Common Nissan Xterra problems

Based on complaints from Nissan Xterra owners, several common problems have been reported with these vehicles:

  • Defective Fuel Level Sensor: Many Xterra owners have experienced inaccurate fuel gauge readings due to faulty fuel level sensors. This can lead to engine stalling and poses a risk of accidents. The problem is common in Xterras produced between 2001 and 2011, with specific recalls issued for 2006-2008 models.
  • Transmission Failure: Transmission failure is a significant concern, especially in the 2005 model year. This issue is often linked to radiator leaks, where coolant mixes with transmission fluid, causing corrosion and overheating. Replacing or rebuilding the transmission is complex and costly, emphasizing the importance of monitoring radiator leaks to prevent this problem.
  • Timing Chain Issues: Another common problem reported by Xterra owners is related to the timing chain. Defective timing chains can lead to a high-pitched whine from the engine, indicating a problem with the timing chain tensioner guide wear. This issue was particularly notable in earlier model years and required replacement of the tensioner guides and chain.
  • Fuel Injector Failure: Some Xterra models have experienced issues with bad fuel injectors, leading to symptoms like engine misfires, loss of power, hesitation when accelerating, and excessive vibrations. A failed fuel injector can trigger the check engine light and necessitate repairs to address these performance issues.

These common problems highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any symptoms to prevent more severe issues with Nissan Xterra vehicles.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-01-25
  • VIN: 5N1AN0NW9CC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: 1) Rubber stopper under clutch pedal has failed multiple times, preventing vehicle from starting in various locations, usually parking lots and mostly after dark which presents potential safety concerns. This is a rubber part that allows vehicle to start only when clutch is depressed. I request that several/multiple of these be provided at no cost to keep in glove compartment since the poor quality of part manufacturing will most definitely cause future failure of each in the future. In addition, an explanation and instructions for removing broken part and replacing with new part is difficult for one person since you have to crawl up under the dashboard, locate the part, remove the broken part and correctly replace with a new part. I have purchased 7 pieces which have all broken and been charged approximately $7 each. The first time was the date of purchase and there have been more than 5 additional incidents since. Rubber stopper 46512-9bp1c purchased 9 between 10/14/12 and 4/6/22. Photos of those purchased just in the last couple of years

Nissan Xterra 2012
  • Date Of Incident: 2016-04-04
  • Date Complaint: 2024-01-25
  • VIN: 5N1AN0NW9CC
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Extreme smell of gas after filling gas tank while out of town. Odor was so strong it required all windows to be down to drive without feeling affected by fumes and I was terrified that someone would fluck a cigarette out of a car somewhere, especially at a stop light, and cause an explosion. Once the gas tank was only half full or less, the odor diminished. Dealership found that this issue had been reported on other vehicles but did not qualify as a recall. Dealership found faulty gasket INSIDE gas tank and required the entire tank be replaced at a cost to me of more than $2000. I can get receipts from Charlottesville Nissan Dealership.

Latest negative Nissan Xterra car reviews

  1. Sedrick Ratke 2025-05-09

    Vehicle year: 2009

Hey there! Congrats on your second Xterra! I had an '05 off-road 6-speed too, and I totally agree that they're hard to come by. The new one sounds awesome! Xterras really are the best all-around choice for a 4x4 SUV that can handle some serious off-roading. I do wish it had a bit more ground clearance and lower gears, but on the road, it's definitely the SUV for the money if you're into power. :)

  2. Silas Cummerata 2025-05-05

    Vehicle year: 2005

It's great to hear that you've had a positive experience with your 2005 Xterra, even with over 140,000 miles on it! It's unfortunate to hear that you've been experiencing some issues with the O2 sensors and catalytic converter, but it's good that you're aware of the potential transmission and radiator issues that can occur with this model. It's always helpful to be informed about these things. It's possible that the cracked radiator and transmission issue could be related to the fender bender, but it's hard to say for sure. It's impressive that your Xterra has made it this far, and I hope that you're able to get everything fixed up soon!

  3. Amparo Block 2025-04-23

    Vehicle year: 2001

Wow, the gas mileage is horrible. First fill up was 16 mpg and second was 14 mpg. I could get the same in a full size truck. Other than that the suv rides well and for my purposes has plenty of interior room. Driven off road only once so far, but will put it to the test when the snow comes. Does well off road. Very quiet interior, but yes there is some squeaks now and then from the cheap plastic interior. Has decent power to get up the hills, but could use more. Clock could be brighter for use in the day. Over all a great suv, but you would expect it would get better mpg with a 3.3 L motor. Thought it should get around 18-21 mpg hyw. If you can afford the gas buy one.

  4. Branson McKenzie 2025-04-14

    Vehicle year: 2002

My SE S/C 4WD 2002 was a great car, with only a few issues in the last couple of years. Despite these issues, it remained a problem-free vehicle for the most part. It's worth noting that it was a one owner vehicle, and the problems only started to accelerate after 100K miles.

  5. Carmel Cole 2025-04-11

    Vehicle year: 2000

You made a great choice purchasing this car! It has been a reliable vehicle for you, running well even after accumulating 135,000 miles. As with any car with this mileage, there have been some occasional issues such as the fuel pump, fuel pump wiring harness, brake work, and shocks, but these are to be expected. Although it may feel a bit underpowered with a family of four, it still maintains freeway speeds without any problems. Overall, it sounds like you have loved this car so far!

    Vehicle year: 2006

I owned a 2003 Xterra and it was okay. However, when I traded it in for the 06, I was blown away by the difference. I absolutely love its off-road capability. Not only is this SUV very capable on the road, but the ride is also much smoother than the older body style. I highly recommend this vehicle to anyone!

  2. Mekhi Waelchi 2025-05-09

    Vehicle year: 2009

Excellent vehicle quality. Very fun to drive. High visibility and very stylish. I used to drive a Jetta which is very compact. Before that, I had a Ford Excursion, which was very comfortable but had terrible gas mileage. I'm really happy with this vehicle so far.

  3. Judson Fisher 2025-05-07

    Vehicle year: 2009

We have been absolutely thrilled with our Xterra since purchasing it used with 56,000 miles. It has been a reliable and high-performing vehicle, and we are happy to report that it is now approaching 90,000 miles with no issues. The engine provides plenty of power, and we have found that it handles well in the snow when in 4WD. While we have not yet had the opportunity to tow anything with it, we know that it is capable of towing up to 5,500 pounds. We did have an issue with coolant leaking into the transmission prior to purchasing the Xterra, but the previous owner had the radiator, transaxle, and differential all replaced, so it has not been a problem for us. We have had a few minor electrical issues, such as a bad airbag sensor and a malfunctioning lock on the hatch, but overall we have been very satisfied with the vehicle. The interior quality is not the best, as the plastics scratch easily, but this has not been a major concern for our family. With proper maintenance, we believe that the Xterra can easily last 200,000 miles or more. UPDATE 12/31/19: We continue to be impressed with the Xterra's performance. We have had no problems with it since our last review, and we recently replaced the tires with a set of Nokian WRG3 tires, which have greatly improved its performance in snowy conditions. We are getting ready to change the spark plugs and serpentine belt, but overall the cost of maintenance has been very reasonable. We highly recommend the Xterra to anyone in the market for a reliable and capable SUV.

  4. Clement Schaden 2025-05-03

    Vehicle year: 2013

The Xterra PRO-4X is just the right size for a family of four, although it may be a bit cramped for long-legged teenagers in the back seats. It's powerful enough to easily tow my 2,000 lb boat at 75mph or climb Colorado mountain passes while fully loaded. I bought it because I wanted a midsized SUV with genuine offroad capability and decent performance on paved roads. It has everything you need and nothing you don't, just like the ads used to say.

  5. Caden Stiedemann 2025-05-02

    Vehicle year: 2011

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with the Xterra. I was looking for a multipurpose vehicle that could also pull a boat and I considered several options such as the CRV, Ford Escape, Rav4, and 4Runner. However, I found that the first three couldn't handle the job of pulling a boat and were more like cars dressed as SUVs. The 4Runner was nice, but it was too big for city driving and also quite expensive. That's when I discovered the Xterra and it has been perfect for my needs! I've taken it on and off-road many times and it handles great. It definitely has more of a truck ride, but on any half-decent road, it feels just like any other modern vehicle. Thanks for listening to my experience!
