Common Nissan Xterra problems
Based on complaints from Nissan Xterra owners, several common problems have been reported with these vehicles:
- Defective Fuel Level Sensor: Many Xterra owners have experienced inaccurate fuel gauge readings due to faulty fuel level sensors. This can lead to engine stalling and poses a risk of accidents. The problem is common in Xterras produced between 2001 and 2011, with specific recalls issued for 2006-2008 models.
- Transmission Failure: Transmission failure is a significant concern, especially in the 2005 model year. This issue is often linked to radiator leaks, where coolant mixes with transmission fluid, causing corrosion and overheating. Replacing or rebuilding the transmission is complex and costly, emphasizing the importance of monitoring radiator leaks to prevent this problem.
- Timing Chain Issues: Another common problem reported by Xterra owners is related to the timing chain. Defective timing chains can lead to a high-pitched whine from the engine, indicating a problem with the timing chain tensioner guide wear. This issue was particularly notable in earlier model years and required replacement of the tensioner guides and chain.
- Fuel Injector Failure: Some Xterra models have experienced issues with bad fuel injectors, leading to symptoms like engine misfires, loss of power, hesitation when accelerating, and excessive vibrations. A failed fuel injector can trigger the check engine light and necessitate repairs to address these performance issues.
These common problems highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any symptoms to prevent more severe issues with Nissan Xterra vehicles.

- Summary: 1) Rubber stopper under clutch pedal has failed multiple times, preventing vehicle from starting in various locations, usually parking lots and mostly after dark which presents potential safety concerns. This is a rubber part that allows vehicle to start only when clutch is depressed. I request that several/multiple of these be provided at no cost to keep in glove compartment since the poor quality of part manufacturing will most definitely cause future failure of each in the future. In addition, an explanation and instructions for removing broken part and replacing with new part is difficult for one person since you have to crawl up under the dashboard, locate the part, remove the broken part and correctly replace with a new part. I have purchased 7 pieces which have all broken and been charged approximately $7 each. The first time was the date of purchase and there have been more than 5 additional incidents since. Rubber stopper 46512-9bp1c purchased 9 between 10/14/12 and 4/6/22. Photos of those purchased just in the last couple of years

- VIN: 5N1AN0NW9CC
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Extreme smell of gas after filling gas tank while out of town. Odor was so strong it required all windows to be down to drive without feeling affected by fumes and I was terrified that someone would fluck a cigarette out of a car somewhere, especially at a stop light, and cause an explosion. Once the gas tank was only half full or less, the odor diminished. Dealership found that this issue had been reported on other vehicles but did not qualify as a recall. Dealership found faulty gasket INSIDE gas tank and required the entire tank be replaced at a cost to me of more than $2000. I can get receipts from Charlottesville Nissan Dealership.

I've been the proud owner of my Xterra for almost a decade now. It's been a safe, reliable and solid vehicle throughout the years, but as with any car, it requires regular maintenance and part replacements due to age and wear and tear. I make sure to follow the maintenance schedule and take it to the Nissan dealership for top-of-the-line care. Even after driving through heavy rains and long distances, the Xterra handles like a champ and gives me a sense of safety and security. I've replaced the sound system and tires, and I'm still riding on Michelin tires. I hope Nissan will start manufacturing the Xterra again soon. Overall, I cannot say enough positive things about my ownership experience. I plan to keep the Xterra for the long haul, and as long as I stay on top of the maintenance and replace parts as needed, it will continue to be a solid and reliable vehicle. The Arizona heat can be tough on cars, but with proper care, the Xterra has proven to be a great investment.

Great truck to drive on and off road. It's very easy to maintain and works very well off road. You'll never be stuck or left stranded. It's a great vehicle in the snow, mud, rain, sand, and anything else you can throw at it.

Great news for the SUV enthusiast! Nissan has really done the trick with the Xterra. It's nimble on the road, capable off-road, and easy on the wallet, with outstanding performance. I'd highly recommend taking a test drive if you're in the market for a slightly larger vehicle. The fuel economy is exceptional for this type of vehicle and its capabilities.

Hey there! I'm seventeen and I just got a beautiful car. All compliments to Nissan for this because all I do is get compliments. It's so much fun to drive, with nice handling and great CD quality. It's awesome! While it's not a race car or a monster truck, I don't know why some people think it should be faster and more powerful.

I was gifted a 2013 Nissan Xterra 'Off Road' 4WD on my birthday, and it has been the best vehicle I have ever owned! Although living in California means that I hardly need the 4WD for snow, I do have rental property in South Lake Tahoe which gets a lot of snow. Driving this vehicle on paved roads, dirt roads, or snow was truly enjoyable. It never let me down when I was on the road, and other than the normal maintenance, I never had to spend extra money getting something fixed! A few years ago, I moved to Oregon, Off Grid!! My Xterra was wonderful! However, one day on my way into town on a dirt road, I had a rear tire blowout, and I rolled my poor Xterra four times! Thankfully, I had my seatbelt on as usual, and I came out of that with not even a scratch, but all of the side airbags deployed, both passenger and driver side! I miss my Xterra greatly! I bought a new 2016 Jeep Renegade, but I have been so disappointed in it that I am looking for a used Xterra!!

My SE S/C 4WD 2002 was a great car, with only a few issues in the last couple of years. Despite these issues, it remained a problem-free vehicle for the most part. It's worth noting that it was a one owner vehicle, and the problems only started to accelerate after 100K miles.

You made a great choice purchasing this car! It has been a reliable vehicle for you, running well even after accumulating 135,000 miles. As with any car with this mileage, there have been some occasional issues such as the fuel pump, fuel pump wiring harness, brake work, and shocks, but these are to be expected. Although it may feel a bit underpowered with a family of four, it still maintains freeway speeds without any problems. Overall, it sounds like you have loved this car so far!

Hello! I noticed that you have a 2005 X-Terra, which is a great car! I understand that you have had some issues with the interior seats and the paint on the roof. It can be frustrating when things don't work as they should. Have you tried reaching out to the dealer or factory for assistance? I hope that you are still able to enjoy driving your truck despite these issues. Thank you for sharing your experience with me!

Vehicle year: 2005
At 64000 miles, I purchased this vehicle and enjoyed driving it without any issues. However, at 121,000 miles, I experienced a transmission failure which I later discovered was due to a NISSAN DEFECT in the radiator. Despite Nissan's reluctance to address the issue, I spent $3000+ over 8 months trying to fix it. Unfortunately, the repairs were unsuccessful and I had to purchase another vehicle to drive while it was down. Ultimately, I was forced to trade the XTerra with $3500 of negative equity, resulting in a total loss of nearly $7000. This experience has left me disappointed with Nissan and I will not be purchasing from them again.

I'm happy to hear that Nissan has moved on from using the V6 engine in their newer models since it seems to have caused some issues for me and others. My engine troubles began at around 65 to 70k miles, and I had to replace the Knock sensor which was a costly repair. I found a non-dealer to do the repair for a more reasonable price. Unfortunately, the timing belt doesn't seem to last as long as advertised, and it's now recommended to replace it every 60k miles, which can be quite expensive. On the bright side, my exhaust manifolds have held up well, despite my dealer suggesting they needed to be replaced. One thing to note is that Nissan uses a
