Common 2016 Toyota Tundra problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2016 Toyota Tundra, several common problems have been reported:
- Excessive Vibrations: Some owners have experienced excessive vibrations, typically within the first 10,000 miles. The main cause is improper alignment, which can be fixed for around $120. Additionally, transmission mounts may need to be changed, costing approximately $200.
- Trailer Brake Controller Issues: Owners have reported problems with the trailer brake controller around 25,000 miles. Both hydraulic and electric trailer brake functions may be affected. Reprogramming the controller usually resolves the issue, with a cost of around $150.
- Stereo System Restarting: At around 30,000 miles, some 2016 Tundra models have faced issues with the stereo system restarting. Software updates are available to enhance reliability, which can be installed by Toyota dealerships for about $50.
- Recalls: There are 6 recalls on the 2016 Tundra, including a serious one related to a steering gear leak that can lead to a loss of power steering assistance. Toyota will replace the power steering gear assembly for free on affected models. Other recalls cover airbags and other safety features.
- Fuel Pump Failure: The fuel pump is a critical component that, if faulty, can lead to poor performance, stalling, or jittering. While not extremely frequent, fuel pump failures have been reported across various model years of the Tundra.
- Tire Pressure Monitoring System Issues: Both older and newer generations of the Toyota Tundra have experienced problems with the tire pressure monitoring system. Recalibrating the system has helped some owners resolve issues with the Tire Pressure Monitoring System light.
- Seat Issues: Over time, seats in the Toyota Tundra may develop problems like scuffing, punctures, or deterioration. Owners of different model years have reported issues with seat frames, brackets, and parts burning through the seats.

- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: The contact owns a 2016 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle ran off the road during a thunderstorm, causing the driver's and passenger's side curtain air bags to deploy. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who informed the contact that the headliner needed to be replaced; however, the part to complete the repair was not available. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The failure mileage was approximately 99,000.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-06
- VIN: 5TFHW5F1XGX
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Seat heater stopped working. Turns out there is a burnt connector leading to part number 87501-0C020, which appears to be a seat heater amp. One pin of the connector is completely melted. STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-07
- VIN: 5TFUY5F1XGX
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: I was stopped at a turn light to merge left onto freeway and the truck steering went out when trying to turn, it led me into oncoming traffic that was just coming to a stop light, I was able to crank my wheel with all my strength to get to the side of the uphill freeway merge ramp. There were no warning signs. It was so scary and thank goodness I hadn't merged onto the freeway. The component that failed was the power steering assembly, rack and pinion with inner and outer tie rods. I don't believe the parts will be available for inspection since the truck was towed to repair shop. Overall, I was lucky to be alive. My safety was put at risk being unable to properly steer, if I had been going any faster, or even on the freeway there would be no way to control the vehicle. Initially, I was put into oncoming traffic that was coming to a stop. It put myself and everyone around me in danger. The problem has been confirmed by an independent repair shop that truck was towed to. They immediately saw the problem and took several days to fix. Even questioned what I was doing at the time of this event, because something like this just doesn't typically happen. It concerned them so much, that United Wheels and Tires suggested I reach out to Toyota. The vehicle has not been inspected by anyone but the dealer and the tow truck services. Insurance was notified of situation and services dispatched, since the truck was not drivable. There were NO warming lamps, messages or anything on truck. Truck is in perfect condition and drove only on roads (no off-roading or towing, etc.).

- VIN: 5TFBW5F16GX
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Gas tank no longer fills completely in a single squeeze. Each squeeze of the pump only fills up maybe a .25 gallon at a squeeze if I am lucky, but typically less. This results in a complete fill up taking close to a half hour. There are numerous posts on forums such as https://www.tundras.com/threads/gas-filling-problem.38449/, https://www.tundras.com/threads/gas-tank-roll-over-valve-stuck-causes-hard-fuelling-anyone-else.42535/, and many others regarding this issue, with no response from dealers other than sorry. This sounds like a pure manufacturing issue if so many people have issues with their tanks, in a similar fashion.

I have been a loyal Toyota customer since 1981 and this is my sixth consecutive Toyota truck. I am writing this review to share my experience with the integrated brake controller (IBC) in the 2016 Tundra. While towing my 5,000 lbs. loaded camper, I noticed that even when set on the highest gain setting, I did not feel any braking from the camper when I pressed on the brake pedal. I have been towing for the past 13 years and I know how to set up and test my equipment. I took my truck and camper in for service, but they said that the IBC was working correctly. However, I was concerned about my safety and the safety of others on the road. As a result, I decided to install an after-market brake controller to ensure that I can safely go camping. Thank you for taking the time to read my review.

After 18 years of driving nothing but Dodge, I finally broke ranks and bought a Platinum CrewMax. This is without a doubt the most luxurious thing I have ever owned…or been in. Seriously. This thing is on par with my wife’s Range Rover. Actually, with the air-conditioned seats (which the RR doesn’t have), it is, in my opinion, more luxurious. With the CM cab, it is like having a small apartment in the rear, and we find ourselves opting to take the Tundra on trips rather than the RR. If you are interested in the Tundra CrewMax, I would recommend shopping the used market from 2013 and under. Don't worry about getting a used truck, these things last forever (my parents both have 200K+ on the odometer). In 2014, for some stupid reason, Toyota did away with the slide and recline rear seats in the CrewMax, which negates the plethora of behind-the-seat storage in the back. From 2014 forward, all the rear seats do is fold from the floor up, which is slightly less than useless. Without going into detail, this truck has every option besides remote start. The interior is amazing, quiet, comfortable, well thought out, and just plain works. The parking assist sonar and camera are awesome. The Sat Nav/infotainment is very easy to set up, pair the phone (up to 4), and other Bluetooth players (up to 2). The ventilated seats are a Godsend in Texas. And the power…my God, you could jump-start the Earth with the pulling power this thing has. And to the people moaning over mileage, you bought a 5.7 Liter V8…what were you expecting? When not towing, this package rides like a Cadillac. It is so quiet and comfortable it is almost criminal for a pickup truck. Bottom line, some magazines say other trucks have passed the Tundra, but I think they are still catching up…big time. 5 Stars. All the way.

When considering a vehicle, the first question to ask yourself is, 'what do I want it to do?' I previously owned a 2008 Tundra and it was a great truck. It had power, comfort, reliability, and good looks. However, when my job changed and I needed to transport passengers more often, I sold it and got a Honda Pilot. While I loved the Pilot and still have it (now my wife's car), I found that I wasn't hauling passengers as often as I thought and was hauling/towing things more often than I planned. So, I went truck shopping and considered Chevrolet, GMC, Dodge, Ford, Nissan, and Toyota. Once I got over the initial shock of how much prices have risen, I realized that the price for comparably equipped trucks was essentially the same. That favored Toyota, as even the Chevy salesman conceded that the Tundra has the highest resale value. When all was said and done, Toyota made the best deal on the truck I wanted: a Blazing Blue Pearl Platinum edition CrewMax. After spending some time with it, I can say that I love the truck every bit as much as I expected. The ride is plush, the electronics are great (much improved from 2008), the complete back window raise/lower feature is cool, the leather is slick, the seats are heated AND cooled (my wife loved that one), and it is beautiful inside and out. The mileage is the same as my old Tundra and about the same as any big V8 in any brand, but it is more powerful and torquey than most. My only real gripe is the lack of interior storage, with no storage under or behind the rear seat. That's a serious faux pas on Toyota's part and needs attention. I have read some trailer brake complaints, but I haven't been able to test it with a trailer with brakes (I normally pull smaller trailers without brakes) so I can't comment on that. Despite the lack of storage being a single negative, the Tundra is still an easy 5 stars. I am VERY glad to be back in a Tundra. To sum up, I absolutely love this truck! It has everything I could want in terms of power, comfort, electronics, space, looks, towing ability, and resale value. The only downside is the limited back seat storage, which is a shame considering the size of the truck. However, after two years of ownership, I am still extremely happy with my purchase. The truck is as mechanically sound as the day I bought it, and the electronics are still working perfectly. While the navigation system is good, I have found that Google Maps or Waze are much more capable. It would be great if Toyota could catch up in this area. The truck pulls trailers like a dream, and I have had no issues with the electric braking system. The only thing that regularly annoys me is the lack of storage behind the rear seats. Despite this, the truck is still amazing and I can't recommend it enough! The gas mileage has improved slightly over time, but it's still not the most economical option out there. In the city, I get around 14-15 mpg, and on the highway, I can get up to 20 mpg, but it's usually around 17-19 mpg. If I'm traveling at higher speeds, it's around 15-16 mpg.Definitely big truck-ish mileage, but not terrible for a 5.7 engine that pulls like this does. Overall, I would buy it again. While I was also considering the Chevy Z71, I am glad I chose this truck. It is built like a real truck and does everything a truck should do. It has its ups and downs, but I didn't want to give up strength for comfort, and I didn't have to. I got a good balance of both in this nice truck. I can imagine reviewing it here for many more years. I am a satisfied customer, and my Toyota dealer has taken great care of me and my truck.

Awesome truck! I'm so glad to hear that you felt safe and comfortable in it. If you're not very tall, you might want to consider buying steps or running boards - I'm only 5'6

I've leased 3 Tundras before, but this time I decided to buy one. I am absolutely certain that it will take care of me for many years to come. These trucks are truly bulletproof.

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that I've noticed some issues with the IBC on my truck, and it seems like a lot of other people have had similar experiences. It's definitely something to be aware of, as it could potentially be a safety concern. Have you had any issues with it yourself?

I understand your frustration with the 2016 Tundra. It appears that some of the standard options that were available in previous years have been removed, such as the electric sliding rear window, rear door storage pockets, dual heating/cooling system, and storage areas in the upper console. Additionally, the center divider storage box in the floor console is no longer available. It can be disappointing when features you have come to appreciate are no longer included. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

You've got a great drive train, but the interior trim could use some improvement. There's a lot of plastic used throughout the cabin, which can be quite noisy, especially the trim around the touch screen. I'm not sure if I would purchase this truck again.
