RECALLS REPLACED THE STEERING WHEEL & CENTER CONSOLE, AND OTHER RECALLS HAVE BEEN MADE. AT 50,000 MILES THE ALTERNATOR WAS REPLACED AGAIN. SHORTLY AFTER THE WARRANTY RAN, MAJOR ENGINE PROBLEMS CAUSED A $2,500 COMPLETE ENGINE REPLACEMENT. UNDER 90,000 MILES, THE GAS GAUGE STOPPED WORKING AND THE BRAKE LIGHTS NEEDED REWIRING. NOW, UNDER 92,000 MILES A NEW PROBLEM WITH THE ELECTRICAL: THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS COME ON INTERMITTENTLY, THE TRUNK POPS OPEN ON ITS OWN, THE AIRBAG COMES ON AND OFF, THE CAR ONLY STARTS RANDOMLY, AND WORST OF ALL IT SHUTS OFF ALL ON ITS OWN WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE STREET, SO YET AGAIN WE ARE FORCED TO HAVE DIAGNOSTICS RUN TO FIGURE OUT WHAT NEW AND COSTLY REPAIRS WILL NEED TO BE MADE. WITHIN 5 MIN THE CAR OVERHEATED AGAIN AND THIS TIME IT DIED BEFORE I COULD TURN IT OFF. I HAVE BEEN TOLD IT WOULD BE BEST TO REPLACE THE ENGINE AT 4100.00 FOR THAT. I SEARCHED THE INTERNET AND FOUND OUT THERE ARE MANY OTHER VAN OWNERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. THEY USED A RUBBER SEAL WITHOUT STEEL SO THAT IT COOLANT LEAKS INTO THE ENGINE AND MIXES WITH THE OIL, AND DRIES OUT THE CAMSHAFT AND THEN IT BREAKS. IN CANADA THERE IS ALREADY A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT FOR THIS REASON. THEY (MANUFACTURE) KNOW THERE IS A PROBLEM BUT WONT SAY THAT IT IS THERE FAULT. Since 9/11, my family and I have been quite apprehensive about flying, so we have been driving everywhere. Two years ago, we drove from NY to FL and during the 24-hour drive, we were all very comfortable and delighted with the performance of the Montana. Since then, we have driven to FL, MI, and MA a few times, and I must say that the van is more comfortable to drive than my family sedan. I am extremely happy with the product and intend to buy another.

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your Montana so much that you're considering a 2003 model. Out of all the cars you've driven, it's great to hear that this one is your favorite due to its comfortable ride and impressive gas mileage. It's also reassuring to know that you haven't had any major repairs in over 4 years. The overhead console, power seat, steering wheel controls, front and rear air, and other features have all been excellent options. It's a shame that the vehicle doesn't seem to retain much trade-in value, but overall it sounds like a great car to own and drive.

Our Montana has been through some challenges, but we have taken care of them with confidence. At 32,000 miles, we had the engine replaced and addressed brake problems by replacing the front and rear cylinders. We also replaced the tires at 48,000 miles. Currently, we need to fix the master cylinder and the broken passenger seat gear, which will cost $420. Although the rear brake light is cracked and leaking water into the trunk, we remain confident in our ability to address this issue. Despite these challenges, we maintain our confidence in the value of our $30,000 vehicle.

Our 99 Montana is great to drive. It has more than enough power, a perfect ride, and the interior could not be set up better. Additionally, it has been 100 percent reliable. As someone who repairs cars for a living, I can attest that you very seldom see one of these or the other GM versions for anything other than maintenance. So, if you're looking for a vehicle that won't require frequent repairs, this is the one for you. If you're interested in a Chrysler van, be prepared to pay for car repairs.

We really enjoyed this car when we bought it new. It was actually our second choice since the Honda van was not available at a reasonable price. The initial ride, power, and economy were exactly as promised. The dealership offered the car at a reasonable price and it was fully optioned. However, with 130,000 miles, it is starting to show its age and is not aging gracefully. Despite careful maintenance, there have been too many nickel and dime problems. Some of the warranty repairs include the trip computer, radio, seatbelts, power door, and power window. As for non-warranty repairs, we had to fix the intake gasket at 70k, but we were able to avoid the $900 repair by using a $2 can of stop leak, which is still holding up at 130k. We also had to fix the c/v joint, a/c compressor, air shocks, brake calipers, and rotors.

This minivan has an attractive appearance, but unfortunately, my experience with it has been less than satisfactory. I had to replace the transmission at 90k kms, and the second one failed just 100k kms later. Additionally, the wipers tend to run into each other, the intake manifold leaked, the seat fabric is subpar and is starting to deteriorate, the back door latch and key lock no longer work, and the body has already shown signs of rust. The front bumper lost all its paint within the first 3 months of ownership, and the airbag light comes on intermittently. Overall, this has been a costly disappointment.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 1999 Montana. While I've had to repair/replace a few things like the entertainment system, power door, and transmission, I've only put less than 45000 miles on it. I was hoping to keep it for 10 years or more, but unfortunately, I don't think GM builds anything of that quality anymore. I had a similar experience with my previous vehicle, a new 94 GMC Jimmy, which had an engine that seized at 60k under warranty. The dealer couldn't fix the engine properly, and I had to get rid of it. However, I've found that Honda builds great minivans, and I'm considering buying one. Thanks for listening!

We purchased this van brand new and had it regularly maintained by the dealer since then. The first two years were fine, but we started experiencing some issues afterwards, such as electrical problems, cooling system issues, and intake gasket problems. We really enjoy the van when it's working properly, but we became increasingly worried about what might break next. It seems like this is a fairly common issue - you can check out some of the other boards to see for yourself. We ended up taking a hit on our trade-in, but we decided to purchase a non-GM minivan instead. It's unfortunate that we had to part ways with GM, as our previous Pontiac wasn't much better. I suppose we've learned our lesson. While we cannot recommend this van unless you want to just sit in it without driving anywhere, we hope that GM can improve their quality control in the future.

Although the car is nice to drive, it has proven to be unreliable mechanically. The transmission failed at 103,000 km without warning, and despite being rebuilt, it has required two more rebuilds. Additionally, there have been issues with the rear wiper, power window, and gas tank level. These problems have left me stranded several times and have been frustrating to deal with. Despite spending $700 on the power window, it still sticks and requires manual realignment. The gas tank level issue has also not been resolved, causing me to run out of gas twice. Overall, the car's mechanical issues have been a significant inconvenience.
