1995 Ford Probe problems
The Ford Probe is a liftback coupé produced by Ford, introduced in 1988 and produced until 1997. The Probe was the result of Ford's collaboration with its longtime Japanese partner Mazda, and both generations of Probe were derived from the front-wheel drive Mazda G platform that underpinned the Mazda Capella.
The Probe succeeded the Ford EXP, and the instrument cluster of the first-generation Probe and pop-up headlight mechanisms were borrowed from the FC Series RX-7.
Based on the Mazda MX-6 as a sport compact coupe, the Probe was intended to fill the market niche formerly occupied by the Capri in Europe, and it was originally intended to be the fourth generation Ford Mustang in the North American market as a direct competitor with the Acura Integra, Isuzu Piazza, Nissan 200SX, and the Toyota Celica. During that time, Ford's marketing team had deemed that a front-wheel drive platform (borrowed Mazda GD and GE platforms) would have lower costs for production, and also because the platform had been gaining popularity with consumers.
Mustang fans objected to the front-wheel drive configuration, Japanese engineering, and lack of a V8, so Ford began work on a new design for the Mustang instead. On March 17, 1997, Ford announced the discontinuation of the Probe.

- VIN: 1ZVLT20A5S5
- Components: STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES, AIR,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,POWER TRAIN,STRUCTURE
- Summary: TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: MY 1995 FORD PROBE HAS HAD A NUMBER OF PROBLEMS INCLUDING ONE OF THE MOST RECENT - HAVING TO REBUILD THE TRANSMISSION'S HAVE NOW OWNED THE CAR FOR 20,000 MILES OR 3 1/2 YEARS AND HAVE SPENT OVER FOUR AND A HALF THOUSAND DOLLARS ON "PRE-MATURE" PROBLEMS. THE AMOUNT DOES NOT INCLUDE GENERAL SERVICES. THE CAR HAS NOW REACHED 87,000 MILES. ONE DOES NOT EXPECT A CAR WITH SO LITTLE MILEAGE TO HAVE SO MANY PROBLEMS. IF I WAS ABLE TO AFFORD A NEW CAR I WOULD SEND MY FORD PROBE TO THE SCRAP YARD, I WOULD NOT WANT A STRANGER TO SUFFER CAR PROBLEMS AS I HAVE. BUT BEING A FULL TIME STUDENT WHO PAYS HER OWN WAY I CAN LITTLE AFFORD SUCH COSTS AS NEW TRANSMISSIONS A NEW CAR. I WAS NOT SURPRISED TO FIND IN MY RESEARCH ON-LINE THAT MANY PROBE OWNERS ARE NOT HAPPY WITH THEIR CARS. CONVERSATIONS WITH MECHANICS; WHICH HAVE BEEN MANY, HAVE FOLLOWED THE SAME PATTERN, "ITS A FORD WITH MAZDA PARTS,GET RID OF IT, EVERYBODY HAS PROBLEMS WITH FORD CARS, THEIR TERRIBLE CARS." AFTER MANY EXPERT OPINIONS MY QUESTION TO YOU IS," WHY?" I LOOK AFTER MY CAR,(I BOUGHT MY CAR FROM A DEALER WHO ACQUIRED THE CAR FROM MY FRIEND) I NOW KNOW SO MUCH ABOUT CARS! WHY ARE SUCH PROBLEMATIC CARS ALLOWED TO BE SOLD? WHY ARE CARS WITH SO LITTLE MILEAGE CAUSING SO MUCH HAVIC IN PEOPLES LIVES? THIS IS A QUESTION THAT MUST BE INVESTIGATED AND CORPORATIONS MUST BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR SO MUCH GRIEVE. IT IS NOT FAIR ON THE CONSUMER AND AS A GOVERNMENT BODY I IMPLORE THAT YOU PLEASE TAKE A SERIOUS AND COMPASSIONATE NOTE OF MY COMPLAINT AND COMPLAINT FROM OTHER OWNERS. IT IS NOT FAIR. IT IS NOT FAIR THAT PEOPLE HAVE NO VOICE AND NO ONE CARES TO LISTEN. MASS RE- OCCURRENCE OF CAR PROBLEMS IS AN ISSUE THAT MUST BE LOOKED INTO. MY WINDOWS RATTLE TOO - A NOISY PROBE GIFT THAT IRRITATES PROBE OWNERS. I WOULD GREET A RESPONSE HAPPILY IN THE MIST OF THE REALM OF CAR DARKNESS, FAITHFULLY, SATCHYA FARIAS. *CB

I'm 17 and I bought this car for myself as a Christmas present since my older Eclipse Turbo was biting the dust. This is truly one of the best bargain sports cars out there. It's got plenty of torque to get it off the line, though 50bhp wouldn't hurt. So far, it's been reliable (knock on wood). The engine sounds great, but I couldn't resist adding a Flowmaster exhaust. Overall, it's a great car!

My 1995 Ford Probe SE has been both a blessing and a curse. I've had the car for nearly 8 years now and put well over 100,000 miles on it. Although I've had some issues with the car, such as the AC compressor shredding belts every other month, going through three transmissions, and leaking oil like it's on a mission, I still find it to be a reliable car that gets me from Point A to Point B (as long as they aren't too far apart and I have quarts of oil in tow). It's also a fun car to drive, especially when taking turns fast. Overall, I have a soft spot for my Ford Probe SE and the memories we've made together.

I have owned my Probe since I bought it new in 1995, and it has now clocked 91,000 miles. Although I have had some issues with the idling, I had the air intake manifold gasket replaced and it has been running smoothly ever since. Additionally, I have only needed to replace the brakes and tires, as well as perform routine maintenance.

Big Probe Fan! Absolutely love my car!

Car handles great, looks good, and has a lot of power. Although it can be expensive to repair, it is definitely worth the investment.

All in all, it sounds like driving this car would be a lot of fun! However, it's worth noting that Mazda/Ford may not have built these cars to last very long. While they might be a good option for college students, I wouldn't necessarily recommend them to everyone, especially since they're no longer in production and parts can be hard to find.

I really enjoyed driving my Ford Probe. It had responsive handling and decent acceleration for a standard 2L 4cyl, making it a fairly comfortable ride. However, I did experience some issues with the car breaking down numerous times. Unfortunately, I had to put thousands of dollars into repairs in only one year, including replacing tie rods, sway bars, clutch slave and master cylinders, both CV axles, muffler, catalytic converter, and more. Eventually, I decided to part ways with the car when I noticed foam and rust on the oil dip stick. I sold it off at 130,000 miles for a couple hundred dollars.

From the moment you drive off the lot, the car decreases in value. True. However, this particular car has not held up well over time. Since driving onto the highway, the transmission has been clunking and parts have been falling out and breaking. Additionally, the car has a distinct odor of dead fish in late August. It also has a boxy 80's appearance. For these reasons, I would advise against purchasing a Probe, regardless of your budget.
Koby Bruen 2024-08-12
I bought my Probe Gt with an automatic transmission. Although I had to replace the transmission 7 times in just 5 months, I still found it to be a fun car to drive. It was fast and had great handling, making it worth the money.

Hi there! I've had this 1995 Ford Probe GT for a month or two now and it's been pretty good so far. The manual transmission can be a bit jerky at times, especially when it's really cold, but overall it handles great for a car with 116,000 miles on it. I can even get up to 63 mph in 2nd gear at about 7,500 rpm, which is pretty impressive. Thanks for letting me share!
