2004 Oldsmobile Bravada problems
The Oldsmobile Bravada is a mid-size luxury SUV that was sold by Oldsmobile from 1991 to 2004. The only SUV ever marketed by Oldsmobile, the Bravada was the first light truck offered by General Motors outside of the Chevrolet and GMC divisions since 1924. The flagship of the GM midsize SUV line, the Bravada served as the most luxurious GM SUV prior to the introduction of the GMC Yukon Denali and Cadillac Escalade.
The first two generations of the Bravada were derived from the Chevrolet (S-10) Blazer and GMC Jimmy, offered solely as a five-door wagon. The third generation of the model line adopted a dedicated SUV platform, shared with the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and GMC Envoy. Coinciding with the 2004 retirement of the Oldsmobile brand, GM rebranded the Bravada from 2005 to 2009 as the Buick Rainier and the Saab 9-7X (becoming the first SUV for both brands).
First generation (1991–1994)
For 1991, Oldsmobile introduced the Bravada as its first-ever sport-utility vehicle. Launched alongside the newly introduced four-door version of the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer, the Bravada was the first Oldsmobile truck-based vehicle since the 1920s. In contrast to its divisional counterparts, the Bravada was sold only as a four-door SUV; no two-door body nor any pickup truck version was produced. The first generation was sold exclusively in the United States.
The first luxury SUV produced by GM, the Bravada was designed with its a distinctive exterior separate from its divisional counterparts. In contrast to the larger Jeep Grand Wagoneer (discontinued after 1991), the Bravada was not fitted with wagon-style woodgrain exterior trim; instead, the body adopted a nearly monochromatic appearance with lower body cladding (similar to the GMC Typhoon). A body-color headlight surround was styled with a traditional Oldsmobile split grille; aluminum wheels were standard equipment. Other standard features included standard remote keyless entry, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and the use of SmartTrak all-wheel drive.
As with its Chevrolet/GMC counterpart, the Bravada was fitted with a standard 4.3L V6; for 1992, its output was increased from 160 hp to 200 hp. In contrast to the part-time four-wheel drive system of the Blazer/Jimmy, the Bravada was fitted with SmartTrak full-time all-wheel drive. Shared with the GMC Typhoon and the AWD Astro/Safari vans, SmartTrak used a BorgWarner 4472 transfer case; though forgoing low-range gearing, the system offered a 65%/35% rear/front torque split, shifting it when the system detected slippage.
During its production, the first-generation Bravada underwent minor detail changes. For 1992, the instrument panel was revised to further distinguish itself from the Blazer/Jimmy. For 1993, an overhead console was added (including a compass, temperature, and reading lights). As an option, a Gold package featured gold-colored badging and wheels.

Common 2004 Oldsmobile Bravada problems
The Oldsmobile Bravada, particularly the 2004 model, is known for several common problems that have been reported by owners. One of the most significant issues is related to the engine, with some owners reporting that the engine consumes oil at a higher rate than normal, which can lead to engine damage or failure. This issue is caused by worn piston rings and the recommended solution is to replace the rings or rebuild the engine. Another engine-related issue is a lack of power and poor performance, typically caused by a faulty fuel injector or a clogged fuel filter. The recommended solution is to clean or replace the affected components to restore the engine's performance.
Transmission-related issues are also common in the 2004 Oldsmobile Bravada. Some owners have reported problems with the transmission slipping or failing to shift properly, which is typically caused by a faulty transmission solenoid or a worn-out clutch. The recommended solution is to replace the affected component or rebuild the transmission.
Electrical system issues have also been reported by some owners of the 2004 Oldsmobile Bravada. These issues include malfunctioning gauges, warning lights, and power accessories, which are typically caused by faulty wiring or electrical shorts. The recommended solution is to repair or replace the affected components.
Suspension-related issues are also common in the 2004 Oldsmobile Bravada, with some owners reporting noise, vibration, and uneven tire wear. These issues are typically caused by worn suspension components, such as the shocks and struts, and the recommended solution is to replace the affected parts.
The 2004 Oldsmobile Bravada's brake system can also experience problems, including brake pads and rotor wear, brake fluid leaks, and ABS system malfunctions. The exhaust system can also experience leaks and rust, as well as catalytic converter failure and O2 sensor malfunctions. Body and interior issues such as rust and corrosion, power window and lock problems, and dashboard and trim cracking and fading can also be present in the Oldsmobile Bravada.
In conclusion, while the 2004 Oldsmobile Bravada can experience a range of problems, it can still be a reliable vehicle with proper maintenance and care. It is essential to keep up with routine maintenance and address any issues promptly to avoid more significant problems down the line. As with any vehicle, regular inspections, and repairs can help extend its life and improve its overall reliability.

IT ALSO DRASTICALLY REDUCES THE RPM, LOSING SPEED. THIS SCARES US CONSIDERING THAT OTHER VEHICLES MIGHT REAR END MY CAR. UNFORTUNATELY THE GM DEALERSHIP HOLDS OUR VEHICLE FOR MAYBE 2 DAYS AND DRIVES IT FOR A SHORT DISTANCE. SINCE THEY CANNOT FIND THE ISSUE AS IT IS RANDOM EVEN THOUGH THIS CONDITION AS DESCRIBED IN THEIR SERVICE BULLETIN SAYS THAT IT IS RANDOM, THE VEHICLE IS RETURNED SINCE GM WILL NOT PAY THEM. THEY WANT THE CONDITION T WORSEN BEFORE THEY FIX IT, PUTTING US IS HARMS WAY. I WOULD SUSPECT THIS HAPENS WITH THE TRAILBLAZER AND GMC ENVOY AS WELL.

- Summary: WHILE DRIVING ON CA HWY 18, OUR 2004 OLDS BRAVADA SPONTANEOUSLY CAUGHT FIRE. A PASSING MOTORIST SHOUTED TO MY HUSBAND THAT HIS CAR WAS ON FIRE. HE PULLED OVER; THE FIRE DEPT. RESPONDED. CAR WAS TOWED TO GM DEALER; USAA INS. DETERMINED THAT IT WAS TOTALED. IT WAS TOWED TO THEIR YARD IN NO. HOLLYWOOD WHERE IT NOW IS. GM HIRED AN ENGINEER TO CHECK THE CAR. GM THEN TOLD US THAT A PHOTO TAKEN AFTER THE FIRE & TOWS SHOWED THE TRANSMISSION FLUID DIP STICK HAD NOT BEEN PROPERLY SECURED & THIS CAUSED THE FIRE. THE CAR HAD ONE OIL CHANGE ABOUT 2 MONTHS PRIOR TO THE FIRE. IN WRITING, GM SAID "AFTER CAREFUL INVESTIGATION OF YOUR CASE, NONE OF THE AVAILABLE DATA SUGGESTS THAT THE PRODUCT ALLEGATION HAS ANY MERIT..." & REFERRED US BACK TO OUR INS. CO. USAA HIRED AN ENGINEER & THEIR CONCLUSION STATES: "THE CAUSE & ORIGIN OF THE FIRE WAS A FAILURE OF A POWER STEERING HOSE IN THE LOWER RIGHT OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THE FAILED HOSE SPRAYED POWER STEERING FLUID ON THE RIGHT SIDE EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER WHERE IT WAS IGNITED BY A SPARK FROM THE SPARK PLUGS AND/OR HEAT FROM THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER." I HAVE THE FULL REPORT WHICH ALSO STATES ""THE RIGHT UNDERSIDE OF THE VEHICLE WAS COVERED WITH POWER STEERING FLUID...THE POWER STEERING FLUID RESERVOIR WAS MELTED DOWNWARD FROM THE TOP. THE POWER STEERING HOSES IN THE LOWER RIGHT OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WERE DAMAGED. POWER STEERING FLUID SPRAY PATTERNS WERE FOUND BENEATH THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND ALONG THE FRONT OF THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. 2004 Oldsmobile Bravada recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2004 Oldsmobile Bravada.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:TURN SIGNAL
- Summary: ON CERTAIN TRUCKS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE DRIVER WISHING TO SIGNAL A TURN BY MOVING THE DIRECTIONAL SIGNAL LEVER, (UP OR DOWN) MAY CAUSE THE FRONT MARKER/TURN LIGHTS AND REAR TURN LIGHTS TO FLASH IN A MANNER SIMILAR TO HAZARD WARNING, RATHER THAN FLASHING ON THE DESIRED SIDE ONLY.
- Consequence: THE DRIVER MAY NOT BE ABLE TO CLEARLY SIGNAL THEIR INTENTIONS TO TURN, CHANGE TRAVEL LANES, OR POTENTIALLY WARN OTHERS OF AN IMPAIRED VEHICLE OPERATING CONDITION INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SUSPECT FLASHER MODULES WITH A NEW FLASHER MODULE DESIGNED WITH SEALED RELAYS AND MORE DURABLE CONTACT MATERIAL INSIDE OF THE RELAYS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 4, 2005. ISUZU BEGAN MAILING OWNER LETTERS ON AUGUST 4, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727, BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080, AND OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS
- Summary: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, VIBRATION AND HEAT MAY CAUSE THE TAIL LAMP/STOP LAMP BULB TO LOOSEN IN ITS SOCKET. IF THIS OCCURS, THE BULB MAY FLICKER AND EVENTUALLY BECOME INOPERATIVE.
- Consequence: AN INOPERATIVE BRAKE LAMP WILL NOT CONVEY THE DRIVER'S INTENTION OF STOPPING TO DRIVERS IN FOLLOWING VEHICLES, AND AN INOPERATIVE REAR TURN SIGNAL LAMP WILL NOT CONVEY THE DRIVER'S INTENTION TO TURN TO DRIVERS IN FOLLOWING VEHICLES. BOTH OF THESE FAILURES CAN INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE TAIL LAMP/STOP LAMP ASSEMBLIES, AND IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THEM. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 22, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537, BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080, OR GMC AT 1-866-996-9463.

I have a 2002 and it has been working out just fine.

Hi there! I just wanted to share some information about my truck. It's a 2002 model with only 75k miles on it, and I'm happy to say that it's still running great! I've towed boats and trailers with it, and it's never given me any problems. I recently passed inspection in Virginia, and the original brakes and tires are still going strong. The only issue I've had was with the headlamps, but those were easily replaced. I think it's an excellent product, especially since Oldsmobile only had 6 options in 03 and this truck had everything else as standard, plus 60 months of zero financing. Let me know if you have any questions!

Great deal for the money! This car handles really well and looks fantastic.

I bought my 2004 Bravada after riding in a friend's one. I was really impressed with how comfortable the ride was, so I had to get one of the last Bravadas made. Even with gas prices at $4.00, I won't give up the luxury of my Olds Bravada.

We purchased our 04' Bravada brand new in 2004 for approximately $37,000. After test driving several vehicles, including the Lincoln Navigator, Cadillac Escalade, BMW x5, and Acura MDX, we found that the Bravada outperformed them all. This SUV offers a quiet and smooth ride, power folding mirrors, a DVD player, voice-activated features, and a luxurious appearance. Although it is unfortunate that GM no longer produces the Oldsmobile division, I highly recommend the Bravada to anyone in search of a mid-size luxury SUV.

I love the ride of this SUV, but unfortunately, I have had to take it to the shop numerous times in the past 1 1/2 years for electrical problems. I am considering trading or selling it.

Hey there! I bought the vehicle back in June of 02 and sold it in October of 03. It had a bit of a quirky problem though. If the operator did a certain combination of movements with the key in the ignition, it would trigger the theft deterrent system and leave you stranded. Unfortunately, it happened to me three times and I had to have it towed each time. Onstar couldn't figure out what was causing it either. However, I did speak to someone who had the same problem with the GMC Envoy.

Hi there! I wanted to share that I recently had an issue with a metallic rattle coming from the left front quarter of my car. I took it to the shop and the forman rode with me to hear the noise. They were able to identify the issue as a front sway bar noise and the suspension guy fixed it by replacing both front stabilizer links. I'm happy to report that the noise is now gone! While I've had a few little things go wrong with my car, the dealer has always been great about fixing them for free. However, I'm starting to get a bit tired of having to take it in so often. I might hold onto the car until something else goes wrong. Thanks for listening!

This is such a comfortable and enjoyable ride, even when just cruising around town. The front end and LED rear lights give the Bravada a fierce look that not many SUVs have. The size is perfect for the performance I need from my truck - smaller than a Tahoe, but big enough to get other cars to move out of your way.
Paris Keeling 2024-02-16
The vehicle has some issues, including: a) not feeling very 'tight', b) reliability issues with windows, seats, and door locks, c) transmission not being very smooth, d) AWD making a grinding noise when turning sharply, e) mileage not being as good as advertised for an SUV, f) straight 6 not being as fast as the Jeep 8, g) engine not having the towing power of the Jeep 8, and h) the AC malfunctioning three times and not cooling properly. It's important to address these issues before they become bigger problems.
