1991 Chevrolet Camaro problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Camaro is a mid-size American automobile manufactured by Chevrolet, classified as a pony car. It first went on sale on September 29, 1966, for the 1967 model year and was designed to compete with the Ford Mustang. The Camaro shared its platform and major components with the Firebird, produced by General Motors' Pontiac division that was also introduced for 1967.

Four distinct generations of the Camaro were developed before production ended in 2002. The nameplate was revived on a concept car that evolved into the fifth-generation Camaro; production started on March 16, 2009.

The Camaro was discontinued at the end of the 2024 model year. Production ended in December 2023. However, Chevrolet has stated, "This is not the end of Camaro's story."

Common 1991 Chevrolet Camaro problems

The 1991 Chevrolet Camaro has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues:

  • Engine Cooling System Problems: Some 1991 Camaro owners have reported issues with the engine cooling system, including an oil odor condition that occurs after changing the oil and typically lasts approximately 1000 miles.
  • Seat Belt Anchorage Problems: The 1991 Camaro has been reported to have seat belt anchorage problems, with metal latchplates that may not engage the buckle assemblies, causing a "no latch" condition. Movement of the seat occupant in this condition could cause latchplate release from the buckle.
  • Visibility Problems: Some 1991 Camaro owners have reported visibility problems, including poor bond adhesion between the windshield glass and the mounting, which could allow the windshield to separate from the vehicle during a collision.
  • Exhaust System Problems: Some 1991 Camaro owners have reported issues with the exhaust system, including white smoke and a similar smell to gasoline. These issues may be caused by a fuel delivery problem, a bad throttle position sensor, or bad spark plugs.
  • Idle Issues: Some 1991 Camaro owners have reported idle issues, including rough idling and stalling. These issues may be caused by a coolant temp sensor, fuel pump or filter, throttle position sensor, or spark plugs.
  • Structure Problems: The 1991 Camaro has been reported to have structure problems, including weak hinges on the driver's seat that can cause the seat to collapse.

These are some of the most common problems reported by 1991 Camaro owners. If you own a 1991 Camaro and are experiencing any of these issues, it is recommended that you consult with a certified mechanic or dealership for further assistance.

HOWEVER, THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. THE CAMARO HAS BEEN SITTING IN A GARAGE FOR THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS DUE TO SAFETY CONCERNS. I WAS SPEAKING TO MARTIN WHEELER AT GM CUSTOMER SERVICE CENTER WHO SAID HE COULD NOT FIND A MANAGER TO SPEAK WITH ME (THEY WERE ALL OCCUPIED). I KNOW THIS IS AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR AND ALSO IT MAKES THE CAR VERY UNSAFE TO USE AS WELL AS RELEASING FUMES INSIDE OF THE ATTACHED GARAGE WHICH WOULD BE CONSIDERED UNHEALTHY. FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-07-23
  • VIN: 1G1FP23E4ML
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: I NOTICED THAT WHEN THIS CAR WAS FILLED, FUEL WOULD LEAK FROM THE TANK RIGHT WHERE THE FILLER TUBE GOES IN. I ALSO COULD HEAR A RATTLE IN THE REAR WHILE DRIVING. I PULLED THE FUEL TANK TO HAVE IT SENT OUT FOR REPAIR. AFTER FURTHER INSPECTION I REALIZED THAT THE RATTLE WAS COMING FROM THE LOOSE BAFFLES IN THE TANK AND THAT THE LOOSE FILLER NECK RATTLED AGAINST THE INTERNAL BAFFLES ALSO. I FELT THAT SOLDERING THE JOINT WOULD BE A QUICK FIX, BUT BECAUSE OF THE LOOSENESS, IT WOULD ONLY LEAK AGAIN IN TIME. AT THIS POINT I DECIDED TO JUST REPLACE THE TANK(AND FUEL PUMP). I WENT ON THE INTERNET TO SHOP FOR PRICES. WHILE USING '1991CAMARO FUEL TANK' AS SEARCH WORDS, I FOUND OUT ABOUT THE RECALL. WHEN I QUESTIONED A LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALER WITH MY VIN # THEY SAID IT WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE CAMPAIGN. I CALLED CHEVROLET CUSTOMER SERVICE WITH THE SAME RESULTS. IT SEEMED ODD THAT EVERYWHERE I LOOKED ON THE INTERNET THERE WAS INFORMATION THAT SAID MY CAR WAS INVOLVED, YET THEY SAID THERE WAS NO RECALL ON MY CAR. I HAVE ALREADY ORDERED A NEW TANK AND PUMP FROM CHEVROLET. THIS IS MY SON'S CAR AND I WANT IT IN GOOD RUNNING ORDER BECAUSE HE LEAVES IN 2 WEEKS FOR COLLEGE. SO, WITH OR WITHOUT KNOWLEDGE OF THE RECALL THE REPAIR NEEDS TO BE DONE. I FEEL I SHOULD AT LEAST GET REIMBURSED FOR THE COST OF THE TANK. *PH

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-11-24
  • VIN: 1G1FP23E6ML
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: I HAVE HAD REJECTIONS FOR SAFETY INSPECTION STICKERS ANUALLY FOR A NUMBER OF CONSECUTIVE YEARS BECAUSE THE BRAKE LIGHT BUILT INTO THIS 1991 CAMARO REAR GLASS IS MADE OF HEAT REACTIVE PLASTIC WHICH MELTS WHEN THE BRAKES ARE HELD FOR LONG PERIODS (LIKE TRAFFIC JAMS). THE DEALER WILL GLADLY SELL THE OWNER A NEW ONE FOR A CONSIDERABLE SUM. BUT, IT IS MADE OF THE SAME HEAT REACTIVE PLASTIC AND DOES NOT HAVE VENTILATION TO DISAPATE THE HEAT...LIKE THE ONE ALREADY ON THE CAR. THIS PROBLEM AFFECTS ANY YEAR OF THIS DESIGN, SURELY INCLUDING THE '92'S AS WELL. IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO EASILY DETERMINE WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURS. ONE USUALLY FINDS OUT AT INSPECTION TIME OR BY BEING TICKETED BY THE POLICE. THE INSPECTION WORKER TOLD ME THAT ALMOST EVERY VEHICLE LIKE MINE FAILS THIS ONE PARTICULAR INSPECTION REQUIREMENT DUE TO ITS DESIGN. CAN THE NHTSA INVESTIGATE AND IF FOUND VALID, REQUIRE GM TO PROVIDE A SOLUTION FOR THIS POOR DESIGN? MANY OTHER PLASTIC COMPONENTS IN THIS VEHICLE SUFFER A PREMATURE FAILURE DUE TO THE POOR QUALITY. HOWEVER, THIS IS THE ONLY ONE THAT ADVERSELY AFFECTS SAFETY. I CAN BE REACHED BY CELL PHONE AS WELL AS THE NUMBER ALREADY PROVIDED. THE CELL PHONE IS (225)907-5911. ONE OTHER COMPLAINT IS THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS. THEY FAILED INTERMITTENTLY AFTER THE SECOND YEAR. EVENTUALLY, I REPLACED THE MOTOR WITH ONE FROM A PARTS STORE AT MY EXPENSE AND CURED THE PROBLEM. HAVE THERE BEEN OTHER COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS?*AK

Negative 1991 Chevrolet Camaro car reviews

  1. Tatum Bogisich 2025-01-05

Although I'm disappointed with the wimpy 305, I do appreciate the 28mpg on the highway, and it gives minimal problems for having 285k miles, and it hasn't broken down yet. I've been trying to blow the motor for the last 100k miles but I don't think it can run hard enough to hurt itself (saving up for an LS1)

  2. Alf Johnston 2025-01-01

The 90's style Camaros are really cool, especially the convertibles. With a V8 engine rumbling, it makes you feel like royalty. They are definitely a blast to drive. However, it's important to note that looks can be deceiving. The RS Camaros may not be true sports cars, as they only have 170 HP and are fairly slow. They may not be the most practical cars either, with poor gas mileage (around 20 mpg) and not the best handling in rain/snow, which can make them dangerous to drive even for experienced drivers. Additionally, repair costs for the older models can be quite high and frequent. For example, a new convertible top can cost close to $1000 and needs to be replaced about every 5 years.

  3. Gardner Lockman 2024-08-29

    It's such a cool car!

Positive 1991 Chevrolet Camaro car reviews

  1. Jedidiah Jacobson 2024-11-28

Your car sounds amazing! It's impressive that it has lasted so long with only one repair needed. The transmission overhaul must have really made a difference, especially with the added horsepower. Your Z28 with the 5.7L vette engine sounds like a beast on the road. I can understand why you wouldn't want to trade it for anything else!

  2. Ricardo Hagenes 2024-11-17

Hey there! Just wanted to share my experience with my Camaro. It's a V6 and despite its age, I've only had minor problems with it. While it may not have the power I was hoping for, it's still pretty quick! The interior is also really nice and comfortable. Overall, I would definitely recommend this car to any prospective buyers out there.

  3. Claud McClure 2024-10-12

Your 1991 RS with the 305 V-8 sounds like a great find! It's clear that you take good care of it, having only driven it 70000 miles and never in the winter. I'm glad to hear that you really enjoy driving it, and it's great that you get a lot of power and performance out of it. While the gas mileage may not be the best, it's good to know that the quality of the ride is very nice, even though it sits low to the ground. I understand that the ride height can be a bit of a challenge, but it sounds like careful driving helps to solve that. It's good to know that the t-tops only leak a little, which is to be expected. Overall, it sounds like you have a fantastic ride that's well worth the investment!

I purchased the car with 104,000 miles on it, but unfortunately, it had not been taken care of and had sat for two years straight at one point. Despite this, it ran great and shifted strong, proving to be a reliable vehicle. I only had to make a few repairs to it, one of which was fixing the valve stem seals, a common issue with these cars. This repair only cost me $170 and solved the problem of a puff of smoke when first starting the car. Even with my hard driving, the car remained extremely strong. However, it later developed a major oil leak and I ultimately sold it at 115,000 miles, but it still ran great.

I recently purchased a 91 Covertible Camaro with the 305 V-8, and I have to say, it's an absolute blast to drive! The motor is strong, and the car handles like a dream. The convertible top is a must-have, and I can't imagine ever parting with this car. If you're in the market for a fun ride, I highly recommend getting your hands on one of these Camaros before they become a thing of the past!
