The Chevrolet Van or Chevy Van (also known as the Chevrolet/GMC G-series vans and GMC Vandura) is a range of vans that was manufactured by General Motors from the 1964 to 1996 model years. Introduced as the successor for the rear-engine Corvair Corvan/Greenbrier, the model line also replaced the panel van configuration of the Chevrolet Suburban. The vehicle was sold both in passenger van and cargo van configurations as well as a cutaway van chassis that served as the basis for a variety of custom applications.

Produced across three generations (1964–66, 1967–70, and 1970–96), the model line was sold under a wide variety of model names under both the Chevrolet and GMC brands. The first two generations were forward control vehicles (with the engine placed between the seats); the third generation adopted a configuration placing the engine forward of the driver. The second and third generations shared powertrain commonality with the C/K pickup truck model line.

After the 1996 model year, GM retired the G-Series vans, replacing them with the GMT600-platform Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana.

Common 1996 Chevrolet L van problems

The 1996 Chevrolet Chevy Van, also known as the Express, is a popular choice for those needing a reliable and durable vehicle for transporting people or cargo. However, like any vehicle, it is not without its common problems.

One of the most commonly reported issues with the 1996 Chevy Van is related to its power window motors. The search results indicate that the driver's side window motor has gone out three times, and the passenger side window motor has gone out twice in one particular van. This suggests that the power window motors may be prone to failure in the 1996 Chevy Van.

Another issue that has been reported is related to the fuel system. In the 1999 Express, there have been three complaints about fuel pump failure. This could lead to issues with starting the vehicle or maintaining a consistent speed while driving.

The 1996 Chevy Van's engine also appears to be a source of problems. In one particular van, the check engine light came on, and the following components were replaced: fuel pump, all oxygen sensors, alternator, plugs, wires, distributor, spider injector, crank and cam sensors, and a couple of other sensors. The codes that were present before the crank and cam sensors were replaced were P0175 (mixture rich), P0300 (misfire), and P1345 (cam code). These codes suggest that there may be issues with the fuel-air mixture, misfiring, and the camshaft position sensor.

The 1996 Chevy Van's body also appears to be a source of problems. In the 2003 Express, there have been two complaints about a poor paint job, and in the 2005 Express, there have been two complaints about peeling paint. These issues could lead to cosmetic concerns and potentially more significant problems if the paint is not properly maintained.

The electrical system in the 1996 Chevy Van has also been reported as a source of problems. In certain GM vans, if the temperature is set to maximum heat or the mode knob is set to maximum floor vent, and an electrical short occurs, components inside the modules may overheat and catch fire. This issue could lead to significant safety concerns and potential damage to the vehicle.

In summary, the 1996 Chevy Van has several common problems, including issues with the power window motors, fuel system, engine, body, and electrical system. While these issues can be concerning, many of them can be addressed with proper maintenance and repairs. It is essential to stay up-to-date with recalls and maintenance schedules to ensure the longevity and safety of the vehicle.

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-11-01
  • VIN: 1GNDU06E4TT
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES,EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: I PURCHASED MY VAN USED IN OCT 2003, AND WITHIN 3 WEEKS OF DRIVING IT, THE OUTSIDE PASSENGER AND DRIVER DOORS LATCHES HAVE BROKE FROM THE INSIDE OF THE DOOR FRAME, WHICH HAS LED TO THE DOOR UNABLE TO OPEN FROM THE OUTSIDE ONLY THE INSIDE. SHORTLY AFTER THE DOOR LATCHES STOPPED WORKING, BOTH OF THE WINDOW MOTORS BURNED UP AND AM NO LONGER ABLE TO ROLL THE WINDOWS UP OR DOWN. I HAVE HAD THE DOOR LATCHES PUT BACK IN PLACE TWICE AND WAS TOLD THAT I WOULD PROBABLY HAVE TO REPLACE THEM BECAUSE THEY WON'T STAY ATTACHED. I GOT AN ESTIMATE ON THE WINDOW MOTORS AND THEY WERE VERY EXPENSIVE, AM UNABLE TO REPLACE RIGHT NOW. I FEEL THAT THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS TO NOT BE ABLE TO OPEN YOUR DOOR FROM THE OUTSIDE, ESPECIALLY IF THERE WERE A WRECK, NO ONE COULD GET TO YOU FAST ENOUGH. *JB
