Common 2006 Nissan Xterra problems

The Nissan Xterra 2006 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One major issue is the transmission failure, which is often caused by coolant mixing with engine oil. This problem is common in this model and year, and it can occur as early as 59,980 miles. While the warranty may cover the repair for some vehicles, others may have to pay around $6000 for the repair, which is more than the value of the car for some owners.

Another issue that affects the 2006 Xterra is the leaky radiator problem, where pink coolant leaks into the transmission fluid, causing the transmission to fail outright. This defect has affected many drivers, who have paid an average of $3,950 for radiator replacement.

The 2006 Xterra has 766 complaints submitted to NHTSA, with various issues related to engine and engine cooling, electrical system, fuel/propulsion system, power train, and engine.

In addition to these mechanical issues, some owners have reported problems with the interior and exterior of the 2006 Xterra. For example, the paint scratches easily, and rust was starting on the rear passenger door for one owner.

Despite these issues, some owners have reported positive experiences with the 2006 Xterra. For example, one owner praised the vehicle's performance, handling, and safety features, noting that it was a joy to own and drive. However, this owner also noted that some upgrades could make the vehicle even better.

In summary, the Nissan Xterra 2006 has several common problems, including transmission failure, leaky radiator, defective timing chain, and various issues related to the engine and electrical system. While some owners have reported positive experiences with the vehicle, others have had significant issues that required costly repairs. It is essential to be aware of these potential problems when considering purchasing a 2006 Xterra.

  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:AUXILLARY TANK
  • Summary: NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006 AND MODEL YEAR 2008 FRONTIER, XTERRA AND PATHFINDER VEHICLES. THE MOLDED FUEL TANK SHELLS CAN DEFORM, CAUSING THE FUEL SENDER FLOAT ARM TO CONTACT AN EMBOSSMENT MOLDED INTO THE TANK SHELL CAUSING THE INSTRUMENT PANEL FUEL GAUGE TO SHOW THAT THE VEHICLE HAS APPROXIMATELY ONE QUARTER TANK WHEN THE FUEL TANK IS EMPTY.
  • Consequence: THIS COULD CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO RUN OUT OF GAS AND STALL IN TRAFFIC, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL LEVEL SENDING UNIT INSIDE THE FUEL TANK WITH A NEW ONE THAT HAS A MODIFIED FLOAT ARM. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR BEFORE MARCH 22, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

IN THOSE AREAS OF THE COUNTRY WHICH USE HEAVY CONCENTRATIONS OF ROAD SALT IN THE WINTER, A MIXTURE OF SNOW/WATER AND SALT CAN ENTER INTO THE FRONT CRASH ZONE SENSOR (CZS) HOUSING. IF THIS OCCURS, THE CZS MAY INTERNALLY RUST RESULTING IN A SIGNAL INTERRUPTION. IF THIS HAPPENS, THE RED AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT WILL ILLUMINATE TO ALERT THE VEHICLE OPERATOR.
  • Consequence: THIS ISSUE COULD RESULT IN THE NON-DEPLOYMENT OF THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER FRONT AIR BAGS IN A CRASH, INCREASING THE RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FRONT CZS WITH A REDESIGNED SENSOR. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JANUARY 26, 2009. • Manufacturer: HOPKINS MANUFACTURING CORP.
  • Components: EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: CERTAIN HOPKINS AFTERMARKET TRAILER BRAKE CONTROL CONNECTION HARNESSES SOLD FOR USE ON CERTAIN MODELS OF NISSAN VEHICLES WHICH ARE LISTED ABOVE. THE INTERNAL PART NUMBERS WITHIN HOPKINS ARE: 1010476025, 1040376025, 1110476025, 1170376025, 1290376025, 1010476035, 1040376035, 1110476035, 1170376035, AND 1290376035. A WIRE MAY HAVE BEEN PLACED IN AN INCORRECT POSITION IN THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR HOUSING. THIS RESULTS IN AN INCORRECT ROUTING OF WIRES BETWEEN THE TRAILER BRAKE CONTROLLER AND THE TOWING VEHICLE WIRING SYSTEM.
  • Consequence: THIS HARNESS WOULD RESULT IN POWER FROM THE TRAILER BRAKE CONTROLLER GOING TO THE TOWING VEHICLE DASH LIGHT CIRCUIT RATHER THAN THE TRAILER BRAKES. THIS RESULT WOULD BE THE LACK OF TRAILER BRAKING WHEN THE TOWING VEHICLE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. IT WOULD ALSO RESULT IN THE TOWING VEHICLES DASH LIGHTS BEING ACTIVATED WHEN THE VEHICLE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. THE FAILURE OF THE APPLICATION OF THE TRAILER BRAKE COULD RESULT IN REDUCED ABILITY TO STOP AND CONTRIBUTE TO A POSSIBLE CRASH.

Negative 2006 Nissan Xterra car reviews

  1. Justyn Feeney 2024-06-01

Hi there! I've been reading a lot of reviews from other people and it seems like the repairs on my XTerra are really starting to add up. I'm wondering if I should bite the bullet and shell out the money. They say I have a cracked radiator, which seems to be a common issue with this model. The power steering fluid leak will cost $1200 to replace the unit, and the dealership says it can leak into other areas of the car. I always thought brake rotors should never wear out, and now I'm having wheel bearing problems too. Several years ago, I paid to have the timing chain corrected. It's frustrating that all these things are happening, but I'm hoping to find a solution soon. Thanks for your help!

Positive 2006 Nissan Xterra car reviews

  1. Layne Prosacco 2024-11-02

I've only had my Xterra for a few days, but I already love it! It's so much fun to drive, and it has great acceleration. The interior is roomy, and there are lots of great places to hook stuff, as well as plenty of storage space. The only downside I've noticed is that it can be a bit difficult for someone to get out of the back seat, as it's a bit narrow. However, I really appreciate the hard plastic on the inside, as it's easy to clean. I'm still getting used to the feel of the steering wheel, but overall, I have no complaints. I would definitely recommend this SUV to anyone! On my first tank of gas, I got 19 mpg in town, which is great. Plus, the stereo system is awesome, and I love the roof rack and first aid kit.

I purchased the Nissan Xterra X because I wanted a reliable vehicle that would last me. I was previously driving a Trailblazer, but I decided to switch to the Xterra to save on my monthly payment. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I love the Xterra even more than the Trailblazer! It's the perfect vehicle for outdoor enthusiasts, whether you enjoy camping, biking, or have furry friends to bring along. It's also easy to maintain and has more power than I expected. The Xterra is incredibly comfortable and I haven't had any issues with it. I highly recommend taking one for a test drive to see if it's the right fit for you. Personally, I absolutely love mine and it's exactly what I was looking for.

I've been driving it for almost a month now and I must say, my love for this beauty grows deeper and deeper every day. The fast acceleration and high seat are just a few of the things that make this car so great. But what really makes me love it even more is the attention I get from other drivers and pedestrians. I can't quite figure out what they're thinking, but the fact that their heads turn in my direction is enough for me.

Nissan did an amazing job with the 2006 redesign, especially with the engine upgrade. The vehicle handles great on the road with a tight suspension, great pickup, and quick starts. It's also quiet on the highway and doesn't sacrifice offroad performance. This vehicle is perfect for around-town driving during the week and offroad trips on weekends. The design and interior are well thought-out, with racks from Yakima to handle whatever gear you may have, such as skis, surfboards, bikes, packs, or even your furry friend. The stereo sounds great, and the cab offers excellent 360 visibility. The vehicle comfortably seats four, except for the climb, and can change from 2 to 4-high to 4-low with a locking rear differential. It makes an excellent utility vehicle.

I have owned my Xterra for 10 years now, and I still love it just as much as when I first bought it! It's great for offroading, has easy steering, and is just plain awesome!
