Common 2009 Nissan Xterra problems

The 2009 Nissan Xterra, a rugged and versatile midsize SUV, is known for its off-road capabilities and spacious interior. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems reported by its owners.

One of the most prevalent issues with the 2009 Nissan Xterra is a defective fuel level sensor. This problem causes inaccurate fuel gauge readings, leading to the possibility of running out of fuel when the gauge indicates a half tank. This issue is particularly common in the 2001-2011 Xterra models, with many complaints from owners.

Another significant problem with the 2009 Nissan Xterra is a leaky radiator, especially in the 2005 model year. This issue may lead to transmission failure if not addressed promptly. The radiator leak may still occur even after tightening the cap, and if not repaired, it can result in costly transmission replacement or rebuilding.

Transmission failure is another common problem with the 2009 Nissan Xterra, particularly in the 2005 model year. This issue is primarily caused by the radiator defect, which can lead to failed transmission systems. Rebuilding or replacing the transmission is expensive, making this a critical concern for Xterra owners.

Fuel injector failure is also a problem for several Xterra models, including the 2009 version. A failed fuel injector can cause symptoms like engine misfires, loss of power, hesitation when accelerating, and excessive vibrations. The check engine light will come on when the vehicle detects a bad fuel injector.

In summary, the 2009 Nissan Xterra, while a capable and versatile midsize SUV, has several common problems that potential buyers should be aware of. These include a defective fuel level sensor, leaky radiator, transmission failure, and fuel injector failure. Proper maintenance and prompt addressing of these issues can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-05-30
  • VIN: 5N1AN08W59C
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I PURCHASED THIS 1 OWNER TRADE IN 4/11/19. AS OF 5/9/19 I STARTED TO EXPERIENCE PRONOUNCED ISSUES WITH LOSING POWER AROUND 40 MPH . DIAGNOSTICS CONFIRMED THAT IT WAS DUE TO A LEAK IN THE COOLING COIL WHICH RESULTED IN COOLANT IN MY TRANSMISSION FLUID WHICH DAMAGE THE TRANSMISSION. I HAVE FILED A CLAIM UNDER THE CLASS ACTION REQUIRED EXTENDED WARRANTY. AS I WAS UNAWARE OF THIS ISSUE AND DIDN'T KNOW WHAT WAS HAPPENING AND HONESTLY AFRAID TO FIND OUT SINCE I STILL OWE 5000 DOLLARS ON THE CAR I PUT OFF GETTING THE DIAGNOSTICS. THE FINAL STRAW CAME WHEN I WAS MERGING ONTO THE HIGHWAY AND LOST POWER TRYING TO MERGE INTO FAST TRAFFIC. I FINALLY CALLED A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP FOR DIAGNOSTICS ON 5/31/19 AND TOOK THE FIRST AVAILABLE APPOINTMENT ON 6/4/19. I WAS TOLD THERE MAY BE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY AND TO CALL THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP CONFIRMED THE DIAGNOSIS THE NEXT DAY 6/5/19 AND NISSAN IS REVIEWING MY CLAIM. I AM PRAYING THEY WON'T DENY IT BECAUSE THE DIAGNOSTICS WERE COMPLETED A COUPLE BUSINESS DAY AFTER THE EXTENSION EXPIRED ON 5/31/19.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-06-23
  • VIN: 5N1AN08W69C
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT 23 JUNE 2011 LOCATION: PLEASANT VALLEY TRAIL, PANAMINT MOUNTAINS, DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK, CA TIME: APPROXIMATELY 6 PM I WAS DRIVING ON A POPULAR 4X4 TRAIL ON THE WESTERN EDGE OF DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK ON THE EVENING OF 23 JUNE 2011. I WAS ALONE AND CRAWLING DOWN A STEEP DECLINE IN 4 WHEEL DRIVE, LOW RANGE, IN 1ST GEAR. I MADE A TRANSITION FROM ONE SET OF DEEP RUTS TO ANOTHER. THE CAR ROCKED FROM THE DRIVER'S SIDE TO THE PASSENGER SIDE AND BACK. THE MOTION WAS ABRUPT, BUT NOT VIOLENT IN ANY WAY, AND THE SAME MOTION THAT ANY OTHER VEHICLE THAT TRAVELS ON THIS POPULAR TRAIL WOULD FACE. ON COMPLETION OF THE ROCKING MOTION THE SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. AT THE TIME OF DEPLOYMENT MY FACE WAS AGAINST THE WINDOW CHECKING MY SIDE CLEARANCE ON THE ROAD. MY ELBOW WAS RESTING ON THE WINDOW SILL, AND I WAS STEERING WITH ONE HAND AT THE 9 O'CLOCK POSITION AND THE OTHER AT THE 5 O'CLOCK POSITION. ON DEPLOYMENT MY FACE WAS STRUCK ON THE LEFT FRONT AND SIDE, LEAVING ME WITH FACIAL PAIN, BRUISING, A BLOODY NOSE, AND RINGING EARS. THE ARM RESTING ON THE WINDOW SILL WAS FORCED DOWN AND FORWARD, LEVERING MY SHOULDER UP AND FORWARD. I WAS DAZED AND DISORIENTED FOR A FEW MINUTES. THE SEATBELT PRE-TENSIONER FIRED, PULLING THE BELT TIGHT ENOUGH AROUND MY PELVIS TO LEAVE BRUISES AND PAIN. I WAS VERY LUCKY THAT THE INCIDENT OCCURRED WHILE I WAS IN FIRST GEAR, LOW RANGE. THE VEHICLE STOPPED WHEN I PULLED MY FOOT FROM THE ACCELERATOR, IF I HAD BEEN IN 4 WHEEL HIGH RANGE THE VEHICLE WOULD HAVE LIKELY CONTINUED DOWNHILL AND GONE OVER THE EMBANKMENT AND DOWN A 400' 60 DEGREE SLOPE. THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT PRODUCT DESIGN ERROR AND COULD HAVE RESULTED IN FAR GREATER INJURIES OR DEATH. THE MOTION THAT SET OFF THE DEPLOYMENT WAS ONE THAT I HAVE HAD ON HUNDREDS OF OCCASIONS WITH OTHER VEHICLES IN MY MORE THAN 30 YEARS OF OFF ROAD DRIVING EXPERIENCE. IT OCCURRED ON A POPULAR TRAIL USED BY THOUSANDS OF VEHICLES EACH YEAR. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO THE AIR BAG IN THE STEERING WHEEL. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED AND THE FAILURE CONTINUED WHEN THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO ENGAGE THE HORN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 500 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 26,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-01-15
  • VIN: 5N1AN08W99C
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: PREMATURE CLUTCH FAILURE IN 2ND GENERATION NISSAN XTERRA. CLUTCH BURNT OUT AT UNDER 5000 MILES WITHOUT WARNING WHILE DRIVING IN SNOW IN 4WD LO. I HAVE 20 YEARS MANUAL DRIVING EXPERIENCE, AND HAVE NEVER BURNED OUT A CLUTCH. DEALERSHIP REFUSED TO PAY FOR IT BECAUSE IT IS A WEAR ITEM. MANY OTHERS HAVE HAD SAME PROBLEM - SOME WITH TRANSMISSION DISENGAGING WITHOUT ANY NOTICE WHICH COULD BE VERY DANGEROUS ON A HIGHWAY. MANY HAVE DESCRIBED CLUTCH AS "EXPLODED" OR "TOTALLY SHREDDED" WHEN TAKEN APART. WE BELIEVE THIS IS BECAUSE NISSAN DUMPED THE 350 Z CLUTCH, WHICH IS MADE FOR A LIGHTWEIGHT SPORTS CAR, INTO A HEAVY AND POWERFUL 4WD. THIS CLUTCH IS UNDERPOWERED FOR THE 265 HP XTERRA. NISSAN REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THIS PROBLEM, YET IT CONTINUES TO HAPPEN. MORE INFO AND DETAILS OF THE FREQUENCY OF THIS FAILURE CAN BE FOUND AT EDMUNDS.COM UNDER THE NISSAN XTERRA CLUTCH PROBLEM POST. NISSAN HAS BEEN TOTALLY INCONSISTENT IN ITS PARTIAL, COMPLETE, OR LACK OF REIMBURSED FOR THIS PROBLEM. *TR

Negative 2009 Nissan Xterra car reviews

  1. Grover Bins 2024-04-10

I love my Xterra! However, I've been having some trouble starting it on very cold mornings during my 3rd winter in Maine. I've done some research and found out that this is a known issue with Xterra's ECM. Despite this issue, I still think it's a great car with amazing power and handling capabilities!

  2. Rex Hirthe 2024-04-08

The SUV is essentially a truck with an SUV body, and while it has some issues such as a roaring noise when slowing down and a whining noise between 45 and 50 mph, these problems can be addressed during the next scheduled visit. On the bright side, the gas mileage is a little better than advertised. The ride is decent, and although the center armrest is a bit far back, overall it's a good vehicle.

Positive 2009 Nissan Xterra car reviews

  1. Nicholas Thiel 2024-11-22

Bought the first Xterra in May of 07. Loved it so much that my wife decided to trade in her Ford for another Xterra last month.

  2. Davonte Nicolas 2024-11-07

The car's sturdy truck frame gives a sense of confidence, especially in bad weather and on rough trails. It's also fun to drive in the snow and slush! The vehicle feels safe, and the VDC works well when roads are slick. With good ground clearance and key components tucked up under the frame, it has excellent acceleration and a very responsive engine and transmission. Additionally, it's quiet on the highway and comfortable for four on a trip.

  3. Sean Windler 2024-11-07

Great off road! Just be aware that the exhaust muffler may leak from the top rear seam, which can damage the wiring harness and other components. It's a good idea to check the u-joints frequently and keep up with regular maintenance to ensure everything runs smoothly.

  4. Crawford Murazik 2024-10-18

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my new Xterra. After doing some research, I decided that this was the SUV for me and I couldn't be happier with my decision. I love the power it has and it's been handling really well in the snow and ice. I'm also really impressed with the build quality so far. Although I've only had the car for about 6 weeks, I'm extremely impressed with it!

  5. Osborne Ortiz 2024-08-20

As an avid camper, hunter, and outdoorsman, I needed a vehicle that could handle all my needs. The Xterra was the clear choice for me, especially when compared to the FJ Cruiser. Not only does it have more horsepower and torque, but it also has similar features at a much more affordable price. With a towing capacity of 5,500 lbs, it's a breeze to tow my two ATVs to the sand dunes. While the fuel economy may not be the best, the 265 hp and 281 ft. lb. torque make it worth it. I highly recommend this vehicle to anyone who needs a daily driver that can also handle off-road adventures.
