1996 Oldsmobile Bravada problems
The Oldsmobile Bravada is a mid-size luxury SUV that was sold by Oldsmobile from 1991 to 2004. The only SUV ever marketed by Oldsmobile, the Bravada was the first light truck offered by General Motors outside of the Chevrolet and GMC divisions since 1924. The flagship of the GM midsize SUV line, the Bravada served as the most luxurious GM SUV prior to the introduction of the GMC Yukon Denali and Cadillac Escalade.
The first two generations of the Bravada were derived from the Chevrolet (S-10) Blazer and GMC Jimmy, offered solely as a five-door wagon. The third generation of the model line adopted a dedicated SUV platform, shared with the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and GMC Envoy. Coinciding with the 2004 retirement of the Oldsmobile brand, GM rebranded the Bravada from 2005 to 2009 as the Buick Rainier and the Saab 9-7X (becoming the first SUV for both brands).
First generation (1991–1994)
For 1991, Oldsmobile introduced the Bravada as its first-ever sport-utility vehicle. Launched alongside the newly introduced four-door version of the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer, the Bravada was the first Oldsmobile truck-based vehicle since the 1920s. In contrast to its divisional counterparts, the Bravada was sold only as a four-door SUV; no two-door body nor any pickup truck version was produced. The first generation was sold exclusively in the United States.
The first luxury SUV produced by GM, the Bravada was designed with its a distinctive exterior separate from its divisional counterparts. In contrast to the larger Jeep Grand Wagoneer (discontinued after 1991), the Bravada was not fitted with wagon-style woodgrain exterior trim; instead, the body adopted a nearly monochromatic appearance with lower body cladding (similar to the GMC Typhoon). A body-color headlight surround was styled with a traditional Oldsmobile split grille; aluminum wheels were standard equipment. Other standard features included standard remote keyless entry, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and the use of SmartTrak all-wheel drive.
As with its Chevrolet/GMC counterpart, the Bravada was fitted with a standard 4.3L V6; for 1992, its output was increased from 160 hp to 200 hp. In contrast to the part-time four-wheel drive system of the Blazer/Jimmy, the Bravada was fitted with SmartTrak full-time all-wheel drive. Shared with the GMC Typhoon and the AWD Astro/Safari vans, SmartTrak used a BorgWarner 4472 transfer case; though forgoing low-range gearing, the system offered a 65%/35% rear/front torque split, shifting it when the system detected slippage.
During its production, the first-generation Bravada underwent minor detail changes. For 1992, the instrument panel was revised to further distinguish itself from the Blazer/Jimmy. For 1993, an overhead console was added (including a compass, temperature, and reading lights). As an option, a Gold package featured gold-colored badging and wheels.

Common 1996 Oldsmobile Bravada problems
The Oldsmobile Bravada, produced from 1991 to 2001, was a popular midsize SUV known for its comfort and versatility. However, like any vehicle, it had its share of common problems, particularly in its second generation (1996-2001). Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:
- Engine Issues: Many second-generation Oldsmobile Bravada owners reported engine-related problems, such as misfiring or hesitation during acceleration. This issue was typically caused by faulty ignition coils, spark plug wires, or spark plugs and could be resolved by replacing the affected components. Another common engine problem was excessive oil consumption, which could lead to engine damage or failure. This issue was typically caused by worn piston rings or valve seals and could be addressed by replacing the affected components or rebuilding the engine.
- Transmission Issues: Some owners reported problems with the transmission slipping or failing to shift properly. This issue was usually caused by a worn-out transmission solenoid or a damaged torque converter. The recommended solution was to replace the affected component or rebuild the transmission.
- Electrical System Issues: Electrical system problems, such as malfunctioning power windows, door locks, and interior lights, were also common in the second-generation Bravada. These issues were typically caused by faulty wiring or electrical shorts and could be resolved by repairing or replacing the affected components.
- HVAC System Issues: Some owners reported problems with the heater and air conditioner, which were typically caused by a faulty blower motor or a damaged heater core. The recommended solution was to replace the affected component or repair the damaged parts.
- Brake System Issues: Brake system problems, such as brake pads and rotor wear, brake fluid leaks, and ABS system malfunctions, were also common in the Oldsmobile Bravada. These issues could be addressed by replacing the affected components or repairing the damaged parts.
- Exhaust System Issues: The exhaust system could experience leaks and rust, as well as catalytic converter failure and O2 sensor malfunctions. These issues could be resolved by replacing the affected components or repairing the damaged parts.
- Body and Interior Issues: Body and interior issues, such as rust and corrosion, power window and lock problems, and dashboard and trim cracking and fading, were also common in the Oldsmobile Bravada. These issues could be addressed by repairing or replacing the affected components.
In general, while the Oldsmobile Bravada could experience a range of problems, it could still be a reliable vehicle with proper maintenance and care. It is essential to keep up with routine maintenance and address any issues promptly to avoid more significant problems down the line. As with any vehicle, regular inspections and repairs can help extend its life and improve its overall reliability.

THEY JUST GOT LUCKY WHEN THEY PUT THE WIRING HARNESS TOGETHER AND IT WORKED WHEN THEY GAVE IT BACK TO ME. WHEN I DROVE IT HOME, IT FAILED AGAIN. - I WANT MY $700+ BILL FOR THEIR REPAIR REFUNDED. I ALSO WANT GM TO ADDRESS A POOR DESIGN OF A FUEL PUMP PLACEMENT (THAT I BELIEVE THEY STILL USE) THAT REQUIRES $400 OF LABOR TO DROP THE FUEL TANK TO ACCESS. This is a nice car, but once the odometer hits 60,000 miles, it may require more frequent maintenance. It's worth keeping in mind that this tends to happen just after the warranty expires.
-
We purchased our Olds Bravada brand new in 1996 with the gold package, towing package, and CD player - three of the few options that did not come standard. Over the years, we put 257,000 miles on it, and both of our children used it as their high school vehicle. We even drove it back and forth from WI to OH 40 or more times, including through a blizzard of up to 20 inches in Indiana while my wife was 7 months pregnant with our first child, which ended up shutting down interstates. We had the normal maintenance costs, such as brakes and suspension, but they were a fraction of the monthly payment of a new vehicle, and we never had any major repairs. Recently, we had some trouble with the engine cutting out, which was a challenge to diagnose, but eventually, our repair shop figured it out. To this day, the only rust was on the front tow hooks, the rear tow bar which we replaced, and a very small spot on the corner of the rear bumper. For us, we could not have asked for more from a vehicle, and the fact that it is still on the road is a testament to what this vehicle deserves.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my Bravada. I bought it used for $8,000 with 42,000 miles on it and it's been great so far. The only issue I had was with the spark plug wires, but that was an easy fix. It handles the snow here in PA with ease and there's plenty of cargo room in the back. The seats are also very comfortable, so no real complaints from me!
