History
The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).
For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.
In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

- Summary: 8 speed transmission shudder reported by GMC for my model. My truck has 35,500 miles and has the shudder posted in a technical service bulletin by GM. The supposed fix is x 20 quart fluid flush, new filter, and flash the computer. GM will not cover under any warranty as they say this is a “fluid change” even though the manual says this fluid should not be changed until 72,000 miles. The dealerships act like they are just hearing about this which is a total lie. They were told over a year ago if they had any new on lot to change the transmission fluid to mobile one synthetic before selling them. This should be a recall as GM knew this was an issue during manufacture. This is a $1200 repair that should be covered by GM.

- Summary: #1 While merging onto the highway, the vehicle began to shake violently and have a sudden lose of power due to a misfire on cylinder 6 and 4. I was unable to merge onto the highway as the vehicle would not accelerate almost causing me to be hit from behind. I was able to get the vehicle off to the shoulder to avoid an accident as it was barely able to stay running and the CEL was flashing. The failed parts (AFM lifters/push rods and VLOM) have been removed from the engine and saved for review. #2 My family's safety was put at risk as the vehicle had a sudden lose of acceleration while trying to merge on the highway almost causing us to be hit from behind. #3 I spoke with my local GMC dealer and explained the situation and diagnosis that I have completed on the vehicle. That wanted me to pay out of pocket to tow the vehicle in and would not cover anything as the vehicle is barley out of powertrain warranty (72695 miles). I have been an engineer in the automotive industry for almost 10 years and can properly diagnose a vehicle and the issue it has. Trouble codes were provided along with pictures and videos as evidence. I understand when something is a safety issue and needs to be addressed as this is a common issue with GM 5.3l and 6.2l engines. I then spoke to GM corporate (Mandy, case# 9-12424996557) and once again they wanted me to pay for everything out of pocket even though this is clearly a safety concern with their product and the diagnosis had already been completed. This vehicle has all the maintenance records since it rolled off the showroom floor, proving that the failure is not related to neglect or poor maintenance of the vehicle. There is very clearly a design issue or manufacturing issue on this components. #4 Components are available for inspection by mfg. #5 There were not warning lights or any other indicators prior to the failure. Oil pressure was at 40PSI and engine temp was ~200F. All within the normal operating windows of the vehicle.

- Summary: In January 2024, I parked my truck in my garage and shortly after I smelled an electrical burning smell in our house. When I opened the garage, it had smoke throughout the garage and a very strong odor of electrical burning smell. I moved my vehicle outside and tried to find the source, but it was too strong to narrow it down, and the garage smelled like burnt electrical for days. I took the truck to a service shop and they could not find anything wrong at the time. Today, May 2024, I was having trouble getting my trailer lights working. Upon further inspection, I discovered the 7-way interface wiring harness on my vehicle had electrically shorted out and melted a hole in the plastic housing and left melted plastic on the truck frame. The tag on the wiring harness states TAG #138359 7-WAY INTERFACE HARNESS W/O 134971. I believe this electrical short/fire should be part of the NHSTA Recall 18E-014. That recall states those are aftermarket harnesses, but the harness on the vehicle in this complaint is original to the vehicle and was installed by the manufacturer. I plan to take the vehicle back to the dealer to have the harness replaced, but I am expecting pushback since the NHSTA recall states this is only aftermarket harnesses.

Made an appointment with the mechanic then a couple days later I was at a stop sign and the vehicle would not accelerate at all. I placed in park the tried shifting back into drive and still nothing. I had to turn the vehicle on and off twice before I was able to shift it in drive an it actully would accelerate. Even then it would shudder and not accelerate fully. Very dangerous. Just hit 100k miles. GMC Certified Mechanic said the transmission is shot and needs to be replaced. Cost to replace over $6,000.00 Bought the truck in 2020 for $35,500 and just paid it off.

The torque converter was replaced 2 times, it’s been in the shop 5-6 times and nothing fixed under the warranty when I purchased it. Finally the dealer I purchased from said they won’t take the vehicle back and won’t spend any more money on fixing the truck. Now it has become on my dime to figure it out since I gave up trying to have a shop diagnose and fix it. The last shop said I would have to pay to have the transmission removed and possibly have the valve body replaced since the dealer I purchased it from gave the second shop one chance to get it right. The transmission downshifts hard and clunks since the first day of purchase. Makes a weird wining noise still til this day. I have spoken with the owners of the dealership and they did not seem to care about my problem.

- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2020 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Yukon, and 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles equipped with a 5.3-liter engine, a 3.08-ratio rear axle and four-wheel drive. If a wheel-speed sensor fails, while the vehicle is traveling between 41 and 60 mph in four-wheel or automatic mode, the Electronic-Brake Control Module (EBCM) software may activate the driveline-protection system.
- Consequence: Unintended activation of the driveline-protection system will cause unintended braking on the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor, causing the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the EBCM, free of charge. The recall began December 11, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192261050.

- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Cadillac Escalade, 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, 2015-2018 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Yukon vehicles. The amount of vacuum created by the vacuum pump may decrease over time.
- Consequence: As the vacuum level drops, the brake assist decreases, increasing braking effort, extending the distance required to stop the vehicle, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Electronic Brake Control Module, free of charge. The recall began October 8, 2019. - Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks. The owner's manual for the affected vehicles may be missing instructions on how to use the tether anchorage and child restraint anchorage systems. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 225, "Child Restraint Anchorage Systems."
- Consequence: If the instructions are missing from the owner's manual, the child seat may be installed incorrectly and not be properly secured, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will provide a corrected insert for the owners manual, free of charge. The recall began on September 25, 2017. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), or 1-800-462-8782 (GMC). GM's number for this recall is 17307.

During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.

- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on August 4, 2017. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. The vehicle is available for purchase at $55k. When the engine is hot, it should idle smoothly without any missing or roughness. The transmission should shift smoothly, and the ride should be similar to that of a large SUV.

This is my favorite truck that I have ever owned, but there are some drawbacks. Firstly, if you can't jump a curb without popping a tire and bending a rim, then 22” rims don’t belong on a truck. Secondly, I was a little upset when I had to replace the magna ride shocks for $2k because you have to replace both front at the same time and the regular shocks were $70. However, the ride quality is superb and the handling when towing is excellent. At 125000 miles, I had to replace rods and lifters for over $6k. That being said, I have enjoyed the powerful 6.2 v8 a lot and getting 22mpg on the highway is nice. The 8-speed transmission has been a bit rough and clanks into gear sometimes, even since it was new, but it’s still going strong at 135k mi. Lastly, I wish the GPS and Apple Play would connect without a cord because sometimes it won’t work, but cleaning or replacing the cord fixes the issue. Why would they make a crew cab without rear air? I constantly have to direct my vents off of me for rear passengers. Overall, the powerful 6.2, towing, ride comfort, gas mileage, and luxury have made this my favorite truck to ever own.

It's a shame that this vehicle doesn't have reactive cruise control, as it would have been a great addition. It's also quite expensive, but hopefully it's worth the investment.

I purchased my dream vehicle, but unfortunately, I have been experiencing issues with the leather on the back seat scaling off. Despite the fact that the vehicle was previously bought back by GMX due to lemon law, GMC has been unable to identify or resolve the issue. As an experienced driver of over 50 years, I find it hard to believe that GMC mechanics cannot find a solution. I am now considering returning to a high-end Ford or Lincoln.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with the 2017 Denali truck that I leased in 2020. Overall, I really enjoyed the comfort features and driving experience. However, I did experience some issues with the transmission from the beginning. Despite several visits to the dealer and investigations, unfortunately, the issue was not resolved. I experienced several issues with my vehicle, including the Chevy shake which was resolved by rebalancing the tires that were off from the factory. Although the cruise control failed initially, it eventually came back on its own. Unfortunately, the entertainment system stopped working at 36k miles and required a costly repair of 1k. Despite these setbacks, I have decided to switch to a Ford for my next vehicle due to their reputation for reliability.

I have a 2017 GMC Sierra 6.2L 8-speed auto that I bought used with under 8k miles. It was fully loaded with the SLT All Terrain package, and it was a dream truck of mine to own. However, after a few weeks, the truck started to go downhill. The transmission clunks really bad on the 1-2 shift, bad enough to shake the truck. I took it to GMC several times, and after a few visits, they replaced some oil pump for the transmission and went to a different fluid, which fixed the problem for a few days. However, they now say it's normal. Then, once I got to about 45k miles, it threw an engine code (cold start/rough idle). After researching it a bit, people are saying that it refers to the injectors and that they are going out. GM found nothing wrong with the truck and won't fix it. Soon after, the A/C went out on the truck completely, and it won't cool at all, just blows hot. I'm disappointed that GM won't stand behind their product, especially since my family members have worked for GM for over 40 years and have owned nothing but GM. However, I'm hopeful that we can find a solution to this issue.
