2011 Honda Civic problems

honda logo

The Honda Civic (Japanese: ホンダ・シビック, Hepburn: Honda Shibikku) is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1972. As of 2023, the Civic is positioned between the Honda Fit/City and Honda Accord in Honda's global car line-up.

The first-generation Civic was introduced in July 1972 as a two-door fastback sedan, followed by a three-door hatchback that September. With a 1,169 cc transverse engine and front-wheel drive like the British Mini, the car provided good interior space despite overall small dimensions. Initially gaining a reputation for being fuel-efficient, reliable and environmentally friendly, later iterations have become known for performance and sportiness, especially the Civic Type R, Civic VTi, Civic GTi and Civic SiR/Si.

The Civic has been repeatedly rebadged for international markets, and served as the basis for the Honda CR-X, the Honda CR-X del Sol, the Concerto, the first generation Prelude, the Civic Shuttle (later to become the Orthia) and the CR-V (which, by extension, was used as the basis for the Honda FR-V).

The Civic is one of the all-time best-selling automobiles in the world, with over 27 million units sold since 1972 as of 2021.

Common 2011 Honda Civic problems

The Honda Civic 2011 is known for its long-lasting engine and transmission choices, offering a sporty and engaging driving experience for the price, and excellent fuel efficiency throughout the lineup. However, there are some common problems that owners have reported.

One of the most common problems is related to interior components breaking, which is mentioned by several owners. This can include issues with the sunvisors, air conditioner, and other components. It is essential to check these features during the test drive and ensure they are functioning correctly before purchasing a used 2011 Honda Civic.

Another common problem is premature brake wear. While brake pads are consumable and wear varies depending on individual driving style, some owners have reported excessive brake wear. It is essential to check the condition of the brakes and ensure they are in good working order before purchasing a used 2011 Honda Civic.

Some owners have also reported problems with the clear coat of paint. While this is not a widespread issue based on the low number of complaints, it is still something to look out for when purchasing a used 2011 Honda Civic.

The 2011 Honda Civic has had 9 recalls, more than average for a car this old. Eight of these recalls are for airbag inflators, which are a common recall on most vehicles, and one is for a leak in the fuel pump module. It is essential to address these recalls for safety reasons, as bad airbags can hurt occupants in the event of a crash, and fuel pump problems can increase the risk of a fire.

In summary, while the Honda Civic 2011 is known for its long-lasting engine and transmission choices, and excellent fuel efficiency, there are some common problems that owners have reported. These include issues with interior components breaking, premature brake wear, problems with the clear coat of paint, and recalls related to airbag inflators and fuel pump modules. It is essential to check these features during the test drive and ensure they are functioning correctly before purchasing a used 2011 Honda Civic.

Negative 2011 Honda Civic car reviews

  1. Gaston Marquardt 2024-08-20

I want to start by expressing my love for Honda, or rather, my past love for Honda. My first car was a '93 Del Sol, and it was an absolute blast to drive. I loved taking the targa top off and blasting the radio while listening to the cold air intake give my 4 banger some grumble. I developed a deep affection for that car as I drove it to 210,000 miles, and it made me a believer in Honda. However, my experience with my current Civic has unfortunately made me lose faith in the brand. The paint on the car is of poor quality and chips off easily, even with the slightest impact. I have read reviews on 03 to 07 Honda vehicles, and it seems that Honda still hasn't figured out how to fix their paint problem. Additionally, I have experienced issues with the heat shield near the manifold vibrating, which is unusual for a 3-year-old vehicle. Lastly, an animal chewed the wires on my O2 sensor, causing my check engine light to come on. Although I acknowledge that this is not Honda's fault, I was disappointed to find out that there is no fuse for the O2 sensor, which made it difficult to fix the issue. Despite these issues, I still have fond memories of my Del Sol and hope that Honda can improve the quality of their vehicles in the future. When I tried to start my vehicle, I realized that the wires had been chewed and it had shorted the circuit, frying the ECM. What should have been a simple O2 repair and fuse switch out turned into a more expensive $150 used ECM install and a $100 reprogramming fee by the dealership. However, I am happy that my car is working again. Unfortunately, four months later, I heard a clanking noise coming from the serpentine belt. I assumed it was the drive belt auto tensioner and purchased a new drive belt and tensioner. It was a challenging task, but I managed to replace it all. However, the clanking noise persisted. I am now planning to check the A/C compressor, which I believe is the problem. It is frustrating that a vehicle with only 59,000 miles on it requires a new A/C compressor. For those who don't know, an aftermarket auto tensioner and belt can be purchased for about $75, and an A/C compressor for about $300. If taken to a mechanic, the repair bill could be upwards of $800, and at a dealership, it could be over $1000. Although I bought this Honda with the expectation of being repair-free until at least 120,000 miles, I feel like this car is falling apart at only 60,000 miles. While it has no impressive interior features, it is very basic. The steel wheels are too wide for the car's weight, which improves cornering in the summer but causes it to slip all over the snow, even with studded snow tires. Overall, I regret purchasing this car, as it has given me the same reliability as an ex-girlfriend's Suzuki, which I was always working on. However, it has finally made me consider trying Toyota next time.

Good car, overall, if you just want to get from point A to B. This car is reliable and practical, but it may not be the most exciting option out there. The steering could benefit from more feedback, and visibility around corners could be improved, especially in bad weather. However, the moonroof is a nice touch, the controls are easy to use, and it is comfortable to sit in on long trips.

Hey there! Sorry to hear about the trouble you had with your new car. It looks like you needed a replacement for the front wheel bearing and a realignment, and that's not great news with only 15K miles on the clock. It's interesting to note that CR didn't recommend the Civic for this model year. Hope everything is sorted now!

Last October, I purchased a 2011 Honda Civic Hybrid that was certified-used with 38,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I have not been enjoying my experience with this car. I was looking for a hybrid and ended up at a dealership where I encountered an unscrupulous salesman who pressured me into taking the car home that same night. While I take responsibility for my decision, I have been reminded of my mistake every day since I signed on the dotted line. The interior of the car is unrefined and uninspired, and I have experienced some performance issues that I did not expect. Additionally, I have had some problems with the car over the past few months. Within the first two months of ownership, my IMA light came on. Despite these issues, I am hopeful that I can find a solution and improve my experience with this car.

I purchased a new Civic about a year ago, but unfortunately, I have had to take it to the shop four times already. The issues I have experienced include a stuck window, a door that wouldn't close, a grinding engine noise, and most recently, peeling door covers. I have found the dealer to be somewhat difficult in addressing these issues. Additionally, I have noticed that the quality of the paint and materials is not up to par. Even a small leaf falling on the car can cause scratches. Furthermore, the placement of the speedometer makes it difficult to see and the light coloring is prone to staining. I am considering trading in my car for a different make, as I feel that the quality of Civics has declined. Thank you for your understanding.

Positive 2011 Honda Civic car reviews

  1. Shane Steuber 2024-09-03

I've been the proud owner of this car since April 2011, and it has clocked only 4,600 miles as of Feb. 2012. It's a great car and a lot of fun to drive! However, I do have a couple of complaints. Firstly, the shift knob and seats could be more comfortable. The aluminum top of the shift knob gets scorching hot in the summer heat, making it uncomfortable to use. To fix this, I ordered a leather knob yesterday in preparation for the upcoming summer. While the OEM knob looks nice, it's not practical. Secondly, the sport seats are initially a bit tight, but I'm breaking them in now. Lastly, there is a bit too much road noise. The engine noise is nice, but the tire noise is excessive.

Hello! I wanted to share my experience with my 2011 Honda Civic LX. While it's a reliable and small car, I was a bit disappointed with the mileage as I never got more than 28 m.p.g. despite Honda claiming much higher. Unfortunately, I had some trouble with the T.P.MS. and brake light, and the customer service at both Jones Honda in Lancaster, Pa. and Robert's Honda in Downingtown, Pa. wasn't the best. However, my personal mechanic was able to fix the issue in about 20 minutes! While I won't be purchasing from a Honda dealer again, I'm glad I was able to find a solution. Thank you for listening to my experience!

  3. King Kovacek 2024-08-12

It sounds like you found a reliable ride with good gas mileage, even if it's not the most powerful. Plus, the 'OEM' sound is really impressive!

  4. Trace Halvorson 2024-08-04

You've been good to me for the past two years!

  5. Nelson Cole 2024-08-03

I love my little Honda! It's so much fun to drive and gets incredible gas mileage. The only downside is that the back passenger window is a bit difficult to see out of, which creates a bit of a blind spot. But overall, it's a great car for a young person. Although, I can tell that I'll need more space soon. But when it comes to reliability and gas mileage, the Civic is hard to beat!
