Common 2012 Nissan Xterra problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Nissan Xterra 2012, several common problems have been reported. These include:

  • Radiator Leaks: Reports indicate that radiator leaks have been a common issue with the Nissan Xterra, particularly in the 2005 model year. Even after tightening the radiator cap, leaks may persist. If not addressed promptly, these leaks can lead to engine overheating and eventually result in transmission failure. Early detection of this problem may only require repairing the lower intake manifold.
  • Transmission Failure: Transmission failure has been a significant problem for many Nissan Xterra units from the 2005 model year. This issue is often a consequence of radiator leaks. When coolant mixes with transmission fluid, it accelerates corrosion in the transmission, causing it to slip or overheat. Replacing a transmission is complex and costly, emphasizing the importance of monitoring radiator leaks to prevent this issue.
  • Timing Chain Defects: The 2005 Xterra model year has been associated with faulty timing chains, which can lead to a high-pitched whine from the engine. This defect can be a costly repair, with some reports indicating a repair cost of almost $3,000. The faulty timing chain is a significant issue that owners of the 2005 Xterra have faced.

These common problems with the Nissan Xterra 2012 highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any warning signs to prevent more severe issues and ensure the longevity of the vehicle.

What is the major problem of Nissan Xterra?

Many drivers consider the 2015 model year the best in terms of performance, reliability, and relative modernity. The 2012 and 2014 Nissan Xterra models also get good marks. A few common problems of the Nissan Xterra include a faulty fuel level sensor, radiator leaks, and transmission failure.

Does Xterra have transmission problems?

When the transmission heats up, it can cause damage to various parts and components, which can be costly to repair. In some cases, the cooling problem with the transmission on a Nissan Xterra may be caused by a faulty radiator, which can fail to effectively cool the transmission fluid.

What is good about Nissan Xterra?

The Nissan Xterra debuted as a 2000 model. Based on Nissan's Frontier pickup, it was made to be a rugged, basic, truck-ish SUV to serve as a less-expensive alternative to the Pathfinder. Highs include good off-roading and towing capacity. The cockpit has a clean, no-frills look.

Are Nissan Xterras expensive to maintain?

Solid Reliability

The annual repair costs for this vehicle are likely to be lower than average at around $514, which is a plus for potential owners. However, you might need to take your Xterra for unscheduled repairs about 0.3 times per year, similar to other vehicles in its class.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-10-14
  • VIN: 5N1AN0NW9CC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: 1) Rubber stopper under clutch pedal has failed multiple times, preventing vehicle from starting in various locations, usually parking lots and mostly after dark which presents potential safety concerns. This is a rubber part that allows vehicle to start only when clutch is depressed. I request that several/multiple of these be provided at no cost to keep in glove compartment since the poor quality of part manufacturing will most definitely cause future failure of each in the future. In addition, an explanation and instructions for removing broken part and replacing with new part is difficult for one person since you have to crawl up under the dashboard, locate the part, remove the broken part and correctly replace with a new part. I have purchased 7 pieces which have all broken and been charged approximately $7 each. The first time was the date of purchase and there have been more than 5 additional incidents since. Rubber stopper 46512-9bp1c purchased 9 between 10/14/12 and 4/6/22. Photos of those purchased just in the last couple of years

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-04-04
  • VIN: 5N1AN0NW9CC
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Extreme smell of gas after filling gas tank while out of town. Odor was so strong it required all windows to be down to drive without feeling affected by fumes and I was terrified that someone would fluck a cigarette out of a car somewhere, especially at a stop light, and cause an explosion. Once the gas tank was only half full or less, the odor diminished. Dealership found that this issue had been reported on other vehicles but did not qualify as a recall. Dealership found faulty gasket INSIDE gas tank and required the entire tank be replaced at a cost to me of more than $2000. I can get receipts from Charlottesville Nissan Dealership.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-02-27
  • VIN: 5N1AN0NW8CC
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I recently had a diagnosis of radiator coolant mixing with transmission following my vehicle being towed bc I lost power while driving with no warning signs. I was given an estimate for repairs of $5000. I had the extended warranty but wasn't told of the radiator issues w Xterra. My vehicle mileage is 128,000. Just past the 100,000 mileage mark. I just read an article that states this is a known issue with Nissan Xterra where lawsuits were filed. I just paid $7000 loan in full. I would not have done this had I known I would need this $ to repair my vehicle.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-07-28
  • VIN: 5N1AN0NW7CC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: PREMATURE CLUTCH FAILURE ON MY MANUAL TRANSMISSION. LESS THAN 48000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER AND THE CLUTCH IS GONE. THIS IS FAR TOO LITTLE TRAVEL FOR THE CLUTCH TO BE FAILING AT. DEGRADATION HAS ADVANCED RAPIDLY OVER A MATTER OF WEEKS AND DAYS AND NOW I FEAR HAVING MY FAMILY RIDE IN THE VEHICLE IN CASE THEY BECOMING STRANDED OR NEED TO AVOID A CRASH AND CANNOT DUE TO LOSS OF POWER. GENERAL CONSENSUS IS THAT THE CLUTCH IS TOO SMALL FOR THIS TRUCK. NISSAN CLAIMS THIS IS A WEAR ITEM AND WILL NOT COVER REPLACEMENT UNDER WARRANTY, OR ADMIT THERE IS AN ISSUE AT ALL. NISSAN IS QUICK TO BLAME DRIVER'S FOR 'RIDING THE CLUTCH' AS THE REASON FOR THE FAILURE. THIS IS A COP OUT, PARTICULARLY WHEN ONE CONSIDERS THE NUMBER OF XTERRA OWNER'S EXPERIENCING THIS ISSUE.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-09-13
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I'M FILING A COMPLAINT BEFORE I HAVE AN INCIDENT. I OWN A NISSAN XTERRA. MANY OTHER NISSAN XTERRA OWNERS HAVE HAD SPONTANEOUS SIDE CURTAIN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT WHEN TRAVELING VERY SLOWLY, GENERALLY ON DIRT ROADS. SOME OF THESE DEPLOYMENTS HAVE CAUSED INJURIES. THE PROBLEM APPEARS TO BE COMMON ON ALL 2ND GENERATION NISSAN XTERRAS (2006-2016). THE FOLLOWING LINKS ARE TO XTERRA FORUM THREADS AND PROFESSIONAL PUBLICATIONS ABOUT RANDOM AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT IN XTERRAS. THERE ARE MANY MORE DOCUMENTED CASES OF THIS ONLINE, THE LINKS BELOW ARE A TASTE. THIS ALSO MAY BE A PROBLEM WITH NISSAN FRONTIERS, WHICH ARE BASICALLY THE TRUCK VARIANT OF THE XTERRA. ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-01-31
  • VIN: 5N1AN0NW1CC
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: VEHICLE'S ENGINE SEIZED WHILE BEING OPERATED AT A LOW RATE OF SPEED. REASON GIVEN BY DEALERSHIP WHEN TOWED IN WAS NO OIL IN THE ENGINE HOWEVER THERE WAS NO WARNING LIGHT FOR EITHER OIL OR ENGINE ISSUE DISPLAYED AT ANY TIME LEADING UP TO ENGINE FAILURE. THERE HAD BEEN A PREVIOUS OIL LEAK APPROXIMATELY 10 MONTHS EARLIER WHICH HAD BEEN REPAIRED. THERE HAD BEEN NO INCIDENTS IN THE INTERIM AND NO INDICATION OF ISSUES. THERE WAS A RECALL RELATED TO THE OIL FILTER AND ENGINE BUT ACCORDING TO NISSAN, MY VEHICLE WAS NOT SUBJECT TO THE RECALL. I WAS FORCED TO PAY IN ADVANCE OF WORK BEING STARTED FOR A FULL ENGINE REPLACEMENT DESPITE THE FACT THAT I HAD ONLY 4 MONTHS LEFT ON MY 39 MONTH LEASE. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-04-30
  • VIN: 5N1AN0NW2CC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I FIRST NOTICED MY CLUTCH START TO SLIP UPON LEAVING A STOP SIGN. 15 MILES LATER I WAS STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITH NO GEARS. MY CLUTCH HAD GONE OUT ON A BRAND NEW XTERRA WITH 1800 MILES ON IT. IT WAS TOWED TO THE CONCORD, CA NISSAN DEALER WHERE I PURCHASED IT. I WAS BADGERED ON ABUSING THE CAR SINCE IT HAD SOME MUD ON THE TIRES AND THEY INSISTED I DID NOT NO HOW TO DRIVE MANUAL. I HAD TO REPLACE THE CLUTCH AND "BLUED" FLYWHEEL SINCE THEY DID NOT COVER IT WITH THE WARRANTY. THEY SAID THIS WAS THE WORST FLYWHEEL THE SHOP HAS SEEN. HERE I AM WITH 22,000 MILES ON THE CAR AND THE CLUTCH IS SEVERELY SLIPPING AGAIN. I WILL BRING MY CAR IN TO NISSAN TOMORROW. I BOUGHT A NISSAN BECAUSE I EXPECTED HIGH RELIABILITY STANDARDS BUT I WAS WRONG. THIS IS THE LAST NISSAN I WILL BUY AND I WILL CERTAINLY PASS ON THE WORD TO MY FRIENDS. THERE HAVE BEEN LOTS OF PEOPLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEMS SO I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE. *TR

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-11-30
  • VIN: 5N1AN0NW7CC
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT INTERMITTENTLY GOES ON W/ SEAT OCCUPIED (120LB ADULT), SEAT BELT FASTENED, SEAT IN NORMAL UPRIGHT POSITION - INDICATING THE AIR BAG IS DEACTIVATED. I ASKED THE DEALER I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE (NEW) FROM ABOUT THIS ANOMALY AT THE FIRST SERVICE (2220 MILES/3MOS) ON 2-20-2013 AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO - "READ THE OWNERS MANUAL". WE DID MANY DIFFERENT EXPERIMENTS WITH SEATING POSITION, SEAT BACK ANGLE ON SUBSEQUENT TRIPS, WITH NO POSITIVE RESULTS. THE ONLY EXPERIMENT THAT PROVIDED POSITIVE RESULTS WAS FOR HER TO HOLD OUR 20 LB DOG ON HER LAP - NOT A SATISFACTORY OR PERMANENT SOLUTION. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO ANOTHER DEALER FOR THIS SPECIFIC ISSUE ON 4-22-2013 AND WAS TOLD THEY COULD DO NOTHING, AND THAT I SHOULD CONTACT NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS WHICH I HAVE DONE WITH ZERO HELP OR SATISFACTION AS OF TODAY. AS SOMEONE WHO SPENT SOME 30 YEARS IDENTIFYING PROBLEMS LIKE THIS AND OVERSEEING THE DEVELOPMENT, TESTING AND PRODUCTION OF FIXES FOR AIRCRAFT, THE ENGINEERING REQUIRED TO PROVIDE OWNERS LIKE US WITH A SUITABLE FIX TO THIS PROBLEM WOULD NOT SEEM TO ME TO BE ALL THAT LARGE OR COSTLY. GIVEN THAT THIS REOCCURRING PROBLEM IN AN IMPORTANT SAFTEY SYSTEM ON THIS AND OTHER NISSAN MODELS AS WELL AS MANY IN VEHICLES PRODUCED BY OTHER MANUFACTURERS, I AM CONFIDENT YOUR OFFICES COULD PRODUCE QUICK AND MEANINGFUL RESULTS FOR EVRYONE - OWNERS AND MANUFACTURERS BY APPLYING PRESSURE AND ESTABLISHING A MEANINGFUL CRITERION FOR THE ACTIVATION/DEACTIVATION OF THE PASSENGER SEAT AIR BAG SYSTEM. *TR

2012 Nissan Xterra recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2012 Nissan Xterra.

2012-09-20
  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:HUB
  • Summary: Nissan is recalling certain model year 2012 Frontier, Pathfinder, and Xterra two-wheel drive vehicles manufactured from June 19, 2012, through July 12, 2012. These vehicles may have been equipped with front wheel hubs that may not meet the design hardness specifications. A wheel hub that was manufactured below hardness specification may wear prematurely and eventually crack.
  • Consequence: If the vehicle is driven in this condition, the wheel hub may break, possibly resulting in a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replaced the left and right side front wheel hub assemblies free of charge. The safety recall began on October 22, 2012. Owners may contact Nissan Customer Service at 1-800-647-7261.
2011-12-19
  • Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2011 INFINITI FX, MODEL YEAR 2012 INFINITI M, MODEL YEAR 2011-2012 NISSAN FRONTIER, MODEL YEAR 2011-2012 NISSAN XTERRA, MODEL YEAR 2011-2012 NISSAN PATHFINDER, AND MODEL YEAR 2012 NISSAN NV VEHICLES. SOME OF THE BOLTS THAT CONNECT THE ENGINE OIL COOLER AND THE ENGINE OIL FILTER TO THE ENGINE IN THESE VEHICLES MAY HAVE BEEN MANUFACTURED TO BELOW SPECIFICATION STRENGTH. AS A RESULT, THE BOLT MAY BREAK AT THE OIL FILTER ATTACHMENT POINT AND CAN CAUSE AN ENGINE OIL LEAK.
  • Consequence: IF THERE IS AN ENGINE OIL LEAK, THE ENGINE OIL PRESSURE WOULD DROP AND THE ENGINE COULD SEIZE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: NISSAN WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE CONNECTOR BOLTS FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON JANUARY 30, 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

Negative 2012 Nissan Xterra car reviews

  1. Rhett Carroll 2024-10-02

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to let you know that my 2012 Xterra is currently in the shop having its transmission rebuilt. Unfortunately, there were no warning signs before it broke down, but I'm hopeful that it will be back on the road soon. It only has 47k miles on it, so I'm confident that it will be running smoothly again in no time!

  2. Jacques Price 2024-09-26

I purchased my Xterra specifically for its off-road capabilities and wanted to share my thoughts after driving it for 36k miles. I opted for the manual transmission model because I was unsure if Nissan had resolved the automatic transmission issue. The first gear on the 6-speed is well-suited for crawling around technical rocky terrain, which is prevalent in my home state of Nevada. However, the stock tires were not suitable for hard wheeling conditions and performed poorly in snow and mud. I had to pull the fuse to allow the front wheels to spin in the snow, which unfortunately resulted in the front axle blowing up. Towing can be a bit sketchy, but overall, the vehicle's functions performed above average. The Rockford Fosgate sound system was excellent for a stock radio, and the fuel economy never exceeded 17 mpg, even when cruising down the highway in 6th gear. The paint on the Xterra was impressive, as it withstood scrapes from bushes and buffed out nicely during detailing. Overall, I enjoyed my Xterra, as it was not perfect but performed well off-road and had enough room for camping gear and other awkward items with the seats folded down.

  3. Cornelius Kohler 2024-05-27

I was looking for a four-wheel drive to navigate Iowa's back roads during the winter with all the space of an SUV. My 08 Edge was not cutting it anymore. I really like my Xterra, but on windy days, I seem to sway as much as semis do because of the height of the truck. I thought I could overlook the lack of powered seats, navigation in the dash, or TVs in the headrests, but I can't. For the final price of all the options I could add, I wish Nissan would have allowed or given the choice of those three other options. I am surprised Nissan would not offer those unless you want a Murano. I am just really bummed over the limited options.

Positive 2012 Nissan Xterra car reviews

  1. Casimer Rolfson 2024-10-27

This is my second Xterra. The first was an '09. I have taken good care of this car, getting the oil changed between 3k-4k miles and rotating the tires approximately every 5k miles. While the interior is all hard plastic and the sound system is fairly lacking, I have found this vehicle to be reliable. Living in Utah and working in cold climates, the environmental systems were not the greatest, as it took a long time to heat up and the defrost vents could have been better placed. However, despite its flaws, the Xterra has been a great vehicle for me. Two things that stand out with this vehicle are its off-road capabilities and acceleration. It is an off-road beast and can handle any job site with ease. Additionally, for such a heavy vehicle and a V6, it can really move. While I have considered other options, I have not found anything that comes close to the performance of the Xterra. If any car manufacturer is looking at this, a compact-small SUV with an actual engine would be nice.4cyl engines may not last as long, but they do provide better mileage. However, if you're looking for more power under the hood and the ability to handle jobsites or winter conditions, you may want to consider other options. It doesn't have to be a trail ripper or a towing beast, but having that extra power can definitely come in handy.

  2. Manley Gusikowski 2024-08-03

Great rugged SUV! It's so reliable, has an excellent powertrain, is really roomy, and is tough as nails.

  3. Ladarius Quigley 2024-07-08

The last of body on frame SUV (except Jeep Wrangler). You'll be pleased to know that this competent old school platform comes with new world reliability. I've owned this SUV for 3 years, and it still runs just as well as the day I bought it.

  4. Osborne Schneider 2024-07-02

You've had quite a few vehicles in your driving life, including a Mustang GT, Maxima, several Nissan trucks, and now your second Xterra. It's great to hear that this vehicle meets all your current needs, especially with 4WD for winter commutes, getting to the back of the woods, and job sites. The cargo area is perfect for your furry friend, while the rear seats can accommodate gear or occasional passengers. It's impressive that you're enjoying the 6-speed manual and 260hp, which are perfect for you. The PRO 4X and Bilstein shocks make a BIG difference in handling and ride, which is fantastic. It's great to hear that you're getting 20.5 mpg with the manual, which is an improvement from your previous Xterra. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

  5. Harry Feeney 2024-06-27

I purchased this truck new on 08/12 and it has been a great investment for me. It's a 6-speed manual and is really fun to drive. It's great off-road and has lots of room in the back when the seats are folded down. I especially love the roof cargo box, which makes it perfect for fishing trips. It has lots of power and handles great in the snow. However, I must admit that the ride can be a bit bumpy and the gas mileage isn't great, even with a stick (15 city, 17 highway). The interior is plain and starting to rattle, and the cloth seats are beginning to wear. They're not the best for long rides, and the truck isn't the best in the rain. Additionally, there are some rust spots on the rear bumper and roof. Despite these minor issues, it's still a great truck for me. I haul a lot of stuff daily and it has the room and power I need. I've been diligent about changing the oil every 5k with Mobil 1, and have replaced the tires, spark plugs, brakes, rotors, rear hatch shocks, brake pedal and clutch pedal rubber shoes, battery, headlight bulbs, transfer case oil, and rear bearings, as well as the cabin and motor air filters. Overall, it's a great truck for the money!
