1998 Oldsmobile Achieva problems
The Oldsmobile Achieva is a front-wheel drive compact sedan and coupe that was introduced by Oldsmobile for the 1992 model year. The Achieva was based on the GM N-body platform, which it also shared with its siblings the Pontiac Grand Am and Buick Skylark. The Achieva replaced the GM N-body Cutlass Calais after its final 1991 model year, and ended production after the 1998 model year.
Overview
The Achieva is a compact car produced by the General Motors' Oldsmobile division from 1991 until 1998 and was available as a sedan or coupe. It was offered in four different trim levels during its production run: S, SC, SL, and SCX. Available engines included different versions of the Oldsmobile-developed 2.3 L Quad 4 engine: the base single-cam L40 "Quad OHC", the DOHC LD2, the high-output LG0, and the special "W41" variant of the LG0 Quad 4 used in the SCX model. All were replaced for 1996 by a revised 2.4 L version. A pair of V6 engines were also offered including the Buick-sourced 90° 3.3 L "3300" V6, which was later replaced by Chevrolet's 60° 3.1 L "3100" V6. While a 5-speed manual transaxle was initially offered as the standard base transmission, most Achieva models were sold with 3-speed or 4-speed automatic transaxles. 1998 was the final model year for the Achieva, after which it was replaced in the Oldsmobile lineup by the Alero for the 1999 model year.
Initial production
The Achieva was first seen as a concept car at the 1991 Chicago Auto Show, positioned to replace Oldsmobile's compact Calais models. The Calais and Achieva share the same front wheel drive N-body architecture including identical wheelbase. The Achieva started regular production for the 1992 model year. It was offered in four different trim levels: S and SL, available on both coupes and sedans, and the sporty SC and SCX coupes. The base S offered a 120 hp (89 kW) 2.3 L "Quad OHC" 4-cylinder, while the SL had the DOHC 160 horsepower (120 kW) Quad 4 engine standard that was optional on the S model. A 160 hp (120 kW) 3.3 L V6 engine was optional for the SL. The SC coupe had a standard 180 hp (130 kW) high-output Quad 4 with 5-speed manual transmission or a 3 speed automatic, with the 3.3 L V6 being an option.

Common 1998 Oldsmobile Achieva problems
The Oldsmobile Achieva, introduced in 1992, was a compact car produced by General Motors. While it received some praise for its design and features, there were common problems reported by owners that affected its overall reliability and performance.
- Suspension and Steering Failures: Suspension and steering component lock-up, separation, or other failure were common complaints in rollover incidents. These failures could lead to a loss of control and potentially result in a rollover.
- Braking System Failures: Brake lock-up, both conventional and ABS systems, as well as other braking system failures, were frequently reported in rollover complaints. These failures could lead to a loss of braking ability, increasing the risk of accidents.
- Wheel and Tire Failures: Wheel rim, axle, or bearing separation or failure, as well as tire failure, were common issues reported in rollover complaints. These failures could lead to a loss of control and potentially result in a rollover.
- Quality Control: The Oldsmobile Achieva suffered from mediocre fit-and-finish, subpar materials, and sketchy electrics, which were common complaints among GM's contemporary offerings. These issues could affect the overall reliability and longevity of the vehicle.
- Rear Door Cut Line: Some owners found the rear door cut line unattractive and unappealing. This design feature was a subject of debate among enthusiasts, with some praising it for its modern interpretation of earlier 98s and others disliking it for its departure from traditional American sedan styling.
In summary, the Oldsmobile Achieva had several common problems that affected its reliability, performance, and overall quality. These issues included engine problems, suspension and steering failures, braking system failures, wheel and tire failures, quality control concerns, and design features that were not well-received by some owners.
What happened to the Oldsmobile Achieva?
While a 5-speed manual transaxle was initially offered as the standard base transmission, most Achieva models were sold with 3-speed or 4-speed automatic transaxles. 1998 was the final model year for the Achieva, after which it was replaced in the Oldsmobile lineup by the Alero for the 1999 model year.
What caused Oldsmobile failure?
Oldsmobile, one of the oldest American car brands, faced challenges that ultimately led to its downfall. Similar to Plymouth and Pontiac, Oldsmobile suffered from a lack of brand identity and differentiation (as you might see, there is an area-curing mistake in every example so far).
Why did GM get rid of Oldsmobile?
The Aurora caused only a minor stir, however, and by 2000 GM announced plans to phase out the Oldsmobile brand due to dwindling sales. On April 29, 2004, after 106 years, the last Olds rolled off the assembly line.

- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: 1998 OLDSMOBILE ACHIEVA. I OWN THE ABOVE MENTIONED CAR. I HAVE BEEN HAVING A LOT OF PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKES, NAMELY THE ABS SYSTEM. THE ABS LIGHT CONTINUALLY COMES ON AND MY ABS MAKES A FUNNY NOISE. THE BRAKES ALSO CLUNK SEVERAL TIMES WHEN THE VEHICLE IS FIRST STARTED. I HAVE TAKEN THIS TO BE REPAIRED AT SUBSTANTIAL COST AND I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR THAT WAS NOT WORKING CORRECTLY. WELL, IT WAS REPLACED AND THE PROBLEM STOPPED FOR A FEW DAYS. BUT, HAS JUST STARTED AGAIN AND IT IS THE SAME THING. THE ABS LIGHT COMES ON, THE BRAKES GET SPONGY AND FAIL AT SPEEDS FROM 5 MPH TO 55 MPH. THE NOISE FROM THE ABS STARTED AGAIN AND THE BRAKES ARE CLUNKING AGAIN WHEN THE VEHICLE IS FIRST STARTED. I CAN SEEM TO GET ANYBODY THAT IS ABLE TO DO A PERMANENT FIX. AND I CAN'T GET ANY INFO FROM GM ABOUT THIS. I NOTICED THAT SOMEONE ELSE HAD FILED A COMPLIANT ON THIS SITE ABOUT THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM AND IT WAS FOR THE SAME MODEL AND YEAR AS MY CAR. AND, SINCE IT PRESENTS A CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER, I FIGURED I WOULD FILE ONE TOO. *JB

EQUIPMENT PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-05-01
- Components: EQUIPMENT
- Summary: I PURCHASED A 1998 ODLSMOBILE ACHIEVA AS A PROGRAM CAR IN 1998 FROM BENDER CHEVY/OLDS/CADILLAC IN CLOVIS NM. SINCE THE DAY I DROVE OFF THE LOT I HAVE HAD AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM WITH THE ABS SYSTEM. THE ABS LIGHT ON THE DASH WILL COME ON INTERMITTENTLY AND THE BRAKES WILL FAIL AT SPEEDS LESS THEN 5MPH. THE BRAKE FAILURE OCCURED ON TWO OCCASIONS WHEN I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE, WHICH WAS IMMEDIATELY TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIR. THEY REPLACED THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR ON TWO OCCASIONS, BUT MADE NO EFFORT TO IDENTIFY THE TRUE SORCE ON THE PROBLEM. I GAVE THE CAR TO MY SON SHORTLY THEREAFTER TO DRIVE TO SCHOOL. HE JUST INFORMED ME YESTERDAY 01 MAY 05, THAT THE BRAKES WERE STILL INTERMITTENTLY DOING THE SAME THING AS THEY HAD DONE PREVIOUSLY. SPECIFICALLY THE BRAKES WILL FAIL AND THE CAR WILL SURGE FORWARD REQUIRING A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO STOP THE CAR. I HIGHLIGHT THIS BECAUSE IT IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND REQUIRES LOOKING INTO BY AN AGENCY LIKE THIS.

- VIN: 1G3NL52M2WM
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: STEERING WHEEL IS VERY LOOSE AND WHEN KEY WAS PUT IN STARTER, IT WOULD NOT START. AND I COULD NOT GET KEY OUT OF IGNITION. WHEN I HAD MY CAR TOWED TO THE CAR DEALER THEY TOLD ME THAT ONE OF THE TWO PINS THAT HOLD THE STEERING WHEEL ON WAS MISSING, AND THE OTHER ONE WAS HALF WAY OUT. IF I HADN'T HAD IT FIXED, THE MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD HAVE FALLEN OFF WHILE DRIVING!! WHEN I HAD DRIVEN IT THE NIGHT BEFORE, IT WAS FINE. I CALLED GMAC YESTERDAY, AND THEY CHECKED INTO IT AND DECIDED THAT SINCE IT WAS A 1998 VEHICLE AND HAD 120,000 MILES ON IT THAT THEY WOULD NOT COVER THE CHARGES OF $372.96 THAT IT COST TO HAVE IT REPAIRED. I FEEL THAT I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR A MECHANICAL DEFECT, THAT COULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT OR KILLED SOMEONE IF I WAS ON THE FREEWAY AND THE STEERING WHEEL FELL OFF!

I've been driving my Achieva for over 4 years now and it's been great! I've only had minor issues, mostly related to maintenance. Recently, I had an accident and had to get the whole vehicle repainted, but it looks as good as new now. I plan on keeping this car for as long as possible!
-
If you're considering buying an Achieva, it's important to keep in mind that the transmission may need to be rebuilt or replaced at some point. While this is a known issue with the Achieva and Grand Am, the vehicle itself is great. The 3.1 V6 engine provides both power and fuel economy, and in my opinion, it's even better than the famous GM 3.8 V6 found in most Grand Prixs. Additionally, the Achieva is incredibly comfortable to drive. I only had to replace the water pump once, so maintenance has been minimal. If your original transmission hasn't gone out by 80,000 miles, I would highly recommend getting it serviced or checked to avoid spending $1,400 on a rebuilt transmission.
-
This is my first time driving an American car, and I'm pleasantly surprised by how reliable it has been. It's also incredibly comfortable and rides smoothly on the highway.
-
This is such a great car! It's economical to run, super reliable, and so easy to handle and park. It's not too small like a sub-compact, but not too big for city driving either. The look inside and outside may be plain, but it's actually really comfortable. And the best part? I've never had a single mechanical problem in the four years I've owned it. I highly recommend it!
-
Great car! I'm having a bit of trouble with the power windows on mine though. My brother is a car expert and he's noticed that the power windows on almost every Oldsmobile Achieva seem to be broken.

This vehicle has some quirks, so it may not be the best choice for those who spend a lot of time on the road.
Darrin Schuppe 2024-05-20
The ABS, CHECK ENGINE, and ETS OFF lights are constantly illuminated, indicating a persistent issue. The engine's power output is significantly reduced, rendering the car unsatisfactory. Additionally, the car has a tendency to stall, requiring at least 5 minutes of pumping the gas and turning the key to restart. These issues are unacceptable and require immediate attention.
Forrest Morissette 2024-03-08
This car has been in my family for generations, and I've had the pleasure of driving it often, so I'm very familiar with its features. Overall, it's a great little car with a smooth ride and impressive safety features. However, there are a few things that could be improved. Occasionally, the 'check engine' and 'ETS off' lights come on, which can be frustrating. The repair shop suggested it might be an issue with the oxygen sensor, but they're not sure why it's affecting the traction control. Additionally, there's a rattling sound when the engine is first started while warm, but it usually goes away after a minute.

Royal Piece of Crap had two trunk releases and two window motors replaced, along with a CO2 chip. Unfortunately, there is now another issue with the catalytic converter. However, I decided to upgrade to a brand new Buick Century.
