Common Nissan Xterra problems

Based on complaints from Nissan Xterra owners, several common problems have been reported with these vehicles:

  • Defective Fuel Level Sensor: Many Xterra owners have experienced inaccurate fuel gauge readings due to faulty fuel level sensors. This can lead to engine stalling and poses a risk of accidents. The problem is common in Xterras produced between 2001 and 2011, with specific recalls issued for 2006-2008 models.
  • Transmission Failure: Transmission failure is a significant concern, especially in the 2005 model year. This issue is often linked to radiator leaks, where coolant mixes with transmission fluid, causing corrosion and overheating. Replacing or rebuilding the transmission is complex and costly, emphasizing the importance of monitoring radiator leaks to prevent this problem.
  • Timing Chain Issues: Another common problem reported by Xterra owners is related to the timing chain. Defective timing chains can lead to a high-pitched whine from the engine, indicating a problem with the timing chain tensioner guide wear. This issue was particularly notable in earlier model years and required replacement of the tensioner guides and chain.
  • Fuel Injector Failure: Some Xterra models have experienced issues with bad fuel injectors, leading to symptoms like engine misfires, loss of power, hesitation when accelerating, and excessive vibrations. A failed fuel injector can trigger the check engine light and necessitate repairs to address these performance issues.

These common problems highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any symptoms to prevent more severe issues with Nissan Xterra vehicles.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-01-25
  • VIN: 5N1AN0NW9CC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: 1) Rubber stopper under clutch pedal has failed multiple times, preventing vehicle from starting in various locations, usually parking lots and mostly after dark which presents potential safety concerns. This is a rubber part that allows vehicle to start only when clutch is depressed. I request that several/multiple of these be provided at no cost to keep in glove compartment since the poor quality of part manufacturing will most definitely cause future failure of each in the future. In addition, an explanation and instructions for removing broken part and replacing with new part is difficult for one person since you have to crawl up under the dashboard, locate the part, remove the broken part and correctly replace with a new part. I have purchased 7 pieces which have all broken and been charged approximately $7 each. The first time was the date of purchase and there have been more than 5 additional incidents since. Rubber stopper 46512-9bp1c purchased 9 between 10/14/12 and 4/6/22. Photos of those purchased just in the last couple of years

Nissan Xterra 2012
  • Date Of Incident: 2016-04-04

  • VIN: 5N1AN0NW9CC
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Extreme smell of gas after filling gas tank while out of town. Odor was so strong it required all windows to be down to drive without feeling affected by fumes and I was terrified that someone would fluck a cigarette out of a car somewhere, especially at a stop light, and cause an explosion. Once the gas tank was only half full or less, the odor diminished. Dealership found that this issue had been reported on other vehicles but did not qualify as a recall. Dealership found faulty gasket INSIDE gas tank and required the entire tank be replaced at a cost to me of more than $2000. I can get receipts from Charlottesville Nissan Dealership.

Latest negative Nissan Xterra car reviews

  1. Stevie Mraz 2025-05-28

    Vehicle year: 2000

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with this truck. While it looks really cool and can handle off-road terrain, I found that it didn't quite have the power I was hoping for when I stepped on the gas. Just wanted to give you a heads up!

  2. Laverna Harber 2025-05-26

    Vehicle year: 2015

I bought this truck because I was looking for an SUV with 4WD or AWD that also had a manual transmission. I've only had it for 4 months, so I haven't had a chance to really test its off-road capabilities yet. It's comfortable enough, but the interior looks pretty cheap. However, the Xterra Pro-4X now comes with the new Nissan Connect Infotainment system for 2014, which works flawlessly. The Rockford-Fosgate stereo is a little too bassy, but overall it sounds very good. Fuel economy is disappointing, but for the price and the options, this truck is hard to beat. Overall, I really enjoy driving it, and I feel like I could take it anywhere.

  3. Robb Parker 2025-05-25

    Vehicle year: 2006

Despite having only 5 years of use, my 2006 Nissan Xterra has unfortunately fallen victim to radiator/transmission problems. During an oil change at my dealer, I reported a symptom of my vehicle feeling like it was driving over a rumble strip at certain speeds and experiencing a loss of acceleration at other times. Although Nissan has extended the warranty for this known issue, my Xterra was just outside of the warranty period at 112K miles. However, I confidently expressed my disappointment to the dealer and they were able to provide me with a repair quote of around $6000. While this may seem like a significant amount, I am reassured by the fact that my truck is practically brand new and I am confident that this repair will restore it to its optimal condition.

  4. Johnson Pouros 2025-05-22

    Vehicle year: 2004

I bought my Xterra after carefully researching the vehicle and scrutinizing its condition. I mostly agree with the reviews. The ride is a bit stiff, which is good for a true SUV. The steering can be a bit squirrely, especially at lower speeds, but it's fine once you adjust to it. One point I wholly agree with is the underpowered engine. A truck like this should have a 4.0 as base, not an upgrade. The interior is comfortable, if a little sparse, save for the power windows and locks. I'd also like more up-front storage. Despite its few shortcomings, it's a great truck. I really, really like it. After all, who doesn't love a truck? :)

  5. Christ Schmidt 2025-05-21

    Vehicle year: 2005

Hey there! I wanted to let you know that some 2005 Nissan Xterras and Pathfinders have been experiencing radiator failures that can cause engine coolant (antifreeze) to leak into the transmission, ultimately damaging it. Unfortunately, this can be a costly repair, with a total cost of over $5,000. While Nissan has not yet issued a service bulletin on this issue, I wanted to make sure you were aware of it. I hope this information helps!

Latest positive Nissan Xterra car reviews

  1. Heber Cormier 2025-05-28

    Vehicle year: 2004

Hi there! Congrats on considering the Xterra! I've actually owned two Xterras myself, and I have to say, they're fantastic cars. I've been really happy with my 2003 and 2004 models, and I'm sure you'll love yours too. The 2005 model has some major changes to the exterior, but I'm sure it's just as great as the previous models. Don't let the marketing fool you - this SUV is perfect for anyone, regardless of age. It's just as stylish as a Toyota, but more reliable than a Chevy, and it's even $5000 less than either one! If you're interested, I'd recommend shopping at the end of the month and taking advantage of the factory incentives. You could bring home a 4X4 for around $21000, just like I did. Let me know if you have any questions!

  2. Cordell Gusikowski 2025-05-27

    Vehicle year: 2008

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my new Xterra. After doing some research, I decided that this was the SUV for me and I couldn't be happier with my decision. I love the power it has and it's been handling really well in the snow and ice. I'm also really impressed with the build quality so far. Although I've only had the car for about 6 weeks, I'm extremely impressed with it!

  3. Gerald Dooley 2025-05-25

    Vehicle year: 2004

I purchased this SUV in December of 2009 because of its looks and the great price that the dealership was asking for it. Additionally, it has a full warranty. The Xterra has 70,000 miles on it and still drives like a new car. I get great mileage, averaging about 24 to 25 mpg. I also love its rugged looks and receive many compliments when driving around in this vehicle. I have spoken with many other Xterra owners about their cars, and everyone I have spoken with loves this vehicle and would buy it again. Well done, Nissan! The only thing I hope for is that the car will last me for many years to come.

  4. Henderson Kuhic 2025-05-23

    Vehicle year: 2008

Great off road! Just be aware that the exhaust muffler may leak from the top rear seam, which can damage the wiring harness and other components. It's a good idea to check the u-joints frequently and keep up with regular maintenance to ensure everything runs smoothly.

  5. Damon Champlin 2025-05-23

    Vehicle year: 2001

I purchased my 2001 Xterra with 73k on the odometer after searching for a foreign 4x4 SUV. It was the most affordable option with the best features. Currently, my Xterra has 155k miles and I have only encountered minor issues, such as a slow leak on a radiator hose which was an easy fix that only took an hour and cost $10. Unfortunately, my A/C stopped working just before summer and we have had several days over 100 degrees which has been quite uncomfortable. Despite the high gas prices, I have considered selling it, but then I remember all the amazing trips I have taken to the beach, camping, and even driving through a foot of snow. This vehicle is a beast that will get you anywhere you need to go. I absolutely love it and have no intention of parting with it.
