1997 Oldsmobile Bravada problems

The Oldsmobile Bravada is a mid-size luxury SUV that was sold by Oldsmobile from 1991 to 2004. The only SUV ever marketed by Oldsmobile, the Bravada was the first light truck offered by General Motors outside of the Chevrolet and GMC divisions since 1924. The flagship of the GM midsize SUV line, the Bravada served as the most luxurious GM SUV prior to the introduction of the GMC Yukon Denali and Cadillac Escalade.

The first two generations of the Bravada were derived from the Chevrolet (S-10) Blazer and GMC Jimmy, offered solely as a five-door wagon. The third generation of the model line adopted a dedicated SUV platform, shared with the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and GMC Envoy. Coinciding with the 2004 retirement of the Oldsmobile brand, GM rebranded the Bravada from 2005 to 2009 as the Buick Rainier and the Saab 9-7X (becoming the first SUV for both brands).

First generation (1991–1994)

For 1991, Oldsmobile introduced the Bravada as its first-ever sport-utility vehicle. Launched alongside the newly introduced four-door version of the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer, the Bravada was the first Oldsmobile truck-based vehicle since the 1920s. In contrast to its divisional counterparts, the Bravada was sold only as a four-door SUV; no two-door body nor any pickup truck version was produced. The first generation was sold exclusively in the United States.

The first luxury SUV produced by GM, the Bravada was designed with its a distinctive exterior separate from its divisional counterparts. In contrast to the larger Jeep Grand Wagoneer (discontinued after 1991), the Bravada was not fitted with wagon-style woodgrain exterior trim; instead, the body adopted a nearly monochromatic appearance with lower body cladding (similar to the GMC Typhoon). A body-color headlight surround was styled with a traditional Oldsmobile split grille; aluminum wheels were standard equipment. Other standard features included standard remote keyless entry, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and the use of SmartTrak all-wheel drive.

As with its Chevrolet/GMC counterpart, the Bravada was fitted with a standard 4.3L V6; for 1992, its output was increased from 160 hp to 200 hp. In contrast to the part-time four-wheel drive system of the Blazer/Jimmy, the Bravada was fitted with SmartTrak full-time all-wheel drive. Shared with the GMC Typhoon and the AWD Astro/Safari vans, SmartTrak used a BorgWarner 4472 transfer case; though forgoing low-range gearing, the system offered a 65%/35% rear/front torque split, shifting it when the system detected slippage.

During its production, the first-generation Bravada underwent minor detail changes. For 1992, the instrument panel was revised to further distinguish itself from the Blazer/Jimmy. For 1993, an overhead console was added (including a compass, temperature, and reading lights). As an option, a Gold package featured gold-colored badging and wheels.

Common 1997 Oldsmobile Bravada problems

The Oldsmobile Bravada, a mid-size SUV produced between 1991 and 2004, has a few common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues are related to the air compressor for rear air springs, fuel filter, and the brake system control unit.

  1. Air Compressor for Rear Air Springs May Fail: The Bravada's rear air springs are inflated by an air compressor, which can fail over time. This can result in uneven tire wear, poor handling, and reduced ride comfort. The air compressor may need to be replaced to resolve this issue.
  2. Replace Fuel Filter Every 30,000 to Prevent Fuel Pump Failure: The fuel filter in the Bravada should be replaced every 30,000 miles to prevent fuel pump failure. A clogged fuel filter can increase the workload on the fuel pump, causing it to wear out prematurely. Replacing the fuel filter regularly can help extend the life of the fuel pump and prevent fuel system issues.
  3. ABS Light Due to Brake System Control Unit Failure: The ABS light may illuminate on the dashboard due to a failure in the brake system control unit. This can lead to a loss of anti-lock braking functionality and reduced braking performance. The brake system control unit may need to be replaced to resolve this issue.

In addition to these common problems, the 1997 Oldsmobile Bravada may also experience issues with the fuel pump. A faulty ignition switch can cause the fuel pump to not receive 12 volts of power, preventing the fuel pump from running. This can result in a no-start condition. The fuel pump relay may also be the culprit, as it may not be receiving power from the Vehicle Control Module (VCM).

To diagnose a no-start condition, it is recommended to check for 12 volts of power at the fuel pump relay and the ignition switch. If power is present at the relay but not at the ignition switch, the ignition switch may need to be replaced. If power is not present at the relay, the VCM may need to be inspected for issues.

In summary, the Oldsmobile Bravada has several common problems that can affect its air suspension, fuel system, and brake system. Regular maintenance, such as replacing the fuel filter, can help prevent some of these issues. If a no-start condition is encountered, it is recommended to check for power at the fuel pump relay and ignition switch to diagnose the issue.

  • Summary: 97 OLDS BRAVADA RETRACTABLE SEAT BELTS HAVE NEVER WORKED PROPERLY, NOW DO NOT WORK ON EITHER DRIVER OR PASSENGER SIDE. SEATBELTS DO NOT "CATCH" DURING COLLISION AND JUST KEEP PULLING OUT OF HOUSING. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY NUMEROUS DEALERSHIPS THAT THIS IS A CHRONIC PROBLEM WITH THESE CARS, WHICH PROBABLY ALSO INCLUDE CHEVY BLAZERS AND GMC JIMMY'S. GM DID A RECALL IN '04 WHICH I WAS PROMISED WOULD RESOLVE THE PROBLEM, BUT IN A RECENT INCIDENT, MY SEATBELT DID NOT "CATCH" AND I HIT MY CHIN ON THE STEERING WHEEL. DEALER HAS VERIFIED THAT BOTH FRONT SEAT BELTS ARE NONFUNCTIONAL. THIS PROBLEM CANNOT BE EASILY RECOGNIZED UNTIL THERE IS AN ACCIDENT. HOW MANY BRAVADA, BLAZER, AND JIMMY OWNERS ARE DRIVING AROUND WITH THEIR SEATBELTS BUCKLED, NOT KNOWING THAT THEY DO NOT WORK AND WILL NOT PROTECT THEM IN A CRASH? HOW MANY COMPLAINTS HAS NHTSA GOTTEN, WRONGLY ASSUMING THOSE WERE REPAIRED BY THE RECALL? *NM

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-07-31
  • Fire: 1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: ON JULY 31, 2005 MY FAMILY AND I WERE TRAVELING HOME FROM MICHIGAN WE WERE 29 MILES FROM HOME WHEN OUR 1997 OLDSMOBILE BRAVADA CAUGHT FIRE. WE HAD BEEN TRAVELING DOWN THE HIGHWAY WITH A FIRE UNDER OUR SUV FOR SOME TIME AND WAS NOT AWARE OF IT. PARTS LITERALLY BEGAN TO FALL FROM UNDER THE TRUCK WHEN WE STOPPED THE TRUCK TO SEE WHAT HAD WENT WRONG WE NOTICED THE FIRE. EYE WITNESSES SAID THEY SAW FLAMES COMING FROM OUR VEHICLE BEFORE WE EVEN STOPPED. WHEN WE GOT OUT AND SAW THE FIRE WE BEGAN REMOVING OUR CHILDREN AS FAST AS WE COULD. WHEN THE LAST CHILD WAS REMOVED WE BEGAN TO RUN AWAY FROM THE TRUCK. BY THIS TIME THE TRUCK WAS FULLY ENGULFED IN FLAMES. THERE WAS NO SMELL OF GAS OR ANY WARNING TELLING US THAT ANYTHING WAS WRONG. WE WERE BLESSED TO COME OUT OF THIS ALIVE, BUT THAT MAY NOT BE THE CASE FOR OTHER FAMILIES. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION THAT CONSUMERS NEED TO BE AWARE OF IT COULD SAVE LIVES. ITS NOT RIGHT FOR MANUFACTURES TO PUT PEOPLES LIVES AT RISK FOR THE SAKE OF A FEW DOLLARS. I CAN NOT OR WILL NOT PUT THIS OUT OF MY MIND AS IF IT DIDN'T HAPPEN. PLEASE HELP ME GET THIS INFORMATION TO THE PUBLIC SO THAT THEY ARE AWARE. *JB

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-09-10
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: MY 1997 OLDSMOBILE BRAVADA HAD A PROBLEM WHERE THE CAR WOULD "DIE" ANYTIME AND THEN OUTOMATICALLY TURN BACK ON WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. THE SAME WOULD HAPPEN DURING CITY DRIVING BUT I WIOULD HAVE TO RE-START THE CAR. A VERY DANGEROUS OCCURRENCE IF I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF MAKING A TURN WHEN THE CAR WOULD SUDDENLY STOP. IT TURNED OUT TO BE THE IGNITION SWITCH THAT NEEDED REPLACEMENT AND THE DEALER SAID THAT THIS WAS BECOMING A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS KIND OF AUTOMOBILE (BRAVADA, BLAZER, JIMMY). I WAS FORTUNATE NOT TO HAVE HAD AN ACCIDENT BEFORE I TURNED INTO THE DEALERSHIP.*AK

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-11-03
  • VIN: 1GHDT13W3V2
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: I HAD BEEN EXPERIENCING EXCESSIVE VIBRATION ON THE FRONT END OF MY 1997 OLD'S BRAVADA. I TOOK IT IN AND WAS TOLD IT REQUIRED BALL JOINTS BUT APPARENTLY THERE IS A NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID # OF 01I018000 IN REFERENCE TO IT AND THAT GM HAD DECIDED TO CONDUCT A CUSTOMER SATISFACTION CAMPAIGN TO REPLACE THEM FOR A PEIOD OF 8YR'S OR 100,000 MILES WHICHEVER COMES FIRST FROM THE DATE THE VEHICLE WAS PLACED IN SERVICE. WELL, I DID THAT AND WAS TOLD AFTER A TOTAL RUN AROUND AS WELL AS THE SERVICE GARAGE GOING THRU THE RUN AROUND AS WELL CALLING ON IT, THAT IT DOES NOT AFFECT MY 97' OLD'S BRAVADA. SO HERE I AM WITH A TRUCK THAT IS UNDER THE STATED TIME OF REPAIR BY GM WITH FRONT END WORK THAT WILL COST ME OVER $800.00 TO FIX AND GM DOES NOT CARE. SO WHAT WAS THE PURPOSE OF HAVING A CAMPAIGN ON THE VEHICLE IF GM HAD NOT INTENTION OF DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT? THE SERVICE GUY AT THE GARAGE EVEN ASKED THE REP. FROM GM, "SO AM I SUPPOSED TO LET THE GUY DRIVE OFF WITH THE BAD BALLJOINTS SO HIS WHEELS FALL OFF AND POSSIBLY CREATING AN ACCIDENT?" SHE DID NOT RESPOND AND SAID THERE IS NOTHING THEY WILL DO. SO IN THE MEANTIME I HAVE A TRUCK THAT I CAN NOT DRIVE MUCH FOR FEAR OF THE WHEELS FALLING OFF, UNLESS I PAY FOR THE WORK TO DO SO. SO WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THE COMPAINT WHEN GM INTENDED ON DOING NOTHING ABOUT IT? I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEM AFTER PROBLEM SINCE I BOUGHT THIS CAR FROM THE DEALER A COUPLE OF MONTHS BACK AND WILL NEVER BUY A GM PRODUCT AS LONG AS I LIVE AGAIN. I SHOULD HAVE JUST STAYED WITH MY TOYOTA.*AK

1997 Oldsmobile Bravada recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 1997 Oldsmobile Bravada.

2003-03-31
  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: SEAT BELTS:FRONT:BUCKLE ASSEMBLY
  • Summary: CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES WERE BUILT WITH A DRIVER'S SEAT BELT BUCKLE ASSEMBLY THAT CONTAINS AN ENERGY-ABSORBING LOOP. SUSTAINED LOADS OF SUFFICIENT MAGNITUDE AND DURATION ON THE BELT IN SEVERE CRASHES COULD FULLY DEPLOY THE BUCKLE ENERGY-ABSORBING LOOP, INTRODUCING A TOTAL OF 10 ADDITIONAL INCHES OF WEBBING INTO THE SEAT BELT SYSTEM. THE FREE FALLING LATCH PLATE USED IN THIS SYSTEM MAY ALLOW WEBBING TO DYNAMICALLY DISTRIBUTE BETWEEN THE LAP AND SHOULDER BELT AS THE DRIVER'S POSITION CHANGES DURING A MULTIPLE ROLLOVER EVENT.
  • Consequence: IF THE ENERGY-ABSORBING LOOP FULLY DEPLOYS IN A SEVERE MULTIPLE ROLLOVER CRASH, IT IS POSSIBLE THAT A BELTED DRIVER MAY EXPERIENCE PARTIAL OR EVEN COMPLETE EJECTION FROM THE VEHICLE.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE ENERGY-ABSORBING SEAT BELT ASSEMBLIES WITH ONE THAT DOES NOT HAVE THE ENERGY-ABSORBING LOOP. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON AUGUST 8, 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-222-1020, GMC AT 1-800-462-8782, OR OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-442-6537.
2001-12-04
  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:UPPER BALL JOINT
  • Summary: THIS IS NOT A SAFETY RECALL IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE SAFETY ACT. HOWEVER, IT IS DEEMED A SAFETY IMPROVEMENT CAMPAIGN BY THE AGENCY. VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: 1996-1997 4-WHEEL DRIVE CHEVROLET BLAZER, GMC JIMMY, AND OLDSMOBILE BRAVADA SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES. SOME OWNERS HAVE HAD TO PAY FOR REPLACEMENT OF THE UPPER BALL JOINTS THAT HAVE SEPARATED. GM IS PROVIDING A SPECIAL POLICY TO THESE OWNERS TO COVER UPPER BALL JOINT REPLACEMENT IF THE CUSTOMER FOLLOWED THE RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE FOR THE CHASSIS LUBRICATION AND THE VEHICLE STILL REQUIRED THE REPLACEMENT OF THE UPPER BALL JOINTS DUE TO SEPARATION.

We've had some trouble with our vehicle since we bought it, unfortunately. It's needed a fair amount of servicing, which can be quite expensive. Despite our efforts, it still doesn't seem to be running quite right, and we've had to replace a number of parts. There are a few issues that we haven't been able to resolve, like the airbag light that won't turn off and the speakers that sometimes stop working. We're hoping to find a solution soon, but it's been a bit frustrating. Overall, we've had some challenges with this car, but we're still hopeful that we can find a way to make it work.

I bought this truck used in 2000 and it's only been to the mechanic twice. Once for brakes and calipers, and the other for a sluggishness that was attributed to dirty fuel injectors (fixed with a $27 chemical that goes in the fuel tank). This car is our family's only one, and we absolutely love it. It has treated us great, and it feels like driving a luxury car. You should definitely consider getting one while you still can!

When we bought the car, unfortunately, the gas gauge didn't work. My wife found out the hard way on the second day of ownership when the car ran out of gas. Additionally, we had some other issues with the car such as the alternator going out, the front brake calipers freezing, and the front steering linkages needing to be replaced. The ball joints also went bad and then the transmission started to go. As a result, we decided to trade in the Bravada for a 2003 Toyota Highlander, which is a beautiful car. While we have a 2002 Mustang, we are looking forward to upgrading soon. We have decided to avoid American cars in the future, but we are excited to explore other options.

I purchased this car without proper knowledge, and unfortunately, the transmission failed within a year of purchase. Additionally, the heating system and several other mechanical components also malfunctioned. However, I am confident that I will not be purchasing another GM vehicle in the future.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Saturn Vue that I purchased from a private owner. I drove it all the way from Ohio to AZ without any issues, which was great! After my arrival, I replaced the radiator and water pump, as well as the brake rotors and calipers before my next trip. The SmartTrak feature was really cool and helped me drive through the snow without any problems. I did notice a small rust spot around the gas tank refill, but it's just starting to bubble and I don't have any other issues with the vehicle. I'm planning on driving it for as long as possible, just like my previous GM vehicles. Currently, there are 84K miles on the Bravada. Thanks for reading!

Hi there! I'm happy to hear that the car runs great with no problems even after 50K miles. Just remember to take good care of it and enjoy the drive!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with the car I recently purchased. It had 52,000 miles on it, and the only issue I encountered was with the oil filter line, which cost around $70 to fix. Although it's a poor GM design, they have since changed it. The car runs great and is an absolute beast in the snow. In fact, during our 'snow runs,' I even embarrassed my roommate who owns a Jeep Cherokee! While the gas efficiency could be a little better, the car has a nice amount of room - much more than the Cherokee. It also looks great and feels good to drive. Thanks for listening!

I purchased my Bravada about 15 months ago and overall it has been a wonderful experience driving it. I never liked SUV's before, now I'm hooked. The I still like my cars, I believe I will always have a SUV to sit beside it. It's handling is pretty much natural and the style puts you right with the other big time wheelers at a very reasonable price and equal style, always meeting the look of many $40,000 - $50,000 SUV you see riding around. I brought mine for $6,000 and it sat with the most expensive SUV's in the city. It raved with compliments from all who seen and expeienced it.

I love this car! It's been with me for six years now and it hasn't given me any trouble. I've only had to replace the ball joints and add freon to the air conditioner, but that's about it. I love driving it around town and taking it to my lake cabin. It's a great hauler and I plan on keeping it until it drops.

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you bought your car in 1998 with only 16K miles. Unfortunately, the transmission went out at 40K, but luckily, GM put a new one in for free after some complaining (kudos GM!). Since then, you've replaced the brake pads, belt tensioner, and water pump, but overall, it hasn't been too bad. You mentioned that you like the way it drives and that it's great in the snow. While you wouldn't buy another one due to reliability concerns, you're enjoying yours now and plan on driving it until it dies. Everything is working great now...knock on wood!
