1995 Oldsmobile Achieva problems
The Oldsmobile Achieva is a front-wheel drive compact sedan and coupe that was introduced by Oldsmobile for the 1992 model year. The Achieva was based on the GM N-body platform, which it also shared with its siblings the Pontiac Grand Am and Buick Skylark. The Achieva replaced the GM N-body Cutlass Calais after its final 1991 model year, and ended production after the 1998 model year.
Overview
The Achieva is a compact car produced by the General Motors' Oldsmobile division from 1991 until 1998 and was available as a sedan or coupe. It was offered in four different trim levels during its production run: S, SC, SL, and SCX. Available engines included different versions of the Oldsmobile-developed 2.3 L Quad 4 engine: the base single-cam L40 "Quad OHC", the DOHC LD2, the high-output LG0, and the special "W41" variant of the LG0 Quad 4 used in the SCX model. All were replaced for 1996 by a revised 2.4 L version. A pair of V6 engines were also offered including the Buick-sourced 90° 3.3 L "3300" V6, which was later replaced by Chevrolet's 60° 3.1 L "3100" V6. While a 5-speed manual transaxle was initially offered as the standard base transmission, most Achieva models were sold with 3-speed or 4-speed automatic transaxles. 1998 was the final model year for the Achieva, after which it was replaced in the Oldsmobile lineup by the Alero for the 1999 model year.
Initial production
The Achieva was first seen as a concept car at the 1991 Chicago Auto Show, positioned to replace Oldsmobile's compact Calais models. The Calais and Achieva share the same front wheel drive N-body architecture including identical wheelbase. The Achieva started regular production for the 1992 model year. It was offered in four different trim levels: S and SL, available on both coupes and sedans, and the sporty SC and SCX coupes. The base S offered a 120 hp (89 kW) 2.3 L "Quad OHC" 4-cylinder, while the SL had the DOHC 160 horsepower (120 kW) Quad 4 engine standard that was optional on the S model. A 160 hp (120 kW) 3.3 L V6 engine was optional for the SL. The SC coupe had a standard 180 hp (130 kW) high-output Quad 4 with 5-speed manual transmission or a 3 speed automatic, with the 3.3 L V6 being an option.

Common 1995 Oldsmobile Achieva problems
The 1995 Oldsmobile Achieva has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. Here are some of the issues that have been frequently mentioned:
- Door Panels Falling Off: Many owners have reported that the door panels of their 1995 Oldsmobile Achieva are falling off. This can be a significant safety issue, as the door panels are responsible for holding the door handles and window controls, and their loss can make it difficult to operate the car safely.
- Transmission Slips and Stalls: Transmission problems are a common issue with the 1995 Oldsmobile Achieva. Many owners have reported that their car's transmission slips and stalls, which can be a significant safety issue. This problem can be caused by a variety of factors, including low transmission fluid levels or a faulty transmission control module.
- Cooling Fan Motor Failure: The cooling fan motor is responsible for cooling the engine, and when it fails, the engine can overheat. This can be a serious problem, as an overheated engine can cause significant damage to the car.
- Water Pump Failure: The water pump is responsible for circulating coolant through the engine, and when it fails, the engine can overheat. This can be a serious problem, as an overheated engine can cause significant damage to the car.
- Coil Failure: The coil is responsible for generating the spark that ignites the fuel in the engine, and when it fails, the engine can misfire or fail to start. This can be a significant safety issue, as a misfiring engine can be difficult to control and can cause the car to stall.
- Radiator Failure: The radiator is responsible for cooling the engine, and when it fails, the engine can overheat. This can be a serious problem, as an overheated engine can cause significant damage to the car.
- Heater Core Failure: The heater core is responsible for providing heat to the car's cabin, and when it fails, the car's cabin can become cold. This can be a significant comfort issue, as a cold cabin can make it uncomfortable to drive the car.
- Check Oil Light Stays On: The check oil light is responsible for indicating when the engine's oil level is low, and when it stays on, it can indicate a serious problem with the engine. This can be a significant safety issue, as a low oil level can cause the engine to seize up and fail.
These are just some of the common problems reported by owners of the 1995 Oldsmobile Achieva. If you own one of these cars, it's important to keep up with regular maintenance and to address any issues as soon as they arise to avoid more significant problems down the line.
What happened to the Oldsmobile Achieva?
While a 5-speed manual transaxle was initially offered as the standard base transmission, most Achieva models were sold with 3-speed or 4-speed automatic transaxles. 1998 was the final model year for the Achieva, after which it was replaced in the Oldsmobile lineup by the Alero for the 1999 model year.
What caused Oldsmobile failure?
Oldsmobile, one of the oldest American car brands, faced challenges that ultimately led to its downfall. Similar to Plymouth and Pontiac, Oldsmobile suffered from a lack of brand identity and differentiation (as you might see, there is an area-curing mistake in every example so far).
Why did GM get rid of Oldsmobile?
The Aurora caused only a minor stir, however, and by 2000 GM announced plans to phase out the Oldsmobile brand due to dwindling sales. On April 29, 2004, after 106 years, the last Olds rolled off the assembly line.

- Summary: 1995 OLDSMOBILE AURORA, GM'S REAL WINNER HERE!!! WHERE DO I START? WE HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH OVER HEATING PROBLEMS, AND HAVE CHANGED WATER PUMPS, RADIATOR, RADIATOR FLUSHES, THERMOSTATS, A HANDFUL OF ALTERNATORS, TWICE THE A/C SEIZED, MAJOR VIBRATION AT HIGH SPEEDS AND STOPPING, CAUSED? OVER HEATED DISK BRAKES! ITS A REALLY NICE CAR; WE LOVE IT, BUT JUST CAN'T SEE THE END TO THIS FORESEEING WASTE OF CASH. OUR FAMILY MEMBERS HAVE ALL POUND THIS CAR AROUND, CAN'T BEAR GIVING IT UP, ESPECIALLY AFTER INVESTING SO MUCH. SHIFTING IN REVERSE CAN HAVE YOU SLAPPING IT IN DRIVE SEEING THE CHIROPRACTOR FROM THE SUDDEN JOLT. PROBLEMS WITH STEERING WHEEL, IS LOOSE AS A GOOSE, LEAKING FLUIDS FROM UNKNOWN PLACES THAT SEEM TO DISAPPEAR WHEN GETTING THEM SERVICED? ENGINE MOUNTS IN NEED OF A 2ND REPLACEMENT OVERHEATING IS AN ERRATIC PROBLEM, ALONG WITH THE IRREGULAR IDLES. THESE ISSUES ARE ALL STEMMED FROM THE REALLY BAD DESIGN PLANS, GIVING US THESE PROBLEMS THAT NEVER REALLY GET FIXED. THE CAUSE, MAJOR INTERNAL OVERHEATING! PROMOTING MASSIVE MELT DOWN ON OUR PRECIOUS BABY NORTHSTAR MAKES ONE EXPENSIVE ALUMINUM PAPER WEIGHT. NO MECHANIC SHOP WILL FIX OUR ENGINES, WHY? LIABILITY, THE BAD DESIGN HAS PROVEN THIS (IT DOES NOT WORK!). THE POOR DESIGN WAS EVIDENT TO GM WAY BEFORE THE FACTORY STARTED THROWING THEM TOGETHER. THEY JUST ADDED BANDAIDS ON THE MOST CRUCIAL ASPECT THEY NEEDED FURTHER DEVELOPMENT; THESE LOW ATTRIBUTES HAVE LEFT US SHORT CHANGED HOLDING A BAG OF SAFETY AND FINANCIAL BURDENS. TAKE A LOOK AT THIS NHTSA ODI NUMBERS; 8010002,10003769,10028708,1005387, 10057594,10063987,10069013,10069679,10070352,10071397,10094331, 10094992,10101048,10120403,10121459. THIS IS JUST A FRACTION OF THE PROBLEMS, THAT??S WHY A MECHANIC WILL NOT TOUCH YOUR ENGINE, BUT WILL ONLY EXCHANGE FOR A BRAND NEW ONE COST OF AROUND $8,000.00, AND OLDSMOBILE, WELL AS YOU KNOW. BAILING OUT. THANKS GM FOR THE NICE KICK IN THE PANTS. *JB

I FOUND ORIGINAL GM RECALL NOTICE AND 9/14/04 INVOICE FROM SHOTTENKIRK. 10/11/05 CALLED THE GM#800-630-6537, SPOKE WITH MICHELLE GONZALES. GAVE HER THE INFORMATION FROM MY RECALL NOTICE AND THE SHOTTENKIRK INVOICE. SHE RESPONDED WITH - THIS AUTOMOBILE WAS NEVER UNDER ANY RECALL NOR DOES IT HAVE ANY "OPEN" RECALLS. SHE REPLIED THAT I MUST HAVE GOTTEN A HOLD OF SOMEONE ELSE'S RECALL NOTICE OR IN SOME OTHER MANNER ATTAINED SUCH A DOCUMENT. THE GM NOTICE HAD MY VIN#, SHOTTENKIRK HAD DONE THE INSPECTION. SHE STATED THAT SHE HAD CONTACTED BRENT AT SHOTTENKIRK, IF THEY HAD DONE THE INSPECTION IT WAS OUT OF COURTESY OR BY MISTAKE. I HAVE ALL ORIGINAL DOCUMENTATION FROM GM AND SHOTTENKIRK. WHY HAS THE GM REPRESENTATIVE INFORMED ME THAT THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT PART OF THIS CAMPAIGN AND INFERRED THAT I HAD SOMEHOW "MANUFACTURED" THE RECALL PAPERWORK. WHY DOES GM RECORDS INDICATE NO "OPEN" RECALLS? ARE RECALLS CLOSED AFTER AN INSPECTION IS FILED OR ONLY AFTER THE WORK IS COMPLETED? I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHO REIMBURSED SHOTTENKIRK FOR THE INSPECTION FEE, SINCE ACCORDING TO GM & SHOTTENKIRK THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT PART OF ANY RECALL. I CONTACTED THE NHTSA (MARTINA) AND VERIFIED THAT THIS VEHICLE IS INCLUDED IN CAMPAIGN#04V110000. I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE SURE THAT THE OLDSMOBILE DEALER HAS NOT FALSELY IDENTIFIED THIS AUTOMOBILE AS BEING REPAIRED UNDER THIS RECALL. AT THIS TIME I REQUEST THAT I BE REIMBURSED MY REPAIRS OF $195.93 AND GET MY CAR REPAIRED TO COMPLY WITH RECALL CAMPAIGN #04V110000 GM#04014B AT NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE. *JB

I bought my car with 59,000 miles on it, and now it has 127,000. It has only let me down once, when the water pump failed. This car can go anywhere I want, and it's a joy to drive. I had an alternator go out in Pittsburgh, which is about 100 miles away from where I live. I put in a new battery and drove all the way home without any issues.
-
This is a great mid-sized car! The gas mileage is fantastic and the air conditioner is awesome. It also has good pick-up and a pretty cool design. However, it's worth noting that parts can be expensive due to the four-quad engine design.
-
I bought my car in '96 with 14,000 miles on it and just hit 100,000 miles this month! Honestly, besides having to spend a couple of dollars here and there for broken plastic pieces of the interior and a new transmission three years ago, this car has treated me right! It is still running well and I've been very lucky!

Your Oldsmobile Achieva has been in the family for about 7 years, and you have been driving it for the past 5 months. Recently, with 140,000 miles on it, you faced some issues such as a cracked cylinder head, motor mount problems, and a need for a new water pump. To avoid high repair bills, you decided to replace the engine with a used quad four that had about 53,000 miles on it. Since then, the car has been running great with only a few minor issues. The I-4 engine provides adequate acceleration and the handling is okay. Being an Oldsmobile, it is a very comfortable car. Overall, it has been a pleasure to drive and own this car.
-
I've owned this car since it was new and it has been both reliable and efficient. I make sure to follow the manufacturer's specifications for maintenance, treating it as if it were a Japanese car. I plan to continue using this car for several years to come. While it may not be the most attractive vehicle and is relatively inexpensive, I'm not too concerned about it being stolen.

Hi there! I'm happy to share that my experience with this car has been surprisingly good. I decided to purchase it because of a large GM-card rebate and because I wasn't a fan of the plastic-clad Pontiac Grand AM (its platform sister). I'm pleased to say that my repair history has been very good - very little has gone wrong, other than what was expected. For example, the water pump failed at 95,000 miles - not a cheap repair, but after 95,000 miles, that's not too bad.
Quincy Feil 2024-11-04
I'm glad to hear that you haven't had any major mechanical problems with your car. It's great that you're able to get about 27 mpg mixed with the V6. It seems like you've had to replace a few parts, including the front brakes every 30,000 miles or so, the radiator, A/C compressor and related, alternator, and front struts. However, it's good to know that the rear brakes have been replaced very infrequently.
Kyleigh Quitzon 2024-09-26
Although I encountered some challenges with this car, I can confidently say that it was a great vehicle when it was running smoothly. It provided excellent traction in snowy and icy conditions and was very comfortable. However, after driving it for some time, I had to replace several parts such as the radiator, belt tensioner, struts, all brake parts, O2 sensor, turn signal switch, and more. Unfortunately, the transmission gave out at 140,000 miles, and it was not worth repairing. Despite these issues, I still have fond memories of this car.

I purchased my 1994 Olds Achieva in 2002 from my boss, who was the original owner. At the time of purchase, it had 120,000 miles on it, and now it has 166,000 miles. Although it has had some issues with the engine and interior, it has been great on gas. Unfortunately, I have experienced some problems with the car stalling every time I get off the freeway, and only three of the four cylinders are working. Additionally, the gas gauge is broken, and the rear brakes clunk every morning. There is also a major exhaust leak that can cause headaches for passengers. The driver's side window does not work, and it must be pulled up with two hands. The interior has seen better days, with several things falling off, such as the speaker, vents, ashtray, and more. Despite these issues, I appreciate the good gas mileage and the fact that it was an affordable purchase.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to let you know that I purchased the car from my father-in-law for my teenage son. It has an impressive 255,000 miles on the original drivetrain, and has been well taken care of mechanically. We've replaced the usual struts, shocks, brakes, etc., but otherwise it's a solid car.
