The Toyota Highlander, also known as the Toyota Kluger (Japanese: トヨタ・クルーガー, Hepburn: Toyota Kurūgā), is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by Toyota since 2000.

Announced in April 2000 at the New York International Auto Show and arriving in late 2000 in Japan and January 2001 in North America, the Highlander became one of the first car-based mid-size SUV or mid-size crossovers. The Highlander is the crossover counterpart to the more rugged, truck-based mid-size 4Runner and became Toyota's best-selling SUV before being surpassed by the smaller RAV4 in 2006.

The first-generation model was sold in Japan as the Kluger, which was exclusive to dealership network called Toyota Netz as a larger alternative to the RAV4. The Kluger nameplate is also used in Australia because "Highlander" is a trademarked trim line name owned by Hyundai. The name is derived from the German word klug, which means smart or clever (Klüger – with diacritics – means "someone who is smarter than another" in German).

I HAVE PERFORMED ALL THE REQUIRED MAINTENANCE ON OUR VEHICLES SINCE THEIR PURCHASE, OIL CHANGES, FLUIDS LEVELS, SERPENTINE AND POWER STEERING BELTS REPLACEMENTS, TIRE ROTATION, AIR AND FUEL FILTERS REPLACEMENT, WIPERS, STRUTS, AND MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS. THE ONLY SERVICE THAT WAS PERFORMED BY TECHNICIANS WAS COOLANT AND TRANSMISSION OIL SERVICE. ON TUESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2012 WHILE MY WAY HOME FROM WORK, I NOTICED THAT MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ACTIVATED. WHEN I GOT HOME, I USE MY OBD CODE READER AND OBTAINED THE FAULT CODE OF P1349. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT MY VEHICLE APPEARED TO BE RUNNING NORMALLY. AFTER READING THE POSSIBLE CAUSES, I TOOK IT TO A LOCAL SERVICE CENTER AND HAD AN OIL CHANGE PERFORMED. I DID THIS BECAUSE I HAD A COUPON FOR AN OIL CHANGE AND FILTER FOR $14.99. I RESET THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND THEN DROVE THE VEHICLE WORK. ON THE WAY HOME, I NOTICED THAT MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND MY LOW OIL PRESSURE LIGHT HAD ACTIVATED. AS I ATTEMPTED TO MAKE IT OFF THE FREEWAY, I NOTICED THAT THE MOTOR START MESSING. BY THE TIME I GOT TO THE OFF RAMP, THE ENGINE WAS EMITTING LOUD BANGING SOUNDS AND WAS STRUGGLING. BY THE TIME IS ABLE TO SAFELY PARK THE VEHICLE, THE MOTOR HAD CEASED. AS AN ORIGINAL OWNER, I DO NOT RECALL EVER RECEIVING A NOTICE REGARDING OIL JELLY. POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-06-16
  • VIN: JTEHF21A510
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: AS MY WIFE WAS SLOWING THE VEHICLE TO A STOP IN A PARKING LOT, THE VEHICLE SEEMED TO EXPERIENCE AN ACCELERATION ON ITS OWN. SHE FELT AS IF THE ACCELERATOR GOT STUCK SO SHE IMMEDIATELY PRESSED BRAKE WITH HER LEFT FOOT AND ACCELERATOR WITH THE RIGHT FOOT IN AN EFFORT TO 'RELEASE' THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THIS WAS A REFLEX MOVE ON HER PART BECAUSE IT HAPPENED SO FAST. THE VEHICLE HOPPED OVER THE PARKING LOT CURB, LANDED ON THE GRASS AND CAME TO A STOP. I WAS STANDING 50 FEET FROM THE CAR WHEN THIS HAPPENED. THE ONLY THING I NOTICED WAS A BRAKING SOUND AND WHEN I TURNED AROUND THE CAR HAD HOPPED AND WAS ON THE GRASS. WE TOOK THE CAR TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP WHO COULDN'T FIND THE CAUSE OR REPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THEY SAID THERE'S NO PROBLEM WITH THE CAR. A MONTH HAS GONE BY SINCE THE INCIDENT AND THERE HASN'T BEEN ANYTHING UNUSUAL WITH THE CAR SINCE. *TR

I'VE NEVER HAD THIS HAPPEN IN ANY OTHER VEHICLE I'VE OWNED OVER THE 50 YEARS I'VE DRIVEN. I HAVE A 1992 CAMRY WITH ALMOST 200,000 MILES ON IT, AND THERE IS NO WEAR AT ALL ON THE SEAT BELT. WE NEED A RECALL! *TR

VISIBILITY,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-05-24
  • VIN: JTEHF21A410
  • Components: VISIBILITY,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: THE DRIVER'S SIDE SUN VISOR SUDDENLY DROPPED DOWN INTO MY FIELD OF VIEW WHEN I HIT A BUMP ON A THREE LANE 40 MPH PAVED ROAD AT RUSH HOUR. I NEARLY REAR-ENDED THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME DURING THE SHORT TIME (MAYBE TWO SECONDS) REQUIRED TO REACT AND RAISE THE VISOR. AN ONLINE SEARCH REVEALED THAT A REPLACEMENT VISOR COSTS A SHOCKING $791.00, AND THAT MANY DOZENS OF OTHERS WERE REPORTING THIS PROBLEM IN 2001 - 2009 TOYOTA HIGHLANDERS. SOLUTIONS RANGED FROM JURY-RIGGING THE VISOR IN THE UP POSITION TO SIMPLY REMOVING THE VISOR AND USING ONE'S HAND TO BLOCK THE SUN WHEN NEEDED. SOME OF THESE "SOLUTIONS" ARE OBVIOUSLY UNSAFE, AND COULD EASILY BE AVOIDED IF TOYOTA CHARGED A MORE REASONABLE PRICE FOR THE REPLACEMENT VISOR. REPLACEMENT CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED BY ALMOST ANYONE WITH A SCREWDRIVER IN ABOUT 12 MINUTES. THANK YOU FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY TO FILE A COMPLAINT. *TR

I TRIED HITTING THE BRAKE AND IT WOULDN'T STOP UNTIL IT HIT THE GARAGE DOOR. I DON'T KNOW HOW FAST IT WAS GOING, BUT IT SEEMED LIKE IT WAS GOING AT AN EXCESSIVE SPEED. *KB

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE STOPPED AT A STOP LIGHT, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN AND CRASHED INTO THE VEHICLE STOPPED IN FRONT OF THE CONTACT. THERE WERE NO DAMAGES TO EITHER VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TEST, BUT THE MANUFACTURER WOULD NOT ALLOW A TECHNICIAN TO INSPECT IT. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY WOULD SEND AN ENGINEER TO EXAMINE THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT YET EXAMINED OR REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 125,000.

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-06-15
  • VIN: JTEGF21A510
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: THIS VISIBILITY ISSUE IS CAUSED BY THE SUNVISOR ON THE DRIVER SIDE, DROPPING DOWN FROM THE STOWED POSITION UNEXPECTEDLY AND REPEATEDLY BLOCKING THE DRIVER'S VISION. DEALER INDICATED NOT A TOYOTA PROBLEM AND PRICING IT AT $700 + DOLLARS TO REPLACE. WHEN DRIVING, THE SUNVISOR HAD TO BE MOVED TO THE SIDE AT ALL TIMES AND BACK TO FORWARD POSITION JUST TO GET IT OUT OF WAY TO EXIT VEHICLE. ENDED UP BUYING FROM THE DEALER A REGULAR VISOR (NOT THE LIMITED MODEL VISOR). THE NEW VISOR COST $80 + DOLLARS. VEHICLE SOLD AS A LIMITED MODEL, SHOULD NOT HAVE ANY HAZARDOUS/DANGEROUS PROBLEMS SUCH AS THIS, NOT ADDRESSED WITHOUT A NATIONAL RECALL. VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH THE TOYOTA CORP. FOR NOT ACCEPTING THESE COMPLAINTS AND DENYING THAT PROBLEM EVEN EXISTS. NHTSA PLEASE TAKE NOTE, AND ADD UP ALL THESE SAME VISIBILITY ISSUES AS SHOWING ON YOUR SITE. NOT JUST THIS MODEL I BET MANY SAME VISOR ISSUES SHOW UP FOR OTHER TOYOTA MODELS. THANK YOU! *TR

2001 Toyota Highlander recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2001 Toyota Highlander.

2004-04-15
  • Manufacturer: TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA, INC.
  • Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:DOORS:LATCH
  • Summary: CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES HAVE A CHILD PROTECTION LOCK (CPL) SYSTEM ON BOTH OF THE REAR SIDE DOORS. WHEN AN OPERATOR OF THE VEHICLE CLOSES THE DOOR VERY HARD WITH THE CPL LEVER SET TO THE LOCK POSITION, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE LEVER MAY CONTACT THE BODY PANEL, CAUSING THE CPL LEVER TO MOVE INTO THE UNLOCK POSITION.
  • Consequence: THIS CONDITION COULD ALLOW THE DOOR TO BE OPENED WITH THE INSIDE WHILE THE OPERATOR BELIEVES THAT THE CPL WAS ACTIVATED. IF THE DOOR WERE OPENED FROM THE INSIDE WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION, AN OCCUPANT COULD FALL OUT AND BE INJURED.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL SHORTEN THE CPL LEVER. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN MAY 7, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.
2002-07-30
  • Manufacturer: TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA, INC.
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:MOUNTING
  • Summary: ON SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THERE IS A BREATHER HOSE THAT ATTACHES TO THE NOZZLE OF THE ON-BOARD REFUELING VAPOR RECOVERY (ORVR) VALVE, WHICH IS LOCATED ON THE TOPSIDE OF THE FUEL TANK. THE BREATHER HOSE IS ATTACHED WITH A CLAMP, WHOSE "TABS" FACE IN THE UPWARD DIRECTION. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS CRASHED UNDER THE NEW CAR ASSESSMENT PROGRAM (NCAP) TEST (I.E., 35 MPH FRONTAL BARRIER CRASH), THE CLAMP "TABS" CONTACTED THE UNDERSIDE OF THE BODY DUE TO MOVEMENT OF THE FUEL TANK, CAUSING THE NOZZLE TO BREAK.
  • Consequence: IN THE WORST CASE, NOZZLE BREAKAGE COULD RESULT IN FUEL LEAKAGE IF THE VEHICLE ROLLS-OVER AFTER A HIGH SPEED FRONTAL CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL ROTATE THE SPECIFIED CLAMP. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN SEPTEMBER 23, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

  • Manufacturer: TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA, INC.
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:MASTER CYLINDER
  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SPORT UTIITY VEHICLES. THE RESERVOIR FILLER CAP OF THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER MAY INDUCE A VACUUM, INTRODUCING SOME AIR INTO THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER RESERVOIR. THIS COULD CAUSE ABNORMAL BRAKE NOISE AND INCREASED PEDAL STROKE WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED.
  • Consequence: THE INCREASED PEDAL STROKE WILL LENGTHEN THE STOPPING DISTANCE OF THE VEHICLE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL BLEED THE AIR FROM THE BRAKE LINES AND REPLACE THE RESERVOIR FILLER CAP. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JULY 30, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

Negative 2001 Toyota Highlander car reviews

  1. Andrew Leannon 2024-10-14

At 75k miles, the car requires a rear seal replacement costing $3,000. Additionally, it consumes oil on the highway and produces an unusual whistling noise when going against the wind on the highway. Despite these issues, the car is still in our possession due to my wife's preference for it. However, it is important to note that the gas mileage is not satisfactory.

  2. Bennie Lueilwitz 2024-03-20

I bought this car used with 94000 miles on it from a single owner who claimed it had no problems. However, since August 2006, I have had to replace four tires, get it aligned, replace the front brakes (as it would not pass inspection), and now need to replace the rear brakes. The check engine light has also come on, and I had to replace the expensive emission sensor. Unfortunately, the check engine light has come on again. Additionally, the cup holder has broken, which is a very inconvenient spot and poorly designed/made. I had to downgrade from a 2004 Tahoe to this car due to other circumstances than gas mileage. I have also had a hard time finding replacement wiper blades for the front and back, and the windshield leaks around the rubber seal. There is also a lack of inside compartments, and the cigarette lighter jumps out of the pocket if you try to use it. Overall, I am not very pleased with this car.

  3. Javon Mohr 2024-03-15

I've been the proud owner of my 01 Highlander for about 2 years now. While it may not be my personal favorite, my wife absolutely adores it! We purchased it used with 45000 miles and have since put 113000 miles on it. We've had to replace the tires, brakes, and oxygen sensor ($200!), but we were able to fix the heater for free after discovering that many others had the same issue with broken solder connections. Unfortunately, we were told by the dealer that the rear axle is leaking fluid and that it would cost $350 to fix the axle seals. Despite this setback, we're still grateful for the time we've had with our Highlander.

  4. Shaun Hamill 2024-01-29

I purchased this vehicle new in 2001. Although I wish I could say how great this SUV is, unfortunately, it hasn't been reliable. However, I do love everything about it except for this issue. Soon after the warranty ran out, the engine began to have problems with the check oil light coming on when I checked the oil (which was changed very regularly, more often than recommended). To my surprise, it was completely dry on the dipstick. I took it to the local Toyota dealer to check for 'sludge', but as far as they could tell, none was noted. I continued to drive and add oil before and after long trips. It's not leaking, just producing lots of white smoke. Unfortunately, last week the check engine light came on, and it's currently in the shop. I'm very disappointed!

Your SUV has a really nice style and rides smoothly. We were amazed by the performance of the four-cylinder engine, especially when driving in the Colorado Rockies. Even when taken out of overdrive, it climbs just as well as any larger engine.

  2. Conner Dietrich 2024-11-23

It's great to hear that you find this SUV fun to drive! It also has impressive towing capabilities while still maintaining a carlike ride. Additionally, its stylish design sets it apart from other SUVs. And the best part? It's not an overgrown gas hog like some of the larger SUVs out there. This SUV is just the right size for your needs.

  3. Blaise Zemlak 2024-11-21

I tried many other SUV's like Pathfinder, Explorer and Passport before buying this great vehicle. This is one of the best products from Toyota. It combines the ruggedness of a 4 Runner with the comfort of a Camry. I really like my HIGHLANDER!

  4. Travis Hintz 2024-11-05

I am thrilled with my new Toyota Highlander! As a previous owner of two Toyotas, I can confidently say that this is my favourite one yet. My passengers constantly compliment how comfortable the vehicle is, and I have had no issues with installing my baby's car seat. Unlike some of my friends who struggle with getting their car seats in correctly and losing front seat space, I have had no such problems with the Highlander. I had a great experience purchasing this car from Jerry's Toyota in Maryland, they were fantastic to do business with!

  5. Darron Gleichner 2024-10-26

I love this car! It rides like an Avalon. There is lots of back seat leg room. I drive in the snow a lot and it handles slick roads very well. I will definitely lease a new one.
