1997 Buick Riviera problems

buick logo

The Buick Riviera is a personal luxury car that was marketed by Buick from 1963 to 1999, with the exception of the 1994 model year.

As General Motors' first entry into the personal luxury car market segment, the Riviera was highly praised by automotive journalists upon its high-profile debut. It was a ground-up design on a new GM E platform debuting for the 1963 model year and was also Buick's first unique Riviera model.

Unlike its subsequent GM E platform stablemates, the Oldsmobile Toronado and Cadillac Eldorado, the Riviera was initially a front engine/rear-wheel drive platform, switching to front-wheel drive starting with the 1979 model year.

While the early models stayed close to their original form, eight subsequent generations varied substantially in size and styling. A total of 1,127,261 Rivieras were produced.

The Riviera name was resurrected for two concept cars that were displayed at auto shows in 2007 and in 2013.

Common 1997 Buick Riviera problems

The Buick Riviera, a luxury car produced between 1995 and 1999, has been praised by some owners for its comfort, sound system, and acceleration. However, there are several common problems that have been reported by owners, particularly with the 1998 model year.

One of the most reported problems with the 1998 Buick Riviera is front cradle rust through. This issue can be costly to fix, with an average cost of $1,000 and an average mileage of 107,000 miles. The front cradle is a critical component of the car's suspension system, and rust can significantly weaken its structural integrity, leading to safety concerns.

Another common problem with the Buick Riviera is electrical issues. While the specific nature of these issues is not specified, electrical problems can be challenging to diagnose and repair, often requiring specialized tools and expertise. Electrical problems can also affect various systems in the car, including the engine, transmission, and safety features.

Sunroof leaks are another problem reported by some Buick Riviera owners. This issue can lead to water damage in the car's interior, causing mold and mildew growth, which can be costly to repair. Sunroof leaks can also affect the car's electrical system, leading to more significant problems.

Supercharger issues are also a concern for some Buick Riviera owners. The supercharger is a critical component of the car's engine, providing additional power and performance. However, supercharger issues can lead to reduced performance, increased fuel consumption, and even engine damage.

Some Buick Riviera owners have reported issues with the serpentine belt, outer door handles, and anti-theft system. These issues can be inconvenient and expensive to repair, affecting the car's performance and safety.

Despite these common problems, some Buick Riviera owners have reported excellent reliability and performance, particularly with the 1997 model year. These owners have praised the car's comfort, sound system, and acceleration, as well as its high-quality materials and excellent handling.

In summary, the Buick Riviera has several common problems, particularly with the 1998 model year. These include front cradle rust through, electrical issues, sunroof leaks, supercharger problems, and issues with the serpentine belt, outer door handles, and anti-theft system. However, some Buick Riviera owners have reported excellent reliability and performance, particularly with the 1997 model year. Prospective buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider having the car inspected by a mechanic before purchasing.

  • Summary: I HAVE A 1997 BUICK RIVIERA THAT HAS A SECURITY LIGHT PROBLEM. I TRY TO CRANK THE CAR AND SOMETIMES IT WILL CRANK OTHER TIMES IT WONT. I AM A YOUNG MALE THAT NORMALLY TRAVELS BACK AND FORTH TO WORK BUT SOME MORNING'S ALL I CAN DO IS PRAY. IT NEVER REALLY BOTHERED ME BEFORE I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT I HAVE THE PATIENCE OF A SLUG. BUT TODAY I WAS PULLED OVER BECAUSE THE BRAKE LIGHT IN MY WINDOW WAS OUT LONG STORY SHORT. I ASKED THE OFFICER IF I COULD LEAVE THE CAR RUNNING BECAUSE OF THE SECURITY PROBLEM WHILE HE CHECKED MY PAPER WORK INSURANCE REGISTRATION ETC. HE STATED FOR BOTH OF OUR MIND STATES IT WOULD BEST IF I TURNED OFF THE MOTOR. I DID AS I WAS ASKED THE OFFICER RETURNED TO THE CAR TO DELIVER MY DRIVERS LICENSE INSURANCE ETC. HE GAVE ME A WARNING TO GET THE LIGHT REPLACED THEN LEFT MEAN WHILE FOR THE NEXT HOUR AND A HALF. HE RETURNED AROUND 45 MINUTES LATER. I AM ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY I TRIED CLEANING THE KEY WITH A DRY RAG LETTING THE KEY SET IN THE IGNITION UNTIL THE LIGHT TURNED OFF. I EVEN UNPLUGGED THE NEGATIVE SIDE OF THE BATTERY CABLE TO LET THE COMPUTER RESET ITS SELF. I WENT TO GM AND HAD A KEY MADE FOR THE CAR BECAUSE MY FIRST KEY HAD THE RUBBER TIP REMOVED. SO I FIGURED I WOULD GET A NEW KEY MADE FOR THE CAR AS WELL AS A NEW KEY PAD EVERYTHING WORKED FINE FOR A DAY OR TWO. I CALLED GM THE MANAGER ASKED ME TO COME BACK IN AND STATED THAT MAYBE THE KEY WAS UNDER CUT BECAUSE THEY HAD JUST PURCHASED A NEW KEY CUTTING MACHINE AND WERE STILL WORKING OUT THE BUGS. THE CAR STARTED FINE SECURITY LIGHT CAME ON WHILE I WAS DRIVING AND I JUST DID NOT LET IT BOTHER ME FOR A WHILE. NOW IM INFORMING YOU GUYS BECAUSE MY OTHER CAR WAS TOTALED BY A HIT AND RUN DRIVER WHILE IT WAS ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD ABOUT TWO WEEKS AGO I LEFT IT TO PUT AIR IN THE SPARE TIRE. I HOPE THAT WE CAN COME TO A SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM BEFORE ITS TO LATE FOR ME OR ANYONE ELSE. *TR

I AM WANTING TO KNOW IF THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ANYBODY ELSE OR IS IT AN ISOLATED THING ?. ALSO, HAVE THERE BEEN ANY COMPLAINTS CONCERNING THE MOTOR MOUNT BOLTS BREAKING (THE HEADS SHEARING OFF) ?. IF NOT FOR THE ABOVE LISTED ITEMS THIS HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MOST WONDERFUL VEHICLES I'VE EVER OWNED. THANK YOU FOR ANY INFORMATION THAT YOU CAN GIVE ME. KELLY GARDNER *TR

THIS CAN HAPPEN ANYWHERE AT ANYTIME AND LEAVE YOU STRANDED AND IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THIS ENGINE TYPE. GM ISSUED A SERVICE BULLETIN ON THIS PROBLEM IN JULY OF 2001 (TSB 01-06-01-007A) AND THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE PEOPLE THAT I HAVE TALKED TO HAVE INDICATED THAT THIS IS A KNOWN AND ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THIS TYPE OF ENGINE. I HAVE CONTACTED THE CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE FOLKS AT GM AND I AM HAVING NO SATISFACTION WITH THEM WHATSOEVER. THEY CLAIM THAT THE AGE OF THE VEHICLE AND THE FACT THAT THERE IS NO SERVICE RECORD ON FILE WITH A DEALER PLAY A BIG PART IN HOW THEY LOOK AT EACH INDIVIDUAL CASE. I HAVE DONE SOME RESEARCH ON THIS PROBLEM AND HAVE DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS A LARGER PROBLEM THAN GM WOULD WANT TO ADMIT TO, SEE WEBSITE WWW.GM-V6LEMONS.COM. I FEEL THAT A RECALL SHOULD HAVE BEEN ISSUED ON THIS PROBLEM AND IF ENOUGH PEOPLE TAKE THEIR COMPLAINTS TO TH NHTSA THEN MAYBE SOMETHING CAN BE DONE. *LA

Negative 1997 Buick Riviera car reviews

  1. Cooper Denesik 2024-05-18

I purchased a 96 Rivi from a dealership three months ago, with the help of my then-roommate who claimed to be a mechanic. Unfortunately, I have experienced several issues with the car, including broken motor mounts, a failed transmission, and frequent overheating. Despite these setbacks, I remain committed to this car. I adore the supercharged engine and the satisfying growl it makes when I hit the gas pedal. Additionally, I have yet to encounter another Rivi on the road, even though I drive it daily.

  2. Jaren Bechtelar 2024-05-11

I bought this car with 147,000 miles on it for $3,500 and initially thought it was amazing. The leather interior was a highlight, especially the heated driver's seat. At first, it was a smooth ride, but unfortunately, things started to go downhill once it hit 165,000 miles. The transmission blew, which was an unexpected expense of $2,500. Additionally, the driver's side door handle broke three times, and the factory replacement costs around $250. I also experienced issues with the crankshaft sensor and suspension at around 190k miles. Despite all of these issues, I managed to get it up to 220k miles. While I will miss the ride and comfort, I won't miss the headaches.

  3. Cameron Kub 2024-02-02

The vehicle was purchased as a dealer certified car, however, the transmission failed after only 5 months and 79,000 miles. Additionally, at 86,000 miles, there were leaks in the intake, power steering, oil pan, and transmission pan. The cost of repairs exceeds the trade-in value of the car. It is worth noting that the car was serviced every 3000 miles.

  1. Beau Cassin 2025-01-01

Your car sounds amazing! It seems like you really enjoy driving it and showing it off. I can tell that you have a great taste in cars and Buicks are definitely a great choice. If anyone is considering buying one, they should definitely go for it and maybe even get two!

  2. Justice Jaskolski 2024-11-22

I have over 150000 miles on this car, and it still runs beautifully. I'm a traveling salesman, and the company wants to get me a new car, but I don't want one. I love this one too much. From the heated leather to the supercharged V6, this car has it all. My sunroof is always open, and the stereo system in this car is great. When I'm home, my 17-year-old boy loves to drive it. I'm going to keep this car until it costs me too much to get a new one!

  3. Nick Thiel 2024-11-20

My Riv is like the most perfect mate who you just know is going to break your heart someday. Our rocky romance was immediate, but thank God for GM-Certified warranties! Fast forward 12 years and I'm still as much in love with her as back then. Even more so because for the past 10 years all she has required of me is feeding and the usual changing. I've grown to listen and know her like none beforehand. She might not be the most nimble and quickest of athletes on the asphalt, but she pampers me with an uncompromised ride, comfort, economy, and timeless styling. With 220K+, our days together are numbered and there goes my heart.

  4. Nickolas Hoeger 2024-11-14

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it with 63000 miles on it and since then, I've put on another 75000 miles and it's still going strong! I'm amazed at how well this car has held up and I think it should be a model for all US brands. It's been the lowest maintenance car I've ever owned and it still looks and feels new even after 138000 miles. I recently gave it to my parents to use in Florida during the winter and I'm planning on giving it to my son in 4 years when he gets his license. Thanks for listening!

  5. Davion Towne 2024-10-19

I love this car! Its performance is great, and it's so comfortable. I haven't had any problems with it yet. Everywhere I go, people compliment me on its design, and some even mistake it for a brand new car.
