Denali is a nameplate used by GMC for its highest trim level on its vehicles. Vehicles with the Denali trim option carry list prices up to 47% higher than base models. Prices range from $38,600 for GMC Terrain to $109,410 for a top-of-the-line Yukon XL Denali (as of 2023).

The Denali nameplate is often used as an insignia or status symbol, and in particular is popular as a less costly alternative to the Cadillac marque. The Yukon Denali line typically represents 40% of Yukon sales in both units and dollars. In 2013 it sold more than 75,558 units of the Denali brand, which accounted for 20% of GMC's sales, making it one of GM's most successful sub-brands.

History

The Denali nameplate started as the top-of-the-line version of the GMC Yukon for the 1999 model year. It was also GM's first attempt to go after sales from the new-for-1998 Lincoln Navigator. At the time of its introduction. General Motors decided to give Cadillac its own luxury SUV so the Denali's exterior was shared with the 1999 Cadillac Escalade, with only the front fascia and lower side body panels differing from the standard Yukon. Although the Yukon was redesigned alongside the Chevrolet Suburban and Chevrolet Tahoe in 2000, the Yukon Denali, Escalade, and Tahoe Limited/Z71 retained their GMT400 base design.

The "Denali" brand was derived from the native Alaskan Athabaskans / Koyukon people's name for the tallest mountain in North America. It is also the name of the Denali National Park and Preserve that surrounds the mountain, as well as Denali State Park.

Common 1999 Gmc Yukon denali problems

The 1999 GMC Yukon Denali, like any vehicle, can have its share of common problems. Here are some of the issues that owners have reported:

  • Transmission Troubles: Problems involving the GMC Yukon transmission are not as common as the previous categories. However, they can hamper the SUV’s road performance and increase the risk of a car accident by making it harder or even impossible to switch gears. Several units from the 1999 model year received complaints about its transmission, with issues like hesitation, vibration, and jerking.
  • Interior Accessories and Parts: Many Yukon owners have brought up many issues regarding their SUV’s accessories and interior parts. The 1999 GMC Yukon dashboard covers numerous cables, wires, and other parts. When one of these parts gets loose, it may vibrate as the car is running and make clicking or rattling noises. The electronic accessories in 1999 Yukons may also act up. Many owners have expressed frustration with the model’s climate control panel, console phone, front camera, and USB charging ports refusing to work.
  • AC Not Working Properly: The 1999 Yukon is prone to A/C failure. However, the type of failure can impact the cost of the repair, which is worth noting.
  • Upper Dash Cracking: The upper dash may crack, which is a common issue in the 1999 GMC Yukon. This isn't a safety issue, but it can drive down the SUV’s resale value.
  • Anti-Theft System Failure: Some owners have reported a "no start" issue due to anti-theft system failure.
  • Power Door Lock Actuators Failure: Power door lock actuators may fail, causing inconvenience to the vehicle's occupants.

It's important to note that not all 1999 GMC Yukon Denali vehicles will experience these problems. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help prevent or mitigate these issues.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-09-18
  • VIN: 1GKEK13R1XJ
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: VEHICLE HAS ONLY 21,650 M ON IT, USED MOSTLY ON WEEKENDS AND IN THE SNOW IN WINTER. IT WAS DOING FINE UNTIL 9/18/16 WHEN SUDDENLY I NOTICED MY BRAKE WAS NOT RESPONDING AS USUAL. I HAD TO PUSH THE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR REPEATEDLY TO STOP, BARELY MISSED HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I WAS ON ONE OF MY CITY STREETS GETTING BACK HOME AFTER GROCERY SHOPPING. DROVE HOME SLOWLY AND VERY CAREFULLY. HAD IT TOWED TO A NEARBY GM DEALER. HE SAYS MOST OF THE BRAKE LINES AND SOME HOSES HAVE RUSTED, NEED TO BE REPLACED. THAT WOULD BE 15-16 HOURS LABOR AND WILL COST ME $ 2000.00. IT SNOWS HERE QUITE A BIT AND AFTER THE SEASON, I ALWAYS WASH MY VEHICLES WITH EMPHASIS ON THE UNDERSIDE TO REMOVE THE SALT AND CHEMICALS. BESIDES, ON THIS VEHICLE I HAD TO REPAINT THE HOOD TWICE, ROOF ONCE AND REPLACE THE REAR BUMPER SO FAR- ALL DUE TO RUST. NOW MY FRONT BUMPER IS SHOWING SIGNS OF RUST. WHAT'S THE MATTER - WITH ALL THIS EXCESSIVE RUSTING ON THIS VEHICLE. I HAVE MY OTHER SUV PARKED RIGHT BESIDE THIS AT HOME AND USE IT IN THE WINTER TIME. IT IS MUCH OLDER THAN YUKON AND THERE IS NO RUST PROBLEM AT ALL WITH IT. LOOKS LIKE THERE IS SOME SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH THE METAL USED IN THIS VEHICLE OR LACK OF QUALITY CONTROL. GM DID A BAD JOB WITH THIS VEHICLE. THEY SAY THERE WAS NO RECALL ON THIS MODEL. WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF I CAN GET COMPENSATED BY GM FOR ALL THIS HARDSHIP. DO NOT KNOW WHAT ELSE IS IN STORE WITH THIS VEHICLE IN FUTURE. HAVE TO GET THE BRAKE JOB DONE RIGHT AWAY BUT VERY PRICEY FOR MY BUDGET. PLEASE CHECK INTO THIS PROBLEM AND LET ME KNOW HOW TO PROCEED. LOOKING FORWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU SOON. THANKS, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,EQUIPMENT PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-10-15
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: BRAKE ROTOR AND PAD KIT PURCHASED FROM ROCK AUTO WAS THE WRONG DIMENSION AND THEY REFUSED TO ACCEPT THE IMPROPER FIT, THE FOLLOWING RESPONSE FROM ROCK AUTO: :[XXX] I HAVE RECEIVED A REPLY FROM THE MANUFACTURER CONFIRMING THAT PART NUMBER KOE 1970, THE ROTORS YOU RECEIVED, ARE THE CORRECT ROTORS FOR A 1999 GMC YUKON 5.7L V8 WITH 4WD AND 6 LUG WHEELS. THE PART NUMBER FOR THESE ROTORS SHOULD BE AR8609XPR. IF THIS IS NOT THE NUMBER STAMPED ON THE ROTOR YOU RECEIVED, YOU MAY HAVE RECEIVED A MIS-BOXED PART. IF THAT IS THE CASE, PLEASE RESPOND WITH THE NUMBER THAT IS STAMPED ON THE ROTOR YOU RECEIVED. IF THIS NUMBER MATCHES THE ROTORS YOU RECEIVED, YOU CAN SIMPLY FOLLOW THE RETURN INSTRUCTIONS I HAVE EMAILED TO YOU. IN THIS CASE WE WOULD BE UNABLE TO REFUND YOU THE ORIGINAL SHIPPING, BUT WE WILL COVER THE RETURN SHIPPING IN THE FORM OF A SHIPPING LABEL. WHEN THE MANUFACTURER SAYS THAT THE FIT IS CORRECT AND THE CUSTOMER SAYS IT IS NOT, IT IS OUR POLICY TO SPLIT THE SHIPPING ON THE ORDER. I APOLOGIZE FOR THE INCONVENIENCE, AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION IN THIS MATTER. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS CONDITION WHERE THE AFTERMARKET "BROKERS" LIKE ROCK AUTO ARE SELLING PARTS THAT ARE THE WRONG SIZE AND THEN SUPPORTING THE MANUFACTURER (PROFITING). THE THICKNESS OF THE ROTOR PLATE PUSHED MY ROAD WHEEL OUT BEYOND FULL WHEEL LUG NUT ENGAGEMENT AND NO ENGAGEMENT OF THE ROAD WHEEL CENTER HOLE WITH THE BEARING HUB. THE ONLY CONTACT WAS THE LUG NUTS. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS CONDITION. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-07-26
  • VIN: 1GKEK13R0XJ
  • Components: STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: HAD TO STOP IN A HURRY ON THE FREEWAY AND WAS GOING ABOUT 60 MILES AN HOUR AND HIT THE BRAKES, I BELIEVE THE ABS LOCKED UP AND I FISHTAILED FROM THE LEFT TO THE RIGHT AND BACK TO THE LEFT AGAIN. ENGINE SHUTOFF AUTOMATICALLY AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THIS NEARLY CAUSED A MULTI CAR COLLISION WITH A POSSIBLE BRIDGE FLY AWAY AS WE WERE ON A BRIDGE AT THE TIME. LUCKILY THROUGH DEFENSIVE DRIVING WAS ABLE TO GAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND KEEP IT FROM HITTING ANYTHING OR ANYONE, HOWEVER NOW WHEN TURNING RIGHT OR LEFT THERE IS A SQUEAK AT EVERY ROTATION WHEN GOING SLOW. ALSO THE VEHICLE SLOWLY HESITATES COMING TO A STOP AND ABS WILL SOMETIMES START ENGAGING CAUSING NEAR COLLISIONS. *TR

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-12-16
  • VIN: 1GKEK13R8XJ
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: (REAR BRAKE LINE RUPTURE) MY WIFE WAS ON HER WAY TO WORK WHEN SHE APPLIED THE BRAKES THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. THE PEDAL BECAME REAL SOFT AS IF THE VEHICLE WASN'T GOING TO STOP. AFTER RETURNING HOME, UPON INVESTIGATION THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER WAS ALMOST EMPTY. I FOUND BRAKE FLUID COMING OUT OF A BADLY CORRODED BRAKE LINE JUST BEHIND THE FUEL TANK. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A VERY BAD SITUATION. WE ARE THE SECOND OWNERS ON THIS VEHICLE, PURCHASED IN 2001. WE HAVE ALWAYS KEPT IT MAINTAINED AND CLEAN, INCLUDING CAR WASHES AFTER SNOW STORMS TO REMOVE ROAD SALT AND SAND. THIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING ON AN 11 YEAR OLD VEHICLE, THANKFULLY THIS DIDN'T RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT. I HAVE ALSO NOTICED THE FUEL LINES HAVE CORROSION AT EVER MOUNTING LOCATION. SO, I GUESS THESE ARE GOING TO FAIL AS WELL SOME TIME IN THE FUTURE. *TR
