1998 Oldsmobile Bravada problems

oldsmobile logo

The Oldsmobile Bravada is a mid-size luxury SUV that was sold by Oldsmobile from 1991 to 2004. The only SUV ever marketed by Oldsmobile, the Bravada was the first light truck offered by General Motors outside of the Chevrolet and GMC divisions since 1924. The flagship of the GM midsize SUV line, the Bravada served as the most luxurious GM SUV prior to the introduction of the GMC Yukon Denali and Cadillac Escalade.

The first two generations of the Bravada were derived from the Chevrolet (S-10) Blazer and GMC Jimmy, offered solely as a five-door wagon. The third generation of the model line adopted a dedicated SUV platform, shared with the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and GMC Envoy. Coinciding with the 2004 retirement of the Oldsmobile brand, GM rebranded the Bravada from 2005 to 2009 as the Buick Rainier and the Saab 9-7X (becoming the first SUV for both brands).

First generation (1991–1994)

For 1991, Oldsmobile introduced the Bravada as its first-ever sport-utility vehicle. Launched alongside the newly introduced four-door version of the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer, the Bravada was the first Oldsmobile truck-based vehicle since the 1920s. In contrast to its divisional counterparts, the Bravada was sold only as a four-door SUV; no two-door body nor any pickup truck version was produced. The first generation was sold exclusively in the United States.

The first luxury SUV produced by GM, the Bravada was designed with its a distinctive exterior separate from its divisional counterparts. In contrast to the larger Jeep Grand Wagoneer (discontinued after 1991), the Bravada was not fitted with wagon-style woodgrain exterior trim; instead, the body adopted a nearly monochromatic appearance with lower body cladding (similar to the GMC Typhoon). A body-color headlight surround was styled with a traditional Oldsmobile split grille; aluminum wheels were standard equipment. Other standard features included standard remote keyless entry, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and the use of SmartTrak all-wheel drive.

As with its Chevrolet/GMC counterpart, the Bravada was fitted with a standard 4.3L V6; for 1992, its output was increased from 160 hp to 200 hp. In contrast to the part-time four-wheel drive system of the Blazer/Jimmy, the Bravada was fitted with SmartTrak full-time all-wheel drive. Shared with the GMC Typhoon and the AWD Astro/Safari vans, SmartTrak used a BorgWarner 4472 transfer case; though forgoing low-range gearing, the system offered a 65%/35% rear/front torque split, shifting it when the system detected slippage.

During its production, the first-generation Bravada underwent minor detail changes. For 1992, the instrument panel was revised to further distinguish itself from the Blazer/Jimmy. For 1993, an overhead console was added (including a compass, temperature, and reading lights). As an option, a Gold package featured gold-colored badging and wheels.

Common 1998 Oldsmobile Bravada problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Oldsmobile Bravada 1998, common problems with this vehicle include:

  • 4WD Malfunction: Some owners faced issues with the 4-wheel drive not working. This problem was often attributed to encoder motor failures. Replacing the encoder motor and checking electrical connections at the TCCM were common troubleshooting steps. Additionally, proper fluid changes and ensuring the correct encoder motor for a 1998 Bravada were crucial in addressing this issue.
  • Air Compressor Failure for Rear Air Springs: Another common problem was the failure of the air compressor for rear air springs. This issue could lead to problems with the vehicle's suspension system and required attention to prevent further complications.
  • ABS Light Due to Brake System Control Unit Failure: Owners also reported instances where the ABS light illuminated due to brake system control unit failures. This issue could affect the vehicle's braking system and required prompt attention to ensure safe driving conditions.
  • Engine Misfires and Stalling: Fuel system problems, including issues with fuel injectors, fuel filter, or fuel pump, could lead to engine misfires and stalling. Proper maintenance and timely repairs were essential to address these issues and maintain the vehicle's performance.
  • Transmission Slipping: Some owners encountered problems with the transmission slipping or failing to shift properly. This issue was often linked to worn-out transmission solenoids or damaged torque converters, necessitating component replacements or transmission rebuilds for resolution.
  • Electrical System Malfunctions: Malfunctions in the electrical system, such as malfunctioning power windows, door locks, and interior lights, were reported. These issues were typically caused by faulty wiring or electrical shorts, requiring repairs or replacements of affected components for proper functionality.

These common problems highlight the importance of regular maintenance, prompt attention to issues, and the need for proper diagnosis and repairs to ensure the Oldsmobile Bravada 1998 operates reliably and safely.

Negative 1998 Oldsmobile Bravada car reviews

  1. Garrick Spinka 2024-10-03

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Saturn Vue that I purchased from a private owner. I drove it all the way from Ohio to AZ without any issues, which was great! After my arrival, I replaced the radiator and water pump, as well as the brake rotors and calipers before my next trip. The SmartTrak feature was really cool and helped me drive through the snow without any problems. I did notice a small rust spot around the gas tank refill, but it's just starting to bubble and I don't have any other issues with the vehicle. I'm planning on driving it for as long as possible, just like my previous GM vehicles. Currently, there are 84K miles on the Bravada. Thanks for reading!

  2. Rick Vandervort 2024-09-21

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share with you my experience with my Bravada, which I bought brand new in 1997. I take great care of it myself, making sure to do oil and filter changes every 2000 miles. I'm happy to report that I haven't had any major issues with the vehicle, just the usual maintenance. I recently hit the 50,000 mile mark and decided to do some upgrades, including a transmission flush, air conditioner recharge, rear end fluid change, new Monroe (Reflex) shocks, and new tires all around. I even checked the tranny tube for rust, as recommended, and everything looked great. Overall, I'm really pleased with how my Bravada has held up over the years. Thanks for listening!

  3. Stephan McDermott 2024-09-19

It seems like you had a rough ride and experienced a lot of shaking. That doesn't sound good.

  4. Wiley Botsford 2024-06-08

This car has had several issues since the beginning, including the transmission, front differential, bearings, and fuel injectors. Despite the repairs, it continues to require frequent and expensive maintenance, which is frustrating. However, I am confident in my ability to handle the situation and will continue to address any issues that arise. In the meantime, I am saving up for a new car that will provide me with more reliable transportation.

  5. Marco Bahringer 2024-05-19

I bought this truck used in 2000 and it's only been to the mechanic twice. Once for brakes and calipers, and the other for a sluggishness that was attributed to dirty fuel injectors (fixed with a $27 chemical that goes in the fuel tank). This car is our family's only one, and we absolutely love it. It has treated us great, and it feels like driving a luxury car. You should definitely consider getting one while you still can!

Positive 1998 Oldsmobile Bravada car reviews

  1. Kennith Rempel 2024-11-08

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to say that I'm so glad I purchased my Bravada about 15 months ago. Overall, it has been an absolutely wonderful experience driving it. Before owning an SUV, I never thought I would enjoy driving one, but now I'm hooked! While I still like my cars, I think I will always have an SUV to sit beside it. The handling is natural and the style puts you right up there with the other big-time wheelers, all at a very reasonable price and equal style. It always meets the look of many $40,000 - $50,000 SUVs you see riding around. I bought mine for $6,000 and it still sits with the most expensive SUVs in the city. It has received rave compliments from everyone who has seen and experienced it. Thanks for listening!

I'm so glad and grateful that I purchased my Bravada at an excellent price four years ago. When I first bought it, it needed new brakes and tires, but since then, I haven't had to do anything else to the car. Recently, the service light came on, and even though I spent $1000 at the dealer, they were unable to fix it. Despite this, the car runs perfectly! The paint is still in great condition, and it looks better than many newer cars on the road. I'm also impressed with all the extra features it came with, including the power moon roof, driver seat windows, and mirrors, which all work flawlessly!

Hello! We bought this vehicle from a dealer who was aware of some issues. One of the common problems is the Dex cool issue, which used to damage the radiator and heater cores. However, we have a great mechanic who helped us spend $2000 to improve the vehicle, and now it seems to be in great shape. By the way, it's important to change all the fluids periodically, even if the manufacturer doesn't recommend it. Also, you should expect to clean the injector manifold at about 75,000 miles and replace the intake manifold gasket, as they tend to leak around that time. Hope this helps!

I love this car! It's been with me for six years now and it hasn't given me any trouble. I've only had to replace the ball joints and add freon to the air conditioner, but that's about it. I love driving it around town and taking it to my lake cabin. It's a great hauler and I plan on keeping it until it drops.

This is my second Bravada. My other one, a 1993, gets much better mileage by the way. It's the perfect size for our family - not too big and bulky like the Suburban and Ford's. The comfort is exceptional and the drivability is great, with plenty of power for the mountains of Colorado. The style is also a plus. My only negative is the gas mileage, which is less than 16 MPG.
