it on. The engine even turns on sometimes due to a bad compressor. Currently, the car has an issue where, in very cold weather, it will give a
