1999 Oldsmobile Bravada problems
The Oldsmobile Bravada is a mid-size luxury SUV that was sold by Oldsmobile from 1991 to 2004. The only SUV ever marketed by Oldsmobile, the Bravada was the first light truck offered by General Motors outside of the Chevrolet and GMC divisions since 1924. The flagship of the GM midsize SUV line, the Bravada served as the most luxurious GM SUV prior to the introduction of the GMC Yukon Denali and Cadillac Escalade.
The first two generations of the Bravada were derived from the Chevrolet (S-10) Blazer and GMC Jimmy, offered solely as a five-door wagon. The third generation of the model line adopted a dedicated SUV platform, shared with the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and GMC Envoy. Coinciding with the 2004 retirement of the Oldsmobile brand, GM rebranded the Bravada from 2005 to 2009 as the Buick Rainier and the Saab 9-7X (becoming the first SUV for both brands).
First generation (1991–1994)
For 1991, Oldsmobile introduced the Bravada as its first-ever sport-utility vehicle. Launched alongside the newly introduced four-door version of the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer, the Bravada was the first Oldsmobile truck-based vehicle since the 1920s. In contrast to its divisional counterparts, the Bravada was sold only as a four-door SUV; no two-door body nor any pickup truck version was produced. The first generation was sold exclusively in the United States.
The first luxury SUV produced by GM, the Bravada was designed with its a distinctive exterior separate from its divisional counterparts. In contrast to the larger Jeep Grand Wagoneer (discontinued after 1991), the Bravada was not fitted with wagon-style woodgrain exterior trim; instead, the body adopted a nearly monochromatic appearance with lower body cladding (similar to the GMC Typhoon). A body-color headlight surround was styled with a traditional Oldsmobile split grille; aluminum wheels were standard equipment. Other standard features included standard remote keyless entry, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and the use of SmartTrak all-wheel drive.
As with its Chevrolet/GMC counterpart, the Bravada was fitted with a standard 4.3L V6; for 1992, its output was increased from 160 hp to 200 hp. In contrast to the part-time four-wheel drive system of the Blazer/Jimmy, the Bravada was fitted with SmartTrak full-time all-wheel drive. Shared with the GMC Typhoon and the AWD Astro/Safari vans, SmartTrak used a BorgWarner 4472 transfer case; though forgoing low-range gearing, the system offered a 65%/35% rear/front torque split, shifting it when the system detected slippage.
During its production, the first-generation Bravada underwent minor detail changes. For 1992, the instrument panel was revised to further distinguish itself from the Blazer/Jimmy. For 1993, an overhead console was added (including a compass, temperature, and reading lights). As an option, a Gold package featured gold-colored badging and wheels.

- VIN: 1GHDT13W1X2
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: AS I WAS ON THE WAY HOME FROM WORK DRIVING ON A CITY STREET AND I CAME TO A STOP I DOWNED MY WINDOWS. I REALIZED A BURNING SMELL. A LITTLE LATER, AS I PULLED UP TO MY HOUSE THE SMELL SEEMED TO HAD GOTTEN WORSE AND I GOT OUT OF THE CAR AND UPPED MY HOOD. THERE HAD SEEM TO BE OIL LEAKAGE BUT I'M NOT SURE IT WAS LATE. I'M NOT A MECHANIC BUT I KIND OF KNOW A BIT. FROM MY INSPECTION I MAY HAVE OIL LEAKING ON A HOT EXHAUST MANIFOLD. THE BURNING SMELL IS NOT THE STRONGEST BUT ITS SENSIBLE. I AM VERY SCARED TO DRIVE MY VEHICLE AND I HOPE FOR IT NOT TO CATCH FIRE. I SERVICE MY VEHICLE FOR REGULAR OIL CHANGES AND THINGS AND I DON'T UNDERSTAND THE ISSUE. MAY IT BE MY VALVE COVER GASKET? I'M SCARED FOR MY LIFE TO DRIVE MY NIECES TO SCHOOL NOW. UNFORTUNATELY, THEY HAVE BEEN CATCHING THE CARTA BUS. IT HURTS MY HEART I HAVE THIS PROBLEM WITH SUCH A RELIABLE GM CAR. PLEASE HELP. I'M TERRIFIED IT MAY EVEN CATCH FIRE IN THE DRIVEWAY!

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-04-17
- VIN: 1GHDT13W9X2
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: ON OR ABOUT APRIL 17TH, AS I WAS TURNING OF THE MAIN ROAD ONTO MY CUL-DE-SAC, I TAPPED THE BRAKES TO SLOW AND THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED THE SHIFTER INTO LOW TO SLOW DOWN AND THEN TO NEUTRAL AS I CAME TO MY DRIVEWAY. TURNED INTO THE DRIVEWAY AND APPLIED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO COME TO A STOP. UPON EXAMINING THE VEHICLE, I DETERMINED THAT THE BRAKE LINE FOR THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR CALIPER HAD RUSTED OUT AND WAS LEAKING PROFUSELY. THE TIMING WAS VERY FORTUNATE AS I WAS ON A MAIN ROAD BEFORE THE BRAKES WENT OUT AND IF I HAD THE NEED TO COME TO A RAPID STOP A FEW MOMENTS EARLIER, I WOULD HAVE MORE THAN LIKELY BEEN INVOLVED IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. I KNOW THIS IS AN OLDER VEHICLE, BUT I SAW A NOTICE THAT THIS SAME ISSUE IS OCCURRING WITH OTHER GM VEHICLES OF THIS AGE AND WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW THAT I EXPERIENCED THIS AS WELL. THE CAR HAS BEEN VERY WELL MAINTAINED AND IS A VERY LOW MILEAGE CAR WHICH SHOULD NOT BE SUFFERING FROM BRAKE LINES WHICH RUST THROUGH FROM THE INSIDE OUT. IF YOU DO REQUIRE A RECALL OF THE VEHICLES FOR THIS PURPOSE, PLEASE DON'T LEAVE OLDSMOBILES OUT JUST BECAUSE THE BRAND HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED. THANK YOU *TR

I HAVE CALLED AROUND AND THEY ARE TELLING ME BECAUSE OF MY VIN NUMBER THEY CANT DO ANYTHING, BUT IT IS THE SAME YEAR MODEL AND I AM HAVING THE SAME ISSUES. THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT WONT GO OFF, IT WONT SHIFT INTO OVERDRIVE, IT DOESN'T SHIFT RIGHT, IT FEELS LIKE IT SHIFTS INTO NEUTRAL ON ITS ON. SOMETIMES IT FEELS LIKE IT DOESN'T REGISTER IT BEING IN DRIVE WHEN I GO TO TAKE OFF, SEEMS LIKE IT HAS A ROUGH IDLE, AND THE CRUISE CONTROL DOES NOT WORK ANYMORE. I WOULD LIKE SOMETHING TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS BECAUSE I NEED MY VEHICLE FIXED. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2006-12-19
- VIN: 1GHDT13W6X2
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: TRANSMISSION REACTION SUN SHELL FAILURE OCCURRED WHEN ENTERING HIGHWAY AT LEGAL SPEED. AVOIDED ACCIDENT, BUT CONDITION IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND SOMEWHAT COMMON TO ALL GM 4L60E TRANSMISSIONS. DEALER DIAGNOSED FAILURE AND STATED THAT THIS WAS A COMMON FAILURE IN THIS TRANSMISSION DUE TO A DEFECTIVE DESIGN OF THE REACTION SUN SHELL. PART IS IMPROPERLY WELDED/HEAT-TREATED. GM HAS REDESIGNED THE PART AND OFFERS GOODWILL REPAIRS AT THEIR DISCRETION. GM DECIDED THAT MY DEALER-MAINTAINED VEHICLE WAS NOT WORTHY OF A GOODWILL REPAIR?, ALTHOUGH THE SERVICE MANAGER RECOMMENDED TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT DUE TO THE PRISTINE CONDITION OF MY VEHICLE. COST $2152 TO REPAIR, BUT HOW MANY ACCIDENTS OR DEATHS HAS THIS EVENT CAUSED OVER THE LAST TEN YEARS? I WOULD BELIEVE AT LEAST ONE AND GM HAS ESCAPED THE RECALL THIS PART FAILURE DESERVES. CAR HAS BEEN MAINTAINED BY DEALER IN ACCORDANCE WITH REQUIRED INTERVALS. TRANSMISSION FLUSH IS NOT RECOMMENDED UNTIL 100,000 MILES, BUT THIS VEHICLE HAS HAD FLUID FLUSHES; BY THE DEALER, @ 35K AND 78K. FAILURE OCCURRED 4 MONTHS AFTER SERVICE @ 82K.*JB

- Summary: ON 11 APR 2005, I PURCHASED A 1999 OLDSMOBILE BRAVADA FROM A NH DEALER, WITH APPROX. 74000 MILES ON IT. WITHIN ONE WEEK, THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED FOR A BAD WATER PUMP, AND DRIVER'S WINDOW SWITCH. DURING THE WEEK OF 21 APRIL, I HAD THE ALTERNATOR REPLACED. THIS VEHICLE HAD A NH STATE INSPECTION STICKER, BUT IT HAS YET TO PASS A MA STATE INSPECTION. THE AIR INJECTION PUMP THAT ASSISTS IN THE AIR/FUEL MIX HAS BEEN UPDATED BY GM, BUT THEIR "UPDATE" ALLOWS THEM TO CALL IT SOMETHING OTHER THAN A RECALL, SO, IT WOULD COST ME AN ADDITIONAL $400-500. FOR THIS "UPDATE". IN SEP OF 2005, I NOTICED A GRADUALLY GROWING NOISE FROM THE FRONT END. I WAS TOLD THE ENTIRE FRONT END WAS WIPED OUT. THE SAFETY ISSUES ALONE WERE EXHAUSTIVE. THE FOLLOWING HAD TO BE REPLACED, AND WERE DONE, TO THE COST OF $1700.: PITMAN ARM / IDLER ARM / UPPER, LOWER BALL JOINTS / CV JOINTS,AXLES,BOOTS/ ENTIRE FRONT HUB ASSEMBLIES / FRONT BRAKES (ROTORS,PADS,CALIPERS) / 4 TIRES CURRENTLY, THE DRIVER'S FRONT DOOR IS SAGGING DUE TO POOR DOOR PINS AND BUSHINGS. MAACO WANTS $1200. TO REPLACE THE HINGES, PINS, AND BUSHINGS, AND REPAIR/REPLACE THE STRIKER PLATE AND SURROUNDING AREA. THE DIRECTIONAL SIGNAL SOUNDS CONSTANTLY EVEN WITHOUT USING THE SIGNAL, AND GOES AWAY WHEN YOU STEP ON THE BRAKE (!?) THE KEY FREQUENTLY GETS STUCK IN THE IGNITION AND WON'T COME OUT. LAST MONTH YET ANOTHER ALTERNATOR HAD TO GO IN AS THE OTHER FAILED. I HAD THIS BACK IN THE SHOP YESTERDAY 01FEB06 FOR A BANGING SOUND COMING FROM THE FRONT END, AND THE TECHNICIAN ADVISED ME THAT HE CALLED GM. THEY CONFIRMED THERE IS A DEFECTIVE FRONT TORSION BAR IN THESE BLAZER-TYPE VEHICLES. THE TECHNICIAN STATED IT WOULD COST ME AROUND $250. IT NEVER ENDS. I AM TRULY EXHAUSTED BOTH MENTALLY AND FINANCIALLY WITH THIS CAR. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE YOU CAN. THE DEALER WON'T TAKE IT BACK, WILL NOT ASSIST, AND GM DOES NOT WANT ANYTHING TO DO WITH ME. THEY WON'T EVEN TAKE MY CALL. I TRULY FEAR FOR MY AND MY FAMILY'S SAFETY. *JB

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to let you know that I purchased my '99 Bravada a little over four years ago and it's been such a great investment. In that time, I've only had to replace the brakes and a wheel bearing. I've made sure to keep up with regular maintenance, both inside and out, which has kept the vehicle looking great! The ride is wonderful and all of the bells and whistles make it a favorite for trips. Thanks for taking the time to read this!
-
I can tell you really love your '93 truck! It sounds like you made a great choice in trading it in for a newer one. The features you mentioned, like the leather seats, console shift, and SmartTrack system, all sound fantastic. And it's great to hear that you haven't had any issues with it yet at 57,000 miles. The sound system and wood trim are just icing on the cake. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

My 99 Baravada has been a reliable vehicle since new. We have kept up with maintenance, including brake replacements twice due to living in the mountains and using the brakes frequently. The engine has over 115,000 miles and still delivers 23+mpg on flat roads and 17-19 in the mountains. It's important to keep the air filter changed and avoid using heavy oil. I recommend switching to autotrak11 transfer case lube, which is blue and can help with tight turns (although I never experienced any issues).

Owned for four years and have only replaced a battery (under warranty). Routine service at the Vacaville CA dealership has been excellent and at nominal cost. Olds has really shown that it values its customers. The Bravada looks as good as when it came off the showroom and is mechanically sound. It performs well in all weather, including snow, and the ride is very good for a truck, as well as being quiet. It tows well, up to about 4500 lbs. I would highly recommend it.

Congratulations on your new purchase! I just read about your 1999 Bravada and it sounds like a great vehicle for your needs. It's impressive that even with 103,000 miles on it, you were able to get it at a wholesale price. Although you had to replace the wheel bearing, it's great to hear that it's now running perfectly. It's understandable that you were concerned about the car's condition, but it seems like you made a wise choice. The Bravada's features, such as the heated seats and Bose stereo, are definitely a plus. I hope you enjoy using it for your weekend hauls and camping trips!

I also had trouble with the AWD chatter, but luckily the dealer replaced the fluid for free (KMX). Although the brakes and rotors wore prematurely and the shocks are inadequate, the interior is very comfortable. It tows my boat nicely. I hope to see improvements in the quality of the Big Three's vehicles. For my next SUV, I plan to go with a QX4...I've learned my lesson!

The Bravada is not a suitable vehicle for rural Illinois roads. Despite my efforts to improve its performance by replacing the shocks, bushings, ball joints, and tires, it remained bone-jarringly stiff and dangerous on bumpy, crowned highways. Even on smooth, level highways, it had a tendency to track funny and hunt from side to side. After three months of white knuckle driving, I decided to sell it. A full size 4x4 would be a better option for towing and road handling, while still getting the same MPG.

Overall, I find my Bravada to be comfortable. However, I have faced some maintenance issues. The steering has a known shudder problem, which can be fixed by draining and refilling the transfer case for $200.00. Additionally, the brakes wear out prematurely, and I have had to replace all of the rotors twice, as well as the wheel bearings twice. I have also had to replace the climate control computer for $400.00 and the fuel pump for $700.00. It is worth noting that my Bravada has over 130,000 miles. While some of these issues are due to wear and tear, I would say that the Bravada has above-average maintenance costs.

I experienced several issues with the dealership from the beginning of my purchase. Despite the fact that I bought the car with only 43,000 miles, the ignition and transmission failed, and I received no assistance from anyone. Even when the transmission failed again just 4,000 miles after the original warranty expired, neither Olds nor the dealer offered any help, and I had to pay over $4,000 for the repairs. Additionally, the brakes and rotors were defective, causing a shimmy and shake when turning and taking off.

Hi there! I've been driving my Bravada for about two years now since I bought it used. It's been a great car and I love it, but unfortunately, my service engine light has come on and the car shops are saying that my transmission is going out. I'm a bit worried about the cost to replace the transmission as it's quite high compared to the value of the car. On top of that, it's been leaking oil like crazy and I have to add a quart or two in between oil changes just to keep the oil level normal. The cup holders are also a bit of a hassle as my cups always stick to the rubber and are hard to get out. They're also in a really bad place when you want to put your car in park. Oh, and for some reason, my 4WD doesn't work. Any advice on what I should do next? Thanks!
