2002 Lincoln Blackwood problems

lincoln logo

The Lincoln Blackwood is a luxury pickup truck that was marketed by the Lincoln division of Ford Motor Company for the 2002 model year. The first pickup truck marketed by Lincoln, the Blackwood was derived from the Ford F-150 SuperCrew and the Lincoln Navigator. Drawing its name from its simulated black woodgrain cargo box, the Blackwood was offered solely with a black-painted exterior.

Although the concept vehicle had a positive public reception, the production Blackwood fell far under sales projections in the United States and Mexico. After the 2002 model year, the Blackwood was discontinued in the United States, with a short run of 2003 models produced for Mexico. In total, only 3,383 units were produced, making it both the rarest and shortest-produced Lincoln model line. For 2006, Lincoln entered the pickup truck segment for a second time with the Lincoln Mark LT, again based on the Ford F-150.

The first Lincoln vehicle manufactured exclusively outside of the state of Michigan since 1958, the Blackwood was assembled by Ford at its Kansas City Assembly facility in Claycomo, Missouri, alongside the F-150 from August 2001 to December 2002.

Common 2002 Lincoln Blackwood problems

The 2002 Lincoln Blackwood was a unique luxury truck that was in production for only one year, which made it quite the flop. Despite its unique styling and luxurious features, the Blackwood had several common problems that affected its reliability and functionality.

One of the most common issues reported by owners was the lack of power adjustability for the front seats. While the seats were heated and ventilated, they were not power-adjustable, which was considered unusual for a luxury vehicle with a price tag of $54,495.

Another issue that affected the Blackwood's functionality was the small cargo area. The cargo bed area, which Lincoln referred to as a "trunk," measured only 27 cubic feet and was carpeted, making it unsuitable for hauling heavy or dirty items. The powered tonneau cover, LED bed lighting strips, stainless steel cargo walls, split-open barn door tailgate, and carpeted cargo bed area were all designed for luxury, but they limited the truck's versatility and practicality.

In addition to these issues, the Blackwood's reliability was also a concern. While there is no comprehensive list of common problems or repairs for the 2002 Lincoln Blackwood, many owners reported various issues that affected their vehicles' performance and longevity.

The Blackwood's fuel efficiency was also a concern for some owners. While one owner reported that fuel mileage was not bad after installing a superchip, others may have found the Blackwood's fuel consumption to be a drawback.

Overall, the 2002 Lincoln Blackwood was a unique and luxurious vehicle, but it was plagued by several common problems that affected its reliability, functionality, and practicality. While the truck's rarity has contributed to its value retention, it remains a niche product with limited demand.

2002 Lincoln Blackwood engine

What engine is in the 2002 Lincoln Blackwood?

5.4 L V82002 Lincoln Blackwood / Engine

Powertrain details. Shared with the Navigator, the Blackwood is fitted with a 5.4L V8, producing 300 hp. In place of the SOHC 16-valve Triton V8 used by the F-150, the Blackwood used the DOHC 32-valve InTech V8 used by Lincoln; the engine was paired to a 4-speed automatic transmission.

Why did the Lincoln Blackwood fail?

It had the potential for success, but the Lincoln Blackwood lacked practicality and off-road ability in a pickup truck market that cried out for both. Lincoln's 21st century did not get off to a good start. Sales of the once-dominant American brand decreased by about 25% in the first two years of the new millennium.

How many 2002 Lincoln Blackwood were made?

3,356 Blackwoods

Lincoln killed its luxury pickup after just one model year, and a grand total of 3,356 Blackwoods were built.

When did they stop making the Lincoln Blackwood?

Lincoln reportedly planned to sell 10,000 a year but canceled the Blackwood after building fewer than 3,500. But just because 2002 was a different time doesn't mean the Blackwood doesn't still have some cool features.

Positive 2002 Lincoln Blackwood car reviews

  1. Earl Waters 2025-01-09

I feel incredibly lucky! My dealer, Pacific Ford in Long Beach, California, was offering a $20,000 discount on the Blackwood - that's right, $20,000! Now I'm driving a $54,000 truck with a $34,000 price tag. Ford has created an amazing vehicle and I'm so happy that I was in the right place at the right time to pick one up. If you're considering buying or leasing one (only 10,000 were produced), bring along your favorite CD and pop it in on your test drive. If the truck or ride doesn't sell you, the stereo system definitely will!

  2. Hilton Cruickshank 2025-01-09

I am a General Motors enthusiast who was disappointed to learn that the Cadillac EXT was built in Mexico. However, I decided to check out the Blackwood and fell in love with it immediately. I drove it home as its proud new owner and am thrilled to show it off to anyone who wants to see it. The Blackwood is flawlessly designed and absolutely beautiful.

  3. Fern Zulauf 2024-11-14

This is a fantastic looking Navigator! It turns heads everywhere you go with its great looks and impressive size. Not only does it look great, but it also drives like a dream.

  4. Carmelo Bartoletti 2024-11-09

It's a shame that the price point of this fantastic ride is out of reach for most people. I've owned a lot of cars, but this one really stands out with its sweet 32-valve engine. Once you break it in, you can expect around 16mpg for gas mileage. The big auto transmission is a dream to drive.

  5. Macey Terry 2024-11-04

Driving this 'truck' is an absolute joy. It has plenty of room for all passengers, and the steering is solid, accurate, and responsive. Even at high speeds, the 'truck' handles with agility. In town, the vehicle can maneuver easily in and out of tight spaces, despite its size. This 'truck' has an aftermarket supercharger that adds about 100 hp, yet it still feels like it could handle an additional 100 hp. It's hard to call it a truck, though, with the bed so nicely detailed. I don't ever see myself throwing bales of hay in the back. However, with the power tonneau cover, I do use the back to carry the things that usually collect in the back seat.
